Stock Futures Lower on Economic Growth Fears. Stocks to Watch: AAPL, BAC, BCS, COH, F, PCS, PFE, SIRI, TM, WFM

New York, August 2nd (TradersHuddle.com) – Stock futures were pointing to a lower open amid weak performance overseas on concerns over the pace of growth in the global economy following weak manufacturing data in the U.S. and speculation China will hike interest rates once more during the year to curb inflation pressures. The U.S. House of Representative voted to pass the debt ceiling increase bill, with it now heading to an easier vote in the Senate.

In Asia, stocks closed lower amid the sluggish data in the U.S. and on increased concern China will raise its interest rates again around the time of the next CPI announcement. The Nikkei fell over 1% with exporters leading the decline, as a stronger yen coupled with concerns over the pace of economic growth in the U.S., pressured the space. Toyota Motors (NYSE:TM), Japan’s largest exporter and the world’s largest automaker, posted better than expected results, while increasing its production forecast by 360,000 cars as its production recovery continues ahead of estimates.

In Europe, equity markets were extending losses on concern over the pace of growth in the global economy and continuing concern over the debt crisis in the euro zone periphery. Miners were weaker, as participants were trimming positions on concern over future demand amid signs of slower global economic growth and banks reversed earlier gains amid sovereign debt woes. Barclays (NYSE:BCS) said that its profit fell 33% year over year and that it will slash 3,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs amid a drop in investment banking and bond trading business.

The Dollar was climbing and continuing to make lost ground against the euro, while crude oil was falling 0.86% to $94.07 per barrel. Gold was climbing 0.43% to $1,628.6 an ounce, near an all-time high, while silver was gaining 0.77% to $39.61 an ounce on flight to safe haven amid economic uncertainty.

Automakers will be in focus, as they will report U.S. July car sales.

On economic news, at 8:30 am, the June Personal Income and Spending data will be out. Economists expect for both to increase by 0.1%. At the same time the June PCE prices will also be release, with economists expecting an increase of 0.2%.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the maker of iPads and iPhones, was falling 0.26% to $395.71 on weaker sentiment amid economic concern. in the prior session Apple posted gains amid market weakness after Canaccord Genuity bumped its target price on AAPL to $515 from $510 due to record iPhone sales during the quarter and as the firm anticipates, according to its channel checks, strong global demand for the iPhone and iPad. And as Ticonderoga noted that noted that its checks indicate strong demand for the new MacBook Air thus far in the U.S., which bode well for the second half of the year during the back to school and holiday seasons. Numerous brokerage houses have lifted their target prices above $500, as the launch of the iPhone 5 around September will be an important catalyst for Apple’s outperformance, as the company took the top spot in smartphone sales during the second quarter, surpassing Samsung, Nokia (NYSE:NOK), and Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM).

Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), the largest U.S. lender, was falling 0.2% to $9.79 in pre-market, as the embattled financial sector will likely outperform amid all the weakness following the debt ceiling bill passage by the House of Representative, which eliminates a big overhang on the sector, which fell on concern of a possible U.S. default sparking a full-blown financial crisis. The stock will also received some support from Barclays performance after posting a smaller than expected drop in profit and announcing as well job cuts amid a slowdown in investment banking business. Bank of America has the biggest exposure to the U.S. consumer and its highly sensitive to economic data, with personal spending and income data due out later this morning.

Ford (NYSE:F), the Dearborn, MI based automaker, will be in focus again during this session as the automaker will release its July sales figures. Yesterday, Ford gained more than 1% on the back of a bullish article on Barron’s over the weekend, in which it stated that Ford can gain as much as 25% if its credit rating improves and the automaker expands its sales in China and India. Last month, Ford posted better than expected results, with the company maintaining its U.S. full year industry volume outlook in the range of 13-13.5 million units, as it continues to expect second half results will be lower than first half. Ford has calculated support at $12 and resistance at $13.44.

The company posted a profit of $0.23 per share, $0.05 worse than consensus, on revenues that climbed 19.3% year over year to $1.21 billion. Last month, MetroPCS was initiated with a Buy and a target price of $24 at Kaufman Brothers, with the firm noting a weak domestic economy benefits value providers as the prepaid wireless segment continues to outpace and gain share from the post-paid wireless providers.

Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, was falling 1.53% to $18.72 in pre-market, after the company posted an upside earnings surprise on revenues that were inline with consensus. Pfizer also reaffirmed its guidance for 2011 and 2012. The pharma giant said it earned of $0.60 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.01 better than consensus, on revenues that fell 0.9% year over year to $16.98 billion. Last week the stock broke below its calculated support at $19.50, leaving the stock open for further weakness.

The company said it earned $0.03 per share, $0.02 better than consensus, on revenues that climbed 6.44% year over year to $744 million. The company said that driven by auto sales growth and higher OEM penetration subscribers jumped 8% year over year, while the average self-pay monthly churn was stable in the second quarter at 1.9%. During the session automakers will report July sales, which will likely impact trading in the stock. Sirius XM joined the NASDAQ-100 index on July 15th. The stock has calculated support at $1.99 and resistance at $2.35.

Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ:WFM), the owner and operator of organic and natural food supermarkets, will be in focus after Williams Capital Research bumped its target price to $80 from $69.30. The firm believes believe the company is well poised to continue to gain market share from traditional grocers, with its competitive position well established with an affluent customer base. it also believes that operational performance going forward will exceed historical levels. The stock posted an all-time high of $68 last week following an earnings beat.

AViiQ Portable Charging Station Review: Convenient but Pricey

Take a look inside your travel bag. If it’s anything like mine, it’s jam-packed with AC adapters and charging cables for your phone, tablet, e-reader, headset, mobile hotspot, and other gear. What a colossal hassle.

The AViiQ Portable Charging Station packs a single AC adapter and three-port USB hub in a slim, zippered case, complete with storage pockets for your cords and other travel items. It’s a nice, decidedly convenient alternative to a bag full of cables and wall warts. my only complaint? The price.

Made of somewhat unattractive gray nylon, the bi-fold AViiQ case measures about 10 inches long, five inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick when zippered. thus, it slips pretty easily into any carry-on bag — though it does seem sort of big overall. (I don’t see how it could be much smaller; I just wish it was.)

Open it up and you’ll find a 15-watt wall charger with folding prongs and a wraparound cord for easy re-storage. The USB hub can supply enough juice to charge most mobile devices, including tablets like the iPad. just plug your existing USB charging cable into the hub, then tuck the remaining cord into one of the pockets below. Everything stays fairly neat and orderly.

The hub also sports a pass-through connector and retractable USB cable, which you can use for, say, syncing your phone with your laptop. That’s a handy little perk.

Also handy: the mesh pocket on the right side of the case, which is good for flattish things like memory cards and spare batteries.

I just got back from a lengthy trip, and the AViiQ was definitely nice to have along. at one point I had three devices — iPhone, Nook Color, and Verizon MiFi 4510L mobile hotspot — connected and charging at the same time. And it was a cinch to sync the iPhone with my laptop when the need arose.

But $79.99 for what amounts to a powered USB hub and carrying case? in my book, that’s too steep. much as I prize convenience when I travel, I prize value even more. That’s the only area where the AViiQ Portable Charging Station comes up short.

Pros: Charges up to three mobile devices simultaneously, including a tablet. keeps cables neat and orderly. Hub includes data pass-through port.

Cons: Not too pretty to look at, especially the pink accents. Expensive.

Should you buy it? If you travel a lot and don’t mind paying a premium for convenience, this is a very handy accessory.

Price: $79.99

Applicant friendly M.D.Stat+ app by University of Michigan – Mobiletor.com

M.D.Stat+, an Android and iPhone compatible application is released by the University of Michigan Medical School. The app is designed to conveniently connect prospective medical students of the university to the admission process.

Once downloaded, the users can log in and gain access to various status updates like receipt of application, interview call, or confirmation of admission. for the iPhone application, status updates are denoted by addition of a badge to the app icon. The same is done for the Android application by the means of a status bar notification. The app also provides link to U-M’s social media channels.

“M.D.Stat+ provides a quick and convenient way for our applicants to stay current on not only their status with us — which we know they may be very anxious about — but also on our overall admissions process. It’s simply a mobile-friendly way for them to view a subset of information that’s been available for many years through our secondary application web site,” explains Robert F. Ruiz, director of admissions at the University of Michigan Medical School. The app is developed by the admissions office of the medical school in alliance with its offices of Enabling Technologies, Applications Development, and Marketing. The office also connects with existing and probable students through various mediums like web-based status pages, e-newsletters, text messaging, social media and on-line chats.

The M.D.Stat+ app can be downloaded free of cost from the iTunes App Store or Android Market. along with the app, a similar smartphone-friendly website umms.med.umich.edu/mdstat/ is also introduced.

Toshiba tablet a decent debut, but it’s no iPad killer

It's no secret Apple's almighty iPad is the reigning king of the tablet world.

And for good reason: the iPad and iPad 2 are a breeze to use; there are more than 500,000 downloadable apps and countless hardware accessories; iPhone and iPod apps world seamlessly on the larger 9.7-inch screen; and built-in support for iTunes on a PC or Mac means your media smoothly synchronizes with the tablet when connected to the computer.

At the same time, the iPad isn't perfect, as you can't easily access websites with Flash content and there's no way to expand the memory via USB or card. it isn't the best at multitasking, either.

Toshiba's first Android-powered tablet — the 10.1-inch Toshiba Tablet (Toshiba Thrive in the U.S.) — aims to offer a compelling alternative to the iPad.

While it does deliver a few things missing from Apple's offerings, and at a lower cost of admission (from $429 for 8GB version), it doesn't come close to usurping Apple's "magical" device, nor does it have a distinct edge over other Android tablets.

The first thing you'll notice with this Android 3.1 ("Honeycomb") tablet is that it's much thicker and heavier than most other tablets. The Toshiba Tablet is 15.8 millimetres thick, which is nearly twice that of the iPad 2's 8.8 millimetre girth. At more than 1.65 pounds, you also feel the weight, especially when holding the tablet and reading an ebook (the iPad 2 is roughly 1.3 pounds). that said, some might like the textured grip on the back of the tablet, plus you can purchase additional colours, if desired. Meh.

In the performance department, the Toshiba Tablet was decent with its NVIDIA Tegra 250 processor (with 1GB of system memory) — games like Angry Birds played smoothly and YouTube videos loaded quickly — but it did take a while for this tablet to change screen orientation when, say, switching from vertical to horizontal view, or the other way around.

The 10.1-inch LED screen was attractive (with its 1280 x 800 resolution), but not as bright as the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Flash sites loaded without problem, which is something not easily done on the iPad — even when using alternate web browsers like SkyFire or Photon.

While I didn't get a chance to test video calling on the Toshiba Tablet, this device does have a 2-megapixel front-facing webcam and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

Where the Toshiba Tablet shines, however, is in its connectivity options. Look along the edges of the tablet and you'll see full-sized ports, including USB 2.0 (add a thumbdrive or accessory such as a keyboard), SecureDigital (SD) memory card slot to easy get data on and off the tablet and a HDMI port to easily connect the tablet to a high-definition television, monitor or projector.

Speaking of connectivity, this Toshiba product is a WiFi-only one — therefore no 3G/4G (cellular) option, which is too bad.

On a side note, it would be remiss not to mention Google's Android 3.1 is a versatile and powerful platform, including a sleek-looking "holographic" user-interface, customizable homescreens, a suite of Google applications and access to the Android Market and its more than 250,000 downloadable applications. (There are some legitimate security concerns with Android's "open-source" nature, but Google has vowed to be more vigilant in identifying and removing apps that attempt to secretly lift user data.)

Battery life on the tablet is decent at about 7.5 hours, but the iPad and iPad 2 are closer to 11 hours. but the Toshiba Tablet lets you swap out the battery for a spare, if desired, which isn't possible on Apple's products.

As you can see, there are clear pros and cons to this Toshiba tablet. on one hand, it adds things missing in the competition by leveraging Toshiba's heritage in the PC space. It's also cheaper than most other tablets at $429 (8GB), $479 (16GB) or $579 (32GB). but when it comes to form factor, quality and quantity of apps and wireless options, the iPad (and other tablets) have the Toshiba Tablet beat.

They've got you covered

You buy them to protect your gadgets. you buy them to make toting them easier. But when it comes to cases for cellphones and other tech devices, you also can buy them for style.

From cutesy-cute to classic, the options are endless.

You have your designer names, such as Kate Spade, Juicy Couture, Vera Bradley, Michael Kors and — why not? — hello Kitty.

You have your vast array of materials, from fabric and silicone to plastic and wood.

And you have a head-spinning selection of designs, including bright colors and jazzy patterns — along with understated ones. Let’s not forget the Etch-A-Sketch iPhone and iPad cases (thinkgeek.com, $24.99 and $39.99) or the cellphone case with built-in bottle opener (iBottle Opener, $20, at uncommongoods.com).

Local interior designer Sandy Nelson carries her Droid incredible in a bright purple acrylic protective case.

"I love picking a bright color because I can find it in the black hole of my handbag.

It doesn’t get lost," she said with a laugh.

Innovations continue. recent introductions include Speck Products’ new ToughShell case for iPhone 4 Ñ designed for rugged environments.

LifeProof shows off its "water, shock, snow and dirt proof" case on videos on its online store offering options for the iPhone 4 (lifeproof.com).

And Uncommon (getuncommon.com) last month announced that its customizeable cases for the iPhone device are now available at KODAK Gallery (kodakgallery.com). Gallery members can personalize their cases using their favorite photos.

You need a case that is compatible with the device, of course, but from there you can find one that reflects your personality Ñ like any fashion accessory.

For women in their late 20s and 30s, "what I see the most are the cases with jewels and a lot of animal prints and woven effects," said Julie DeLoreto, 31, manager of Leelee, 5444 Main St., Williamsville.

"right now I have the BlackBerry with no case, but if I chose one it would be very neutral. I don’t want my cellphone to conflict with my outfit and other accessories. That’s just me; I like things to match," she said.

Whatever you choose, the cases for the devices you tote can be as stylish as your handbag Ñ and even coordinate with it.

And they aren’t just for cellphones. there are cases for e-readers, tablets and laptops.

The Vera Bradley line offers its popular "all in One Wristlet" in a bunch of patterns. it holds a cell phone or music player in the back pocket and an ID in the front window. inside are three credit card slots, a pocket and zippered compartment. other designs include e-reader sleeves, laptop cases and tech cases.

Fans of the brand take different approaches to building their collection, which may include these cases as well as handbags, totes and luggage.

"for some people, everything is matchy-matchy Ñ but a lot of people like to mix it up," said Marsha Dautch, of Reeds/Jenss.

That way, when they are digging through their bags, the smaller cases they are looking for pop out at them.

Others go for total function. Jamie Shaner protects her Droid X in two layers Ñ a protective skin and then a black leather case that clips to her waistband.

"It’s my business phone so it keeps me connected. I need it with me at all times, even in the garden," said Shaner, co-owner of a local organizing/home staging business called Home Solutions of WNY.

If it’s handsome you’re after, other options include the iPhone 4 cases from EXOvault (a brass case with rosewood back costs $165, exovault.com). Or check out the folding, walletlike soft leather Phone Folio at Brookstone ($39.99).
