Buying a mobile phone can often be a headache. We’ve answered a few of frequently asked questions to help aid your purchase.

What is 3G?

3G is a third-generation technology of mobile phone standards. the benefits of a 3G network as opposed to a 2G network include the ability to support greater number of both voice and data customers, and higher data rates (such as mobile Internet access). 3G networks are also capable of video calling. Telstra’s Next G, Optus and Vodafone are current, Australian examples of service providers with 3G networks.

Am I better off with a pre-paid account, or a monthly billing system?

This depends on intended usage. for minimal usage, a pre-paid account is ideal as you can easily keep track of your expenditure and pay only when you need credit. If you intend to make a lot of calls, then a monthly billing system would be more appropriate, as they generally offer cheaper call rates than a pre-paid account.

What is a capped plan?

A capped plan means you only pay a certain amount per month if your usage doesn’t exceed a maximum value.

What is SMS?

SMS stands for Short Message Service and is the sending of short (160 characters or less) text messages to and from mobile phones. SMS messaging is a standard feature on all mobile phones. Cinemax’s newly-approved Max GO iOS app is making waves because it allows streaming of late night adult programming that may violate Apple’s ban on pornography on the App Store. HBO began offering the Max Go app late last week, providing U.S.-based Cinemax subscribers with streaming access to the network’s feature films, documentaries and late night programming. the free app works with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iTunes rates the app as +17, its highest rating, because of frequent/intense violence; sexual content or nudity; profanity or crude humor; and alcohol, tobacco or drug use references. the application has quickly gained attention because of the inclusion of Max After dark adult programming, which includes the “soft core” erotic films and explicit television shows that earned the network its nickname of “Skinemax.” Critics have questioned Apple’s decision to approve the app, given its ban on pornographic content in the App Store. Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines specifically state that “Apps containing pornographic material, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings,” will be rejected.” the Cinemax controversy comes months after adult magazine Playboy decided to make its back catalog available on the iPad via an HTML5 web app. the publication’s official App Store app does not contain nudity. last year, Apple CEO Steve Jobs specifically called out pornography as a reason for curating apps on the iPhone, citing a pornography store for the rival Google Android operating system. “You can download it, your kids can download it,” Jobs said. “That’s a place we don’t want to go, so we’re not going to.”

Reviews: Fuse PowerSlice Universal Charger

Whereas competing charging stations ship with everything that’s needed to start charging iPods and iPhones right away, and can’t be customized much thereafter, Fuse has taken a different approach with PowerSlice. it refers to the black and silver circular charging surface as the “Base Unit,” shipping it with nothing more than a wall charger, a rear USB port, and paper inserts where two user-installable charging tips called “Slices” will go. Slices are sold individually for $10 each, and come in versions for not only iPhones and iPods, but also for competing devices, as well as mini-USB and micro-USB variations—you pick the tips you want to install. the Base Unit includes a spot for a third Slice that’s initially covered by a removable plastic panel, while the fourth quadrant on the unit’s top has a non-removable plastic name badge.

Assuming that you were to purchase the Base Unit without anything else, it would be all but useless; you’d need to self-supply a USB cable to connect to the aforementioned rear port, which is labeled with a “not for smartphones” sticker. For some reason, this port won’t charge iPods or iPhones, but it did seem to work with everything else we threw at it, regardless of whether PowerSlice was hosting three other devices or nothing else.

If you’ve started doing the math in your head already, PowerSlice’s economics might not be making sense: at $45 for the Base Unit and $10 for each Slice, you’d be looking at a $65 minimum investment for the Base and two Slices, or $75 if you populate all three slots on top with charging tips. But Fuse says that most places won’t be selling the Base Unit by itself, let alone for the full $45 MSRP, and a quick search online confirmed this: Amazon.com is actually selling a $50 bundle that includes two iPod/iPhone Slices, while the Base Unit retails for $26 to $35 at various stores. this pricing is considerably more aggressive than the MSRP suggests, and places PowerSlice directly in the same category as rival charges from better-known Apple accessory makers.

From a performance standpoint, however, PowerSlice is only close to ideal. the good news is that the Slices charged whatever we connected to them: iPhones and iPods at full speed, as well as everything from Bluetooth headsets to Wi-Fi disk drives and MiFi wireless hotspots. You can control power to all of the ports at once using a single centrally-mounted power button, which provides “on” status with a small but bright light. It’s simple, clean, and apart from the rear USB port’s need for an additional cable, a massive reduction in wires and space.

But on the flip side, the Slices are somewhat unusual charging surfaces. everything stands completely upright; iPods and iPhones in certain cases won’t fit on Fuse’s iP1 tips—a problem that could have been avoided with extended tips or standard Universal Dock-style recessed wells—and since there are some Apple devices that all but demand cases, this could be an issue for users. If you’re planning to use PowerSlice to charge multiple Apple devices at once, you’ll have to live with the fact that only one screen is likely to be visible on the top surface at one time from a given viewing angle, as the other screens will be off on 90-degree angles; rivals tend to place screens next to each other or in front of one another, for better or worse. Additionally, if for whatever reason you’re hoping to charge devices that have ports on one side of their widest edges, you may need to arrange the tips to avoid banging your devices into each other. In our testing with a bunch of different accessories, this wasn’t a problem, but given the huge variety of mini- and micro-USB devices that can plug into PowerSlice, your mileage may vary.

Overall, PowerSlice is a good first Apple-ready charging solution from Fuse. While the limitations of its rear USB port and somewhat case-unfriendly iPhone/iPod charging tip may stifle some Apple device users, its space efficiency and relatively aggressive street pricing will endear it to others. Tweaks to the iP1 tip could easily enable the current Base Unit design to accommodate all encased iPhones and iPods, and with a little under-the-hood work, the rear USB port could be upgraded to refuel iPads, as well. We look forward to seeing what Fuse does with upcoming versions of its chargers; for now, PowerSlice is worth recommending to users who don’t use cases, and shop aggressively enough online to find the unit at its best available prices.

Switching back to Nexus S was refreshing. my biggest gripe is how easily the screen and phone surface smudge compared to iPhone 4. Google’s cloud sync and notifications features are far superior to Apple’s — although iCloud will catch up and may even do better when available in a few months. I won’t go back to iPhone 4. my reasons for preferring Nexus S haven’t changed much since my December review.

I improved battery life such that Nexus S is almost as good as Apple’s smartphone in the most unexpected way — and it was done accidentally. I turned on WiFi. my neighborhood is notorious for bad reception from all cellular carriers. looks to me like the Nexus S burns down the battery faster when 3G only, because the phone seeks a signal for fetching email and syncing. I had expected WiFi would be another service taxing the battery, when instead it offers relief.

Nexus S isn’t the best Android smartphone available — some other Galaxy S models have better glass, superior camera and other extras. but the phone is light, comfortable to hold, responsive to touch (almost to a fault) and overall offers an excellent balance of capabilities set against battery life. It’s the Android handset I’d recommend most non-geeks buy.

Right now, I’m using a loaner Nexus S for T-Mobile. Google provided one that goes back today, and I switched to another provided by Samsung yesterday. but I was ready to plunk down $99 for the AT&T model (I have accounts with both carriers, but AT&T is primary); free is just too hard to resist. I’ll buy one later today, providing my local Best Buy Mobile doesn’t sell out first.

It’s a risky purchase, too. the deal could be preparation for a new Nexus model coming — that Best Buy is clearing store shelves for the successor. but, hey, I can always hand it over to my wife. LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) – Strong demand for smartphonesand tablet computers is helping Carphone Warehouse ,Europe’s biggest independent mobile phone retailer, to cope withgenerally subdued consumer spending, it said on Wednesday.

Taylor said the group hoped to announce a refinancing of itsBest Buy Europe joint venture in coming days, which DeutscheBank analysts think could open the way for Carphone to returnthe bulk of its 120 million pound ($197 million) cash pile toshareholders this year.

Carphone’s shares, which dipped in early trade, bounced backto trade up 7.7 percent at 436 pence by 1115 GMT.

Taylor also told analysts Carphone was seeing a pick-up indemand for tablet computers using 3G as well as those linked tosmartphone products, where it can make more money than tabletsthat only use wi-fi.

Connections at Best Buy Mobile in the United States climbed12.3 percent, lagging forecasts for a 17.5 percent rise.

But Taylor said weakness in prepay phones was offset by astronger performance in more profitable contract phones.

Carphone also said it added a net 68,000 customers at VirginMobile France, ahead of an expected 40,000.

Citi analysts saw little change to full-year expectations asa result of the update. They are projecting a 28 percent rise inearnings per share to 18.5 pence.

Taylor said Carphone and Best Buy were still evaluating thefuture of their 11 British megastores.

He declined to comment on whether they are interested inbuying Comet. People familiar with the matter told Reuters onFriday they were not involved in the auction.

Taylor said Carphone was interested in selling propertyassets, but not yet.

“We haven’t seen the yields necessarily contract as much aswe’d like to see,” he said.

iPhone 5 Faces HTC Vigor, is it Next LTE Dual Core HTC Thunderbolt?

HTC revealed what they can bring to the table with the HTC Thunderbolt LTE 4G single-core smartphone, which has dethroned iPhone 4 for a while on the Verizon network. The icing on the cake was the HTC Status, a smartphone specifically designed to make it easier to connect to Facebook.

If the rumors about the HTC Vigor are true, the new smartphone will come with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution display. The iPhone 4 has a display resolution of 960 x 640 pixels for its 3.5-inch screen, while latest news on iPhone 5 points towards larger display screen stretched right to the edge of the device.

Even the iPad 2, Apple’s 9.7-inch tablet, has only a 1024 x 768 pixels resolution display. Apple’s original iPad and iPad 2 have same screen size. However, if the iPhone 5 is expected to sport a larger display (between 3.7 and four inches), the display resolution is expected to increase, most probably to that of the iPad 2, or it may retain the same resolution as that of iPhone 4. In fact, most of the smartphones today have 800 x 480 pixels display support while few other phones from Motorola sport 960 x 540 pixels resolution.

The next big surprise in the HTC Vigor is the dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC with a 1.5GHz CPU and Adreno 220 GPU, quite likely the MSM8660 in the EVO 3D and the upcoming HTC Puccini tablet. Most smartphones don’t exceed a 1.2 GHz processor and very few are reported to surpass the 1.4 GHz range. with the iPhone 5 likely to feature iPad 2’s A5 processor, most rumors point towards a 1.2 GHz processor, while iPhone 4 features a 1 GHz processor, and iPad 2 comes with 900 MHz processor.

Recently, the Qualcomm Snapdragon roadmap leaks revealed that the next generation Snapdragon chips, codenamed Krait, will run in speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 1.7GHz and come with the latest Adreno 225 GPU beginning in Q4 2011.

HTC Vigor will run on Android 2.3.4 version and according to the NenaMark1 benchmark score, the Vigor with be available on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The iPhone 5 will have iOS 5 and is less likely to come with 4G LTE support.

In fact, HTC Vigor was first spotted among a batch of several trademark applications from HTC in July 2009 which included Tattoo and Imagio, but the Vigor branding has never been attached to a particular handset so far.

In early July, there was a report about the HTC Vigor featuring a six megapixel camera, and there is a possibility that it may be the Mecha S Thunderbolt mini that was caught in the wild few months ago. Pantech Pursuit II (AT&T)

Much like the original Pantech Pursuit (3 stars), the Pantech Pursuit II offers AT&T subscribers a solid messaging cell phone with a responsive touch screen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It’s a good choice for users looking to talk and text, but if you feel like surfing the Web, you’d be better served by an inexpensive smartphone.

Design, call Quality, and Apps The Pursuit II is just a touch larger than its predecessor. it measures 4 by 2.4 by .6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.5 ounces. It’s made entirely of shiny, hard plastic, but it feels solid. The lime green accent band and details aren’t to my taste, but they add a touch of visual interest. The display is still the same 2.8-inches with 240-by-320 pixel resolution, though luckily it’s a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive this time around.

Sliding the screen up reveals a four-row QWERTY keyboard with matte plastic keys. They’re slightly raised and easy to press, and typing long messages was a breeze. There are large physical Send, end, and back buttons beneath the display, which are all easy to use. There are no function keys, but they aren’t necessary given the solid touch screen.

The Pursuit is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. call quality was good overall. Voices sound full and rich in the phone’s earpiece, if just a touch fuzzy. On the other end, calls made with the phone are clear and natural, though noise cancellation is just mediocre. The speakerphone sounds clear as well, and volume levels go extremely high. Voice quality was solid over an Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars), though again just a bit fuzzy. Battery life was good, at 5 hours and 53 minutes of talk time.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions The Pursuit II comes with quite a lot of bloatware, like many other AT&T feature phones. It’s mostly scattered throughout the main menu, amongst the rest of the phone’s apps. It’s easy to avoid, but a needless hassle. Email support can connect you to your AOL, AIM, AT&T, Gmail, or Hotmail account (along with plenty others), but it costs $5 per month (with a 30-day free trial) on top of your data plan. AIM, Windows Live, and Yahoo IM accounts are also available, though messages (both incoming and outgoing) are charged as texts.

Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter “apps” are all included, but they’re really just quick links to the mobile sites. There’s also AT&T Social Net, a useful social aggregator that includes Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and RSS feeds, and runs in the background. The phone’s browser does a nice job of rendering full HTML web pages, though it isn’t terribly fast. AT&T’s Navigator is also included, which offers TeleNav-powered voice directions for $9.99 per month. There’s also the standard slew of apps, from calculator and calendar to stop watch and voice memo recorder.

The biggest problem with this phone, and most AT&T feature phones in general, is data pricing. if you plan to use any of the included web-based services, you’re looking at $15 per month for unlimited data, or $30 for unlimited messaging and data. So if you take that $15 data charge and add $5 per month for email, you’re spending $20 per month. for that amount of money, you’d be much better served by a smartphone like the iPhone 3GS ($49, 4.5 stars), paying $25 per month for 2GB of data that you can really put to good use.

There’s 217MB of free internal storage, along with a microSD card slot that accepts cards up to 32GB. No card is included, but my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. The Pursuit II comes equipped with a great music player, but a proprietary headphone jack and no headphones in the box render it close to useless. Music sounded fine over the phone’s speaker, and over Altec Lansing BackBeat Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to play 3GP and MPEG-4 videos, which looked good on the phone’s screen, but again, this feature isn’t as useful without headphones.

The Pursuit II’s 2-megapixel camera takes decent photos. Images snapped outdoors were surprisingly sharp, though photos taken inside weren’t as good; they looked a little less focused, and blown out around lights. you can also record video, though the highest resolution is 320-by-240 pixels. Recorded videos were smooth, but looked a little dark and grainy. Images and video can be transferred via email, MMS, Bluetooth, or microSD card.

Much like the original, the Pantech Pursuit II is a good messaging device that’s held by back by bloatware, a proprietary headphone jack, and pricey data plans. if all you’re looking to do is talk and text, the Pursuit II is a fine choice. but if you plan to throw email and/or social networking into the mix, you’d be better off with an inexpensive smartphone like the iPhone 3GS or the Samsung Captivate ($49.99, 4 stars). Both cost the same amount as the Pursuit II upfront, and while you may pay a little more for data, the amount you gain in features and functionality is worth it.

If you don’t want a smartphone and are willing to drop the physical keyboard, the HTC Freestyle has a nicer screen, stronger multimedia features and an even better user interface ($99.99, 4 stars). The LG Neon II ($29.99, 3 stars), on the other hand, has a nice slide-out keyboard and works great as a music player, though its touch screen leaves much to be desired.
