How To: Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone / iPod Touch Using Blackra1n
Warning: this method no longer works. to jailbreak the latest firmware, check out greenpois0n/limera1n/Pwnage Tool
George Hotz a.k.a GeoHot has released blackra1n RC3, which is an update to a 1-click jailbreak that adds activation options and an add-on blacksn0w, which unlocks latest iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS baseband version 05.11.07. to use blacksn0w, make sure you have this new baseband (check under Settings –> General –> About –> Modem Firmware) and if not, then update to a stock 3.1.2 firmware.
It is pretty easy to use and worked perfectly with my iPhone 3G. besides the tool, there’s a blackra1n application that gets automatically installed on the iPhone after jailbreak, which gives you option to install Cydia and some other alternatives like RockYourPhone and the ‘sn0w’ option to use blacksn0w unlock solution as well.
Please note that if you have an iPhone 2G, you can still jailbreak using blackra1n but blacksn0w will not unlock for you. you must use BootNeuter available in Cydia for that purpose. also, if you purchased an iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch (any capacity) in October or later, there is a high probability that you have a new model. Blackra1n currently performs only a tethered jailbreak for these new devices, which means you need to use blackra1n every time you boot the device, otherwise all your jailbreak data gets wiped.
Here’s see how it works.
Ingredients:
- An iPhone / iPod Touch (any model)
- Blackra1n tool available at blackra1n.com
- iTunes 9.0.2
- A wireless internet connection (to install cydia etc.)
Now, let’s get started with the procedure:
1. Download the blackra1n tool and double-click to open it.
2. Make sure your iPhone / iPod Touch is attached to the Mac / PC and click ‘make it ra1n’.
3. Blackra1n will tell you that the device is booting into Recovery Mode. Check the device’s screen and it should turn off and then show an iTunes logo with cable, indicating it is in Recovery Mode.
4. A few seconds later, you will get an image of GeoHot on your device’s screen. The Blackra1n program on your Mac / PC will request you to donate to GeoHot, click ‘OK’. now it will tell you to wait, till the device reboots. you can now close the program.
5. after the device reboots, make sure you have an active internet connection on it.
6. Navigate to the last page of the device’s springboard and open the blackra1n app.
7. now select any or all of the two installers and / or ‘sn0w’, if you want to unlock as well and tap on ‘install’ button in the navigation bar. It will now download the desired application(s) and if you chose ‘sn0w’, it will show a release log, tap close. It will then re-spring (refresh).
8. after the device re-springs, you will have the selected application(s) installed and will have an unlocked iPhone if you choose to. Congratulations! You’re now successfully jailbroken and / or unlocked.
Optional:
9. If you want to remove the blackra1n application from the device, open the application again and tap ‘Uninstall blackra1n’, this will NOT undo the jailbreak by any means. The device will now re-spring and you will no longer have the application.

Build a Solar Charger For iPhones In 30 Minutes : TreeHugger
This new Instructable is made specifically for those of us who want to charge our Apple gadgets, and it can be made for under $20 — and it can be done in as little as 30 minutes (or 60 if you’re less experienced with putting these little chargers together).
The parts include: Charging Circuit2x AA Battery Holder2x Rechargeable Batteries1N914 Blocking DiodeSolar Cell greater than 4VStranded WireTapeAnd of course, the trusty Altoids Tin that is the mark of all things small, gadgety and DIY.
You can get an entire kit of all these parts at BrownDogGadgets, Joshua’s website. It’s the quick and easy way to get everything you need if you don’t have parts laying around in the garage or workroom.
The steps are straightforward. First, you need to get the charging circuit right. Joshua notes, “Apple decided to have its newer iDevices not follow USB standards. When an iDevice is plugged in, it checks the data tabs on the USB to see what it’s plugged into. Depending on what it finds it sucks more or less power, which makes sense but is annoying because NOTHING ELSE DOES THIS. thus no charger out there has any power flowing to the data tabs. so the key is to find one that works for your newer iPod or iPhone. if you have an older iPod or iPhone when you don’t really need to worry all that much.”
After the charging circuit comes the batteries.
“We need to use rechargeable batteries for this project. I prefer NiMh AAs over everything else because they’re easy to find, cheap, and reliable. You probably even have a few at home. Since we’re using two AAs in this project our charger will have 2000 – 3000 mAh of current. You could even have two sets of AAs in parallel and boost that capacity to 4000 – 6000 mAh.”
And of course, we need the solar panel component. Joshua reminds us that while a bigger panel would give us more power, we’re limited in space since we want it to fit nicely inside an Altoids tin. There are 4V panels that fit perfectly in the tins (I’ve seen these for sale at Maker Faire and they’re perfect for these projects).
Joshua’s Instrucable gives the detailed step-by-step, but the short of it is first stripping the ends of your wires, and wrapping them around and soldering them to your solar cell:
Next comes wrapping the free ends of the positive and negative wires together, and soldering the wrapped wires to the circuite board (this is the trickiest part of the project):

With a hurricane approaching, there’s still time to prepare all of your electronics/gadgets/things-that-like-electricity-and-don’t-like-water for the possible coming deluge. Here are a few tips that any tech-savvy person should put into action.
If you have a landline, have a corded phone. Cordless phones rely on household power. Phones that aren’t cordless draw their power from the phone lines, so they may be operable even if everything else is dark. go out and buy the cheapest old-fashioned corded phone you can find and plug it in to a jack.
Charge everything. Now’s the time to make sure all batteries are topped off. If you have any extra batteries for certain devices, be sure to get them powered up as well. If you have an iPhone, which does not have a removable battery, you may want to check out Mophie’s products, which can add an external battery to your iPhone.
Fire up a month’s worth of data for your 3G iPad. If you have the 3G version of Apple’s tablet and are not currently using the cellular-data plan, you may want to pay for one month’s service, so that you have a computer that isn’t dependent on Wi-Fi, which will be out of commission in a blackout. AT&T sells a month of data starting at $15 for 250MB. If you have a Verizon iPad one month of data starts at $20 for 1 gigabyte.

Propellerhead Software, well known for its audio software like Rebirth, adds Wireless Sync-Start technology to the Rebirth app for iPhone and iPad. This technology allows two iOS apps on two different devices start simultaneously. This is a free update available to users of the app.
The WIST technology, developed by Korg, will let two performers, each with their own iOS device, play in sync with each other as they perform or record music from their iPad or iPhone. Or both! Users can also use ReBirth along with TableTop, iMS20, iElectribe and other compatible apps to create that masterpiece.
Once a musician enables WIST on one device to allow another to connect via Bluetooth, that specific iPad or iPhone will be treated as the Master for tempo and start=sync. the second device, then, will become the Slave to the Master devices settings. Sound a little Tron-ish? well, that’s just how they do it in the electronic music world, ok?
Rebirth itself emulates the three basic dance music devices – the Roland TB-303 Bass syth for that low down groove and the Roland TR-808 and 909 drum machines – to allow electronic musicians to lay down some tasty backbeats and bass lines. these can then be mixed and matched with effects units and pattern sequencers to create full on music tracks on the go. the effects include a Distortion Unit, Compressor, while the interface includes a Mixer with full automation support. in addition, mobile musicians using Rebirth can share the music (and the love!) with their Twitter and Facebook pals for complete fan service a la iOS.

Developer Achieves iPhone-to-iPhone Connection Over Bluetooth
iPhone developer Ralf Ackermann has achieved a working device-to-device Bluetooth solution, according to a report at ArsTechnica.
Building on work developed by Matthias Ringwald, who has put together a user space bluetooth stack, Ackerman has built external adapters that plug into the iPhone’s connector port, accessing the phone’s bluetooth stack in a way that could possibly even comply with the standard iPhone SDK, according to developer/blogger Erica Sadun.
With such capability developers could theoretically build games and utilities that allow phones to transfer data without having to be on the same WiFi network or connect to a server as an intermediary. Users could transfer photos, play chess against each other, shoot over a vcard, and more, using software that could be sold on App Store.
While the iPhone ships with Bluetooth capabilities, they are a limited subset of its normal features. you cannot, for example, connect your Mac to your iPhone and transfer data files.
Don’t hold your breath for Apple to take Ackerman’s lead in this arena, but this, as Sadun notes, is pretty big news and a great step forward for the effort to make iPhones communicate directly with each other.
