iPhone Accessories to Take Your Phone Photography to New Levels

Apple iPhone 4 cameraApple’s smartphone darling–the iPhone 4–is fast becoming one of the most popular cameras in the world. This is due in part to the image quality of its camera and to the photo software available for it (including Instagram, a photo filter app that simplifies sharing your photos).

Not surprisingly, the iPhone 4 recently ranked as the most popular camera on photo-sharing site Flickr: iPhone users upload almost 80,000 pictures a day there.

If you want to take your iPhone photography as far as it can go, here are four interesting camera accessories that can assist you in getting there.

Android users suffering from lens envy have a few options of their own. One is the three-pack of specialty lenses from Photojojo, which the retailer promises will work with any camera phone.

Here are some accessories that work only with the iPhone.

Action Life Media’s OWLE BuboAction Life Media’s OWLE Bubo is a solid aluminum iPhone camera mount and stabilizer featuring a two-handed grip, interchangeable 37mm wide-angle macro lens, four tripod mount points, microphone, and accessory mount. the Bubo is available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS ($160), and for the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G ($170).

Kogeto’s Dot snap-on accessory lensTake 360-degree panoramic video with your iPhone 4 using Kogeto’s Dot snap-on accessory lens and Looker, a free companion application that should be available in the iTunes App Store any day now. Dot comes in black, green, pink, or red; it will start shipping in late September for $79.

The OlloclipThe Olloclip three-in-one camera lens for iPhone 4 features fish-eye, wide-angle, and macro lenses in one small package. the lens system clips snugly onto the side of your handset and is not compatible with protective cases or screen protectors. Olloclip comes in black or red for $70.

Photojojo’s SLR mountOnline photo accessory store, Photojojo offers two mounts that you can use to attach Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses to your iPhone 4. Photojojo warns that you may have to make several small adjustments to get the iPhone and your lens in sync when focusing on your subject. the SLR mount is available for $250.

BlackBerry Bold 9930 (Verizon Wireless)

Sadly, the BlackBerry Bold 9930 is the sweetest BlackBerry we’ve ever seen. I say “sadly” because it’s clear the Bold 9930’s time in the spotlight has already passed, even though it’s a brand new phone, and an obvious upgrade for anyone with an older Bold or Curve. it also offers the fastest processor RIM has ever deployed in a smartphone, plus a sharper touch screen and HD video recording. but its numerous software-related limitations mean the Bold 9930 is really only for the BlackBerry faithful. It’s not just about the world moving to full touch screen phones; plenty of folks prefer hardware keyboards, and not everyone loves big, hulking slider phones. Others swear by BlackBerry email, already have BES servers at work, and have IT departments well versed in deploying and managing these devices. instead, it’s about software; specifically, about the OS, and about apps: from shopping and buying them, to the user experience and features they deliver. It’s here that the BlackBerry Bold 9930 still fails miserably.

Design, Connectivity, and call Quality I’m getting ahead of myself, so first let’s look at the phone. Photos don’t do it justice. thin, sleek, and expensive-feeling, with an aluminum metal band around the sides, the Bold 9930 is a classy handset fit for an executive’s desk or boardroom table. it measures 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.4 inches and weighs 4.6 ounces. It’s slightly wider and thinner than earlier Bolds, which is a good thing, because it allows for a bigger screen: 2.8 inches, to be exact, with an ultra-sharp 640-by-480-pixel resolution. That’s still small, but enough resolution to make fonts almost as crisp as what you’d find on an iPhone 4’s Retina display. It’s also a glass capacitive touch screen, and includes RIM’s now-typical trackpad underneath. You can navigate this thing just about any way you want. (Unless you still want the wheel; sadly, I don’t think that’s ever coming back, for all you die-hards out there.)

The backlit QWERTY keyboard is just fabulous. the keys still aren’t separated like on a Curve.  but they’re even larger than before, and their well-tuned feel and response makes messaging about as close to a pleasure as it can be on a phone.

The Bold 9930 is a true world phone; it’s a dual-band EVDO Rev A (800/1900 MHz), quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and dual-band HSDPA (900/2100 MHz) device, meaning it can hit 3G data speeds both here and overseas with the right data plan. You also get 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz, and a/n Wi-Fi at 5GHz, which should fit perfectly into just about any existing corporate Wi-Fi network. the only thing missing is 4G; RIM has committed to developing 4G LTE devices, but so far the only noise we’ve heard about it is confined to the QNX-powered Playbook.

One place that the Bold 9930 isn’t a clear upgrade from earlier models is in call quality, which was mixed in my tests. Callers sounded clear and bright, but a little noisy in the earpiece; each syllable had a light wash of static behind it whenever the person spoke. Callers said my own voice had the same problem; in back-to-back comparisons with an iPhone 4, transmissions through the mic sounded a bit less clear and distinct. Reception was solid. Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era headset ($129, 4 stars), and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked perfectly over Bluetooth without training. the speakerphone was just okay; it sounded warm and was reasonably loud enough for outdoor use, but there was some distortion at the highest volume setting. Battery life was excellent at 7 hours and 26 minutes of talk time.

User Interface, Messaging, and Apps as you’ve probably heard, BlackBerry OS 7 is an evolutionary update; we won’t see real progress on this platform until QNX arrives. That means using the Bold 9930 is comforting in its familiarity, but also quite frustrating at times. A bar of icons across the bottom is actually the partially hidden main menu; swipe it up and you’ll see several rows of extra icons. You can also swipe to the left or right to see various groups of icons, such as Favorites or Frequent. Everything is smoothly animated and looks good, thanks to the new “Liquid Graphics” engine, and the voice-activated universal search is a welcome addition. but once you get down to business and begin changing settings or firing up apps, the UI itself is basically the same as before: you pop up menus, scroll to a particular choice, and select it, just like with every BlackBerry over the past decade. it seems RIM added even more pages of settings with even more fiddly submenus, this to an OS that had too many to begin with. during the review, I also agreed to more than half a dozen EULAs, each of which you must scroll all the way through before you’re allowed to accept it. (Tip: the spacebar speeds this process up somewhat.)

On the other hand, BlackBerrys rule as messaging devices. the Bold 9930 handle all kinds of business and personal e-mail accounts with aplomb, with one exception: Microsoft Exchange Server sync is problematic unless you have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server at your company. the Facebook and Twitter clients are quite usable, and you can set the Bold 9930 to deliver status updates to the universal inbox along with email and instant messages. Under the hood, things really cook; the CPU is a single-core, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. nearly every task I tried occurred almost instantaneously. (BlackBerry OS 7 can’t take advantage of dual-core processors anyway; anything faster would have been wasted.) the Bold 9930 also boasts an NFC chip, though I couldn’t find anything to test it with.

The new WebKit browser works just like you’d expect. It’s reasonably quick, it responds instantly to scrolling and pinch zoom gestures, and desktop HTML, WebKit, and WAP pages all look sharp and detailed. Finally, it’s the real deal. There’s no Flash support, and still no accelerometer, so you can’t tilt the phone to view a page lengthwise, but a 2.8-inch screen won’t match the 3.5 to 4.3-inch panels you’ll find on full touch screen phones anyway. but at least in other respects, the browser is now on par with the competition, if not superior in any way.

I wish I could say the same about BlackBerry App World, which is Research In Motion’s single biggest problem right now. It’s slow to load, difficult to browse, and full of mediocre apps that are generally clunky and not as powerful as their iOS and Android counterparts. nothing about BlackBerry OS 7 improves any of this. Don’t look for much in the way of more powerful apps for the Bold 9930, either. any developers considering taking advantage of its faster CPU and sharp touch screen will likely crunch the numbers and just hold out for QNX.

ICON HD and The NERD Review – SlashGear

Jawbone’s ICON was our consumer Bluetooth headset pick back in early 2010, but more than 18 months later it’s perhaps overdue a refresh. Along, then, comes the replacement, the Jawbone ICON HD and its new Bluetooth dongle accessory, the NERD. it might have a geeky name, but the promise is complete simplicity. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Hardware

Outwardly, there’s little to mark the difference between the 2010 ICON and the new ICON HD. It’s the same 44.1 x 18.25 x 25 mm and 8.2g chassis with textured fascia, a springy circular ear grip and a somewhat stubby aesthetic that stands a little further out from the head than we’d prefer, a look that’s over-emphasized by the short length.

Inside there’s Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with multipoint support for pairing with two devices simultaneously along with A2DP to handle stereo sound (albeit in mono). up to eight device pairings can be stored, and the quoted range is 10m; in reality we managed considerably more before static spoiled play.

What has changed is the HD audio support, with a 25-percent larger “wideband” speaker supporting 16kHz. with compatible services – such as Skype, YouTube or Pandora – it delivers crisper, fuller sound.

The NERD, meanwhile, is Jawbone’s oddly named USB Bluetooth dongle, a 2.1+EDR peripheral. Offering the same 10m range and eight device storage – though no multipoint – and is a reasonably compact 28mm long. Plug’n’play with your PC or Mac, it automatically picks between mono sound for VoIP and microphone applications, and 44.4kHz for music and PC streaming audio.

Performance and Battery

Setup is certainly straightforward: the ICON HD automatically pairs with the NERD, so getting it running on your PC or Mac is driver-free. It’s similarly simple with a phone, and if you’re using an iPhone or iPod touch you get a slick little icon in the status bar complete with battery meter.

Music sounds solid with HD audio sources, though obviously lacks the breadth of a proper stereo headset. Receive a call and it automatically switches over and into mono mode, then resumes when the call is over. NoiseAssassin v2.5 is onboard, Jawbone’s audio enhancement system, and it does a great job of cutting through background noise and pulling out speech in conversations without then over-processing music.

The MyTALK app is also supported, with a range of voice prompts in different languages along with control from your smartphone over which speed-dials are preset. there are also various DialApps, software loaded direct to the ICON HD and which can record voice memos, send SMS and emails by voice, or post to Twitter. Whether most users will actually take advantage of the extra functionality is uncertain, but Aliph has kept things updated. the existing ICON has seen eight software updates and fifteen new apps over the past year.

Battery life is quoted at 4.5hrs, less than some larger rivals but still enough for most people’s daily cellphone and VoIP call needs. A full recharge takes 90 minutes – you can either use the bundled AC adapter or the posable USB cable – but an 80-percent recharge takes 40 minutes.

Wrap-Up

The only change we’re not so keen on is the pricing. the original Jawbone ICON came in at $99, whereas the ICON HD + the NERD pairing is $139. right now, there don’t appear to be plans to sell the headset separately; although the Bluetooth dongle does make setup straightforward, we can see many people relying on the integrated Bluetooth in their laptop, or only intending to use the ICON HD with their phone.

We can’t fault the ICON HD’s audio quality, and as long as you aren’t looking for true stereo A2DP support it does a solid job with both voice calls and music. If you don’t have Bluetooth support in your computer, or find yourself not using a headset with it simply because of setup headaches, then the ICON HD + the NERD bundle shouldn’t disappoint. Those looking solely for a good Bluetooth headset, however, may find themselves spending extra on hardware they don’t actually need.

Technology News: Legal: Heeding the Lessons of SCO, or Not

We recently saw what is being described as the ending of the seven-year-old SCO contract and intellectual property dispute that dragged Linux through the mud before it propelled the open source OS into much broader enterprise use and credibility.

You’d think the lessons of SCO would be a shining example for technology companies of what not to do in order to maintain leadership and relevance. yet, today we see technology heavyweights such as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) repeating some of the same mistakes that led SCO to ridicule and then ruin.

Losing Strategy

Way back in 2003, SCO began asserting its rights of ownership and control over the Unix OS and also improper use of its IP in Linux. Along with SCO’s many assertions and suits, including those against Novell (Nasdaq: NOVL) and IBM (NYSE: IBM), came threats of lawsuits against large enterprise users of Linux. Then, in March 2004, SCO actually sued large Linux users DaimlerChrysler and AutoZone. those suits resulted in a summary judgment against SCO and a settlement, respectively, but they were momentous at the time, in that they represented SCO following through on its threats and actually suing Linux users. Similar to those cases, almost all of the courtroom decisions and outcomes have been against SCO, which subsequently declared bankruptcy.

When it began becoming apparent that SCO’s aggressive legal strategy was not succeeding and the company’s actual technology business had diminished along with the overall enterprise Unix market, the head of the Open Source Development Labs, at the time the organization where Linux was developed, credited the SCO suits for accelerating and driving enterprise use of Linux.

Given all of that history, it seems somewhat strange to see large, smart technology companies such as Microsoft, Oracle and Apple doing some of the same things SCO started nearly 10 years ago. I’ve written before about how the FUD around the Android mobile OS is reminiscent of the kind of skepticism Linux faced as it moved from hobbyist to geekdom to enterprise leader. Time will tell whether Android can emerge as well as Linux after SCO, but I’ll be watching the technology much closer than the litigation.

For its part, Microsoft was among the first to display a willingness to take a SCO-like path when in 2007 it asserted Linux infringed on its patents and IP. Microsoft’s infamous claim that Linux infringed on 235 of its unspecified patents may have served as the basis for some licensing deals, but it also fostered more skepticism of Microsoft among Linux and open source supporters.

This includes key communities that Microsoft now works hard to reach and support, including Linux distributions SLES, RHEL and CentOS and programming languages such as PHP. Though Microsoft has made clear that IP licensing is a significant part of its business, and the company has secured settlements and agreements with companies using Linux and more recently, Android, it does somewhat undermine Microsoft’s confidence in its own technology.

The fact that Microsoft is taking it a step further to sue Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) and Motorola over their use of Android highlights another SCO-like move that unwisely mixes legality with strategy.

In the case of Oracle, the company is suing Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) over its use of Java, which Oracle acquired with its purchase of Sun Microsystems, in Android. despite the fact that Java was being open sourced by Sun, Oracle claims Google needs a license for its implementation of Java in Android. that court case is ongoing, but I wonder whether Oracle may be severely limiting or diminishing Java in the mobile space by attacking Google.

Java, which is now challenged by many other languages and frameworks, particularly on the mobile side, may have actually been Oracle’s biggest opportunity in mobile software, but the company may be driving developers to other options with its legal actions.

Now let’s consider Apple, which despite its technological, innovative and market capabilities, is currently claiming patent and IP infringement by many others, including Motorola, HTC and Samsung. It is worth noting that at the time Android was first hitting the market in 2008, I wrote that we expected to see rapid development, involvement from many handset and wireless carriers, and a true challenge to Apple and its iPhone from Android.

We were told that Apple’s lead in handsets sold and in applications was practically insurmountable, and the standard response from Apple was that Android was not a competitive concern. It’s interesting to see now that Android is a major force in the market, there is all of this legal action against the software and its backers.

As Google initially focused on its technology, innovation, partners and building an ecosystem for Android, it seems it was largely ignoring the patent game, which can be equally unwise given the realities and rules of today’s market. that has now changed, as Google arms itself with additional patents through its Motorola acquisition and by facilitating patents for others to counterattack Apple.

SCO showed that convoluted contract, IP and other courtroom claims make for long, convoluted courtroom processes. Considering the SCO case in its totality, it seems the more the company relied on legal means to compete or limit other competitors, the further it strayed from users, consumers and its core business.

In the time that SCO made its sometimes odd claims and complex legal maneuvers, Linux was being pushed technically to better support clustering, scalability and virtualization — all things that have contributed to the dominance of Linux and open source in cloud computing and in HPC.

Microsoft, Oracle and Apple have a lot more technology and innovation capability and opportunity than SCO did, but I believe their focus on using IP claims and court filings competitively is a losing bet — and one that will leave them not necessarily devastated like SCO, but at a significant disadvantage in the long run.

Adobe brings Flash-free-Flash to Apple iPad, iPhone

By Jonny Evans

At long last Adobe Flash has come to an iPad or iPhone. at long last, Adobe finally seems to have got the idea in its long-running dispute with Apple [AAPL] over the once important media encoding technology. Flash will in future run on Apple devices — no Flash required, kinda.

[ABOVE: In case it might amuse, Conan O Brien’s take on the missing iPhone 5 debacle.]

Flash to iOS the best way possible

Adobe appeared at Europe’s NAB equivalent, IBC this week to introduce Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Adobe Flash Access 3.0. There’s a whole bunch of detail pertaining to these releases here, but how Adobe has delivered Flash support to iOS devices is absolutely the right way forward: it has enabled the server to stream a version of a Flash asset to an iPhone or iPad. Flash never needs to run on a mobile device again.

"With Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5, media publishers now have a single, simple workflow for delivering content using the same stream to Flash-enabled devices or to the Apple iPhone and iPad."

In other words, Adobe’s solution repackages content in real-time, changing the protocol to suit the target device, HTTP Dynamic Streaming or HLS, for example. this should mean that iOS devices will get much of the advantages of Flash video support, without the processor degradation and battery life cost of the format in use on other devices. Though we still have to wait a while longer until the "full Flash experience" of embedded ads and so on makes it to the new streamed system.

[ABOVE: Adobe also recently introduced Carousel, its free LIghtroom-based imaging app for iOS.

From the release:

Premium Video Streaming with Flash Media Server 4.5Flash Media Server 4.5 expands on its mobile delivery options with the addition of iOS support and enables content owners to create HTTP content on the fly to reduce costs brought on by device proliferation. new features of Flash Media Server 4.5:Delivery to iPad and iPhone enables businesses to use the same media and live streams to deliver full adaptive bit-rate experiences to platforms supporting Flash, as well as Apple devices, including iPad and iPhone.Integrated Content Protection simplifies deployment and reduces infrastructure cost, enabling seamless streaming for advertising-funded online video.On-demand Stream Packaging eliminates the need to prepare and protect assets ahead of time, reducing complexity and storage costs and simplifying publishing for businesses so they can use one set of source video to reach multiple downstream devices.

Offload the tasks

Essentially and sensibly, it seems Adobe now understands that developing Flash to work efficiently on mobile devices is incredibly challenging. this is driving Adobe toward a streaming future in which the hard work of decoding the data for different platforms is handled by the media server, not the device. I think this is an inevitable step.

That’s a direct reaction not just to the changing nature of the device ecosystem, but also to Apple’s determination that Flash not be supported on its devices. It also (I feel) leaves the gate open for Adobe to maintain relevance of its Flash standard even in a future of low power devices that rely entirely on cloud-based services for their media assets.

this is a better development target, I think, for a post-PC age. Flash on mobile devices — even Android devices — has a reputation for degrading processor power and/or sucking the last dying gasp of battery life. this won’t do in a mobile age.

The move to deliver a more intelligent way to support Flash publishers in getting content to iOS devices may also reflect some water under the bridge in the spat between the two firms.

[ABOVE: Many saw Final Cut Pro X as ‘iMovie Pro’.]

Will Adobe scoop-up Apple’s pro markets?

Many Mac users have voiced concern that with a move to favor iOS Apple has ceded some of its advantages in the pro markets. Final Cut X, for example, while exciting many with some of its new features, managed to damage its reputation in the pro video market.

This has generated better success for Adobe, which reported a 45 percent increase in demand for its video creation tools for Macs since Apple introduced Final Cut X. It will be interesting to see if Apple continues to cede its pro markets in favor of focused competitors such as Adobe.

The next Logic release will be a big test of Apple’s commitment to its pro markets.

Thoughts on Flash

In his much-cited ‘Thoughts on Flash’ note published last year, then Apple CEO, Steve Jobs challenged Adobe to get with the new post-PC times.

"New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind," he wrote.

Now it seems Adobe has at last taken up this challenge, though it continues to champion Flash. "Flash and HTML have lived together for the past 13 or 14 years quite happily and Flash has always been the tool designers have gone to when creating in the browser," said Adobe Asia-Pacific’s Paul Burnett.

"If we’re going to sit here for years with no additional new features in the browser or an updated standard, then Flash is going to be the tool of choice."

Brave words, despite which Adobe seems engaged on an attempt to refocus Flash primarily as a development environment rather than as a device-focused media player.

This attempt may succeed, enabling the firm to offer a solution with which to develop multimedia solutions for many different platforms and devices. And enabling iPad and iPhone users to access Flash content the best and most secure way I know — without using Flash.

NOTE: I’ve spotted a couple of comments on this, and it’s important to explain this: this does not mean Flash is directly supported on your device, just that the media server will be able to export Flash assets as an HTML5-supporting format, for example, so you should eventually be able to access such content, but only as publishers deploy the new Adobe software.

Philips unveils a trio of Android speaker docks

Tyler Lee 09/01/2011 05:11 PDT

There has always been a slew of speaker docks that have been created specifically for the iPod/iPhone in mind, and sure they support other devices but usually that involves plugging a cable into the other device’s headphone jack. considering how Android is currently dominating the smartphone platform marketshare, Philips has outed a trio of speaker docks that have been created specifically for Android devices in mind.

They should be able to work with just about any Android handset in the market today, and not to worry as the micro USB jack is able to be pulled out and rotated 360-degrees, which means by hook or crook it will eventually be able to hook up to your Android device.

Unfortunately it appears that the micro USB is used for charging the device, and if you wish to stream songs over the speakers, you’d have to pair it with your device via Bluetooth through a free app called Simply Share that Philips will offer for free upon the release of the speakers. The Philips AS851 will set you back €199, followed by the much smaller Philips AS351 that is priced around €129, and finally the Philips AS111.

Report: iPhone 5 Also Coming to T-Mobile?

Fresh off Tuesday’s market-moving rumors that Sprint will get the iPhone 5, a Wednesday blog report said that T-Mobile will also offer the next-generation iPhone.

MacTrast quotes an anonymous “informant” at T-Mobile saying the next-generation iPhone will operate on T-Mobile’s 3G network and could hit stores in early- to mid-October.

“We expect the addition of the iPhone, and the iPhone 5’s ability to run on our 3G network to make a significant financial difference for T-Mobile,” MacTrast’s alleged source said.

T-Mobile wasn’t available to comment at the time.

Rumors about both Sprint and T-Mobile getting the next iPhone have been circulating all year long, and came to a groundswell in March when iPhone veteran AT&T announced plans to acquire T-Mobile for $39 billion. but at the time, in an FAQ about the merger, T-Mobile completely avoided the yes-or-no question of whether or not it was getting the iPhone:

Q: Is T-Mobile USA getting the iPhone? A: T-Mobile USA remains an independent company, as the acquisition is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. We’ll continue to offer cutting-edge 4G devices like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, as well as the new Sidekick 4G, the T-Mobile G2x and the G-Slate tablet coming later this spring.”

T-Mobile, America’s fourth-largest carrier, currently boasts the exclusive title of supporting the most unlocked iPhones which is reportedly more than one million.
