Reviews: iHome iDM15 Portable Rechargeable Bluetooth Speakers

The story with iDM15 is fairly classic iHome, offering thoughtful design and good value for the dollar, plus respectable rather than mindblowing audio quality. For the price, you get two silver battery-powered speakers, as well as a hard plastic carrying box that converts into an iPad/iPad 2 stand. Volumetrically, the compacted-down speakers and box occupy approximately 50% more space as the BTS200, but when they’re expanded out with the included cabling—one wire to connect the speakers, and a dual wire for charging and auxiliary audio input—you have what looks like a much larger audio platform, complete with the benefit of wider stereo separation.

Given that BTS200 uniquely includes full iPhone recharging capability via a special detachable battery, it bears mention that iDM15’s stand is just a plastic frame without charging functionality for iPhones, iPods, or iPads; iHome’s rechargeable battery serves solely to power the speakers. the carrying box separates into two sides, one of which becomes the iPad stand, while the other gets added behind it to provide stability and support that the stand definitely needs. when you’re done using the stand, the box snaps back together to hold the speakers and cables in two compartments, an efficient and practical design.

Some companies might have developed iDM15 to optionally operate fully in single speaker mode, but iHome went in a different direction. the right speaker contains most of the unit’s electronics, including iDM15’s battery and Bluetooth hardware, and you’ll need to use the white wire to connect the left speaker for stereo listening—a reason that this system can’t truly be called “wireless,” though it works flawlessly with multiple devices for Bluetooth audio streaming from 30-foot distances. It’s a little surprising that the microphone for iPhone speakerphone use is inside the powered right speaker, yet the microphone can only be used when both speakers are physically connected to one another.

There’s good and bad news to report on iDM15’s audio performance. Let’s start with the good news: iDM15 uses SRS TruBass to make the most of its small drivers, which sound markedly better in stereo streaming mode than BTS200—fuller, cleaner, and with less distortion, plus much more obviously stereophonic thanks to the ease of separating the speakers. While you’re not going to be blown away by how iDM15 sounds overall due to the limitations of small single-driver-per-channel audio solutions, it’s respectable given iDM15’s size and price: music doesn’t sound huge or rich enough to fill a small room, but there’s more than enough volume to be heard on a desktop, plus a little more detail and depth than in smaller units we’ve tested.

On the other hand, iDM15 is modestly outclassed as a speakerphone by BTS200. iHome touts iDM15 as having SoundClear Voice echo cancellation to improve its sound quality with monaural iPhone calls, and callers didn’t have a problem hearing us in speakerphone mode. But iHome actually disables the right speaker during phone calls, which leaves the microphone inside that housing to operate without competition—or the benefit of extra volume. consequently, the left speaker still operates, but iDM15 winds up sounding weaker than the BTS200, which has the edge on fullness and amplitude in speakerphone mode, offering both better speaker and microphone performance than iDM15. Callers could immediately tell the difference when hearing us talk through the microphones, and preferred the way we sounded with BTS200, though not by a wide margin.

While its performance in stereo and monaural modes was mixed, our overall impression of iDM15 is positive: this is a good compact Bluetooth speaker option, particularly for stereo streaming purposes, where it excels over even more expensive wireless rivals. iPad users in particular will appreciate the stand design and overall portability strategy chosen by iHome, which delivers superior sound quality for music—at a lower price—while only requiring a little additional space in a bag. on the other hand, iPhone users will need to consider whether Uniden’s superior speakerphone performance, smaller size, and included detachable battery/charging feature justify a slightly higher price. Both of these are good options, and worthy of our general recommendation; we’d give BTS200 a modest edge due to the extra value it includes for the price, but it’s hard to go wrong with either one.

Target, Radio Shack dropping prices on iPhones?

Both Target and Radio Shack are preparing to drop their prices on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS units, according to a pair of new reports. Citing a pair of “tipsters,” Engadget reports that Radio Shack is dropping its prices on the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 to $169.99 and $269.99, respectively, while pricing on the iPhone 3GS is said to fall to $19.99; all three offers would require a two-year contract. Phone Arena is reporting that Target stores will see even more substantial markdowns on the iPhone 4, with prices for 16GB units dropping to $149.99 and the 32GB Verizon iPhone 4 sliding $249.99, while the iPhone 3GS drops to $19.99 and the AT&T 32GB iPhone 4 stays at its current pricing. The report also states that Target will be offering a trade-in promotion through which customers can trade-in an iPhone 3GS and receive $100 off the cost of a new iPhone 4.

There’s Other Tablets? Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) shareholders are understandably nervous about the company’s second-quarter earnings report due at the end of Thursday’s trading day. Retailers like Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) are reporting that the company’s new TouchPad tablet computer has been a monumental failure since releasing in early July. Any other company looking to put a tablet on the market in the near future would do well to peruse a new study published by Milwaukee-based analysis company Robert W. Baird. After surveying more than 1,000 consumers, the Baird survey found that 50% of respondents already owned a tablet or planned on buying one soon, and 95% of them said the tablet they’re interested in is Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad. By comparison, 10% said they were interested in purchasing HP’s TouchPad and just 4% expressed interest in Research in Motion‘s (NASDAQ:RIMM) PlayBook.

4G After all? Apple is expected to show off two new iPhones at the end of September. one will be the new, high-end iPhone 5, and the other will be a smaller, cheaper iPhone model. both of these new phones, however, still will use the same 3G technology in the iPhone 4 that’s supported by Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T‘s (NYSE:T) largest networks rather than the growing 4G networks using Long-Term Evolution technology those telecoms have been building. At least, that’s what rumors have suggested. an anonymous source told Engadget on Tuesday that AT&T recently installed 4G equipment in a prominent Apple Store. the report showed a photograph of the equipment but later was removed at the request of the source. More interesting is that the equipment used the 700MHz and AWS bands — information that might be useless to the layman on its own, but enlightening when coupled with the fact these are the bands AT&T intends to use for its LTE network, provided its merger with T-Mobile USA is approved.

iPhone Maps Improved With Augmented Reality: a Thursday report at Apple Insider detailed a newly published Apple patent application titled “Augmented Reality Maps” that would bring interesting new functions to the iPhone’s Maps application. the new technology would use the same augmented reality technology used in other applications — data about physical objects in view of the iPhone’s camera is displayed over them on screen. this new technology would use the iPhone’s camera, GPS, compass and gyroscope in tandem to offer street name information and directions in real time based on what a person is looking at directly through their iPhone. iPhone 5 Case Prototypes Reveal Radical New Design – SlashGear

We’re getting closer and closer to the unveiling of the much hyped iPhone 5, which is rumored for a September launch. Now less than two months away, more leaks have cropped up on this next-gen iPhone that suggest a radical new design. just yesterday, leaked case design renderings showed up and now we’ve got photos of actual prototype silicone cases designed for the iPhone 5.

The prototype renderings come from a Chinese accessories manufacturer by way of European mobile accessories retailer MobileFun, and are allegedly based on leaked Foxconn intelligence. It reveals that the next-gen iPhone returns to the curved silhouette with a more ergonomic and tapered back cover that’s also overall much thinner.

There also appears to be a larger screen and a wider home button. This falls in line with previous rumors and a rendering by Thisismynext showing a teardrop-shaped profile with a broad gesture-based home button.
