The iPad mini starts at $329. But with a higher-than-expected price for the device, the technology giant may run into difficulty stealing customers away from Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle Fire HD or Google Inc.’s Nexus 7. Many analysts and consumers had hoped to see a starting price of $250. Apple Inc.’s new iPad is small in size but not low in price and that’s got consumers grumbling and Wall Street worried. Investors appeared to be disappointed, sending Apple’s shares down $20.67, or 3.3%, to $613.36 on Tuesday after the company announced the new tablet at an invitation-only media event held at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose. Apple’s stock has now fallen 12.4% since it released the iPhone 5 on Sept. 21. Investors were underwhelmed, with most of the new products previously reported or rumored. Following the news Tuesday Apple’s shares dipped, closing at $613.36, down 3.3%, amid a broad market decline. Some analysts said investors may have jitters about the new tablet’s price. Others chalked up the dip to new iPad sales figures that were below some analysts’ expectations. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said at the event that Apple had sold 100 million iPads as of two weeks ago. The company will report its latest quarterly results on Thursday. The company’s fourth-generation iPad, which has the same $499 starting price as the third-generation model, has a faster processor and has broader support for wireless carriers’ fastest, LTE wireless networks. It is available Nov. 2. Analysts said the quick update underscored Apple’s need to upgrade the device’s LTE-support for more carriers and its ability to take advantage of new components across products. Apple also announced a restyled iMac computer, MacBook Pro laptop and Mac Mini desktop. Amazon is sells a Kindle Fire HD with 16 gigabytes of storage and 7-inch screen for $199 and a similarly sized Nexus 7 goes for $249. That means an iPad Mini will cost $80 to $130 more, a price that Apple believes is justified because it boasts more features, such as front and back cameras. The Minis reliance on aluminum instead of plastic for its exterior also makes it look more stylish and more enjoyable to hold. If the speculation on technology blogs pans out, Google might make things even more interesting and dizzying for holiday shoppers by introducing a $99 version of the Nexus 7 in the coming weeks.
