Sun care iPhone apps reviewed

In this day and age, it seems like you or someone you know has an iPhone. That little invention from Apple has spawned thousands of apps, many of which are forgettable and do little but waste your time. however, there are some with an emphasis on skincare (including Truth In Aging’s own app), we decided to take a look at some of the more promising downloadable applications that are meant to help you protect yourself from UV damage. These apps can be used all year round, yes, even in winter (sunlight can reflect off the snow and cause skin damage) and can be helpful in the right hands. But since you’re probably too busy playing Angry Birds on your smartphone, we’ve decided to weed through them and give you some background on some of the major ones.

Coppertone MyUV Alert: Not much going on here as it is more of a marketing stunt than anything useful. The only thing I can use from this one is the UV level (which is very nicely done from a graphic standpoint) and reapplication reminder which will make a noise when I need to reapply. however I have to work it out myself and that doesn’t seem very helpful; I could easily just use a kitchen timer instead of this reminder. Coppertone may be one of the best selling brands because of its commercial appeal but we don’t think much of it and the same can be said about this app.

EWG: I was excited to see an application from the EWG (Environmental Working Group) but then quickly disappointed when I realized that it didn’t do much. All it seems to do is give the ratings behind the best sunscreens, something that I can do on their site.  The point of an app is to go above and beyond what a site can do, it is supposed to add another dimension to the user experience. On the EWG app they do list ingredients to avoid but they don’t even say why, they need more information regarding chemicals and the effects on the body. if they spruced up this app a bit and made it more interactive, people might become more aware of what they’re putting on their skin.

Sun Alert: You have to pay for this one but it is probably worth it and if you aren’t willing to spend the cash, there is a free (also known as LITE) option with fewer features. It is beautifully designed with three options: Skin Type, SPF, and Environment. You start by picking your skin type (color) from a group of options. then move on to how much SPF you’re applying, and finally choose the environment you’re in. You can even choose if you’re at the beach with the umbrella or without one which is a super neat feature. Finally you hit start and it’ll let you know when you need to reapply. Simple and well thought out and a good way to finally know when you need to reapply.

UV Monitor: This one comes from Olay and it fails, miserably. first, it is only for people in Australia and new Zealand, which I can sort of understand. Australia has some strong UV rays due to it being right under a hole in the ozone. But then it only lets you choose set places on Australia and new Zeland, iPhones come with built in GPS so why not have a GPS tracking system which would allow people the chance to pinpoint their location more precisely instead of limiting users. like with Coppertone, this is more of a marketing tool as they spend more time trying to sell you Olay products than anything UV related.

My UV Alert: This one from La Roche Posay first asks you to choose your skin color then your skin type. They have the basics, from dry to acne prone. Finally, it lets you know when you’ll need skin protection. So if the UV outside goes above 4 (and that’s apparently my recommended protection level) my phone will let me know that its time to cover up with a notification. The app as a whole is beautifully made with more emphasis on advice and sun care and less on trying to sell me products.

Which leads me to my final point, none of these apps are complete as it seems like they are all missing something. From looking at them, your best bet is to first find a proper sunscreen using EWG, after that you can delete it as you’ll probably never use it again. Heck you don’t even need that, just see what we recommend here. and, excuse us for tooting our own horn, the Truth In Aging app has a whole section on sunscreen ingredients. next, download the Sun Alert and my UV Alert apps as they’ll make a good tag team. my UV Alert can be started and it’ll let you know when to cover up. then turn on Sun Alert and it will let you know when to reapply sunscreen with the built in timer. or if you have .99 cents, you can buy the full version of Sun Alert that also comes with added features that equate to what you’ll get from the tag team. The choice is yours, two free apps or one deluxe app for .99 cents.

The biggest downside however is that if you’re a mom trying to monitor kids at the beach, one might be in the sand and the other might be in the water, it would be too hard to monitor all of them and their skin care needs with these apps. and not everyone has an iPhone or is willing to deal with the constant updates, which is why there is something called my UV Sense, which you can expect a review of in the near future. Apple nabs more patents for multitouch, iWork

as the patent battles and bubbles continue to grow, Apple has secured the rights to several more patents of its own.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today published a series of 16 patents now owned by the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, according to Patently Apple.

Here’s a rundown on some of the patents that stand out and where we could see them implemented within the Apple empire:

Some of these have taken awhile to get approved. a few seem rather useless at this point (an iPhone 3G dock?), although they still prevent other companies from using elements of the technology for other devices down the line. we all know how popular that kind of lawsuit is.It’s questionable whether any of these will help Apple in any current legal battles over patents, but it could stave off some competition in the future.

Best Buy now offering iPhone 3GS free with contract, but is it worth it?

If this isn’t a clear sign that we’ll be seeing the new iPhone 5 in the coming weeks, we don’t know what could make it more evident. Best buy today began selling the Apple iPhone 3GS for zero dollars. That’s right, you can get an 8GB iPhone for free (with the standard 2-year contract, of course).

Back in January, Apple dropped the price to $49, but we haven’t seen the phone for free until now. The deal is only available at Best buy brick-and-mortar stores, so you’re going to have to leave the house to take advantage of it. we also don’t know exactly how many 3GS phones the company has in stock, so there’s a chance this model will be sold out by the time you get out of work and over to a local Best buy store.

Clearly, the 3GS is being “end-of-lifed,” which basically means that Apple wants to get rid of the old phones to make way for its new bouncing bundle of joy, the iPhone 5. It’s the old “out with the old, in with the new” all over again. true, if you’re dying to have an iPhone but can’t afford the $199 to $299 it’ll cost you for an iPhone 4 (and presumably the iPhone 5 will have the same list price) with a new 2-year contract, the free iPhone 3GS may be the way to go for you.

However, in our opinion, the iPhone 3GS, which was released over two years ago, is really showing its age. The iPhone 3GS has a 480 x 320 resolution, just like the previous versions before it did. The iPhone 4 on the other hand has a 960 x 640 resolution, and the iPhone 5 is said to have a Retina Display as well. as for the processor in the iPhone 3GS, it has an 833 MHz CPU, whereas the iPhone 4 is a more recent 1GHz chip. Memory also doubled from 256 MB in the iPhone 3GS to 512 MB in the iPhone 4. The iPhone 3GS is missing the 3-axis gyroscope, dual-microphone noise suppression, and mircoSIM that the iPhone 4 has. as for the camera, the 3GS only has a 3-megapixel part, whereas the iPhone 4 offers a rear 5-megapixel camera and a front VGA camera. The iPhone 5 is said to have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.

As you can see, the 3GS is rather outdated, and most of the comparisons above were with the iPhone 4, which will soon be outdated as well when the iPhone 5 is released. If you’ve waited this long to get an iPhone, we suggest you just buckle up and get the iPhone 5. If you just want a free AT&T phone and you don’t really care much about having the latest technology, this may be just what your’e looking for.

iPhone or BlackBerry? Users state their pleasure

Our mobile devices work overtime for us. We need them for business, but we also use them for entertainment, and we want them to perform when we travel – to check out other flights when we’re delayed, then for a quick game of Angry Birds before boarding. Plus, they must be tough enough to survive constant use.

We asked seven people what makes them loyal – or in some cases, not so loyal – to a particular phone.

Kunal Gupta, CEO and co-founder of Polar Mobile, a fast-growing Toronto-based app developer:

Mr. Gupta uses both an iPhone and BlackBerry “all the time” and swears he can’t live without either. “BlackBerry is great for BBM [BlackBerry Messenger], and iPhone is a strong multi-purpose device that I often use when I’m in a new city,” says mr. Gupta. “The [BlackBerry] keyboard is important, as e-mail is how I communicate most often with customers and partners, but I often use my iPhone when I’m travelling, which is almost weekly.”

Brian Scudamore, founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, a Vancouver-based global junk-removal business:

Mr. Scudamore is a hands-down fan of his iPhone.

“I love my iPhone, Apple and what the company stands for – thinking outside the box for its customers,” says mr. Scudamore. “I FaceTime [live video chat] when I am on business trips and away from family, and my iPhone also helps me remain paperless.”

Lauren Friese, founder of TalentEgg.ca, a career website for 18- to 24-year-old students and recent graduates:

Ms. Friese likes her BlackBerry because it’s great for e-mail (her company runs almost completely online). All her documents are synced through Dropbox, and her e-mail is always available via Google Apps for Business.

“My BlackBerry is good at what it does, which is to help me stay connected to work and life no matter where I am,” says Ms. Friese. “I don’t use it for much else, perhaps became I’m not the type of person who likes to do everything on one device. I’m not a huge ‘app’ person.”

Bruce Kuwabara, Toronto architect and co-founder of Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB), and a design partner for Canada’s National Ballet School, the Gardiner Museum and TIFF Bell Lightbox:

Mr. Kuwabara is loyal to his BlackBerry but uses it in combination with an iPad.

“Together they give me the broadest spectrum of current technology,” he says. “Both are light and user friendly. the BlackBerry is great for quick, easy communication. the iPad replaces the laptop for looking at images, architectural drawings and presentations.”

Amber MacArthur, co-founder and vice-president of Toronto-based MGI Media, technology host and journalist:

A technology buff, Ms. MacArthur carries both a BlackBerry for business and an iPhone.

“I’m absolutely hooked on my BlackBerry for e-mail because I find it easier to type on a full keyboard,” says Ms. MacArthur. “A lot of my friends and colleagues are BBM or PIN [personal identification number] users, so RIM wins out there as well. However, when it comes to the app marketplace, I use my Apple device. There’s no better ecosystem for apps right now than iTunes.”

As a BlackBerry user for seven years, Ms. MacArthur also addressed the device’s privacy concerns.

“I often take advantage of BlackBerry’s BBM and PIN features,” says Ms. MacArthur. “While it’s true PIN-to-PIN messages are not encrypted, this won’t deter my usage. I try to keep all my messages, from PINs to e-mails, professional, because it’s increasingly easy for people to see electronic communications. If I need to have a private conversation, I still prefer to meet in person or pick up the good old telephone.”

Eric Latino, president and CEO of Global Emissions Systems inc. in Whitby, Ont., also a Pro-Modified racer and Canadian record holder:

Mr. Latino uses the BlackBerry for business but is frustrated that he had to replace his favourite BlackBerry 8830 World Edition with a BlackBerry Bold. That’s troublesome for him, because the keys are small and he’s got big hands, so he’s thinking of getting his 8830 fixed.

“I don’t like the new iPhones because I don’t like the touch screens,” says mr. Latino. “A BlackBerry reminds me of an actual laptop with the same key configuration. a lot of these smart phones only have 12 or 13 keys and you have to keep shifting over to get all of your symbols.”

Another thing he liked about his old BlackBerry was that it didn’t have a camera or video function. When he visits automotive factories he is often not allowed to bring in his new phone because it has a camera and video. “With my BlackBerry 8830, I could go anywhere,” he says. “Secrecy is a big part of research and development.”

Mat Wilcox, Toronto public relations guru and founder of the Wilcox Group:

Mat Wilcox has used a BlackBerry for 15 years, going through multiple models, mainly because she e-mails so much for business. She’s a huge fan of the keyboard and the way it types.

“I’m used to it so if somebody gives me a soft-touch screen, I can’t deal,” says Ms. Wilcox. “That said, BlackBerry is coming out with a new soft-touch screen so I’ll be able to do both. I’m pretty excited about it because I feel I’m going to get up to where everybody else on the planet is.”

She lists a few of the BlackBerry’s drawbacks: it’s slower, she can’t look at her photos as you would with an iPhone, and isn’t as much fun. nevertheless, she will stick to her Blackberry because it’s “way better” on the business side.

While she likes that BlackBerry is Canadian and “starting to become innovative,” she feels they’re missing the customer service link.

“People who are loyal to them are really loyal, but RIM doesn’t even know who they are,” says Ms. Wilcox. “They have these launch parties for new products and invite 20-year-olds. I mean … really? They’re not talking to their biggest customers.

“And when you’re on Twitter and e-mail BlackBerry, you get no response. If you e-mail Apple, you get a response.”
