Man will camp for over a month for iPhone 5

In attempt to experiment how much PR he can get, Rob Shoesmith decided to camp outside the Apple store in Covent Garden London for the release of the next generation iPhone 5 from Apple.

So, yeah, Rob’s sole focus isn’t the new iPhone, but the marketing side of it. That’s why he leave all his cash at home, and wait for companies to endorse him. and he’s done a decent job so far, raking up over £40k worth of sponsorships. He’s received everything from Solar-powered iPhone chargers and web cams to shampoo, aftershave, massive boxes of candy, and you guess it, a box full of garden gnomes. and that’s not even a good part, he also reportedly have a car in his list, a £20,000 loaner Chevrolet car that is.

“People might look at this and say that I’m being greedy but I want to prove that it can be done in the most over-the-top way.” he said.

“The postman doesn’t like me right now,”

There’s a loophole though in his experiment, we never heard anything about the iPhone 5 officially from Apple.

Technology Live: News and gadgets from our network of reporters

In case you missed the news, Skype for iPad is now available — or to be more specific, Skype for iPad 2, as cameras are required for video chatting, of course.

As with the various versions of Skype for computers, smartphones and televisions, Skype for iPad lets you video call other Skype users, anywhere in the world.

Why download and use Skype for iPad when the iPad 2 comes preloaded with the similar FaceTime video calling app? While the video quality is comparable in our testing, FaceTime is limited to Apple devices (some iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Mac models) and only works over Wi-Fi. Skype, on the other hand, works with multiple platforms and can be used over Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

There are a few other advantages: you can simultaneously instant message with the person your talking with, plus if you’ve used Skype for years you’ve likely accumulated a sizable contacts list, which is automatically imported when you log in to your account on the touch-screen tablet. While Skype-to-Skype calls are free (data charges notwithstanding), you can also “Skype Out” to call a land line or mobile phone for a few cents a minute. you also have an option to pay for an incoming number if you’d like to turn your tablet into a mobile phone, of sorts (complete with voice mail and call forwarding).

Similar to FaceTime, you see the person you’re chatting with full screen, while you’re in a smaller window (with FaceTime, you can move this picture-in-picture around the screen, but it appears to be locked for Skype). by default, you’re using the front-facing camera but can tap to bring up some options at the bottom of the screen, where you can select to use the outer camera. this is handy if you want the person you’re chatting with to see what you’re looking at. but this is one extra step you don’t have to go through with FaceTime, as the “swap camera” icon is on your main screen with Apple’s software.

While video and audio quality was more or less indistinguishable between Skype and FaceTime, motion seemed a bit smoother on FaceTime. this is understandably the case when Skype calls were made over 3G, but it was the case over Wi-Fi as well.

Overall, Skype for iPad provides fun and free video-chatting for iPad 2 owners that bests FaceTime in most areas yet falls a bit short in others.

Verizon 4G comparison: HTC ThunderBolt vs. LG Revolution vs. Samsung Droid Charge

Who makes the best Verizon 4G smartphone? we pit the HTC ThunderBolt vs. the LG Revolution vs. the Samsung Droid Charge to find out.

So you’ve heard of Verizon’s new 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) network, and you want in. maybe you’re a Verizon customer and your contract has run out, or maybe you’re planning to switch to Verizon from another carrier. bottom line: you want a 4G smartphone and you don’t know which one to pick. We’re here to help.

Verizon’s 4G network has been up and running for a few months and there are currently three different phones to choose from, with a fourth coming soon. The LG Revolution, HTC ThunderBolt, and Samsung Droid Charge can be found at any Verizon retail store and we recommend you try all three out. The Motorola Droid Bionic will be coming at some point in August. before you make your decision, however, you may want to read our notes on the three phones. These impressions come from hands-on time spent with all three devices.

What is better about Verizon 4G?

I could go into detail, but I already have in our 4G guide. Check it out to learn what makes Verizon’s 4G LTE network different from Sprint’s 4G WiMax network and what separates both of them from the supposed 4G networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. for the sake of brevity though, Verizon’s 4G is currently much faster than any other network because it uses a next-generation technology called LTE.

Downsides to all first-generation LTE phones

Fat: Being on the bleeding edge of technology means you’re going to hurt a bit. Verizon’s 4G LTE network is still in its infancy, as is the wireless receiving technology that is embedded into all of these phones. The components needed to connect to the network are expensive, large, and handset manufacturers haven’t had much experience with them yet. As such, all three of these phones have some noticeable drawbacks when compared to some high-end 3G phones coming out. All three of these phones are a bit fatter and thicker than their 3G equivalents. They aren’t huge, mind you, but they’re about as fat as smartphones were two or three years ago.

Android 2.2: Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) updates are finally coming to many devices, but all three of these phones are still running Android 2.2 (Froyo) for now, and that’s no fun. Gingerbread adds some nice polish to Android and seems to manage battery life better as well, among other things. some of the features of Gingerbread can be found here and here.

Battery life: All three of these phones have been criticized for having short battery life. Most users have learned how to toggle 4G on and off to save battery or have invested in extra battery packs or simply charged their phone more often, but not one of these devices manages power as well as a competitive 3G phone.

Single-core: while many high-end 3G phones are dual-core, all of these phones are single-core, meaning you are working with about as much power as the 1GHz smartphones that came out a year ago. The Droid Bionic, we hear, may be the first dual-core 4G phone on Verizon.

With that out of the way, let’s breakdown the competition.

HTC ThunderBolt

The HTC ThunderBolt was the first 4G LTE device on Verizon and is still probably the most famous and best-selling of the bunch. At one point, Verizon representatives estimated that it was outselling the iPhone 4 on the network and HTC has reported strong demand for the phone.

Price: $250 with two-year contract

Good: HTC’s Sense UI is probably the best of any manufacturer and HTC’s included apps are quite useful compared to the others. we also like the phone’s kickstand, which makes it possible to watch movies on the phone. The ThunderBolt also has a good feel to it, and feels more solid than plastic phones like the Droid Charge. The phone has 768MB of RAM—more than the competition.

Bad: The phone had some random reboot problems, though they have been fixed. The ThunderBolt is also the thickest of the three phones, but not by much. Finally, it has the weakest battery of the bunch at 1400mAh capacity.

Samsung Droid Charge

Having seen the issues arising with the ThunderBolt, Samsung took better care to improve battery life on the Droid Charge, the second 4G LTE phone on Verizon. Read our full review of the Droid Charge to get a complete rundown on the phone.

Price: $300 with two-year contract

Good: for some reason, the Droid Charge seems to connect at even faster speeds than the ThunderBolt (and much faster than the Revolution) in our NYC testing. It also has the largest battery at 1600mAh and gets noticeably better life than the ThunderBolt. It comes with a 32GB MicroSD card preinstalled, which is huge. Finally, the Droid Charge has a great Super AMOLED screen that is brighter than either of the other two phones.

Bad: It’s the most expensive of the three phones, and we don’t like how slippery and plasticy the Droid Charge shell feels. Despite the preinstalled microSD card, the phone only has 2GB of internal storage. Samsung’s TouchWiz interfact is certainly better than some, but we don’t like the color combinations and the whole experience is a bit disjointed when compared to HTC’s Sense.

LG Revolution

LG was the third entrant into the 4G LTE game and when it decided to call its phone “Revolution” it may not have been referring to the 4G. Nope. this is an Android phone that doesn’t have Google services. It runs on Bing.

Price: $200 with two-year contract

Good: The LG Revolution is, by far, our favorite phone to play with, of the three. Its screen has some kind of magical slick coating to it, and the overall construction of the phone is solid. It also has a decent battery and 16GB of internal storage. we also don’t mind the look and design of LG’s custom Android user interface.

Bad: We’d be keen to recommend the LG if it didn’t have one crippling huge flaw: It’s a Google Android phone, but it runs on Bing…yes, Bing. Much like the Samsung Fascinate, LG has taken advantage of Verizon’s ties to Bing and made it the sole search provider for the phone. Not only does this feel like a bit of a slap in the face to Google (they did offer the OS for free, after all), Bing just isn’t as good as Google’s services. You’ll have to dig around the Android Market to save yourself from Bing Maps and use all of the Google services you expect on an Android phone, but no matter what you do, we haven’t found a way to remove Bing as the default search for the phone. how depressing. aside from that, the camera is 5 megapixels, meaning its slightly less capable than the 8-megapixel cameras on the other two devices. for some reason, the Revolution seems to get slower 4G connections than the other two, at least in upper Manhattan where we tested it.

Our pick: Samsung Droid Charge

The Droid Charge is not the best looking Android phone we’ve seen, but we think it’s the most well-rounded 4G device currently on the market. It gets good enough battery life that you shouldn’t have the itching desire to return it after a week, and the screen is much brighter and more vivid than the other two devices. Samsung’s TouchWiz UI isn’t great, but it isn’t bad either, and the camera on the phone is solid, pulling in good color and with more accurate brightness compared to other manufacturers. It is the most costly of the bunch, but the 32GB memory card helps ease the pain.

With that said, the HTC ThunderBolt is certainly a decent phone as well and, hey, if you are okay using Bing as your search engine, we highly recommend the LG Revolution. It’s the cheapest phone of the bunch, and pretty decent in most every category.

The Droid Bionic is coming out in the next few weeks. We’ll make sure to update this article when it arrives.

SafetyGrid™ adds Monitored Personal Alarm Services to its iPhone and iPad Panic Button Application

Chesterfield, MI (PRWEB) August 12, 2011

SafetyGrid™ adds Monitored Personal Alarm Services to its iPhone and iPad Application

Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, SafetyGrid utilizes a Patent Pending enhanced alert messaging system that now includes Monitored Personal Alarm Services provided by GEOS Alliance.

The GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) is an integrated global system of best-of-breed services that encompass security, safety and reliable communication. GEOS has a communications center with 24-hour staffing with translators fluent in 150 languages, and direct connections to police and emergency services in nearly every country worldwide. Specialists in the fields of international, personal and corporate protection, communications, international Search and Rescue (SAR) and worldwide emergency response, GEOS provides a well-rounded balance to the SafetyGrid system.

Unlike other systems, SafetyGrid messages supports silent two-way alarm acknowledgment. the user is immediately aware of whether or not their request for help message was successfully sent, as well as if it was acknowledged by one of their contacts, as a visual icon in the app changes based on the state of their alarm. the silent alarm feature is a plus in the event of a kidnapping or other emergency where a discreet alarm is necessary.

Alarm messages are sent to the users chosen contacts via SMS text messaging and email, as well as by automated phone voice messaging. If the user subscribes to popular social media networks, requests for information from friends can also be sent. Information collected can then be shared with GEOS providing a real time information flow of intelligence. SafetyGrid also utilizes the GPS function of the iPhone or iPad, giving alarm recipients an approximate location of the person in need of assistance.

The GEOS Search and Rescue Benefit is included in the Monitoring Services and is , underwritten by the Lloyds of London the Benefit provides up to $100,000 per year to fund the cost of search and rescue operations for SafetyGrid members who enroll in this service.

Pricing starts at $9.99 per month for the GEOS Silver package subscription that covers one individual for up to $100,000 a year in search and rescues costs. For a one-time fee, there’s a $19.99 GEOS Adventurer package that provides coverage for one person for up to 30 days and up to $50,000 in search and rescue costs (great for travelers). Finally, the GEOS Gold package for $119 covers up to 4 family members including one SAR Benefit for up to $100,000 in search and rescue costs (2 x $50,000 per incident per year). Additional SAR Benefit members may be added to any package for between $13.95 (family members) and $17.95 (non family) per year.

SafetyGrid has also added the GEOS Medi-Vac™ plus program, which is a “Medical Evacuation and Repatriation” membership program. this single, life-saving source for medical evacuation and emergency assistance which will transport members to a hospital of choice near their home from anywhere in the world by private jet air ambulance.

All plans are activated over the Internet without the inconvenience of paperwork and coverage can be immediate or purchased for a future trip.

Through the end of August the SafetyGrid App is free and includes five full-featured non-monitored alarms, which can be used for testing or for actual emergencies. Additional alarm credits are also available for purchase, or the user may also continue to use the system without SMS / Voice at no additional charge. the system will send Alarm Notifications and Test Alarm Notifications via Email.

“We’re confident that the addition of the GEOS Search and Rescue and Medi-Vac service features make SafetyGrid the application of choice for students, travelers and individuals in all walks of life who value personal safety.” says Jim Hankins, developer and founder of SafetyGrid. “Including the offerings of GEOS, a company who has been credited for saving thousands of lives since it’s start of service in 2007, creates incredible value for our brand. we are fortunate to have the opportunity to provide these services to our clients, and look forward to offering additional life saving features moving forward.”

SafetyGrid is not meant to be a replacement for dialing 911 or contacting the local authorities in the event of an emergency. this is simply another mode of contact when dialing 911 and speaking into a phone is not an option or for when one is traveling overseas, where the emergency number isn’t known or where language is an issue.

Top Recommended iPhone 4 AccessoriesThe « wreckommender.com

The Apple iPhone 4 is a device you can perform all kinds of activities on without any additional help. with a few well selected accessories, however, your phone has even greater capabilities. there are a few accessories that are almost mandatory, such as a quality case, but many others are just to enhance certain features of the phone. to help you get the most of your iPhone 4, we’ll be reviewing a few accessories that are worth looking into.

Motorola has come out with Bluetooth stereo headphones, Motorokr S305, that free your hands while talking on the phone or playing music. You can use the mic that’s built into these headphones whenever you answer the phone.

Hands free talking can be very useful, and in many cases safer, as when you’re driving. for safety reasons, it’s a legal requirement in some states to use a headset if you’re driving and talking on the phone. between phone calls, music, videos and even the ability to listen to audiobooks, there are lots of good reasons to get great hands free headphones for your iPhone 4. so, if you want a good set of Bluetooth headphones to get the best possible sound from your iPhone 4, take a look at the Motorokr S305 from Motorola.

Speakers are another accessory of the iPhone 4 that you should consider if you frequently listen to music on your iPhone for better sound quality. there are a variety of styles available if you know what your budget is and what your personal preferences are. this accessory is small and easily transportable with Bluetooth technology and wireless versions. If you have the dough to shell out (upwards of 300 bucks) you can find sound that’s top quality and state of the art too. but this is not necessary with the available options.

Sound buffs may want to get the Belkin TuneCast Auto Live FM Transmitter, which gives you the ability to transmit music from your iPhone to your car stereo. this unit also uses GPS assisted scanning, which means that it will automatically locate the FM station that has the best reception based on your present location. this way, you won’t have to listen to static as the reception weakens for one station, as the system will automatically pick this up and change stations. the Belkin TuneCast is an efficient, wireless system that lets you run your car stereo from your iPhone or iPod.

Being able to play anything you can get on your iPhone 4 through your car stereo can be fun, especially if you spend a lot of time driving. iPhone 4 accessories come in many varieties, and you could easily get addicted to buying one after the other. Depending on your interests and lifestyle, though, you probably can get by with a handful of well chosen accessories. the above iPhone 4 accessories are some popular ones, but there are certainly many others worth exploring as well.

Of the new iPods, a Bluetooth, wearable nano is the one to watch

August 12, 2011 at 4:47 pm

We’ve been hearing so much about the new iPhone 5 that it has all but drown out any talk of the iPods, which are traditionally released at the September Apple event as well.  There hasn’t been any definitive word, but I expect them to get an update as well before the holiday shopping season.

The new iPod touch will likely head in the same direction as the iPhone 5 – faster A5 processor and better backside camera (hopfully 3MP w/ autofocus?) etc.  I don’t expect a lot of innovation on what is already a pretty incredible little device.  Perhaps a $199 entry level price tag (a $30 drop – which we already see quite often) will be the marquee new spec.

The iPod classic wasn’t upgraded last year and wasn’t on the keynote slide (below) where Steve Jobs said “we’ve got All-new designs for every model” which kind of makes it feel dead to me.

You can still buy Classics in their 2 year old form a year later but with iCloud kicking into gear, I think Apple’s chances of killing it this year are better than keeping it around.  More awesome/unlikely would be giving it Wifi and turning out a big HDD wireless media hub like the Seagate GoFlex Satelite.

But where I think there will be real innovation, however, will be the iPod nano…

The iPod nano was upgraded/downgraded last year to to remove its camera functionality as well as the large screen and click-wheel interface.  Replacing, is an almost Shuffle-sized little touchscreen with four little icons and simple little apps, including FM radio, music app, photos app, voice notes and pedometer for NikePlus.

Most importantly, it dropped the scroll-wheel based OS that came from Apple’s original purchase of PortalPlayer many moons ago.  The new Nano OS is now a new touch-screen based OS that is a spinoff of iOS.  This is the first generation of the product.   There is a lot of room to innovate the nano.

First take a look at what the competition is doing.  Sony released the ‘Liveview‘ accessory at about the same time as the nano was released.  You’ve probably never heard of it but it is an impressive technology demonstration:

A more compelling platform may be the WIMM Android platform which is a full fledged, stand-alone device which includes not only Bluetooth but Wifi:

LiveView connects to Sony’s phones via Bluetooth.  Interestingly, Apple announced support for the ultra-low power Bluetooth 4.0 spec in its latest MacBook Airs and Minis and is now a heavyweight on the Bluetooth spec board of directors.  It would be surprising if Apple didn’t bring that same low power Bluetooth 4 to iOS devices next month.

With it will come an easy, low power way to sync iPod nanos and iOS devices (and sure, Macs and AppleTVs which also conveniently have inactive Bluetooth).  You could get social feeds, email alerts, text messages, iMessages and everything else that Apple channels through its alerts notifications.

iPod nanos were finding their way onto people’s wrists before they were even released so a Nano-watch tie up makes a lot of sense.  Perhaps Apple makes a ‘wrist mount’?  A Bike mount?  A steering wheel mount?  A necklace?

Communication with iOS Devices – making it an iOS accessory – would be huge. With low powered Bluetooth, your songs and picture albums sync automatically.  The pedometer app never needs to be plugged in.  You could even theoretically stream video to your tiny Nano screen.

Speaking of video, that leaked case from earlier this year had a camera.  I don’t know how to rectify that, especially on the back side but there it is.  Perhaps this isn’t a camera hole after all and is for something else like charging.

But it could get better.  With an IP stack, you could even connect to the iOS device’s internet connection over Bluetooth.  There, you could stream media from your iCloud directly (rather than having to sync up).  YouTube, Flickr MLB all become options – even Nuance Voice navigation becomes an unlikely possiblity.

Perhaps most importantly, you could also lose the 8GB or 16GB of storage and go with something more modest like 2GB of local storage which would make the device smaller and cheaper (offsetting extra wireless parts costs).  Dropping this thing to $100 would be huge.

Sure the screen is small – perhaps Apple throws some more pixels at the situation. 320×240 would be better for video.

But with 200 million iOS devices becoming almost ubiquitous among Apple users, turning the Nano into an iOS accessory (like the AppleTV) seems like a good long term strategy.

Canopy Kapok review: iPhone tripod mount for serious shutterbugs

With its 5-megapixel camera and 720p video recorder, theiPhone 4 can capture some pretty impressive-looking images–as long as you hold it perfectly still. indeed, as any savvy photographer or videographer knows, if you want the best results, you need a tripod.

The Canopy Kapok is an iPhone 4 case with a built-in tripod mount. It also comes with a pair of shutter-control buttons and a stand. It’s not a perfect product, and the impending release of iOS 5 (which will turn the iPhone’s volume-down button into a shutter release) limits its overall value. But you may find it worthwhile, if only for mounting your iPhone on your favorite tripod.

The Kapok comes in a clear-plastic shell that’s maddeningly difficult to open–until you realize that the thick black bottom of the shell is actually the included stand. also, there’s a finger-hole near the top where you can reach in to push the Kapok down and out.

The case is your typical matte-black two-piece, with about 5/8 of an inch extra at the bottom to accommodate the dock connector. other than that, it’s very slim and light–good all-around protection if you decide to leave your iPhone in it full time.

Also, the moment you plug your iPhone into the case, you’re directed to the App Store page to download the free Canopy Camera Tools app–a nice little time-saver. more on that app in a moment.

You can use the case with the included base, which sports a mini-ball tripod, or any standard tripod. I like the base, though it’s not terribly versatile: it’s designed solely to sit on a flat surface and affords a limited range of movement.

The case sports two shutter-control buttons, the functions of which aren’t immediately clear. nor are they explained anywhere–not in the app, not in the included instruction manual, and not on Canopy’s Web site (which does have some instructional videos, just none of them focusing on the buttons).

When used with the Canopy Camera Tools app, the left button locks the exposure and white-balance settings (or snaps a still photo during video recording), while the right one focuses and fires the shutter. These latter actions require a half-press and full-press, just like on many real cameras.

Canopy has released Kapok APIs to developers so that other camera apps can be made to work with it. For the moment, however, it’s Camera Tools or nothing; the case doesn’t work with Apple’s stock Camera app.

Fortunately, Camera Tools is quite capable, offering such advanced features as separate focus and exposure points, time-delay shooting, and interval recording. What’s missing is any kind of HDR option, which I’ve found can really help in light-challenged settings. (Tip: You can use the app even if you don’t buy the Kapok.)

At $69.95, the Canopy Kapok isn’t cheap, but it seems reasonable for what you get. indeed, if you really want to maximize your iPhone’s value as a camera and/or camcorder, this gives you the key ingredient: tripod support. (That said, there are much more affordable options available, like the $20 Glif and $39.95 Joby Gorillapod. And once iOS 5 arrives, you’ll get a “free” shutter-release button to boot.)

Kiwi Solar Charger For iPhone Review

Kiwi Solar Charger For iPhone Review

The Kiwi is a versital solar charger which is capable of charging a variety of devices including the iPhone. unlike most solar chargers for the iPhone, the Kiwi has three solar panels. The Kiwi’s solar panels connect together with a central connector. Simply unfold the panels and the Kiwi resembles a “solar fan”. In the most compact form, the solar charger is about the same size as the iPhone so it fits well in your pocket or in a backpack. Just a few of the other devices the Kiwi can charge include Blackberrys, Palm smartphones, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, and the Kindle.

To charge your iPhone or other portable devices, simply connect the solar charger to your device with the charging cord. In all the Kiwi Solar Charger takes a solid fifteen hours of sunlight to completely charge its 2000mAh battery. if you’re in need of a faster charge, the Kiwi Solar Charger can also charge from your computer’s usb or a wall outlet in about five hours. You can quickly find out how much of a charge the device has by pressing the chargers test button. When you press the button up to four lights will light up. A single light equals fifteen to thirty-five percent charge; two lights is thirty-six to sixty-five percent charge; three lights is sixty-six to ninety-five percent charge; and all four lights is essentially a full charge.

While the Kiwi is a little slow to charge when compared to other solar chargers for the iPhone, it makes up for this with its versatility.  The device can withstand standard wear and tear and can even be charged in a variety of ways. your best bet is to combine charging methods to insure there is always power available. You can check out videos of the Kiwi Solar Charger (and a few other solar chargers) in this post that has 5 iPhone Solar Charger Videos.
