Wireless Sync: The iOS 5-powered devices can now find iTunes on a Wi-Fi network and automatically sync and back up apps and contacts. Android users have been enjoying these privileges for long. with the help of third party apps, Android-powered phones can sync movies, music, bookmarks and contacts wirelessly between the phone/tablet and a PC/Mac.

Reminders: The iOS 5 has Reminders, a location-based organization tool that offers improved to-do lists that are compatible with Outlook, iCal and iCloud. on Android reminder is not required as there is full multitasking. Astrid or Taskos can take care of this sort of functionality by themselves. Android users are very familiar with location aware apps, which are available for free as they are ad based.

Cloud Sync: Cloud Syncing has been integral to Google’s computing for more than 10 years. Data in Google Apps are stored in the cloud and multiple users can access to the data without worrying about having the same operating system, browser and software. Apple’s iOS 5 has come up with iCloud to back up and sync data between iPhones, iPods and iPads and any other personal computer running Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows.

Widgets: Widgets have proved to be very useful in the Android devices, especially when you want a quick snapshot of information without having to open the apps on weather, news, stocks and similar services. the new iOS 5 Notification bar shows stocks and weather bars with live updating information.

OTA updates: Software updates in Android-run phones are delivered over the air and there is no need to be in proximity of a USB cable. Android has the option of accessing the SD card as a mass storage, so you can push files to your file system via Dropbox, Winamp and Awesome Drop. the new iOS version will finally push data over the cellular network without any need for iTune synchronization.

Twitter Integration: Apple had announced that it is bringing Twitter integration to all the iOS based devices and to many of its own apps, including Camera, Photos, Safari and Maps. in Android 2.0, Google added the ability for app developers to hook their apps into the Android sharing and contacts system and in Android any application can become part of the sharing menu.

Voice Control: Apple is rumored to integrate voice control with iOS 5. Android is known to have an advanced voice recognition integrated when it comes to mobile phones. Google envisions a future of accurate text-to-voice translations and is already testing out that functionality in the beta version of Google Translate.

Tabbed Browsing: The new tabbed browsing option in iPad to switch between WebPages is quiet similar to the “Private Browsing” option similar to Firefox and Incognito on Chrome.

10 Great iPhone Apps for Foodies

Don’t get me wrong: I hate my iPhone. I only got one after I accidentally left my Droid on a bus. so I’m not coming to you as a wide-eyed enthusiast, the sort who thinks everything that Apple makes is pure gold. I don’t play Angry Birds, I don’t have a set of bejeweled Hello Kitty cases, and every day I think wistfully of the BlackBerry I had a few phones ago. That said, there are some awesome apps on the iPhone, especially for gastronomes. In no particular order, here are 10 of my favorites.

Yelp there a million different sites and services that promise honest, crowd-sourced guidance to the baffling, brave new world of restaurants. Yelp is simply the best. the reviews are generally accurate and unbiased, and the app, like the site, features integrated maps and a linkable phone number you can click on to reach the place. as a food writer who travels a lot, I find it indispensable. and you will too. (See the top 50 iPhone apps of 2011.)

Seafood Watch this sleek, no-frills little app was created by the good people at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It tells you how sustainable different fish are, as well as what the best choice is for any given species (e.g., coho salmon vs. sockeye salmon vs. chinook salmon). this app, by the way, is only permissible to use if you don’t start showing everybody that you are using it.

Epicurious as with Yelp and restaurant reviews, there are a million recipe sites, but Epicurious is the best. All of its recipes have been vetted by pros, and even the not-so-good ones work. It gets bonus points for having a shopping-list applet as part of the package, demerits for too aggressive advertising. if you get fed up, try BigOven, which claims to have 170,000 recipes, with no frills — and no ads.

Jamie’s 20-Minute Meals Every food personality has his or her own app, and really, I just chose Jamie Oliver’s because I love the way he cooks. (Also, it works very well on the Droid — sigh.) But Mario Batali, Nigella Lawson and all the rest have put a lot of money and time into their own apps, and if you like them better, by all means download them. Better still, download all of them and compare their recipes on similar dishes. You’ll be surprised how much you learn.

The Perfect Egg Timer the cool thing about smart-phone apps is that there’s one for everything, and unlike dead-tree cookbooks, you can make room for as many as you want. Take the Perfect Egg Timer. It tells you how long it should take to boil an egg, to the second — depending on your elevation, the size of the egg and exactly how you like it, as represented by a precise closeup graphic. why something like this doesn’t exist for steaks and chops is beyond me. Maybe I will create one. But I know it won’t be this good. (Read about tips to take better food photos with your iPhone.)

Wine.com Wine apps, like wine directors and sommeliers, tend to have the same problem: they know too much and insist on sharing it all with you. if you want to know how the ’86 Lynch-Bages compares with the ’88, get the Wine Spectator vintage guide. if you want to know how a wine you see on a menu or in a store tastes like, or just a general guide to what to buy, this is the way to go. the intuitive interface helps those among us who are intimidated by wine jargon.

LocalEats there was a time when you had to depend on your “foodar” to find the best places in a small city — especially those odd little ones often presumed to be of little interest to out-of-towners. Chowhound and Google changed all that, and now there is a bustling commercial traffic in local-eats apps, some of which even include GPS guidance via Google Maps. LocalEats is stripped down and simple and easy to use, which is what I like in an app.

Broadcastr Restaurant guides, whether curated or crowd-sourced, suffer from essentially the same problem: a narrow mission and a binary hot-or-not model. Broadcastr is a social-media site for local stories; turned into an iPhone app, it provides cultural context from people who lives with and grew up around the nearby restaurants. which is helpful because maybe you would like to know more than just whether to go there and how to get there. a happy recent alliance with the Southern Foodways Alliance has given immeasurable richness to the experience, at least when you’re traveling in the South.

Locavore It’s one thing to be a locavore where you live; it’s another thing entirely to know what is in season in the places where you’re traveling. this handy, simple app is organized by region, and it helps you tell the difference between what you ought to be eating and what just came in on a diesel-flying fortress from Chile.

OpenTable the most amazing thing about OpenTable has always been that it works. there are still a few restaurants that don’t hook into the centralized-reservation software, but those that do have never lost my reservation or been confused about the number of seats in my party. the software team must work as hard as Apple because the app is even easier to use than the website, and also includes detailed restaurant information and a GPS locator. Used in conjunction with Yelp, no traveler should ever eat poorly again.

PhotoAppLink Ties iPhone Photo Apps Together, Makes Multi-App Editing Simple

Several iPhone app developers have teamed up to launch PhotoAppLink, a new open source initiative that aims to simplify photo editing by tying multiple photo-editing apps together.

As you know, there are an incredible number of photo editing apps in iTunes today, and often, each especially excels in one particular area. for example, converting photos to black and white, cropping, compositing or writing on top of photos are all features of popular standalone apps.

But what about when you want to make multiple edits using multiple apps? That’s a far more complicated process. and it’s the very problem PhotoAppLink aims to solve.

Currently, in order to edit your photo in multiple apps, you have to save the edited photo to the camera roll each time as you move in between applications. but with PhotoAppLink-enabled apps, you can simply select another app to use from within your current app. from the PhotoAppLink interface, you tap the app you want to move to and it’s launched for you, photo edits intact.

You can move back and forth between photo-editing apps, too, as you continue to work with your image.

In order for this feature to work, a group of photo app developers got together and agreed to implement PhotoAppLink within their apps. Originally conceived by app development shops PocketPixels and CodeCrop, the feature is now live in Snap!, Color Splash, Simply B&W, PicTools, AutoStitch, TrueHDR, Juxtaposer, Click! and Photogene.

Several notable developers have already committed to adding PhotoAppLink support in forthcoming updates, as well. Confirmed apps include: PaperCamera, PhotoToaster, ColorBlast!, Color Range and MobileMonet.

Other interested developers can choose to participate in the initiative  by grabbing the source library here on GitHub.

Besides making it easy on end users to hop between apps (certainly a pain point for photo enthusiasts), the new feature will have the added benefit of increasing the opportunities for discovery through other, compatible applications. To this end, PhotoAppLink also includes a commissions program for developers, which pays out a percentage of the sale for new apps discovered and purchased through the PhotoAppLink interface.

In addition to ease of use for end users and discovery for app developers, a third benefit is the feature’s potential for increasing user engagement within niche applications. for simplicity’s sake, users may have previously skipped using the better-functioning app in favor of a more basic “all-in-one” to avoid hassle. but by daisy-chaining apps together like this, it’s easier to use the best app for the job, while still saving time.

You can see all the supported apps where PhotoAppLink can be found on the project’s homepage here: photoapplink.com.

New technology cuts impressive dash

It’s already hard to remember what life was like before sat-nav came along.

London – It’s already hard to remember what life was like before sat-nav came along. Dog-eared atlases in every car glovebox. Gormless strangers shrugging their shoulders as you asked for directions. Illegible sketch maps that were supposed to get you to a friend’s party but didn’t, and map-reading arguments that tested the strongest marriages. It’s so much easier now – just punch in an address and away you go. That’s it.

It’s not all good news, of course. You don’t have to be a geography teacher to worry that if we stop looking at maps, we’ll lose our sense of place. then there are those sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic “sat-nav made me do it” disaster stories. Drivers of articulated lorries who ended up wedging their 44-tonners between ancient stone walls on narrow roads in pretty villages. Dim motorists who dutifully drove their cars into rivers because they didn’t have the gumption to take the instructions with a pinch of salt. If you’re wondering, women are more likely to obey sat-nav commands without question than men, according to a survey published recently by Swinton Insurance – although it’s not clear whether that makes them more susceptible to extreme “prat-nav” error.

Overall, though, sat-nav has been an overwhelming plus for drivers – and it’s constantly been getting better. as recently as 2005, car manufacturers such as BMW were still charging more than £1,000 (about R11 000) for factory-fitted units that didn’t even have a map display, but relied instead on arrow prompts and voice instructions.

Owners of expensive cars sometimes found they had to make a choice between using their sat-navs or listening to their favourite music, because their dash-mounted DVD drives could handle either a music CD or a disc containing navigation data, but not both at the same time. some of the clunkier built-in systems were rapidly swept away as sat-nav specialists such as TomTom, Garmin and Navman piled in with devices that cost a fraction of the price, for those who don’t mind sucker marks sullying their windscreens and cables cluttering dashboards.

There turned out to be rather a lot of those, so for a few years, sat-navs sold in huge numbers as every feature imaginable was added in order to fuel demand. Bluetooth and the ability to play MP3 files, live updates of traffic conditions and “points of interest” databases allowing you to find, say, your nearest supermarket or restaurant, were just a few examples. then market saturation and a weakening economy finally brought an end to the party. In the first quarter of 2009, TomTom sold 29 percent fewer units than it had in the first three months of 2008, a stunning reversal when set against the strong growth that had preceded it.

But it wasn’t just the market that turned against the specialised sat-nav makers – it was technology as well. It’s no coincidence that sat-nav burst onto the scene at about the same time as affordable mobile phones and the web. All were helped by common factors such as the advent of cheap computing power and the opening up to the civilian market of technology that had previously been the preserve of the US military. for several years, computers, sat-navs and mobiles lived separate lives – but then things started to change. first the dividing line between mobiles and internet-based computing blurred with smart-phones. then the boundaries between sat-navs and the rest started to crumble, a development that posed a challenge for the navigation companies.

Mobile handsets already contained a lot of computing power and location technology, so navigation aids were an obvious add-on. Take the mobile phone makers’ huge economies of scale and experience of designing desirable consumer electronics products as well, and you have a potent threat to TomTom and the rest. The navigation companies have tried to blunt that threat by themselves offering to provide the relevant technology on mobile handsets. Go to Apple’s App Store and you can download iPhone apps from Garmin, TomTom or Navigon providing UK coverage for forty or fifty pounds, prices that compare very favourably with even the cheapest standalone sat-navs. The bigger threat though, is from cheaper or free alternatives such as Google Maps Navigation for Android-based devices – although the cost of data downloads for phone-based navigation is a factor in this area, too.

That all leaves customers with a wide of choice of excellent navigation options – built-in systems, standalone after-market devices and phone-based solutions – all at much lower prices than the less capable equivalents of a few years ago. and we’re not finished yet; car manufacturers and sat-nav makers are finally getting together to combine the best features of easy-to-use but expensive and inflexible built-in sat navs, and the cheap, feature-rich but untidy, cable-trailing after-market units. The solution lies in well-designed dash-top brackets that allow drivers to use standard units without windscreen suckers and unsightly cables – Seat and Renault have led the way here. Mercedes has gone a step further by providing for Becker Traffic Pro sat-navs, which are considerably cheaper than the company’s own full-blown in-built systems, to use its’ cars’ large in-dash displays to show navigation maps.

But good as today’s systems are, there’s the prospect of something very much better. what if the sat-nav of the future, instead of directing you from A to B, could tell you everything about the buildings and natural landmarks you see along the way, identify the wild flowers on the roadside verges, or recommend the best restaurant you will pass between mid-day and 2pm, so that you know where to stop for lunch? If the technology that’s already starting to go into our cars – location technology, computing power, internet access and so on – can be combined in a sensible way, it’s all within our grasp. – The Independent

At What Age Should Jr. Get a Cell Phone

At what age did you or will you get your child a cellphone? As more and more kids carry phones, this question becomes important for parents. Should a child get a phone as soon as they want one? why would they need one? Are children safe with one, especially if it can access the Internet?

Verizon Wireless conducted a survey along with Parenting.com asking parents that question.

As a parent of two teenage boys the results were not that surprising to me. Nearly 40% of the 519 parents surveyed said they did, or will give, their child a cell phone between the ages of 13 and 15. another 32% said their child got one during ages 10-12. just over 10% got their child the first phone at 16 years or older, while just under 10% bought the first phone at age 7-9. only 7.5% of the parents never plan to get their child a phone with less than a percentage point of kids under 7 getting their first phone.

The following are the exact figures in descending order by age :

  • 16 or older = 10.2%
  • 13-15 = 39.7%
  • 10-12 = 32.1%
  • 7-9 = 9.9%
  • 6 and under = .7%
  • Never = 7.5%

I wish they had also asked what kind of phone they did, or would give, their children. When do you buy your child a smart phone, if at all? Should the child only get a feature phone? I’m guessing that most of these phones are not smartphones. like shoes and clothing brands set us apart when we were kids, the kind of phone a child carries affects his or her status among peers now. a few years ago having any phone at all meant you were someone. Today, a beat up old flip phone says you are the dork, while the cool kids carry the iPhone 4.

Aside from status symbol, cellphones also provide convenience to parents. I bought my boys cell phones when they starting playing school sports in middle school. It was so much easier to have them call me fifteen minutes before they arrived back at school after away soccer games or track meets than to have to wait at the school for the team bus, which was often late. It is also nice to be able to text them during the day to say I will be late or their mom will pick them up instead of me.

The two biggest issues I faced in making the decision were cost and safety. At first my boys were given very basic feature phones with the most limited contract available. Unfortunately, my oldest son blew away his text message allotment in about four days and I told him he could have an unlimited text plan if he paid for it. When he begged for an iPhone for Christmas, I gave in and bought him one not really thinking about the added expense of a data plan or the surprising expense when he went over his 200 MB/month allotment. once the oldest son had an iPhone the younger one felt slighted. So when he started playing soccer, I bought him as well, sending our AT&T bill into the stratosphere.

Before making the decision, do your homework and do the math. Factor in the cost of the phone itself, the contract (minutes, texting and data if you give them a smart phone), and the cost of accessories. My son cannot carry his iPhone without a case or it will be broken in a matter of days. He has a rugged case that stands up to punishment.

Consider safety, too. do you want your child to be able to access adult content on something as private as a smart phone? He or she will be able to if you get them a phone that can get online or receive pictures via text. Sadly, many kids are taking photos of themselves nude, or partially nude, and sending them to each other. Have a conversation with your child about this when you give them a phone. Make your expectations and values clear, and set boundaries with the consequences spelled out. Stick to them.

We have a rule that I can take either of my sons’ phones and look at the history in Safari anytime I want. If he does not agree to that rule, he doesn’t get a cell phone. Some might say that I don’t trust my son. they would be right. I don’t. because I used to be a teenage boy.

You have to decide what best works for your family. My oldest son didn’t like the rules at first, but he’s used to the idea now. I don’t check it nearly as much as I used to now that he’s 17 and I’m trying to provide him with more freedom. His 13 year-old brother gets his phone checked more often, but as he grows up I will relax it for him too.

My son can clear the browsing history, but I told him that if he does I will assume that it means he was hiding something and will take away his phone. Strict? you bet. but it works for us.

If you don’t want to check your child’s phone like I do, you can put parental blocks on their usage, but that adds cost to your monthly contract. with AT&T “Smart Limits for Wireless Parental Controls” adds $5/month to the bill. they let you control when your child can get online, what they can see, and who they can call. Contact your carrier to see what it takes and how much it costs. I chose not to pay the price and use spot checking to police their usage.

Finally, you have to decide if you want your child to have such a distracting piece of technology in school, church (if you attend one), or at night when he or she should be sleeping or doing homework. Our boys go to schools that have very strict no-tolerance policies about the use of a cell phones during class. they use their phones’ Bible apps at church, so I let them carry them there but made it clear that they are not to send text messages or play games. At night, they are required to plug the phone into a charger in my bedroom in order to keep from staying up all night texting with friends. we relax this rule on Fridays and during the summer.

Set the rules and stick to them. you have to decide what rules to have and how to enforce them. Cell phones represent a level of freedom and self-determination for a child. we promised our boys that we would never take away their cell phone as a punishment for anything other than breaking the rules of the phone. So, if they mouth off to me, I don’t take away the phone. I use another form of punishment. Unless they fail to plug the phone in at night, look at objectionable content on the Internet or use the phones at inappropriate times like during school, we don’t take it away.

Have an idea? Build an app

If you haven’t heard of a dap, then you need this app.

a dap, to the uninitiated, is a typical fist bump, that ubiquitous guy greeting. as a high school business teacher, Loganville resident Nick Johnson sees them constantly.

Which then set Johnson and his friend, former University of Georgia fullback Jeremy Thomas, to thinking: how many variations could they come up with for the traditional fist bump?

Close to 200, it turns out.

"We said, ‘Dude, you need to do an app for that,’ " Johnson said. the result is Dap App, an iPhone application that offers instructions on all the custom daps the friends put together. within days or weeks, Thomas will submit the app to Apple and await approval for the iTunes Store, a process that can take five to 20 days.

and while there is a free version of the app, it also comes with an enhanced paid version, which will hopefully set Johnson and Thomas off on a new entrepreneurial journey.

Whether or not it pays back their investment is yet to be seen.

Developing an app for use on a smartphone such as an iPhone or a Blackberry takes a mixture of marketing skills and technical know-how. With thousands of apps already available, you not only need to come up with an idea for something others will brag about to their friends, but you have to actually put it together.

"It’s hard — this is not casual, like somebody doing a Web page," said Clate Sanders, a lecturer with UGA’s New Media Institute who is leading a class this semester in which Grady College students develop an app. "It’s getting easier, but it’s not getting as easy as WordPress," a website-building tool that uses templates for Web pages.

Students in his class are using "widgets," or pre-built sections of programming, to build their app. But to build a fast, graphics-heavy smartphone app, the programming needs to be lean and fast, Sanders said, which is best achieved by a professional.

Jeremy Minnick, director of development at J House Media in Athens, said in addition to the phone-based apps, there are ones that start as an icon on your phone’s screen and then open a Web page rather than a miniature computer program.

"There are two different types of apps when you look at developing a mobile app," Minnick said.

"There’s the kind that’s developed specifically for your phone — iPhone, Android, Blackberry or whatever — and then there’s ones that are Web-based, and you install an icon (on the phone) and it opens a frame that’s a Web page. Those are the types of apps we develop because of the competition (among other apps)."

In other words, one app is just a drop in the bucket compared with the thousands already out there. among Apple devices alone there are 425,000 apps available, for free or a fee.

Still, according to Apple, there are more more than 200 million iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch users out there, and as of July they’ve downloaded more than 15 billion apps. many of these downloads are free, but some popular apps, according to Apple, can be downloaded as many as 10,000 times a day.

When it’s a 99-cent app, even after Apple’s 30-cent cut, that’s still some serious money for the app developer.

But before you start seeing dollar signs for your own app idea, Minnick advises you take a long, hard look at what you have in mind. Think about your audience and how you would market the app, he said, before you even start to think about how you’re going to develop it.

"It’s got to be something that has a lot of appeal," Minnick said. For the Dap App, "if you break it down by gender, you cut (your market) in half. and then, in the male demographic, you’re looking at ages 18-35."

That makes it harder to market, he said.

"I’m on the fence about it, but it’s a cute idea. I think for an app to have success, it either needs to have a crap ton of marketing, it needs to be bundled with an already popular service (such as anything made by Google), or it needs to be something that you look at and go, ‘I’m going to share that with my friend,’ " Minnick said.

While any business venture involving a smartphone application should be available on all platforms, Sanders said, Apple owns the tablet market, and an app developed for an iPhone or an iPod will work the same on each device.

That’s not the case for Android phones, which can vary by manufacturer. That means what controls the game, for example, on one phone might be different for another phone, requiring another set of programming skills.

"most (Android phone) manufacturers want to differentiate themselves, so if a developer that wants to develop a game, it’s hard for them to develop something that will play across all the devices," Sanders said. "Whereas something you develop for the iPhone, it will play the same way on every phone."

That said, Minnick acknowledged that an app made for, say, business clients might do well on multiple platforms, since it’s exploiting a certain portion of the smartphone market simply by its subject matter. For an entertainment app, such as the Dap App, it’s probably better suited for just the iPhone, since the phone and the platform lends itself more to games.

"I think iPhone users, they like the experience; it’s more important than (an app’s) functionality," Minnick said. "Apple was the first company to market themselves as a lifestyle choice. … so this is a unique-experience app."

around town, some organizations are experimenting with apps for various entertainment or educational purposes. the annual music festival AthFest debuted an iPhone app this past summer, and a couple University of Georgia departments have developed apps to help in the classroom. Turfgrass Weeds and Turfgrass Management, for example, are apps developed by College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences professor Patrick McCullough to help students identify grass pests and problems.

But Thomas and Johnson have big plans for Dap App. After investing $7,000 to get it developed, Johnson said he’s focusing solely on marketing and hopes they can serve as consultants or partners for others who want to develop an app.

"We are paying a guy to develop it. That’s where people get frustrated," he said. "We outsourced to India; (Jeremy) has a company he works with. the price is the one reason we went with it." the starting price to develop an app in the United States can run $20,000, he added.

as a business major at UGA who now teaches business to the next generation, Johnson’s already involved in helping students develop their ideas and market them. Earlier this year he got his own reference book on marketing apps, and he and Thomas have the website (thedapapp.com) and YouTube channel set up with dozens of hilarious videos showing their daps.

if the app is approved for sale in the Apple Store, the free version will have video tutorials featuring Johnson and Thomas and the daps they came up with. a paid version will give the user the ability to upload his own videos and share them within the Dap App community.

"this is definitely a business venture. … I have a few ideas right now and one is for a game, and I know for sure of another buddy who wants to run with us for an idea he’s been brainstorming and it’s a pretty good one," Johnson said.

"it takes a lot of time and research, and we’ve done a pretty good job of that with ours, I believe. so hopefully it’ll pay off in the end."

How can Apple improve the iPod Touch?

Apple's iPod Touch can't get much thinner. Is there still room for improvement?

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)

OK, let’s cut to the chase, folks. Apple’s rumored October event is around the corner, and we’re all expecting aniPhone 5 and a new crop of iPods, right?

Now, it’s no mistake that I gave iPods second billing in that sentence. TheiPod line doesn’t print money for Apple the way it once did, especially now that the iPad andiPhone have entered the spotlight. Still, the iPod Touch continues to sell well as the often overlooked third pillar of iOS.

Apple needs to do more to bolster its star iPod, but what more can it do to improve the iPod Touch and keep it selling in spite of the allure of its higher-profile siblings? So let’s put on the thinking cap, break out the crystal ball, and try to piece together the future for the iPod Touch.

Make it thinnerGadgets can never be too thin, right? this is especially true for any iPod, which must fight desperately for pocket real estate in today’s world of gigantic smartphones.

The problem is that its current 0.28-inch depth is already barely adequate for fitting today’s standard headphone minijack.

Apple could give it a wedge shape, like the Macbook Air, keeping ports on the fat end and thinning to a blade at the other. Or, it could go without the headphone jack altogether and create a boon for the Bluetooth headphone market.

Regardless, thinness alone is not going to make the iPod Touch a holiday must-have. Apple must have something else up its sleeve.

The headphone jack on the 2010 iPod Touch takes up nearly the entire width of the device.

Make it whiteI want to laugh, but sadly, this is probably true. Now that there’s a white iPad and a white iPhone, you can bet there will be a white iPod Touch. how about a gold one to mark the iPod’s 10-year anniversary? no? Too much? Yeah, probably.

Make it 3GI’ve been over this one before (exhaustively). An iPod Touch with the iPad’s no-contract 3G cellular service would shake up the mobile industry and give antisocial misfits like me a way to text, tweet, and e-mail without the whole awkward voice calling thing.

Unfortunately, there are reasons to believe a 3G iPod Touch won’t happen. For one, it would cannibalize iPhone sales. two, carriers might not support the device if it presents too much of a threat to their business. And finally, the 3G hardware would bloat the design and the price.

If there's a reason Apple is keeping the iPad's 3G capability out of the iPod Touch, it's just as much a political concern as a practical one.

Better camerasI really hope this one is true. The exceptional photo quality of the iPhone has always been part of the secret sauce that’s made it such a hit. Unfortunately, the iPod Touch uses an entirely different sensor and the results are less than spectacular.

Rumor had it that the iPod’s thinner design made it impossible to fit the iPhone 4’s camera sensor. Perhaps technology has advanced sufficiently enough over the past year to solve the problem.

Faster processorWhile we’re collecting all the low-hanging fruit, let’s assume Apple will upgrade the iPod’s processor to at least be on par with the iPad 2’s dual-core A5 chip. with any luck, more power will translate into faster performance, and smoother gaming.

Glasses-free 3D screenLord, let’s hope not. You’re better than that, Apple. Let’s not resort to gimmicks. Plus, remember that whole lawsuit about iPods making people deaf. Imagine the lawsuit in store for Apple when parents are convinced the iPod’s 3D screen is melting their kids’ eyeballs.

Price dropRight now, a $399 iPod Touch (64GB) is just $100 away from a 16GB iPad. That math seems off. make the base 8GB model $149 (kill off the Nano while you’re at it, or take it down to $99) and you’ll make Nintendo weep as kids unwrap their iPod Touch from Santa and pour money into your App Store and iTunes store.

Lose the dock connectionApple has already made it perfectly clear that the new version of iOS allows you to activate and sync devices without physically connecting to a computer. It calls the feature PC Free, and the icon shows a pair of scissors cutting away the dock cable. You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to put this one together.

The dock’s days are numbered.

Users can sync their media and contacts via iCloud, and continue to download new content through the mobile iTunes and App stores. You can stream content via Bluetooth or AirPlay. The world becomes wireless, and Apple gets to brag about pushing you into the future.

You still have the problem of charging, but I’m sure Apple could whip up some MagSafe style connection from its MacBook line or go with some newfangled inductive charging system.

What’s the payoff for Apple? Well, aside from preserving its legacy of pushing the envelope, it gets to extract one less component from the guts of the device, giving it room to make it thinner. Add this to the theory about it ditching the headphone jack and you could really start making an obscenely thin device.

Apple will also benefit from the flock of third-party accessory developers who will need to create new solutions for charging and streaming media from these connection-free devices. That means a lot of AirPlay licenses, as well as whatever proprietary charging standard it comes up with.

Bigger screenIf Apple really wants to differentiate the iPod Touch from the iPhone, why not give the thing a bigger screen? make it the Goldilocks device between the iPhone and the iPad.

A 5-inch screen like the Dell Streak’s would be really interesting. It’s still small enough to fit in your pocket, but the added screen real estate is a great match for games, video, and e-books (sorry, iBooks).

Final thoughtsSome of these ideas will undoubtedly filter into the iPod Touch we see next month. a few probably won’t emerge until next year, and some may never happen at all.

In my experience covering Apple announcements over the past four years, these things are always a mix of surprise and disappointment. Inevitably, Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other, always leaving you wanting more but still reaching for your wallet.

If Apple is in top form this fall, I suspect the new iPod Touch will be yet another beautiful, flawed, but nonetheless drool-worthy gadget for us all to rant and rave over for another year.

Apple Wins Injunction in Australia

Zacks Equity Research, On Monday August 29, 2011, 9:15 am EDT

Apple inc.(NasdaqGS: AAPL – News) has won another injunction against Samsung Electronics Co., which will delay the launch of the latter’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 until the end of September, in Australia.

Samsung had originally scheduled the launch of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia in the middle of September.

last month, Apple had sued Samsung in the Sydney Federal Court, accusing Samsung to have violated patent rights and alleged that the latter’s Galaxy 10.1 tab copied the iPad tablet in some respects. However, Samsung had argued that the Australian model of Galaxy 10.1 was different from its US models. Regardless, the court agreed on Apple’s request for the injunction and a hearing is scheduled on September 26 and September 29, 2011.

Apart from Australia, the two companies have locked horns in patent infringement cases in Germany, South Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Recently, Apple had won an injunction against Samsung Electronics Co., as a German court barred the latter from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 touchscreen tablets in the European Union. A German judge on Aug. 25 noted that Apple’s intellectual rights are probably strong enough to ban the sales of the 10.1 tablet in that country.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 was released earlier this summer and is touted to be one of Apple’s strongest competitors in the tablet market. The tablet uses Google inc.’s (NasdaqGS: GOOG – News) Android operating system. This compelled Apple to file the lawsuit in a bid to protect its intellectual property and claimed that Samsung copied the iPad tablet in some respects.

Earlier in April 2011, Apple had filed lawsuits in the California court against Samsung, claiming infringement of seven patents related to the Galaxy devices’ mechanism of interpreting user gestures, including selecting, scrolling, pinching and zooming. Apple also accused Samsung of copying three design patents, including the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad. The suit also covers the Epic 4G and the Nexus S products from Samsung.

Apple is facing tremendous competition in the tablet and smartphone markets from a number of companies, including Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG. Android, being an open source operating system, has helped Apple’s competitors create varied devices based on the free source code.

Apple’s primary smartphone and tablet markets are very crowded, with the likes of Research in Motion ltd. (NasdaqGS: RIMM – News), Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ – News), Dell inc. (NasdaqGS: DELL – News), Samsung, Cisco Systems inc. (NasdaqGS: CSCO – News), Toshiba and Acer gaining popularity in several international markets. However, Apple remains the leader by far in the tablet market to date and enjoys a very strong position in smartphones as well.

of course, impending lawsuits against several companies will remain an overhang on the stock going forward as the outcome remains uncertain. However, positives can be derived from the various lawsuits that it has won in the recent past.

Apple’s ability to spur the popularity of the products in developing nations, where it is less successful, will help dictate the company’s fortunes in future.

We maintain our Neutral rating over the long term (6-12 months). Currently, Apple has a Zacks #1 Rank, which implies a Strong buy rating in the near term.
