Review

Several developers have come up with voice dialing applications for the iPhone, and Say Who is one of the more impressive applications of the bunch. It is simple and accurate, and absolutely free!

The application interface is very simple – it isn’t graphically breathtaking, and it does not include flashy controls. The application does not need fancy graphics – it works and what functionality it has, and it does fairly well.

The application offers only two controls, together with a button which displays the help screen. One control is used to toggle the auto dial feature. This option lets the application dial a number with a delay of five seconds. If this option is disabled, the application provides the users with several other options. Pressing 1 proceeds with dialing. In all other instances, the application’s interface sports only one large button that users need to hold down as he speaks the name of the contact he wishes to call.

The application now has vibration and audio cues to let users know that the application is ‘listening’ to the user. The button, which is initially blue, turns red if the device is ‘listening’.

The voice recognition for the application is almost flawless. It even recognizes prefixes. If a contact has several contact numbers, users can specify either ‘mobile’ ‘home’ or ‘office’ by saying the word out loud after saying the contact’s name.

The application also reads from the nickname field of the address book. Numbers not stored in the address book may also be called using Say Who – the user simply needs to say the number out loud.

This feature, however, is not as accurate as saying the contact’s name.A free application, Say Who does fairly well for its intended purpose.

Pricing

The application is freely downloadable at the App Store.

Conclusion

The application’s integration with the iPhone is far above average, as is its reusability. The user interface, however, is just average. Overall, the Say Who application gets a rating of 3.5 out of 5.
