iPhone 5 cases continue to suggest larger, thinner design – SlashGear

New images of iPhone 5 cases have leaked and the designs continue to suggest that the next-gen iPhone will indeed sport a larger footprint while having a thinner profile with a curved back. However, recently leaked images of a prototype N94 that could be either the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, as Apple is rumored to possibly offer two handsets, have shown the next-gen design to look nearly unchanged. so which one is it?

Considering the abundance of iPhone 5 cases that show the “radical” new design and the investment that third-party manufacturers in China make to retrieve early details on next-gen devices to get a head start on production and sales and just all the insider rumblings that have been going around, we will place our bets on the case designs. these latest images from Macitynet.it show the next-gen iPhone design differences most clearly and dramatically. they also fall in line with the other silicone cases spotted in July.

The photos leaked of the iPhone prototype N94 shows a design that is identical to the current iPhone 4, but it’s not unheard of for Apple to encase next-gen components inside a current-gen case to keep the new design under wraps. they did that with the iPhone 4 hidden inside an iPhone 3GS case, so it’s certainly not out of the question that the prototype pictured was just a disguise.

Of course, all this is just conjecture and we’ll have to wait until either late September, or most likely early October to see the real deal. Rumors also continue to flip flop as to whether the iPhone 5 will be a world phone or a 4G LTE handset, since at the moment we can’t have it both ways.

10 Best video editing apps for the iPhone: iMovie, Viddy and iSupr8

There are all kinds of photo editing apps on the iTunes store, from a library full of run-of-the-mill retro filters that make your photos look like grainy keepsakes from the 70’s, through to those that stretch your face around and turn your surroundings into sketches, the choice is pretty endless.

But the iPhone 4 now brings us great quality video too, so where are all the VIDEO editing apps that can give us similar effects to some of our good ol’ photo favourites?

Over a year ago Anna wrote a list featuring five of her favourite video editing apps and she was pretty disappointed with the lack of choice.

Even a year on there still aren’t that many to shout about. Sure there are some good new additions, but I only really (luckily) found ten that I wanted to feature and three had already appeared in Anna’s list last year.

There are plenty of others that fullfil specific roles, like just adding music or making video slideshows out of the photos you already have, but really there’s very little choice when it comes to comprehensive video apps that let you edit video, add in and delete clips, make transitions, add filters AND share to your social networks all in one package.

Here’s our top ten featuring a few old and a few new, a few that are really comprehensive and a few that are clearly lacking in some areas but do bring something a bit different to the table:

Nintendo to Add Features, Target Women to Spur Sales of 3DS

September 13, 2011, 4:24 AM EDT

by Naoko Fujimura and Takashi Amano

(Updates with new software in ninth paragraph.)

Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) — Nintendo co., the world’s biggest maker of game players, will add functions to its 3DS and target women to spur demand, after sales of the device slumped and led the company to slash its profit forecast to a 26-year low.

The upgrades will include a feature to allow users to record movies in 3-D, President Satoru Iwata said at a briefing in Tokyo today. The Kyoto-based company also plans to unveil a pink version of the product next month to attract female customers and introduce a tennis game next year starring Nintendo’s flagship character Mario, he said.

The features may test Iwata’s ability to restore investor confidence in a stock that’s tumbled more than 80 percent since its 2007 high as users turn to Apple inc.’s iPhone and Facebook inc.’s online service to play games. Sales of the 3DS will probably miss Nintendo’s annual target this year even after prices were slashed by as much as 40 percent last month, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News.

“Today’s announcements were disappointing relative to what the market was hoping for,” said Mitsushige Akino, who oversees about $600 million in Tokyo at Ichiyoshi Investment Management co. “The new Mario titles and the additional movie-camera function aren’t enough for the company to meet its targets during the Christmas shopping season.”

Nintendo fell 5.1 percent to 12,320 yen at the 3:10 p.m. close in Osaka trading, extending this year’s drop to 48 percent. The stock, which climbed to as high as 71,900 yen in 2007 when the motion-sensing Wii console was selling out in stores, fell to a seven-year low of 10,900 yen last month.

3DS sales will probably be 16 percent shy of the company’s annual target of 16 million units even after Nintendo cut prices, based on the average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. The game maker may only sell 2.5 million 3DS players halfway into the fiscal year, which ends March 31, according to Macquarie Group ltd.

Yasuhiro Minagawa, a spokesman for Nintendo, declined to comment on the possibility 3DS sales will miss the target.

Analysts at Macquarie and Cosmo Securities co. said before today’s event that the creator of the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise should introduce more major titles or consider developing games for social networks.

’Monster Hunter’

The game maker showed 43 titles for its 3DS and other consoles at the conference. among titles to be released for the handheld include Capcom co.’s “the Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G” in December and the "Paper Mario" in 2012, Nintendo said. Capcom said it will also develop the “Monster Hunter 4” for the 3DS.

Nintendo will introduce a slide pad to allow users to play the “Monster Hunter” easier for 1,500 yen in December, it said on its website today.

Nintendo’s 3DS conference precedes this week’s annual Tokyo Game Show in Japan, where about 200 game-related companies plan to showcase their products. Sony Corp. plans to unveil details of its sales strategy for the new PS Vita handheld player on Sept. 14.

The company, which sells the 3DS for $170 in the U.S. and 15,000 yen ($195) in Japan, is also losing customers because smartphones offer cheap and good enough titles to attract adults who play games occasionally, said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities inc. in Los Angeles. Nintendo 3DS games start at about 4,000 yen, while games for the iPhone sell for a fraction of that price and are sometimes free.

“they can’t compete with free or $0.99 downloads,” said Pachter, who has a “neutral” rating on the stock. He estimates 3DS sales will only reach 10 million units this fiscal year and Sony’s introduction of its next portable player, the PlayStation Vita, outside of Japan in 2012 will probably further erode Nintendo’s market share, Pachter said.

The 3DS didn’t start out as a flop. on its launch in Tokyo late February, the product drew lines of as many as 2,000 people outside Yodobashi Camera co.’s store in the electronics shopping district of Akihabara. In March, Nintendo said the 3DS’s first day of sales in the U.S. were higher than the day-one results of any previous Nintendo handheld. The result: 3.6 million units were sold worldwide by the end of March.

then demand collapsed, with sales tumbling 80 percent to 710,000 in the following three-month period, prompting the company in July to announce price cuts and an 82 percent reduction in its full-year profit forecast. Iwata said at the time the company cut the price so soon after its introduction because of lower-than-expected demand for the 3-D device.

The boost from the price cuts may be wearing off. In Japan, the company sold 55,264 units in the week ended Sept. 4, down 74 percent from three weeks earlier, when the price cuts went into effect, according to research firm Enterbrain inc. In the U.S., Nintendo’s biggest market, August sales were estimated below projections for Japan, according to research firm NPD Group.

“It’s difficult to achieve 16 million, especially considering” the sales figure in the U.S., said David Gibson, a Tokyo-based analyst at Macquarie, who has a “neutral” rating on the stock. He expects Nintendo to sell 14.5 million units this fiscal year.

While Nintendo plans to release the “Super Mario 3DLand” and “Mario Kart” for the 3DS later this year, the lack of bestselling titles starring Nintendo’s iconic Italian plumber or Pokemon characters may have undermined demand, said Satoru Kikuchi, an analyst at Deutsche Bank AG. The 3DS is unlikely to repeat the success of Nintendo’s DS handheld because adults are more likely to play games on smartphones now, Kikuchi said.

“Nintendo should consider embracing social networks, even though it’s going to be a latecomer,” Koichi Ogawa, a portfolio manager at Daiwa SB Investments ltd. in Tokyo, said before today’s event. “Even with the price cut, it’s hard to lure consumers as various platforms including the iPhone and iPad are available now. those people won’t use 3DS to play cards or mah- jongg.”

Purported next-gen iPhone back, logic board appear

More photos of purported next-generation iPhone parts have appeared online, showing a supposed logic board, back plate, camera module, and more. Among the photos posted by MacPost are a white back plate, similar in design to that of the iPhone 4 but with an N94 marking—a prior report indicated that N94 is the codename for the fifth-generation iPhone, and that the handset would include an A5 processor. other photos in the same post claim to show the next-generation iPhone’s power flex cable, “buzzer,” audio flex cable, battery, and rear camera lens.

Another group of photos posted by AppleLeaks again shows a supposed battery, but also shows what the site claims to be is a logic board for the next-generation iPhone, prominently featuring a rectangular main chip, consistent with the shape of the A5 processor found in the iPad 2, and quite different from the square A4 chip found in the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, and original iPad. Momentum for Enterprise Mobile Apps – Workday, Salesforce.com and Box.net

Mobile is fast becoming one of the key ways that many employees choose to do work. Tablet computing devices are proving to be very flexible and functional for mobile workers and open up a much broader set of capabilities that could be accessed on the larger form factor. The limiting factor, at least from the enterprise use of mobile, is the software. Apps designed for smartphones have in many cases been severely limited in functionality, mostly because enterprise vendors were skeptical that the limited smartphone form factor could be used for the broader list of tasks that mobile workers wanted to accomplish. Smartphones are excellent for communication activities like email, IM, social networks, activity streams, etc., light web browsing and for some simple data entry / processing / approval activities like filing / approving time and expense records, but when it comes to “real” work, the screen size is very troublesome. Some great productivity tools are available like Evernote and iWork, but accessing true enterprise functionality on any mobile device, for the most part, isn’t possible. The notable exception has been access enterprise resources through a virtualized mobile client like Citrix Receiver. This trend is starting to reverse as more vendors build and launch mobile apps that allow full, or near full, enterprise capabilities utilizing the tablet form factor. To accomplish this we’re seeing two distinct approaches, the native mobile app and the web based mobile app.  in my recent Dreamforce recap I talked about Salesforce.com’s new web based mobile app touch.salesforce.com, a full function HTML5 based app optimized for tablets. Web apps were tried early on for the iPhone version one but quickly gave way to native apps. two factors seem to have converged to make web apps much more interesting than the 1st generation, increased fast connectivity (3G and 4G) that makes performance more acceptable and the move to HTML5, which provides a much richer experience and greater flexibility in supporting multiple devices.

Taking the native app route, Workday recently launched an iPad app and updated its iPhone app. I had a chance to take a look at the iPad app (disclosure, Workday provided iPads preloaded with the app for evaluation) at the recent Workday analyst tech summit just prior to Dreamforce. The new app includes:

“Organizational Swirl” – lets users navigate organizational hierarchies and drill into employee profiles to view job info, talent info, job history and compensation history.

“Workfeed” – Workday’s version of an activity stream that includes alerts and approvals

  • “Real time business intelligence” – real time reports and analytics that support workforce planning, compensation management, financial management and talent management including drill down capabilities.
  • Google maps integration that provides employee work locations

The app makes good use of the rich visual interface of the iPad, particularly in it’s drill down capabilities. in the updated iPhone app Workday added the ability to capture receipts with the iPhone camera. for all mobile apps Workday extended its SAML framework which makes authentication consistent across all Workday clients.

Box.net is taking a hybrid approach to enterprise mobile with both some native device support and web apps.  in August Box added a native Android  app optimized for tablets, an app for RIM’s Playbook and a HTML5 mobile web app, m.box.net. these solutions add to already released iPad, iPhone and TouchPad apps, and provide a mobile portfolio that covers all existing mobile OS’s.

Overall these three vendors are providing mobile access to a much broader set of functionality than ever before. in the case of Salesforce.com it is a significant improvement over its existing iPhone, Android and Blackberry apps, which have a very limited feature set. If vendors want to get wide enterprise use they have to find an approach that provides most laptop functionality optimized for the specific mobile experience. More and more workers want to have the ability to use and access enterprise resources from a diverse set of mobile devices. The tablets are particularly good at displaying and interacting with data, so are proving to be in high demand among executives as full information systems. this of course is dependent on more and more robust real time business analytics, optimized for the tablet experience. Expect to see more vendors taking advantage of those unique display and analysis capabilities as well as increasing features and functions to match much of the full client experience.

Rumor: Apple Preparing Discount iPhone 4 For September

Déjà vu, much? like Apple’s original strategy for the aging iPhone 3GS, a new report states that Apple is working on an 8GB iPhone 4 to be sold at a discount while the iPhone 5 will sell at a higher price with contract.

According to Reuters’s sources, Apple has contracted a Korean firm to manufacture the discount iPhone’s flash drive. Samsung was previously one of Apple’s vendors of choice for flash memory (the other being Toshiba) but it’s possible that recent patent unpleasantness may have soured that relationship.

The device, which is expected to launch within the next few weeks, is being looked at as Apple’s attempt to capture customers looking to transition into their first smartphone. Given the amount of mileage that Apple has gotten out of the 8GB iPhone 3GS that launched alongside the iPhone 4, such a device would probably give Apple some extra traction among first-time smartphowners.

The anonymous sources also come bearing news of the iPhone 5: it is reportedly slated for a late September release, but sans the cosmetic changes early renders and case designs have alluded to. the device is said to pack “a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera,” but would otherwise look identical to the current model. Hon Hai and Pegatron, the two companies outed as working on the new iPhone, have been told to be ready to produce a total of 45 million units — nothing to sneeze at, for sure.
