App Smart Extra: Cook’s Illustrated for the iPhone

Last week’s App Smart column points out some of the best apps for dessert lovers.

One iPhone app, Cook’s Illustrated, didn’t make the cut, but not because of quality issues. In fact, I found the app more useful than almost any of the ones I tried.

It’s just that Cook’s is a little complicated.

The app is produced by America’s Test Kitchen, which publishes Cook’s Illustrated and acts as the cooking industry’s advertising-free answer to Consumer Reports.

The organization takes cooking seriously, and its recipes have earned a spot in my family’s regular food rotation. (See: pancakes; chocolate chip cookies.)

You can test the app for free and gain access to 50 recipes the publication has deemed its “all-time best,” along with video demonstrations and other ancillary content.

That alone should be enough to justify a download. but things get more complicated, and expensive, if you want to dig deeper.

For full mobile access to the organization’s recipe vault, you must first buy a magazine subscription, which is $25 annually (for six issues).

That combination, expensive though it may be, came in handy last week as I helped my wife with the “Wicked good Boston Cream Pie” recipe. no searching for back issues. no printouts. great results.

Some users have complained the app doesn’t have an iPad version, to which I offer a qualified pshaw.

I enlarged the iPhone version on my iPad, and the app was slightly pixilated, but otherwise usable.

Then again, for $25 a year, you shouldn’t have to squint even slightly.

Customized iPhone App Development for Small Businesses Takes Off

[prMac.com] Tri-Force, a mobile application development company, is fast emerging as a haven for companies and individuals who want to see their ideas transformed into real iPhone apps. the company has gone through a recruitment overdrive to meet the growing demands of iPhone application development. Clients say that they prefer Tri-Force because they can depend upon its iPhone application development team to deliver quality applications on time. iPhone applications are not limited to mobile commerce, utility, educational or entertainment apps. many small businesses face the question ‘Do you have an app for that?’ again and again. an app has become very necessary in the modern world; for some businesses not having an app is like not having a website, and for them having their own app is a must. Simple apps that just list their contact details, products, services and prices can help such businesses reach a much larger and richer audience. While Tri-Force mainly creates complex and detailed apps for medium and large organizations, its recent foray into simple mobile application development for small businesses has met with great success. the company’s iPhone apps for small businesses have helped these companies market themselves on smartphones. the company’s success in this relatively new iPhone application development market owes a lot to customization. Unlike many other medium and small software development companies, Tri-Force does not use the same patterns and structures for iPhone development. an official from Tri-Force elaborates on the company’s approach to iPhone application development, "We do not try and fit the customer’s app need to a predefined model. our aim is to understand the client requirements, to understand what the client intends to use the app for, and to anticipate further needs of the client. Based on these factors we decide whether to go for a full-blown, feature-rich iPhone application, or opt for a simpler and economical design. A large number of small businesses have felt the need to develop apps for marketing purposes. these apps are quite simple, and they are very different from applications that try to fulfill a particular task. Smaller apps mainly serve the purpose of marketing; for instance, if the users have a restaurants app listing its menu and prices in their iPhone, they are more likely to visit it again."iPhone application development, not being limited to big businesses or complex software applications, has now captured the interests of small businesses. While the iPhone application development market used to be focused on big players who needed someone to develop intricate apps for them to offer greater functionality to customers, today we can view a shift in the approach of a number of companies offering mobile application development. Earlier, it would have been difficult to get a company interested in development of apps that require minimal skills, but today most businesses do not scorn at iPhone application development for small apps. For more information iPhone Application Development visit our website.

Is This The iPhone 4S?

Honestly, it’s getting tough to work out what Apple’s up to. Will we see an iPhone 5? an iPhone 4S? Will it be only for China? Will they sue everyone into oblivion? It’s hard to say, but the latest batch of supposedly leaked iPhone 4S photos suggest that we might see slightly better battery life at least.

The purported iPhone 4S is clearly the less interesting of the new iPhones; if it ever got past prototype stage — bearing in mind that Apple prepares lots of prototypes that never make it to store shelves — it’d be the cheaper cousin to a genuine next generation iPhone 5, in much the same way that you can still get a cheap iPhone 3GS if your budget is stretched. the latest photos, via MacPost, suggest that the major change in the iPhone 4S may be an upgraded battery, 1430mAh, up from the 1420mAh in the current model. sure, that’s not a lot of extra power, but if you’ve ever struggled with any smartphone in its last 5 per cent of power, you’ll know every bit counts. how to blog: Pair my iPhone with my Toyota Sienna via Bluetooth?

“>

Just picked up a used Toyota Sienna van and I’m pretty psyched about it – lots of room and it’s really comfortable to drive – but I’m not sure how to pair my Apple iPhone 4 with the navigational system from Toyota. any help or tips? Before you ask, yes, the car does have Bluetooth as far as I can tell.

Dave’s Answer:

I don’t have a Toyota Sienna van (though I used to own one a few years ago and agree that they’re a great example of van-as-car rather than the old days of van-as-truck) but I do own a Toyota Highlander and I’m pretty sure that the Toyota navigational GPS system is standard across the line. if you have one, it’s going to be the same as the one I have. now, yours might be a bit more recent, mine is as-installed in a 2008 Highlander, but from what I’ve seen of other model years, it doesn’t seem to have changed that much across the years…

As you might know if you’ve done this before, pairing a bluetooth device with a car nav system can be a bit of a hassle so I do want to set expectations before we go further. there are steps you have to take on the car system then steps you need to take on the phone, back and forth, until you’re done.

Then again, there’s no penalty for having to try this more than once, so let’s jump in!

First off, on your dashboard you should see a row of buttons below the Toyo nav system screen like this:

Push on the “INFO” button to proceed. It’ll show you the following primary options on the GPS screen:

As I’ve indicated, you want to tap on the “Telephone” button to set up your BT connection.

It’s a bit confusing here because it’s acting as if you already have a phone paired, but as you can see on the top right, there’s a “NO CONNECT” warning message too. no worries, though, ignore all the dial display buttons and tap on “Settings” on the lower left.

Now we’re getting nearer to the setup options. Good. Tap on “Bluetooth” here, but before you go further, notice also that there’s a “Select Telephone” option. Very helpful if there’s more than one driver / passenger who has a phone that you want paired with the Bluetooth in the car!

You can see that the device has the unimaginative name of “HANDSFREE” (instead of, say, “TOYOTA” or “YOUR CAR” or something). Tap on “Register” to add your phone to the car’s Bluetooth database…

Great. now we’re — finally! — at the point where you need to switch to your iPhone and go through the steps on that side to pair the phone with the car Bluetooth system. Ready?

On your iPhone tap on the “Settings” icon, then look for “General”:

Tap on “General” and you’ll see a bunch of useful options that I definitely encourage you to explore. but not right now. For now, tap on “Bluetooth” and let’s see how it’s configured:

The most important thing is to ensure that your Bluetooth is turned ON on your iPhone. Makes sense, right? You might already have other BT devices known to your phone, like a headset or, in my case, my computer. The new HANDSFREE device should appear pretty quickly if you’re sitting in your car, which is what I assume you’re doing if you’re trying to pair things!

To pair the “Handsfree” (odd how it’s called “HANDSFREE” on the Toyota screen) tap on it here on the Bluetooth setup screen…

That’s what we want. now look on the Toyota nav system screen and you’ll see that there’s a Passkey code being displayed, 1 1 1 1. That’s what you need to enter here on the iPhone (well, whatever your displayed code is, but I’m betting it’s also 1 1 1 1). Enter it successfully before the car Bluetooth system times out and you’ll see:

Done! Connected! try it now, make a phone call on your iPhone and you’ll see that the car system will automatically take it over and let you talk hands free. Smart, safe and easy.

Google+ iPhone app updated with Hangout support

Google’s iPhone app for its new social network Google+ has just received a hefty update. Key among the new features of the Google+ app is support for Hangouts, Google’s answer to multiuser videoconferencing.

Hangouts has seen a lot of use among the TUAW staff so far, and being able to use the feature on an iOS device is a big step forward. Google said support for Hangouts was “coming soon” a few days ago, and it’s here now. [Commenters point out that the support only extends to joining an existing Hangout, not initiating a new one. –Ed.]

This update also rebrands Huddle as Messenger, and Messenger now supports sending photos. MacStories has a good look at some of the other tweaks, including new settings for push notifications and a preview of how Hangouts performs on the iPhone.

The Google+ app still hasn’t been optimized for the iPad, so your choices remain running the mobile version of the site (which is missing many features) in Safari or running the blown-up iPhone version. Neither solution offers a particularly compelling experience on the iPad, however. with Facebook’s iPad app still MIA even after f8, Google has a real opportunity to address a huge userbase that neither it nor Facebook have properly targeted yet. If the company’s goal is to “out-social” Facebook, a Google+ iPad app would go a long way to accomplishing that.

changes in the latest update are outlined below.

Verizon begins throttling service for remaining unlimited 3G customers

Smartphone customers in the U. S. must be wearing a “slap me” sign on their backs if the latest notification from Verizon is any indication. When big Red joined the club and went to tiered data plans that allowed overage fees, those with existing unlimited plans were feeling good as they got grandfathered in. Verizon figured out how to coax those folks onto the tiered plans by promising to throttle the network speed for unlimited plan customers who are in the top 5 percent of data usage.

Verizon doesn’t like calling the service curtailment “throttling”, as they prefer the term “network optimazation”.

The difference between our Network Optimization practices and throttling is network intelligence.  With throttling, your wireless data speed is reduced for your entire cycle, 100% of the time, no matter where you are. Network Optimization is based on the theory that all customers should have the best network possible, and if you’re not causing congestion for others, even if you are using a high amount of data, your connection speed should be as good as possible. So, if you’re in the top 5% of data users, your speed is reduced only when you are connected to a congested cell site. Once you are no longer connected to a congested site, your speed will return to normal. this could mean a matter of seconds or hours, depending on your location and time of day.

In other words you can’t predict when this will happen, what you can do to prevent it, nor how long you will be “optimized”. Sounds like throttling to me.

The only customers subject to optimization are 3G (not 4G) customers with unlimited plans. Bandwidth curtailment will only happen when a top data user is connected to a congested cell tower. while not being specific about what sort of data usage will put you in the top 5 percent, the FAQ at Verizon states that currently that is “2 GB or more of data each month”.

Full details about the optimization are on the Verizon web site.
