Arm Race: Your Wristwatch Is Your Next Web Portal

Investors, and a number of industry heavies, have just acquired the smartwatch business of Meta Watch, as well as all its IP. the players include Juho Pinomaa, the former president of Sunnto (which makes dive computers, smart sports, and GPS watches), formerly of Nokia, and bill Geiser and David Rosales, who used to lead the connected watch division of Fossil. the developer-centric Meta Watch is already due on sale this month, but these moves show that there’s serious interest in the future of the digital watch–and Meta is only one of the players. lest you doubt the seriousness of these moves, consider that one of the players involved is Apple.

Chances are, you don’t wear a watch and haven’t for quite some time. meanwhile, your smartphone is shoved into a pocket, briefcase, or purse right now, and all your SMS’s, phone calls, Twitter updates, and Facebook statuses are reeling on in the fabric-lined darkness. it would be amazingly handy (pun intended), in a world where more and more of us “check in” to places, snap photos, and share status feeds at an ever increasing pace, to have all that possible on your wrist.

Faced by shrinking sales of its traditional watches that really do little more than tell the time, Fossil began a project some time ago to develop a future connected watch–a digital device that would offer much more data to a tiny display. Meta Watch was the result, a mini computer, with Bluetooth and display, running a custom operating system. It’s now an independant entity, and it has an unusual remit: to appeal to developers and hardware hackers, to try to establish an ecosystem of apps and new ways of utilizing the display as an additional way to access what’s going on on your smartphone (mainly Android units, at first).

And Meta Watch isn’t alone. In Italy, two entrepreneurs are busy finalizing the design of the I’mWatch. It’s tiny, slim, highly styled (and highly expensive–in some jewel-encrusted iterations it costs around $15,000) and unlike the Meta it has a full-colour display and sophisticated touch interface enabled by its own on-board Android OS. It’s on pre-order starting at €250 now, and is due to make its first public appearance at the ARM tech conference in just 44 days. Though the company is cagey about what it can be used for, its promotional material shows calendar apps, weather feeds, MP3 players, news feeds, Facebook apps, and Twitter too–and it’ll come with a bunch of pre-loaded apps as well as extras via the proprietary “I’mStore.” Though it’s compatible with the iPhone, the I’mWatch seems to be a cleverer implementation of something Sony tried with its LiveView innovation for its own Android units.

These two devices are smart, sophisticated extra displays that run in addition to your smartphone and let you take some of the utility onto your wrist: they can buzz, for example, to let you know a call is coming in and prompting you to peep at the watch to see who’s calling–much easier than fishing a phone out of a pocket or bag–and if you were on a morning commute, you’d then perhaps decide to leave the call until later.

But don’t forget Apple–its touchscreen iPod Nano was an unexpected hit as a watch, spawning a large industry in peripheral watch straps. Apple seems to, at first, have not expected the Nano to be used in this way, and though it sported an attractive analog watch display, it wasn’t enabled to pop up when the iPod was prompted from sleep–it took an update to make this change. but the existing Nano doesn’t have any connectivity, and while it does run apps, they’re all proprietary and can’t be changed. We know Apple is planning an update to the device, possibly adding in a camera–but that’s all we know.

It’s possible Apple is planning something novel with the device to turn it into a full-fledged wrist computer, if not for this immediate update then for one in the near future. the first clue is the incorporation of Bluetooth 4.0 in newer Apple gear. the standard is a lower power consumption one than current Bluetooth hardware, thus improving battery life, and offers simpler “pairing” between devices–meaning it would be perfectly plausible for your iPhone or Mac to quickly, efficiently, and simply send data to your nearby Nano.

And with Apple’s control of the app ecosystem, a connected iPod Nano could become a powerful competitor to the I’mWatch and Meta Watch. You can easily imagine Apple building in a motion-gesture system to the device, meaning you’d simply have to shake your wrist to reject an incoming call on your iPhone. and though the prototype iPod Nano had a camera on the back, there’s not much to stop Apple adding it to the front or side of the device to act as a FaceTime camera or useful go-everywhere camera. with sophisticated voice recognition on the way for the iPhone, the tiny screen of a wrist Nano wouldn’t even be a barrier to updating your Twitter feed.

And that’s why you’ll buy another wristwatch. Smartphones are, of course, incredibly powerful tools. but as they get more powerful, many seem to be getting slightly larger–even the iPhone 5 is rumored to be bigger, if flatter.

The always-accessible nature of a smartwatch may appeal to a generation who’re used to “checking in” on Foursquare everywhere they go, as well as basic status reading and updating on Facebook. and all those rumors of NFC payments get even more interesting if you consider that you could actually pay by simply waving your wrist over a sensor pad, with all the NFC circuits in the watch and its wristband, and all the hardware handshaking–including store loyalty cards and in-store downloaded ads–happening on the phone, securely in your pocket.

Merely telling the time by glancing at your wrist? That time is over.

REVIEW: BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone stands up

RIM’s latest BlackBerry Bold 9900 heralds a new era for the famous BlackBerry: it is the first Bold to combine a touchscreen and a physical keyboard in a standard candy bar design. The Bold 9900 has a fantastic industrial design that feels superbly constructed, its keyboard is the best we’ve ever used on a smartphone, and its screen is vivid and bright. However, in the age of the iPhone, Android and even Windows Phone 7 smartphones, the Bold still offers little incentive to switch from rival platforms.

Check out our guide to the best BlackBerry smartphones on the market.

BlackBerry Bold 9900: Design and display

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is a superb piece of industrial design, and without doubt the best-looking BlackBerry ever released. The brushed metal edges scream premium, while the carbon fibre-like battery cover on the rear adds weight to the Bold’s great looks. The Bold 9900 measures just 10.5mm thick, making it the thinnest BlackBerry ever.

The top mounted lock button, and the volume controls and shortcut button on the right are perfectly positioned and click reassuringly when pressed. though it’s still very much a BlackBerry, we feel the Bold 9900’s styling should offer immense appeal to both corporate users, and regular consumers.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the first BlackBerry to combine a touchscreen and a full-sized physical keyboard while keeping the famous candy bar shape. It has a 2.8in capacitive touchscreen that is responsive to press. The screen itself is vivid, bright, and clear, but compared to its iPhone and Android rivals, the 2.8in display feels small and cramped. Below the screen sits answer and end call buttons, menu and back keys, and BlackBerry’s optical track pad. although this is a touchscreen smartphone, we still found ourselves making good use of the track pad for general navigation.

The best feature of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is its keyboard. It’s without a doubt the best keyboard on a smartphone we’ve ever reviewed. The keys are slightly wider than its predecessor, the Bold 9780, and more akin to the original Bold 9000 — a phone that was widely credited with the best keyboard ever tag when it was released. if your primary use of a smartphone is e-mail, the Bold 9900 is on its own planet when it comes to text input.

BlackBerry Bold 9900: Software

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 runs the latest BlackBerry 7 OS, which is a very minor upgrade from BlackBerry 7. The major new feature is the ability to separate corporate data from personal data using a function called BlackBerry Balance. It’s a nice addition, but unless you’re a corporate user its hardly worth getting excited about.

BlackBerry 7 looks remarkable similar to BlackBerry 6. The home screen remains attractive, and uses a handy notifications bar that drops down when you select it. this shows all your notifications including e-mail, calendar, text messages, and social network updates. The “Social Feeds” app aggregates feeds from Facebook, Twitter, RSS and BlackBerry Messenger among others. BlackBerry has spruced up the look of some of the icons in the menu, and the vivid screen does make them look rather attractive.

Next page: Software and conclusion

Applications on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 are stored in draws. Swiping across the screen access’ different draws; all of your applications (main menu), your favourite apps (user definable), media, downloads from BlackBerry App World, and frequently used applications. unfortunately, these drawers can’t be edited or modified, apart from choosing what to place in each one. you can choose not to display any of the draws in the settings menu if you wish, however.

Perhaps the biggest improvement in BlackBerry 7 is the Web browser. There’s still no Flash support, but load times have noticeably improved over previous models, pinch to zoom is effective despite the cramped display, and you can open Web pages in tabs then scroll through them by swiping across the display. Scrolling is also fluid and feels very natural: a far cry from the clunky feel of previous BlackBerry browsers. Despite all these improvements, the Web browsing experience remains inferior to most competitors.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 has an excellent universal search tool that’s now aided by the inclusion of voice search. Like all voice activated functions, its hit and miss but can be surprisingly accurate at times. It’s a little strange though that you have to tap the “done” button once you have finished speaking: we feel it should automatically begin searching.

Ultimately, despite the presence of a touchscreen, we still feel the Bold 9900’s interface is often confused between the old and the new. It’s clear this operating system has been built with a track pad and physical buttons in mind, and then tweaked to become compatible with a touchscreen, resulting in some rough edges. As an example, some icons and text on the screen are too small, making them hard to press with a fingertip, but easier to access with the use of the track pad.

Being a BlackBerry device, e-mail support is as strong as ever. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 supports email services through the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES). Microsoft Word and Excel documents can be edited and viewed thanks to the on-board Word to Go and Sheet to Go applications. In addition to 3G connectivity, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 has Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth capabilities. It also has near Field Communications (NFC) technology, but this is more for future proofing than anything else: there are no NFC payment systems currently active in Australia to make use of the technology. The Bold 9900 lacks HDMI-out connectivity.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 provides access to BlackBerry App World, RIM’s third-party app store. It doesn’t boast the same number of apps as Apple’s App Store or Google’s Android Market, but paid apps can be purchased in Australia (using PayPal) and most of the popular apps (such as Facebook, Twitter, eBay and Windows Live Messenger) are available.

The Bold 9900 is also a capable media player that features a refreshing interface, and the 5-megapixel camera also doubles as a video recorder. one real positive is the BlackBerry 9900’s battery life. It often lasted over two days during testing, placing it far ahead of most of its rivals and making it a handy device for road warriors.

IFA 2011: Hands on: Samsung Galaxy Note review

IFA 2011: Hands on: Samsung Galaxy Note review

Samsung has shown off the Galaxy Note at IFA 2011, a huge 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED handset which comes complete with a stylus called the S Pen.

We grabbed some time with it on the show floor just after Samsung’s press conference took place.

The Note has a 1.4GHz ARM-based dual-core processor inside, though we have to be honest and say that while some apps were snappy, there was a bit of lag when dropping into things like the web browser. that surprised us as we’d assume the units we saw on the stand were shipping models. And it’s doubly surprising given the Note’s speedy processor.

brightcove.createExperiences();

The 5.3-inch screen is WXGA resolution (1,280×800) and, as we’ve come to expect from Samsung’s OLED screens, everything is super bright and colours stand out brilliantly – even though it is the largest such display ever fitted to a mobile device. More on how video looks a bit later.

The cited 180 degree viewing angle is indeed in evidence – well, maybe not quite 180, but pretty darn close.

The Samsung Galaxy Note screen delivers 285ppi – the iPhone 4 delivers 326ppi according to Apple. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S2 delivers 218ppi, and the older Galaxy S 233ppi..

The Galaxy Note comes running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and boasts an 8MP camera with LED flash on the rear and a 2MP snapper up front (which you can see above). The Note can record full 1080p HD video as well as stills and is fast and responsive at taking snaps.

In the hand, the handset (if you can call it that) feels like a huge slab. But it really is thin, like the Galaxy S2 – though it’s slightly thicker at 9.65mm.

And there’s no getting away from the fact it looks really stupid when held up to your ear. just look at Samusng’s DJ Lee from the launch this morning for evidence.

Indeed, you can see just how large the handset is from our pics of the end of the Note below.

  • Check out Samsung Galaxy Note: what you need to know

As you can see, it really is a sizeable piece of kit – and no, we haven’t got micro-hands. The top has the predictable 3.5mm headphone jack.

…while the bottom includes a similar-looking hole for a stylus (more on that in a mo) as well as the charging port. despite the thickness, the battery is a 2,500mAh unit – that’s nearly twice as big as a typical smartphone battery pack. Quite incredible. Mind you, you’ll need a lot of power to drive that screen.

Rounding out the key stats, the device comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, and networking support includes HSPA+ for high-speed 3G and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. if you’re in the US, you’ll get 4G LTE support too.

The Samsung Galaxy Note includes a stylus called the S Pen. as we found out when having a play, it’s pressure-sensitive so you can write on the screen as well as launch apps, take photos and more. It’s like 1998 all over again. The Note also supports Samsung’s new ChatON communication service.

As you can see, it slots into the bottom of the device. having the stylus is a nice luxury, but with Android and TouchWiz being so good with touch, we’re not sure whether we’d actually use it that much.

Of course, Samsung hasn’t just launched the Note with Android 2.3. It also includes the latest version of TouchWiz – TouchWiz UX. The software can use cool gestures to activate certain features; for instance, swipe your palm across the screen and you can take a screengrab of whatever you’re looking at.

As you’d expect, there’s also Samsung’s social hub to integrate email, texts and contacts, while there’s also a calendar and task app called S Planner.

It also has a note app, called S Memo. Samsung reckons that we all still have to carry notepads with us, so it wants to alleviate that with the Note. as you can see, there are always plenty of shortcuts and some really great tips on using the S Pen.

Choose your note…

For multimedia the Galaxy Note is no slouch either and we were really impressed with the sound – the speaker is that pair of slots on the back of the device.

Music playback is quite impressive for such a small speaker…

..as is the sound for movies. actually, let’s look at video. Samsung says the device will support nearly every known media type: MP4, H.264, WMV, DivX and Xvid.

Here we’re choosing a video and turning on the auto-rotation so that it will appear in landscape.

Cleverly, you can hover your hand above a movie to pause it.

It’s a real shame you can’t see it here, but the colour of the video playback is excellent and – even though we’re watching high quality content here – playback is impressive.

The screen size is great for video. Where 4-inch displays can seem a little small, this really takes mobile phone video on a stage.

So the Galaxy Note then – would we buy one? The shame is that the Note will be expensive. It has to be, even with a contract. And we saw from the original Dell Streak (Streak 5) that there isn’t a huge thirst for devices like this. But with better mobile internet – the 4G model for the US market, for example – we can see a market there for a mobile video-centric device.

For the rest of us though, the Galaxy Note seems pretty overblown – unless you prize using your handset for media more than making calls. Because, let’s face it; you’d look stupid making calls on this.

iDetectives: family’s iPad chase for iPhone thieves

Tahira with her iPhone 4. Photo: Supplied

  • How to defeat the thieves after your iPad

The Donohoes had a bizarre run of bad luck recently when two of their family members’ iPhones were stolen just weeks apart.

Tahira, 13, had her iPhone stolen while at school last month. her mother, Fiona, had hers taken a couple of weeks earlier, when the family were on holiday at a Hilton hotel in Fiji in July.

Advertisement: story continues below

Hilton’s Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, where a hotel concierge stole Tahira’s mum’s iPhone.

But luckily for both of them they were able to recover their smartphones with the use of GPS tracking technology and one of the thieves’ lack of understanding of how an iPhone works. A Fiji hotel worker has been fired and jailed.

Tahira’s stolen iPhone involved an adventure. it was stolen while she was at school on August 3, the same day a hoax bomb was strapped to Madeleine Pulver in Mosman, Sydney, her father, Mark Donohoe, said.

“It was a funny day to do it,” Mr Donohoe, who lives in Mosman with his family, said of Tahira’s phone being stolen. “I’m glad we didn’t end up at Mosman police station [as] they might have been a little distracted I would guess.”

The stolen property report filed in Fiji.

Fiona’s iPhone turned out to have been stolen by a Hilton hotel concierge, who, as a result of Fairfax inquiries, has been dismissed and jailed for six months.

“The employee was terminated from employment at the Fiji Beach Resort and Spa and the matter handled by the local authorities,” Anne Marie Chua, spokeswoman for Hilton Worldwide, said.

Tahira made contact with her father about 2.30pm on the day, telling him her iPhone had been stolen. she wanted him to track it down using the find my iPhone software, which can be used to see remotely where an iPhone is on Google Maps, wipe it if need be, lock it and make it send out a loud pinging sound.

The software was installed on the phone as Mr Donohoe had an agreement with Tahira that she could have the iPhone as long as he knew where she was at all times using the software, which is free.

When Mr Donohoe opened the tracking software app on his iPad he saw the phone at a bus stop in Mosman and picked Tahira up from school and drove to it. “We were going to see if the girl that she thought [had taken the iPhone] was there,” he said. “[But] by the time we got there the bus had taken off.”

When looking at the iPad again, Mr Donohoe and his daughter saw that the location of the iPhone had moved. “It was an adventure because we were following along in the car and we had the iPad kind of following the position of the phone and it updates every, you know, 30 or 40 seconds or something like that.

“So we thought we knew the bus that we were following but we didn’t know much more besides that,” he said.

After following the bus from Mosman to Dee why, Mr Donohoe decided, upon seeking legal advice, that he would report the theft to Dee why police instead of continuing to chase the bus and thief.

He walked into Dee why police station, placed the iPad with the tracking software open on the counter, and said to the the police that he had a report of a robbery that was going on at that very moment.

“We said we’ve got this going on right now and they said [it was] fascinating and took the iPad and started watching and they realised it was in their area and where some of the policemen even lived.”

At various stages there were up to about five policeman surrounding the iPad, Mr Donohoe said. “But then they all dispersed and went into a [police] car and headed off to [find the iPhone].

“So one person stayed with their iPhone, looking at the iPad, giving directions to the others that went in the [police] car,” he said.

Upon reaching the latest position the iPhone was reporting, police asked Tahira for the name of the girl who she believed stole her phone. when a police officer yelled it out, the girl “started to run away”, Mr Donohoe said he was told by police while he waited at the station with the officer who was giving directions.

“The police ran after her and caught her and then they still couldn’t find the phone,” he said. “And [the policemen] said ‘can you do that ping thing that you said the phone can do?’ and so we set off the loud ping and at that stage it went off in the bottom of the bag and we found the phone and the girl ran off and he had to chase her again. it went rather oddly that way.”

It was a good thing that the iPhone tracking software was installed as the girl was due to move to another school the following day, Mr Donohoe said.

In a statement, NSW Police said the 13-year-old girl was arrested and taken to Dee why police station, where her mother was called.

“She admitted stealing the phone.”

“The victims indicated to police that they did not wish police to take any formal action against the girl, so she was issued a verbal warning in the presence of her mother and released.”

Now the only issue facing the family is what to do with the new phone they bought with insurance money to replace the iPhone that was stolen in Fiji.

The hotel employee was tracked down by accidentally synchronising all of their contacts with an online address book that Fiona had access to.

What I Really Want from iPhone 5

It’s that time of the year again.  Current iPhone stocks are low, iPhone prototypes are reported to be “accidentally” lost in pubs, and bits of news are trickling in on the new features of the upcoming iPhone.  the iPhone saga that has gripped the tech world continues and we all await the announcement of the next iPhone, sometime in October 2011.

There used to be a time when you looked forward to buying phones for their hardware or software enhancements.  I remember when the Nokia 6600 was launched with sporting a camera and colored screen and the ruckus it caused then.

Gone are those days of software feature hype for different phones, with iOS, we can be assured that the iPhone’s software features are mostly consistent and improved with almost every new update.  if you have an iPhone that’s 1-2 generations before the current one, it should work the same.

Personally, I am glad that I don’t need to learn a new OS whenever a new phone is out.  I am also spared the heartbreak of finding some of my much loved features missing in new phones (i.e. Nokia’s erratic OS)

So forgive me if I am not that thrilled with the new iPhone 5 as if the iPhone 4 was massively lacking in anything.  I am looking forward to see how our friends at Cupertino can surprise me further.

Here are some improvements I wish to see, and in my opinion, its these improvements that can determine if the iPhone can further their already massive market share.

The battery life of the iPhone has improved tremendously from version 1.  however – in an utopian iOS world – it should last more than the touted 5-8 hours of general usage.  I am not saying how much, but more would be nice.

They can do this by employing better technology or increasing the battery size.  both ways, it will compromise of cost and space.  Since a majority of the people already use some sort of alternate charger and won’t mind carrying a charger around, it may just be a good idea to allow a replaceable battery.

The iPhone is synonymous with dropped calls.  This could be due to the antennae technology or the way it’s built.  Much of this complaint is drowned out as the iPhone does so many other things well.  most people I know have 2 phones, 1 to make calls and an iPhone for everything else.

There is some Internet chatter that some new antennae technology is already being developed.  I hope that this will drastically improve the current way the iPhone makes and receives calls.

Design purist would vehemently disagree with changing the simplistic design of the well-crafted iPhone, but adding a tactile keyboard would probably make a bunch of Blackberry fans jump ship.  a lot of iPhone users I know talk about the typos they get using their on screen keyboard, having a tactile keyboard just make typing a whole lot easier.

Don’t get me wrong; the on-screen keyboard should stay.  We could have a flip out keyboard (Like the Nokia E7) so that we may have an option to use it.  This would only add a few millimeters to the form of the iPhone but make a world of a difference typing.

Already, there are already some Bluetooth Keyboard options out there, even an ingenious way to implement a Smartcover inspired keyboard onto the iPhone, maybe its time that Apple considers selling a keyboard version for enterprise users.

The iPhone has made things so much simpler, I am not just talking about 3rd party Apps.  Previously, you can’t do anything internet related on a Nokia without being asked for which access point to use while presenting you with a choice of access points you didn’t even know you had!

The iPhone’s iOS simplified all that by making the choices for all of us.  they put thought into designing their Operating System and its shows in their blazing rise to the top.  There are some detractors that want to make those choices and that’s led to a legion of Jailbroken phones.

I still believe that Apple has the tech and financial muscle to make all things possible by actively listening to their users and using innovation to lead the way.  Meanwhile, I am waiting in anticipation to see if the new iPhone will have any surprises installed.

Apple's iOS 5 beta 6 jailbroken

It shouldn’t come as a shock that iOS 5 beta 6 has succumbed to jailbreaking. but unlike the usual speedy jailbreak action we’re used to seeing (i.e. jailbreaks discovered within 24 hours), this one took nearly three days to figure out, which is a pretty slow turnaround for the hacking community. either way, the tools required to unlock iOS 5 beta 6 are now here.

Apple released the sixth beta of iOS 5 to developers on August 19, and it was initially reported that an earlier Redsn0w jailbreak method would work with the new beta. Unfortunately, the Redsn0w method didn’t quite work, as detailed by Redmond Pie.

Given Redsn0w’s problems with beta 6, hacker iH8Snow of alternative jailbreak tool Sn0wbreeze quickly set to work on a working jailbreak method — Sn0wbreeze version 2.8.

Sn0wbreeze 2.8 works on any iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, but only the first generation iPad can get in on the jailbreak action at the moment — sorry, iPad 2 owners.
