HTC’s Rhyme Flirts With Female Demographic

Here’s a smartphone designed for charm. The HTC Rhyme for Verizon actually has a charm designed to dangle outside a purse. It lights up to tell the owner when there’s a call. The phone appears to target teenage girls — that is, except for the price point of US$199.99 with a two-year contract. perhaps a tad pricey for the very young. It comes with three accessories: a dock, headphones and the charm.

While Verizon’s Droid was positioned as macho — remember, the ads called the iPhone “prissy” — here’s an Android-based phone clearly designed for women. HTC is promoting the phone for its style.

The Rhyme runs Android Gingerbread on a 1 Ghz single-core processor. It has a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen and a 5-megapixel camera. The Rhyme also has a revamped version of HTC’s Sense, which consists of a clean home-screen, custom wallpapers and enhancements to the camera app. The Rhyme will be available globally with Verizon as its exclusive U.S. carrier. It launches September 29.

While the Rhyme seems tailored for females, Verizon insists it has appeal for a larger market.

“The target audience is fairly broad,” Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney told TechNewsWorld. “It is intuitive, sleek and comes out of box with a host of accessories that make the experience easy and quick.”

The phone does make a clear style statement, Raney conceded.

“Certainly, a fashion-forward person will love the look and feel of the device,” she said. “And of course, those who are Android fans will love the phone because it ships with the latest Android operating system.”

While smartphones typically compete on internal technology features, here’s a launch that emphasizes the phone’s outward appearance.

“This is HTC’s attempt to diversify the all-look-the-same Android portfolio by further segmenting it,” Neil Shah, analyst for wireless devices strategies at Strategy Analytics, told TechNewsWorld.

“Even if HTC fails to generate demand for this product, at least it will help boost HTC’s mind- and brand-share in the U.S. market in terms of offering a broader and comprehensive portfolio.”

Women are an important target, noted Shah, so it makes sense for HTC to make a foray into the market with a female-centric color and aesthetics, not to mention accessories and innovative packaging.

“This can be a good ploy in a crowded and undifferentiated market,” he said. “As Android rises on its popularity curve, such gender-targeted devices could help increase Android’s penetration into the female segment. this can help Android compete with the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone’s slimmer design.”

Given a wide selection of phones on the market with the same general performance capabilities, the look of the phone could tip the buying decision.

“If choices are made available for consumers during the purchasing process, such as differentiated, gender-centric design bundled with accessories, it would certainly be a welcome option,” noted Shah. “This is especially true for the consumers who are conscious of what device they carry, whether it looks unique, and how it blends in with their personality.”

While HTC and Verizon claim the Rhyme was designed for a broad market, it may resonate more with young girls.

“This actually seems like it’s targeted toward tweens,” Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC, told TechNewsWorld.

“A lot of the 15-year-olds and up may not think this is that cool. The 10-to-14 age girls will petition Mommy and Daddy to ‘Buy it for me, buy it for me, buy it for me!'”

The Rhyme could actually become a fad, suggested DiDio.

“It’s a marketing tactic. If you’re in marketing or advertising and you have a smartphone client, you have to be wracking your brains to come up with new ways to differentiate your product and market,” she said. “It’s crowded and competitive out there. Given that, this idea doesn’t sound bad. plus, look at the timing. It’s mid-September. They’re gearing up for the holidays.”

Apple Can Run To $510 With iPad Market Share Momentum

Analysts and investors like to speculate that the iPad killer is around the corner but Apple continues to surprise. the iPad global tablet market share increased from 65.7% in Q1 2011 to 68.3% in Q2 2011 according to market research firm IDC. [1]

While it’s no doubt that competitors will eventually introduce meaningful products against the iPad, efforts so far have stumbled. for instance, Google’s Android performs better on smartphones than tablets and Microsoft’s much anticipated Windows 8 operating system expected to run on traditional desktops, tablets, and smartphones is still a year away from launching. So for the next half year to a year, the iPad looks to have an open runway.

While we expect iPad units sales will increase from 55.5 million in 2012 to 112 million by the end our forecast period, Trefis members expect an increase from 62 million to 125 million during the same period.

We currently have a Trefis price estimate of $510 for Apple’s stock, about 30% above the current market price of $385.

Apple Gains Tablet Market Share, Android Loses

Apple’s iPad continues to munch away on market share, notching just above 68% in Q2 2011. It is also seeing more demand for its 3G tablets that should boost its average pricing. Android lost steam with its market share declining from 34% to 27% during the same period, partly due to HP’s TouchPad fire sale for $99 and also because Android uses different operating systems in tablets and smartphones. here is where Apple has an advantage as its iOS works for both the iPhone and iPad helping developers in synchronizing tasks.

Google however plans to have a news OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, expected to work on both smartphones and tablets and is expected to be released later 2011.

Microsoft Confident of Windows 8

Microsoft recently gave a detailed preview of its new and upgraded OS Windows 8 at its BUILD developer event and is scheduled for release in 2012. Windows 8 is expected to be the biggest Windows refresh since Windows 95 and will have the flexibility to work on desktops, tablets and smartphones.

Special Offer: Curtis Hesler recommended Silver Wheaton (SLW) at $8. The stock now trades above $40. his readers have also been in gold all the way from $250 to $1,800. Is Hesler still bullish on either metal? Click here for important portfolio updates in Professional Timing Service.

It will also have an online app store service comparable to Apple’s App store with a touch-centric interface that is prevalent in consumer technology today. [2] Moreover, it will run on both ARM and Intel processors, which opens up a wide range of Windows 8 based products, and this could give Apple’s iPad and iPhone a good run for its money.

AirPlay App Projects iPhone Browser Onto Your TV

Tap Media’s Web Browser for Apple TV is about as plainly-named as it gets. the iPhone app uses AirPlay to beam its web browser over onto your television via Apple TV.

Simple, and probably very useful, the app lets you browse the web for anything you like and then throw it up on the big screen for everyone to see. this is the exact way this should be done, instead of the Google TV way which forces onlookers to witness every mis-typed step of your browsing odyssey before you get to the actual goal. Watching somebody else browse the web is hell on earth, and it should be kept strictly private.

The browser is basic, even by iOS standards. You get bookmarking, a search bar and history, and you can display documents in-line (PDF and DOC files are listed), but right now there’s no way to show any video you may come across, which is a rather large shortcoming, especially as it works in Safari. My guess is that an app can’t have two different sources to send to the same AirPlay receiver.

Still, for quickly showing off a web page it looks handy, and at $2 the price is certainly right. IPhone only, available now.

BlackBerry PlayBook: PC in a tablet

by Ed Biado

If you’re in the market for a new tablet computer and thinking of getting similar to the Apple iPad, don’t even consider the BlackBerry PlayBook. The Research in Motion tablet is nothing like the most popular tablet in the world. It’s so much more than just a mobile device to play games on.

while Apple succeeds in creating a tablet that appears to be a supersized version of the iPhone, RIM succeeds in creating a tablet that acts like a desktop computer. their marketing notes claims that the PlayBook is “the world’s first professional-grade tablet…packed with best-in-class features that work together to deliver a truly uncompromised tablet experience.” The truth? They’re not kidding.

half the size of its market-dominating competitor, the PlayBook is ultra-portable and ultra-light. it can get tiring to hold an iPad up on one hand, but you won’t have the same problem with the PlayBook at 0.9 lbs. Another great thing is the orientation lock, which locks the interface’s orientation to either landscape or portrait mode when the device changes its physical orientation. This is perfect when you’re lying on your side in bed or when you have to look at something sideways and you don’t want to tilt your head. it may be a small thing and sorely overlooked by other tablet makers, but having this feature makes it really easy to stay on the tablet for countless hours.

For non-power users, the things under the hood will exceed expectations. The 1GHz dual-core processor running the new BlackBerry Tablet OS provides for true multitasking—and this is where the desktop references enter. What this means is that you can run multiple apps at a time and switch between them just by swiping on the screen. The home page shows you all the apps running simultaneously and you can choose which one to go to, which ones to close or which ones to leave in the background. unlike on other tablets, apps will not automatically quit when you open a new one. so you can have music, documents, photos and the Web browser open all at the same time—each of them running smoothly and not interfering with the others. I repeat: true multitasking.

This also means that when you’re online, you don’t have to view the mobile version of the pages you’re visiting. Each Web page is rendered as they would be seen on a desktop or a laptop. (Of course, you can opt to open them in mobile view if you prefer.)

Because it offers a lot, the user will also have to put in some effort to learn the basics—like touchscreen commands. if you’re used to simply tapping and swiping with one finger, you might want to learn a few more tricks to maximize your PlayBook experience. Swiping from the different edges of the frame will bring up different bars. For example, accessing the status bar (notifications, time, battery power, settings) can be done by swiping down diagonally from the top-left or top-right of the black border. Swiping up diagonally from the bottom-left corner will open the on-screen keyboard.

The PlayBook is also a wonderful BlackBerry smartphone companion. This is especially evident when using the Bridge feature that connects your tablet to your smartphone. The app imports (and subsequently syncs when they’re within Bluetooth range) your address book, email, BBM, text messages, notes, calendar and appointments from the phone to the tablet. This takes away the hassle of setting up your personal data on the tablet from scratch.

Of course, you want a lot of apps to pimp up your PlayBook. Sure, its selection is not as comprehensive as that of the Apple App Store, but the BlackBerry App World has a decent range of apps for you to choose from. And they’re promising thousands more in development to be released in the immediate future.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is packed with features for work, play and everything in between. To look through all of them, including media, camera, connectivity, maps, GPS, built-in games and other functionalities, go to blackberry.com/playbook. In the Philippines, the device has the following retail prices: P23,990 (16GB version), P28,990 (32GB) and P33,990 (64GB).

Sony Android Walkman prototype hands-on

I’ve been begging Sony to make better use of the Walkman brand, and while I’m not sure this new Android-based PMP is exactly everything I’ve been hoping for, at least Sony is trying to bring a bit of a premium sheen back to the brand. Sony is showing off a “prototype” of what an Android-based Walkman music and video player may look like in the not-too-distant future. The device has a 4.3-inch screen, and runs Android 2.3 with some half-assed Sony skinning on top. to be honest, the hardware feels great, so I’m guessing Sony’s more in the “prototype” phase with the software, which seems about par for the course for its Android efforts.

The one big idea, outside of the typical big screen, HDMI output, and fancy audio processing, is an odd-shaped Walkman button on the side of the device. when pressed, it brings up a large target area on the screen for inputing swipes to control playback. The idea seems to be that you press the Walkman button and then you can no-look navigate through your tracks. I didn’t close my eyes and try, but I think it should be pretty effective — it’s a lot more fun than the odd double and triple click skip controls on the iPod / iPhone family.

Still, PMPs don’t live by fancy swipe areas alone, and these days it’s not much of a category outside of the annual iPod touch refresh. I hope Sony can make a splash, but it’s going to need a huge software push to make this thing truly interesting. Check out a gallery of hands-on photos after the break.

Snazzy iPhone Mod Illuminates Apple Logo

I find the mirrored Apple logo on the back of the iPhone 4 to be convenient for the occasional “Has my makeup melted?” or “Is there food in my teeth?” check. If it weren’t for that, I’d definitely be interested in a cool mod like this glowing Apple logo.

This iPhone 4 mod, from British iDevice repair service iPatch, sets the Apple logo on your phone aglow whenever the screen lights up, much as the logo on a MacBook lights up when opened. from the pictures, it looks pretty slick.

How iPatch accomplishes this is “a complete secret” and “very tricky to replicate,” says Andy Smith, the director of iPatch.

“It’s not something that could be done at home without specialist equipment,” he says.

The process takes a few hours. it uses your iPhone’s original rear case, so your phone isn’t any thicker when the mod is complete. you can choose the color of your glowing Apple, and it can be done to black or white iPhones.

This isn’t the first time the iPhone’s logo has been set ablaze. in 2008, a Russian iPhone hack achieved the same thing, using software that allowed you to adjust the intensity of the glow. other notable appearance-altering iPhone mods include a solid Titanium 3GS backplate, a sleek (and cheap) brushed aluminum back cover for the iPhone 4 and an iPhone fitted with a QWERTY keyboard.

“Interest so far has been immense,” Smith says, citing about 40 tweet requests and countless phone calls and emails. “we tend to just do general repairs but this mod was spawned from another we were working on at the time.”

In case there’s any doubt, this mod definitely voids your warranty but Smith says it is reversible, should you have a change of heart at some point in the future.

The mod will run you between £50 and £100 if you’re in the U.K. (that’s around $150 U.S.). If you can’t hop across the pond to the company’s shop, you can mail your iPhone for modding.

Pricing for that shipping option hasn’t been released yet, but you can check the company’s Twitter account for updates.
