Review: Motorola Triumph

The most powerful prepaid smartphone in America gets a full review. At twice the price of the LG Optimus V, is it worth the cost of admission? Read more to find out.

It’s pretty amazing that in the past three years how much the wireless landscape has really changed. When iPhone came out, it was $599, and people actually bought and used it as a prepaid phone at the same price that the postpay users bought into. Fast forward to today, and iPhone is now banned from prepaid, and its price has fallen to a maximum of $299.

Seeing a phone for the same price, that can rival iPhone feature-for-feature, and not have a contract attached to it, is what the Motorola Triumph was built to do.

When we unboxed this phone for the first time, we were generally impressed with its build quality. this does not appear to be a non-Motorola manufactured device. We already knew that it was ODM’ed by Huawei, as one of Motorola’s first Android ODM endeavors.

Motorola has been trying to make outsourcing manufacturing work for them for years now, and we can think of all the failures along the way. name one Motorola C-series phone that you actually enjoyed. no, we couldn’t either.

As such, there was quite a bit of apprehension about what would happen when we first powered on the apparently-outsourced Droid-alike Triumph. would it handle more like a Droid, or more like Motorola’s history of ODM failures…

Thankfully, it handles more like a Droid, a lot more.

Unlike the LG Optimus V, we were able to install our usual payload of apps without running out of in-phone storage. We had a similar woe on the other Virgin Mobile Android phone, the Samsung Intercept. the phone has an ample 2 GB of internal storage, so thankfully, storing apps that do not support App2SD are not an issue on this device.

Quickly, we realize where this device slotted into the Android ecosystem; a true cost-effective alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S. while it is a bit slower, it has a few more modern features like built-in HDMI output, and also does not get bogged down by a poor firmware implementation.

Unfortunately, this phone does not appear to be built off of any specific Droid firmware branch from our pokings-around. We suspect this is due to its ODM heritage.

While Virgin Mobile and PhoneNews.com probably will never see eye-to-eye on their anti-rooting policy (Virgin claims it is a violation of their terms of service, something we don’t see legally binding), the phone is indeed easy to root. One-click rooting exploits from other phones have already been ported over.

Unlike LG’s blunder, there is no easy one-touch option to enable Mobile Hotspot on the device… it is fully locked-down, unlike the Optimus V. So, while Optimus V gets to hotspot without the gray area, you’ll have to root the device to enjoy the same functionality on the Triumph.

Also equally mildly disappointing (and equally not unexpected), the battery life. it gets through the day, but power users will want to keep a portable charger around. the surprising bit for us is that the battery is indeed Motorola-manufacturered, and yet performs like what we would expect from an ODM product.

Thankfully, we do expect this phone to get some traction in the hacking community, it’s cheap enough to be useful for the elite phone community, and when combined with Google Voice, it can be used without changing your phone number. Considering the $35/month voice plan has only 300 minutes, this is actually an attractive option for falling back to other prepaid, voice only phones should you run out of minutes in a month.

And yes, Google Voice works well with this phone. in fact, you can finally make free VoIP calls using the many Google Voice SIP bridges that have emerged. the CPU is powerful enough, and battery long lasting enough, that we were able to carry out Google Voice phone calls without problem. It’s also a low-bandwidth task, so the 2.5 GB throttling threshold should not affect that (however, we were not able to test that scenario, yet…).

We’ll have camera photos up in a follow-up article, but what impressed us the most was the built-in LED flash. Finally, a good prepaid phone with a flash. And, it also works with Motorola’s on-Market Droid LED flashlight tool, so you can use it as a flashlight all the time as well.

In the end, we were left throughly impressed with the Motorola Triumph. the only features we found lacking were the lack of an extended battery accessory, and a poor performance by the front-facing camera. We really don’t see the front-facing camera as anything more than a novelty on this device, unfortunately… it was too grainy even in excellent lighting conditions.

However, all of that aside, this is now our prepaid phone of choice. while $299 in this economy is an extreme expense for many, this will now give you the capability to do just about anything an iPhone can do, and without selling your soul for a two-year contract.

It’s a great phone, and despite Virgin Mobile’s recent drawbacks on quality (and pricing) of service, it still makes for the best bang-for-your-buck solution out there.

Updated to correct a reference where we did not refer to the phone properly as the most powerful prepaid smartphone in America today.

20 Solar Apps for Your iPhone

The iPhone seems like the perfect accessory for a solar power enthusiast. Right now, you have to navigate a maze of websites such as PV Watts to calculate how much energy you can expect to produce and how many years a solar array will take to pay itself off. The iPhone could cut to the chase. it even looks like a miniature solar panel. And indeed the App Store is filled with solar apps. What a shame that none of them quite measures up.

I downloaded and tried out 20 solar-related iOS apps—all I could find as of July 15th, apart from those that were restricted to customers of certain utilities, were geared toward professional solar installers, or were merely reference books without any ability to calculate. I don’t have an Android or WM7 phone and would love to hear by Twitter or email from users who have tried out solar apps for those devices.

The coolest apps make use of the iPhone’s GPS, compass, and tiltometer. You climb up to your roof and position the iPhone where you want your solar panel to be and these apps calculate how much power it’ll generate. None uses the iPhone’s camera or ambient light sensor to measure the intensity of sunlight directly; rather, they calculate it from your latitude, panel geometry, and, in a couple of cases, time of day.

For my panels, the tilt measurements ranged from 10 to 18 degrees and the azimuths from 144 to 186 degrees. for comparison, the N.J. state inspector who certified our array estimated a tilt of 10 degrees and an azimuth of 202 degrees—so the apps are close enough. by and large, they accurately predicted how much energy my array generates in a year.

Two of the best apps, Solar Checker and Photovoltaic, recalculate the annual energy output in real time as you move the phone, making it easy to experiment with different possible configurations. Their readings suggested that the optimal tilt for my location would be 33 degrees, which is close to the 38 degrees estimated by the industry-standard Solar Pathfinder software and the 34 degrees estimated by MACS Labs, a California-based energy consultancy.

Some of the apps include a rudimentary financial calculator. You enter the cost of your system and your utility’s electricity rate in order to calculate how long it’ll take to break even. I found that these estimates varied hugely. None of the apps can handle all the data that would go into a proper financial analysis. by the way, if you play with this feature, the electricity rate you enter should be the actual rate plus the value of any government incentive. for instance, those of us in N.J. get credits worth about $0.60 per kilowatt-hour.

For reasons known only to the developers, some of the apps work only in Europe. Because the sun doesn’t shine elsewhere, I guess. try to use them in the U.S. and you get an error message. how hard could it be to make an app that works anywhere? The mathematical formulas are universal and free online databases provide solar yield for anyplace in the world.

Let me start with the apps that measure your solar array parameters for you, listed from my favorite to least favorite:

Solar Checker, by inverter manufacturer SMA Solar Technology, was the best of the bunch. it estimates your annual and lifetime energy production and takes a stab at the rate of return on your investment. but it can be awkward to use. for instance, it makes you enter the total array area in square feet rather than the number of panels.

Solar Meter ($3) is good, too, although it lacks the ability to recalculate the annual energy output as you move the phone around. The app lets you specify your array size in terms of the number of modules and peak power output per module. a nice feature is a graph of the seasonal variation in energy production. a financial screen estimates the cost and payback period, and the values were broadly consistently with other analyses I’ve done for my system. The app’s main deficiency is that it doesn’t fill in data for the U.S.—the closest it could get was Kingston, Ontario.

Solar Friend, by panel manufacturer Bosch Solar Energy, forces you to select among three Bosch-branded modules—how tacky. it also assumes that all American utilities charge the same rate for electricity; there is no place to enter local information. it calculates the total lifetime energy output rather than the annual production, which makes it inconvenient to compare directly to your electric bill.

Photovoltaic, by French manufacturer and wholesaler Axus Technologie Solaire, displays a spiffy graph of predicted energy generation by month. Although it denominates your financial savings in euros, the currency is irrelevant; if you enter your electricity rate in dollars, you can interpret the output values as dollars. The app’s main failing is that, outside Europe, you need to enter the sun data for your location manually. The relevant preference is confusingly labeled "Solar Indicator (kWh/kWc)." it took me a while to figure out what this meant: kilowatt-hours of annual AC energy production per kilowatts of rated DC power output. for my location, this value is about 1,100. it equals the effective number of hours of full-on sunlight—for me, just over four hours per day times 365 days a year—times the AC-to-DC conversion efficiency, typically about 75%.

Solar Panel Advisor ($1), by San Diego-based engineering firm Microtrend, has a clunky interface, but provides a variety of data that other apps don’t—notably, the instantaneous power output at your location, given the time of day. It’s a handy way to see whether your solar array is working as advertised.

Evasol, by a French solar installer of the same name, insisted that I live in the French region of Ardèche and wouldn’t let me override or enter my own electricity rate. its measurements were imprecise: the best it could do was narrow my tilt to the range of 15 to 35 degrees.

iSolBuddy, by researchers at an engineering school in Lyon, and Solar Total, by the eponymous British solar installer, measured the tilt and azimuth, but failed to return location-specific data or let me enter it manually.

Vario Solar Calculator, by a German renewables installer, measured the tilt of my array, and that was all: no azimuth, no local data. Enel Solar Power, by an Italian solar installer, measured the GPS coordinates, but not the tilt or azimuth.

For completeness, let me mention several other apps that provide more limited functionality, again in rough order from my favorite to least favorite:

PV Test (free version), by Italian solar installer Aniketos, doesn’t measure your tilt or azimuth—you enter it manually—but, like Solar Panel Advisor, calculates what your instantaneous power output should be, given the time of day.

Solar Panel Installer ($5), by New Jersey Solar Consulting, has a beautiful, step-by-step interface to collect your geometry and budget data. it calculates how many panels you’ll need to produce a certain amount of energy annually. There’s a button on the last screen labeled “Financial Payback,” but, lamely, it doesn’t calculate anything. it just puts up some legalese informing you that your payback will depend on many factors blah blah.

PV Performance Calculator ($3), by a British solar wholesaler, lets you enter your system parameters and a variety of financial data, and it estimates your payback period. I found that the app greatly underestimated my system’s power output.

PV Solar Calculator ($3) let you enter your system size in terms of one parameter—either DC or AC power output, annual energy production, system cost, or surface area—and calculates the other parameters for you. I find the app significantly overestimated the power output of my array, which I attribute to various reasons: its database predicted too much sunlight at my location, it defaults to an AC/DC derating factor of 85% rather than a more realistic 75%, and it didn’t adjust for suboptimal panel orientation or tilt. The interface also leaves something to be desired. it forces you to enter the system cost even if the power output is all you want, and it doesn’t save your entries, so you lose them as soon as you return to the main screen.

Solar PV Payback calculates how long an array will take to pay itself off based on its size, installation cost, government rebates, and your electricity rate. The app makes you enter the number of hours of sunlight manually—no automatic lookup.

PVm3 calculates how many modules you’ll need to produce a given amount of power, given your location.

Solabacus ($1) asks for your location but doesn’t seem to do anything with it. You can enter your electric bill for a 12-month period, but the app doesn’t appear to do anything with this data, either. its most useful feature is a catalog of solar module specifications.

ElecCalc provides 10 simple utilities of use to electricians, including how many modules you’ll need to generate a certain amount of power. but it lacks even the rudimentary data lookup of other apps. You might as well just use the iPhone’s built-in calculator app.

PV Master (free version) began by querying a database for location data. And that’s as far as it ever got: the app was never able to reach the database. Based on this performance, I didn’t feel inclined to shell out $12 for the full version.

Photovoltaique (free version) started, promisingly, by looking up my location—and ended, disappointingly, by telling me the app wouldn’t work outside France.

Clearly, there’s an opportunity here for a developer to come in and do a solar app right.

Pantech Breeze III (AT&T)

Plenty of shoppers still want cell phone that are “just phones.” the Pantech Breeze III is aimed squarely at that group. the Pantech Breeze III looks very similar to the Breeze II (3.5 stars), but given the Breeze III’s mission, that’s probably a good thing. It’s still a solid choice if you don’t need much in the way of features, and want to avoid AT&T’s mandatory data plan charges.

Design, Call Quality, and Apps the Pantech Breeze III measures 3.9 by 2.0 by 0.7 inches (HWD) when closed, and weighs 3.6 ounces; it’s a tenth of an ounce heavier, but a tenth of an inch shorter than before. It’s available exclusively in dark grey plastic, with a silver finish inside. the external, passive matrix color display displays the time and call status, as well as the track name, artist, and time slider when listening to music. the 2.2-inch LCD has 240-by-320-pixel resolution; it’s as sharp and bright as before. this is the easiest-to-use phone on the market today; the oversized function keys, five-way control pad, and numeric keypad make it simple to dial phone numbers and get around the icon-based menus. There are still three programmable shortcut keys up on the lid, beneath the screen; this time around, they’re also larger and easier to press than before.

The Breeze III is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA 3.6 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi, meaning the Breeze III can hit 3G data networks here, but only 2G data networks overseas. Voice calls sounded good for the most part, with plenty of gain and a natural tone in the earpiece. Transmissions were a little computery sounding through the microphone, but my voice was intelligible the entire time. Reception was below average; signal strength was fairly weak compared to a nearby Samsung Infuse 4G ($199, 3.5 stars). Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars). Voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth; I couldn’t trigger it from the headset, but there’s a large voice command button that’s easy to find without looking. the speakerphone sounded clear, but distorted at the top volume setting, which wasn’t very loud. Battery life was fine at 5 hours and 7 minutes of talk time.

The list-based menu system is well laid out, and makes more sense than the typical flip phone. the sharp screen resolution and large fonts are a nod to folks with poor eyesight. You can also discard the lists in exchange for AT&T’s typical, bloatware-infested, icon menu. Unfortunately, you have to use the ugly icons to start the music player app. Opera Mini still powers the Web browser; both WAP and desktop HTML pages look good on this phone. There’s a pill reminder app to help with taking daily medications.

The TeleNav-powered AT&T Navigator offers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions for $9.99 per month or $2.99 per day, and there’s a 30-day free trial. Garmin’s My-Cast Weather delivers localized updates and severe weather alerts, but at $3.99 per month, it’s way too expensive when you can just hit the Weather Channel’s WAP page. AT&T’s OZ-powered instant messaging app works with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo, but not Google Talk; the carrier’s e-mail app works with all major Web services, but costs $5 per month. TeleNav GPS can be worth it if you don’t already have a device, because it’s good, but the rest of the bloatware is a waste of money, especially because Opera Mini does so well with Webmail and weather sites.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions last time around, we dinged the Breeze II for burying the microSD memory card slot underneath the battery; sadly, that hasn’t changed. at least the phone boots relatively quickly. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine, and there’s also 78MB of free internal storage.

Pantech has made the headphone jack part of the microUSB charger port. That means it’s tough to find third-party earbuds, and impossible to find ones that sound good; Pantech doesn’t include any in the box, either. Fortunately, there’s stereo Bluetooth; music tracks sounded clear and full through Samsung Modus HM6450 ($99, 4 stars) Bluetooth headphones. the music player app works fine and displays small album art thumbnails, but it’s a little confusing to navigate and takes a while to load. You can browse the Web while listening to music, but be prepared for occasional audio hiccups.

The 1.3-megapixel camera has no flash or auto-focus. Test photos had poor color vibrancy, blown out highlights, and some out-of-focus indoor shots. only outdoor photos looked good enough to keep. Recorded 320-by-240-pixels played evenly at 15 frames per second, but looked almost colorless. this is the same camera sensor as in the Breeze II, so I expected these results. but even on today’s low-end phones, you see plenty of 2- and 3-megapixel sensors that take better photos in testing.

So despite some minor issues, the Breeze III is still a good phone. It’s just beginning to feel more outdated as time goes on. I would have liked to see a better camera and less bloatware this time around. besides, AT&T has a packed lineup. at this point, the cell phone market is slowly dividing into two categories: low-end feature phones like the Breeze, and real smartphones. Midrange feature phones no longer make sense when you can squeeze into an Apple iPhone 3GS ($49, 4.5 stars) or Android-powered Samsung Captivate (4 stars) for $49.99 up front, with data plans starting at $15 per month. if you’re trying to avoid data usage, the Pantech Pursuit II ($49, 3 stars) is a good alternative; it adds a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard for messaging, although it’s larger and heavier.

Benchmarks Continuous talk time: 5 hours 7 minutes

Books & Media Move to the Clouds; Apple, Amazon, and Walmart Fight for Market Share

Books & Media Move to the Clouds; Apple, Amazon, and Walmart Fight for Market Share by Nancy K. Herther Posted on August 22, 2011 Click here for full-size imageClick here for full-size imageClick here for full-size imageClick here for full-size imageIn the past 2 weeks, we have seen major announcements from Walmart and Amazon targeted at opening up the market for ebooks and mobile apps from the control of mobile device manufacturers, especially Apple. these events and actions have the potential to change the current distribution systems dramatically for both apps and ebooks.

Apple has established a distribution system for Apple iOS-platform apps that actively filters all developer app submissions, selecting the ones it wishes to sponsor on its site. It only sells those programs that work under the Apple iOS format (iPhone, iPod and iPad), freezing out anyone who doesn’t have an Apple device. other mobile device makers have similar systems for the sales and distribution of apps and content for their systems. Apple, however, adds another layer, which is at the heart of the current controversy.

If selected by Apple, app developers or content owners are forced to pay what insiders call the “Apple Tax,” which requires that 30% of revenue from product sales, through either iTunes or Apple’s App Store, is given to Apple. with the exception of serials and subscriptions, Apple doesn’t allow for the sale of any digital content unless it is sold through their channels. This includes linking to outside vendors, such as Amazon’s Kindle store.

Given the slim profit margins that most publishers and software manufacturers operate with today, giving 30% to Apple has had a very devastating impact on companies and innovation in the industry. This has created major frustration and resentment in the industry, especially by retailers and developers who would like to see a more level playing field. the new cloud-based distribution systems from Amazon and Walmart aren’t the first volley in what appears to be an inevitable battle against what many consider to be Apple’s unfair monopoly.

Life in the Cloud

NDP Group recently released a survey by, finding that most people don’t have a strong understanding of cloud computing, despite the increasing dependence that everyone has on cloud-based information systems. according to the Apple Insider blog, 76% of respondents report using some type of cloud service; however, only 22% understood the concept of cloud computing.

Clearly, this is about to change. Recently, Apple announced its upcoming iCloud service to be released this fall. however, before this news had much time to sink in, Apple rivals Amazon, Walmart, and others announced their own cloud computing distribution systems, in a clear effort to wrest power and control of the markets for ebooks and other media from the Cupertino giant.

Amazon Moves Kindle to the Cloud

On Aug. 10, Amazon announced its Kindle Cloud Reader, which allows users to freely access the Kindle site that is built on the open HTML5 standard. Amazon’s new distribution system makes it even easier to browse, buy, and read books from your Kindle library—whether online or offline.

System features of the new Kindle Cloud Reader include the following:

  • Ability to see all of your library of titles from your browser or device, giving you easy, device-independent access to content
  • Embedding the Kindle Store, optimized for your web browser, to make shopping for new titles more transparent by shopping from the app itself
  • Serving iPad users with the Kindle Store for iPad, which has been built specifically for iPad’s touch interface
  • As you read some books, the user can choose to use it for offline reading
  • Using the features of HTML5, you are more easily able to receive software updates automatically without needing to download anything
  • You are able to customize page layout—font size, color of text and background and other features—to best meet your personal tastes
  • Readers can now easily view any notes, highlights, or bookmarks even if made on other Kindle apps or on Kindles
  • The system is able to synchronize exactly where you left off in your reading so you are able to pick up where you left off from any Kindle or free Kindle app

The new system was immediately available for users of Chrome, Safari on desktop, and Safari on iPad. Kindle Cloud Reader on the iPad has been optimized for the size and unique interface of the iPad. the service will soon be available on other web and mobile browsers as well, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, and BlackBerry PlayBook.

Amazon Kindle director, Dorothy Nicholls, noted in the Kindle Cloud Reader announcement that “we have written the application from the ground up in HTML5, so that customers can also access their content offline directly from their browser. the flexibility of HTML5 allows us to build one application that automatically adapts to the platform you’re using—from Chrome to iOS. To make it easy and seamless to discover new books, we’ve added an integrated, touch optimized store directly into Cloud Reader, allowing customers one click access to a vast selection of books.”

Using the new Kindle Cloud Reader, iPad users can now get to the Reader by just typing in the URL: amazon.com/cloudreader. Amazon’s new approach to content distribution allows users to access the systems from any browser that supports HTML5, just as they would access any other type of program or website.

Industry insiders continue to debate how this will play out in the marketplace: Will users want a more generic, browser-based interface or prefer to stay with app-based system that might provide features and presentation more consistent with their experience? the big news is that this is offering users choices—and represents a clear effort to topple Apple’s control of apps for the iOS platform.

The Battle Begins

On the same day that Amazon announced its Kindle Cloud Reader, Walmart announced that its VUDU digital movie service is also bypassing Apple’s gate-keeping. VUDU is now offering video-on-demand streaming services for the iPad from its own website, not through Apple. VUDU videos can be viewed on mobile devices, televisions, game consoles, and Blu-ray players. Walmart’s press release says that VUDU has now “optimized the navigation experience of VUDU.com to enable millions of iPad owners to rent or buy entertainment content and then stream it easily through any iPad browser.”

Edward Lichty, VUDU’s general manager noted that, “we’re committed to offering the VUDU experience on as many devices as possible so customers can shop for and access their favorite movies and TV shows however they want, whenever they want.” Dorothy Pomerantz of Forbes magazine notes that, “VUDU is in a good position to compete with Apple. Walmart does $3.5 billion a year in DVD business with the Hollywood studios.”

And, as Lichty admitted about the launch to Reuters in an interview, “the economic advantage of not having to pay Apple 30% was a factor.”

On another front, on Aug. 9, 2011, a class action suit was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco alleging that Apple and a group of major publishers—Hachette, Harper-Collins, Macmillan, Penguin, and Simon & Schuster—had been conspiring to set pricing. the complaint alleges that Amazon’s decision to price ebooks at $9.99 represented what publishers saw as a threat to their revenues. the publishers, then, worked with Apple, abandoning their traditional wholesale model, and adopted Apple’s iTunes ecosystem, following the January 2010 launch of Apple’s iPad.

Steve Berman, the attorney representing consumers in the suit, noted that the plaintiffs “intend to prove that Apple needed a way to neutralize Amazon’s Kindle before its popularity could challenge the upcoming introduction of the iPad, a device Apple intended to compete as an ereader.” the attorney’s press release goes on to contend that, “if Amazon defied the publishers and tried to sell ebooks below the publisher-set levels, the publishers would simply deny Amazon access to the title, the complaint details. the defendant publishers control 85% of the most popular fiction and non-fiction titles.”

Efforts to break Apple’s dominance and allow the market to fragment and develop more naturally due to market forces instead of monopolies, began with efforts by users to truly control their own mobile devices.

Jailbreaking Your Device

Those of you who have survived the various format battles of the past 30 years know that people want far more flexibility and freedom than is generally possible under proprietary systems. Just as hacking was developed to make software more accessible and interoperable on computers, the apps marketplace has developed into two classes: On-deck—approved to operate on the devices and their specific operating systems—and off-deck, software that is not approved by those companies (Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, BlackBerry OS, etc.) that “own” those operating systems. In order to make it possible to use apps that aren’t included in the official catalogs developed and promoted by mobile manufacturers, users have to make changes to the basic operating system of that mobile device.

It’s called jailbreaking and it’s hot. People develop “hacked” or modified versions of some proprietary mobile operating system that, once installed on your mobile, allows you to install applications from outside that device’s app store. Your device works just as it always has, but you have more flexibility and control over the games/programs/information that you want to be able to access.

Every time a new (especially Apple) cellphone is released, within months—if not days—someone has found a software path to jailbreak that phone. the original iPhone released in 2007 was jailbroken in 11 days; the iPhone 3GS released in 2009 was jailbroken in 2 weeks. the iPad 3G model released in April 2010 was jailbroken in just 2 days.

Is It Legal?

As a part of the 1998 DMCA law, the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress is required to determine, on request, if some technology (hardware, software, etc.) is covered by copyright extending to some particular function or use. In 2009, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) petitioned to have an exemption allowing for cell phone unlocking by owners of these devices. In a decision announced in July 2010, the Librarian of Congress released the ruling that: “Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.” the ruling doesn’t require that Apple and others unlock their systems, just that individual owners have the right to unlock their own devices and, by doing so, don’t violate copyright.

This effectively ends efforts by cellphone makers, Apple in particular, to sue individuals for breaking the protections built into their mobile devices. “now people can go ahead and fix their phones and jailbreak them so they can run all sorts of different applications,” notes EFF’s Corynne McSherry. “they can make full use of the phone they bought without some kind of legal liability hanging over their head.”

Responding to legal decisions and customer pressure, Apple began selling “unlocked” versions of their iPhone 4 in 2011. now, major retailers have begun to challenge Apple’s dominance in the content realm. It will be interesting to watch Apple’s response to these challenges.

Ebooks are clearly big Business Today

In recent data from the American Association of Publishers, ebook sales in the U.S. have grown 1274% in the past 3 years. “Ebooks have grown from 0.6% of the total Trade market share in 2008 to 6.4% in 2010. while that represents a small amount in the total market for formats, it translates to 1274.1% in publisher net sales revenue year-over-year with total net revenue for 2010 at $878 Million.”

Today, ebooks are hot and all media and distribution companies are working to stake their claims and protect their interests. the battles with Apple represent market fragmentation as ebooks enter the mainstream of consumer culture. as the market continues to evolve, there will be winners and losers—and it is likely that the future ebook distribution system will look very different from what we have today.

One apparent loser is Microsoft. This week, in announcing it was “closing the book” on its ebook efforts, Microsoft posted the notice that it is “discontinuing Microsoft Reader effective Aug. 30, 2012, which includes download access of the Microsoft Reader application from the Microsoft Reader website. however, customers may continue to use and access the Microsoft Reader application and any .lit materials on their PCs or devices after the discontinuation on Aug. 30, 2012. new content for purchase from retailers in the .lit format will be discontinued on Nov. 8, 2011.”

Amazon has a lot at stake with ebooks and the Kindle platform. Walmart is the world’s largest retailer. Could one expect ebook publishers and sellers to respect the Apple-imposed restrictions on content, distribution, and use of their cellphones for long? This industry is growing fast and offers major potential for publishing and information in the 21st century. these actions represent some of the first volleys in the battles for dominance and market leadership. We can expect to see more posturing, product announcements, legal wrangling and, hopefully, consumers will see better ebook/app products at competitive prices.

Apple prepping budget-friendly, 8GB iPhone 4?

Is another iPhone 4 model set to launch?

(Credit:Apple)

All the talk surrounding an imminentiPhone 5 hasn’t caused Apple to forget about theiPhone 4, a new report claims.

Citing anonymous sources, Reuters is reporting this morning that Apple is planning to launch an 8GB iPhone 4 model “within weeks.” according to the news service, Apple wants to offer the 8GB model to folks in emerging markets and those who want to get their hands on the latest device from the company at a more affordable price.

The exact price of the new model hasn’t been disclosed, but Reuters is reporting that it will be cheaper than the current models.

Apple launched its iPhone 4 in June 2010. The device was the first from the company to come with the Retina Display, delivering higher-quality visuals than iPhone owners had been accustomed to seeing. at launch, the company offered 16GB and 32GB models priced at $199 and $299 with a two-year agreement with AT&T. Earlier this year, Apple launched CDMA versions capable of running on Verizon Wireless’ network. It followed that up with the launch of a white version a couple months later.

All along, Apple has offered a cheaper iPhone for those on a budget: the iPhone 3GS. Priced at $99 last year and then slashed down to $49 earlier this year, the iPhone 4’s predecessor is designed to appeal to those looking to save a few bucks–a role the rumored 8GB iPhone 4 would ostensibly take on, as well.

Even with all those smartphones available now, much of the talk across the iPhone ecosystem has surrounded the long-awaited iPhone 5. In recent years, Apple has announced new versions of its iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. however, this year, the company didn’t do so, prompting some to wonder if it actually has a device planned for this year.

Rumors are cropping up on a nearly daily basis about the eventual launch of the iPhone 5. Some reports claim the device will launch in September, while others say Apple will wait until October to release its new smartphone. other reports even suggest that Apple won’t be offering an iPhone 5 this year, and instead will be delivering a new and improved version of the iPhone 4.

At this point, there’s no telling what Apple has planned.

But that hasn’t stopped Reuters’ sources from speculating. The news service said today that Apple is readying the new iPhone for a late-September launch. The device, a Reuters source claims, will come with a larger touch screen, improved antenna, and an 8-megapixel camera. Apple has requested production capacity of 45 million units, Reuters says.

Apple did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.
