How did Tesla solve the deadlock? For its basic battery cells, Tesla uses the so-called 18650 Li-ion cells employed in laptop batteries. this is how it is riding the high horse of the electronics’ industry battery needs. The intense competition in this huge market pushes price and energy density improvements at an annual rate of 8% each.

How can one power a full-size car with laptop batteries? This is the secret sauce of Tesla’s power train. Tesla assembles thousands of them in a liquid cooled (or heated, if needed) pack that globally improves on the characteristics of individual cells: controls thermal runaways, balances charging and electric load, seamlessly isolates failed cells and keeps all of them at an ideal temperature to improve their life cycle. this is no easy engineering feat.

What’s the result? a much cheaper and more reliable battery whose building blocks are already available on the market in very large quantities.

What are the main advantages and drawbacks of electric vehicles? One should be aware that in an electric vehicle (EV), price ratios are completely different from those of an internal combustion engine car (ICE). in an EV, the “gas tank” (battery) is very expensive but “fuel” (electricity) and the “engine” (motor) are comparatively dirt cheap. An EV has less than 10% moving parts compared to an ICE car and except for breaks and tires, there is basically no maintenance. breaks will last much longer on an EV, as the motor will be used to slow down most of the time and replenish the “tank” while doing so. with so few moving parts, the chance of failures decreases drastically.

From the consumer’s cost point of view, there are two very big unknowns that have to be addressed: how long the battery will last and how much it will cost to replace.

From an environmental point of view (I will not get into the political and security issues of oil dependence), electricity can be generated using a variety of sources. The mix of those sources can be altered several times during the life on an EV fleet as needed. One should be aware that an EV powered exclusively by coal-generated electricity (quite an unlikely situation) is considerably worse than a modern ICE car.

How cheap is Tesla’s battery? this information is not public. I will attempt to do some estimates using a 2009 DOE document (see page 16) and a 2011 investor presentation from Tesla (see page 8).

First, let’s recall that the critical number here is $ / kWh of stored energy. this should not be confused with the price of the electricity you need to travel. this is about the capacity of the “gas tank”. a light car such as the Roadster can travel about four miles on 1 kWh of energy. Tesla’s sedan, the Model S, can travel about three miles with that energy. both figures are real world numbers with A/C and other accessories taken into account.

From the DOE document we get a price of $200-$250 / kWh of 18650 cells. this means $10,600-$13,250 in a 2009 Roadster (which has a battery that holds about 53 kWh). a liquid-cooled box with sensors and connectors (excluding the PEM) could amount to $3000-$6000 (one has to guess without reliable information). this gives us a best guess of $16,500 as the cost of the 53 kWh pack or $311 / kWh. From Tesla’s document, we infer that for the Model S, the cost would be reduced to 61% of that (42% / 69%, since the Roadster sport was a 2009 model), or $190 / kWh.

This is insanely low, considering that A123 Systems’ production cost is about $1000 / kWh, according to John Petersen. Even if the Roadster’s battery pack was $10,000 to produce, the worst case of DOE estimates and the previous calculations yield a cost of $268 / kWh for the Model S. Again, this is very low compared to the estimated $750 / kWh for the Nissan Leaf’s battery.

What about the product strategy? Here again, I see similarities between Tesla and Apple. both offer few but exquisite products. Their attention to detail is quite remarkable. Complexity is hidden behind an elegant and functional design. They expect customers to pay a premium for their products and plan to maintain healthy gross margins (Tesla estimates a 25% gross margin on the Model S; Apple has maintained a GM around 40% during the last several years). These practices are not standard in any industry, so both need their own chains of stores to be able to communicate directly to consumers and to offer a different experience. there is a reason why we do not like the usual PC or car salesman.

Both Apple and Tesla have strategies for the next five to ten years and are ready to sacrifice the current or the next quarter if needed to preserve them. Many companies’ good plans get stifled under Wall Street’s pressure to meet quarterly estimates.

How should the small investor approach TSLA? One does not have the resources to adopt the venture capital strategy of buying a few dozens stocks in a nascent industry. At the same time, a large slice of the portfolio should not be allocated to a potential ten-bagger as there is no safety net. in fact, some argue that TSLA is highly overvalued already. but the company is staying quiet and relentlessly advancing on its plans to deliver the Model S in about one year. there are no signs of the predicted delays or cost overruns for the Model S. Orders for the sedan (with a $5000 refundable deposit) are growing nicely, even without any marketing effort (which should change on October 1 when Tesla presents the beta version of the car to customers and to the media). Tesla’s next car, an SUV called the Model X, will be presented by the end of the year and should enter production by the end of 2013.

Stock price forecast. while it’s too early to do explicit earnings estimates, I think TSLA has a reasonable chance of growing 3-5x during the next three years (Tesla announced that it plans to introduce a new car every year). If Tesla follows through on its long-term plan to produce 400,000 cars per year at its factory (ex-NUMMI), including a mass-market model priced around $30,000, the stock could easily become a 10-20x in five to eight years.

Stump Stand Review

With all of the accessories available for your iPad, Kindle, Nook, TouchPad, Xoom, or other tablets, it isn’t surprising that there are some great accessories and some not so good ones on the market.  Knowing which ones to consider for your own use can be a challenge at best, so I am always excited to review an accessory and share my thoughts on the ultimate question “Should I buy this accessory, or not?”.

Today’s review is for an accessory that I must admit that I was skeptical about, the Stump Stand, available for $24.95 from The Stump Store.  Why was I skeptical you ask?  I am skeptical by nature and when a company delivers an accessory for the tablet market I think to myself “here comes another accessory that I don’t need, but would love to have.”  usually, after buying an accessory for my tablet, an iPad 2, and using it for a few weeks, I am onto a new one – having forgotten about the last one that I have purchased with great intentions and expectations.  if you could see my accessory graveyard I think that you would understand – it is littered with accessories that I only used for a few weeks or a month and then forgot about, or worse yet, I bought the accessory only to find that it did not deliver as promised.  the Stump Stand is advertised by its creator as “the portable stand for your iPad” and after using the stand for the past week I have to admit that they did a good job creating a very functional and useful accessory.

The Stump Stand is one of the accessories that will not be finding its way into my accessory graveyard – it delivers where other accessories have failed.  it isn’t glamorous, nor does it need to be.  the Stump Stand unobtrusively sits on my desk, or by my bedside and holds my iPad 2 up for me to use and does so with aplomb.  it isn’t supposed to be flashy or sparkly to distract me from my work, it is supposed to be a desk accessory that provides functionality for my iPad 2, holding it upright and making it instantly available while I work.  I was surprised to find that I think the Stump Stand is cute and functional in a way that I think many other accessory vendors should consider taking note of as they build their accessories.  it feels simple, yet I know a good deal of thought went into designing and manufacturing the product.  the most simple products usually require the most thought to ensure that the initial idea is conveyed without additional layers of complexity.  one of the well thought out and simple yet useful design elements of the Stump Stand is a rounded cut out that makes selecting the Home button of the iPad 2 simple when in the vertical position.   the Stump Stand comes in a rainbow of colors and can even be customized with your company’s logo should you want to give them away to promote your company.

The Stump Stand will support any tablet or mobile phone with a width of less than .5 inches.  this is perfect for my iPad 2 as I can leave the cover on and it fits snuggly and securely in the Stump Stand.  the Stump Stand has .5″ notch cut into it with two different positions shaped into the notch on the accessory allowing for two different upright positions of my iPad 2.  as well, the Stump Stand has an angled flat surface with a design that I am assuming increasing adhesion so my tablet does not slide off.  in effect, there are three positions that the Stump Stand provides:

1)  Vertical with a slight angle

2)  Vertical with a more aggressive angle – this is my favorite so far at my desk as it is just the right angle for me to utilize my iPad 2, and

3)  Horizontal angled, or as the creator of the Stump Stand calls it, a “Ramp Position” as it resembles a ramp

When reviewing an accessory for the iPad or other tablet, I first considered the Apple provided accessories.  with the Stump stand it is easy to compare it with the $30 synthetic or $40 leather cover that everyone who has an iPad 2 has purchased.  it is sleek and functional as a cover, but in my experience the “stand” part of the cover could use some major reworking as the magnetic folding stand, while an engineering marvel, does not deliver in the real-world.  All too often falls off, leaving the iPad 2 flat on the desk, or on my bedside.  The Stump Stand delivers as advertised and is a welcome addition to support my iPad 2 on my desk.

The Stump Stand has a solid feel to it, and on the packaging the vendor challenges the market to “TOUCH ME” which is a clear message that the accessory is different.  it is soft to the touch, yet sturdy, made from a dense rubber compound.  Weighing in at 8.5 ounces the Stump Stand is sturdy on my desk, or any other flat surface that I put it on.  the Stump Stand holds my iPad 2 securely at the proper angle so I can easily access all of my Apps and information without having to move from my position, where I am also accessing a couple of laptop computers.  I could see the Stump Stand team adding an adventurer’s version of the Stump Stand based on the sand infused holders that have become a mainstay of the in-car GPS market.  this way the Stump Stand could work on non-flat surfaces as well as flat surfaces.

Back to the packaging for a moment – in my opinion, it is innovative – combining a cardboard backer with a notch cut out of it so it can be hung on a retailer’s display with a second notch cut out of both sides to support a rubber band that holds the product in place.  the cardboard backer is a combination advertisement and holding spot for the Stump Stand.  A custom imprinted rubber band holds the Stump Stand to the backer securely.  I can imagine seeing an end-cap in a retail outlet, such as Fry’s or Best buy with a rainbow of Stump Stands to attract the consumer.  Again, the simplest of designs usually require the most thought to execute and the team at Stump Stand delivered.  maybe the team should design packaging as well as tablet accessories?

I am not sure I would consider the Stump Stand a portable product that I would take on trips, as it adds a good deal of weight to my already heavy bag.  I would like to see a Stump Stand Mini for travel that cuts the weight down considerably as the iPad 2 cover is not very good for travel.  as stated before, the iPad 2 cover does not work as promised – great ideas and engineering, but poor execution, as the magnets are not strong enough to prevent my iPad 2 from toppling over, or it could just be that I am not very delicate when the plane is jumping up and down during turbulence.  I am going to take the Stump Stand on my next trip and see how it fares on the airplane and let you know.

I only had one other concern, besides the travel applicability of the accessory;  when using the Stump Stand with my iPad 2 it was challenging to use it in the vertical orientation with the power connector attached as the Stump Stand does not have the depth necessary to support the iPad 2 with its power connector in place without turning it upside down, putting the Home button at the top of the iPad 2.  this is not a major inconvenience for me as I usually use my iPad 2 in the horizontal orientation, but it would be nice to be able to should I want to do so.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Stump Stand for those that are looking for a great way to hold their tablet on their desk, bedside, or any other place they need to easily access their iPad 2.

Have Tech, Will Travel: 4 Great Gadgets for Travelers

Love it or hate it, it’s the last hurrah of summer vacation, which means you’re likely to be cramming yourself onto a plane or staring at an endless line of brake lights snaking into the distance. To ease your travel travails, here are a few gadgets and services to salve the pain.

Amazing Earphones

That baby wailing behind you needn’t disturb your flight. A good pair of earphones can block out much of the cacophony — so-called noise-isolating earphones — as well as create the illusion that you’re sitting in your living room listening to your home stereo.

An excellent choice are the Ultimate Ears 700 from Logitech. Many higher-priced, high-fidelity earphones can sound harsh playing digital music. The 700’s deliver solid separation of instruments and voices without coming across as too crisp. on the other hand, these earphones aren’t slouches, yielding tight bass notes and a warm midrange. even audiophiles should be happy with these $150 earbuds.

Global Phones

Ever tried to work on the road while the family is vacationing in, say, Canada? A friend of mine discovered after a week of relying on his smartphone that he had racked up a $1,700 bill. Granted, he was using it as a wireless Internet connection for his laptop, and to make conference calls back to the office and listen to hours of streaming music …

Still, you need to remain connected, whether you’re in Petawawa or Prague. For that you need a global phone — one that will operate on European networks — and a global plan. Recently, I tested a few phones while traveling and one of the most reliable proved to be the HTC HD7S on AT&T.

It uses Windows Phone 7 software (not the most popular choice these days), but it proved perfectly adequate, with all the free apps I needed. I even watched streaming movies on Netfix while in Europe.

AT&T says it will work — voice calls, text messaging, e-mail, and Internet — in over 200 countries around the world. Just make sure you get the right plan with roaming built-in. Voice roaming for discounted rates in foreign countries is an additional $5.99 a month and then $49.99 a month for 125 MB of Web traffic covering about 100 countries (so use free Wi-Fi where you can).

Beat the Traffic

Sure, you can use a smartphone for navigation, but for convenience and the latest smarts, a standalone portable navigation device is still better. Tom Tom’s GO 2535 M Live adds a new twist: honest to goodness real-time traffic reports.

Other such services gather data from a variety of sources, such as local DMVs and emergency first responders, but the information usually arrives too late to do you any good. Tom Tom’s $300 GO 2535 offers something new: live traffic information from other Tom Tom users on the road. The nav device has built-in two way communications, so that you can relay your progress and receive information about others on the road ahead of you.

Of course, the accuracy of the service depends on how many of your fellow Tom Tom owners are traveling the same route you are, but I’ve found it can save drivers a lot of aggravation. on one trip, it warned me about a tie-up and saved me 45-minutes on a 3-hour trip. It failed to warn me about sudden construction, though, so it’s not perfect — just better than any other such service I’ve found.

Plugging In

I shouldn’t have to remind you to bring chargers — in fact, bring an extra one. Go pack it now. You’re bound to leave one behind on your peregrinations, after all. But one place that’s still difficult to find an outlet is in the family sedan. Mom and dad have their phones, then there’s junior’s music player, the nav device — you get the picture.

An extra outlet can limit family squabbles. A good, and inexpensive solution is Belkin’s Dual Auto Charger for iPhone and iPod. Despite it’s name, the $30 gadget works with any device that charges using a USB cable. So you can charge a Bluetooth headset or Android phone. It plugs into a 12-volt outlet and then gives you two USB outlets: a “quick charge” and a slower trickle charge plug. all you have to do is remember to plug in.

Global Sources’ fall electronics shows to feature over 3,800 booths – up 15 percent from the fall 2010 events

Press Release Source: Global Sources on Monday August 15, 2011, 2:30 am EDT

HONG KONG, Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Exhibitor booths at Global Sources’ (NASDAQ:GSOL – News) electronics trade shows, scheduled to run Oct. 12-15 at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, have been sold out.  The co-located China Sourcing Fairs: Electronics & Components, Security Products, Solar & Energy Saving Products and Korea Sourcing Fair: Electronics & Components will feature over 3,800 booths, a 15 percent increase from last fall.

(Logo: photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20030303/LNM011LOGO-b )

“Our electronics shows continue to attract the world’s top buyers and this is driving demand for exhibitor space at our shows. this year, we sold out all booths two months ahead of the shows – which is earlier than any of our previous fall electronics events,” said Tommy Wong, President of Global Sources Exhibitions.

“The global consumer electronics sector is driven by rapid innovation. Consumers want the latest, greatest personal digital electronics, tablet computers, mobile phones, computer peripherals and accessories and this is a win-win-win for our buyers, suppliers and Global Sources.”

Sales generated from the electronics and information manufacturing industry in mainland China reached approximately US$428 billion in the first five months of 2011, representing a year-on-year growth of 21.6 percent, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Output of mobile phones and microcomputers increased by 15.8 percent and 23.9 percent, respectively, during the January-May period.

Specialized pavilions to showcase hottest electronics products

While the majority of exhibitors for the October 2011 event are from mainland China, buyers can also have the opportunity to see competitive electronics products from other production centers including Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, India, the Philippines, Australia and Italy.

Highlights of the upcoming China Sourcing Fair: Electronics & Components include the increasingly popular iProducts pavilion. Twice the size of last year, it will showcase the latest iPhone, iPad and iPod accessories.

Buyers can also find Asia’s largest in-car electronics and GPS pavilions and Hong Kong’s biggest telecom and computer pavilions. in response to the growing demand for mobile computing devices, this fall’s show will also feature larger pavilions for computer tablets and mobile device accessories.

Other product pavilions will showcase networking products, personal digital electronics, consumer electronics and accessories, home entertainment and equipment, electronic components, interconnection technology, power supplies, wireless products, bags and cases and mobile phones.

Global Sources’ second China Sourcing Fair: Solar & Energy Saving Products has also proven popular among buyers and suppliers, with booths up by 16 percent from the previous event.

Fruitful sourcing platforms for buyers

“Buyer participation at our electronics shows is in a vigorous upturn,” Wong said. “Attendance at the spring 2011 show reached 33,549 buyers, up 18.7 percent year-on-year. this increase is the result of a strengthening global economy and an increasing demand for the latest electronic gadgets and components.”

Attendance is likely to top this past spring’s highly successful China Sourcing Fairs. Buyers at the spring show included Auchan, Audiovox, Belkin, Brookstone, Clarion, Coles Group, Futuretronics, Johnson Electric, Lexibook, Li & Fung, Logitec, Monster, Office Depot, Sears, Target Australia, Targus, Thakral Corporation, ThreeSixty Sourcing, TUMI and Verbatim.

To boost sourcing productivity for buyers and exhibition investment for suppliers before, during and after the physical shows, the China Sourcing Fair series in Hong Kong this October will be complemented by respective online shows.

Buyers can find more information and pre-register to get free entry to the shows at chinasourcingfair.com .

Camera, battery and audio flex cable for iPhone 5 supposedly leaked – iPhone app article – Phil Hornshaw

Asian component makers are ramping-up to begin major manufacture of Apple’s iPhone 5 in the next few months. At least, that’s what we’re led to believe based on rumors about Apple’s plan to launch the new iPhone at the beginning of October.

With all the news flying around, components for the new device are supposedly starting to leak out of their respective factories. MacRumors has reportedly received a tip that supplier TVC Mall has just such a leak, posting pictures of several components purported to be part of the next iPhone handset that Apple plans to release.

MacRumors has photos of the components: a lithium-ion battery, a rear-facing camera and the headphone audio flex cable that are all supposedly part of the new device. By comparing the photos with those available from iFixit, the site has determined that the components aren’t the same as what are currently appearing in the iPhone 4, suggesting they do, in fact, belong to some new device, although the differences right now are obviously just superficial.

The question then becomes: what exactly are the components for? That’s a little tougher to say. for one thing, iFixIt has reported that it has managed to get hold of the rear-facing camera component that’s supposedly part of the next iPhone, and an analysis has shown the camera sensor in the new component is the same as that of the iPhone 4, and that makes the new camera 5 megapixels.

That’s at odds with some of the things we’ve been hearing about the supposed iPhone 5. for one, that device was supposed to be carrying an 8-megapixel camera, along with the A5 dual-core processor chip that Apple developed for the iPad 2. of course, the rumors of the better camera in the new iPhone could have been incorrect or exaggerated, but the disparity poses more questions than answers.

It’s possible the camera comes from the iPhone 4S, the working name for another possible iPhone being released this year. Rumors have also been circulating that Apple isn’t releasing a full new iPhone this year, but rather a more incremental update similar to the difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS. That device would carry some new hardware (namely, the A5 chip) but would be mostly iPhone 4, hence the similar camera.

We could also be seeing a part from yet another rumored handset – a cheaper version of the iPhone some have said the company is developing to be sold without carrier subsidies for the prepaid phone market.

So right now, unfortunately, there’s not a lot of new information, but the idea of components floating around could lead to more new information about the upcoming device as more media outlets get a chance to start analyzing them. We’ll keep an eye out for more information, so stay tuned.
