iPhone 5 rumour rollup for the week ending Sept. 9

President Barack Obama’s jobs speech this week might have been better received if he kept repeating, “Release this iPhone right away!” The iOSsphere this week seized on iPhone 4 inventory levels, carrier promotional documents, third-party phone cases, and reports of plans to build 27 million next iPhones by January to reassure itself that The Wait is nearing an end.

This week: speculation that the “iPhone 5” is really a redesigned iPod Touch with a 3G data option, and a photograph not of the iPhone 5 but taken by the iPhone 5.

You read it here second.

“It’s all so very confusing.” — Charlie Sorrel, Wired.com’s Gadget Lab

The “iPhone 5” is actually the “iPad Nano.”

That’s how Charlie Sorrel, at Wired’s Gadget Lab, sorts out the persistent, and persistently confusing, rumors that variously portray the next iPhone as 1) having a bigger screen, smaller bezel, thinner case, and 2) as just a tweak of the current iPhone 4 by adding a more powerful CPU, and 3) as being a cheaper, smaller, prepaid phone.

Unfortunately, Sorrel’s post adds considerably to the confusion. He alternates using the terms “iPad Touch” and “iPod Touch” and “iPad Nano.” He asks, “What if [these rumors] are instead mixing up an iPhone 4S (faster A5 chip, better camera) and a replacement for the iPad Touch — an iPad Nano, if you will?”

There is of course currently no “iPad Touch.” The iPad is Apple’s large-format tablet. The iPod Touch is the Wi-Fi-only mobile device that closely resembles the iPhone, but lacks a 3G cellular radio. The iPod Nano is the newest design for Apple’s popular music player: now a small square with multi-touch screen.

What Sorrel seems to be saying is, “What if Apple plans the next iPhone as a beefed-up, prepaid iPhone 4, which we can call iPhone 4S? and also a larger-screened version of the iPod Touch that includes a 3G option, similar to that found in some iPad models, which we can call the iPad Nano?”

The current iPod Touch is “fantastic” he says, but lacks the always-on cellular link of the iPhone. which is fine with Touch users because they “don’t want a cellphone contract. If they did, they’d buy an iPhone.”

But Apple could create new iPod models, one with only Wi-Fi, another with Wi-Fi and 3G (and GPS) and all of them, with bigger, 4-inch screens. They can use data-only communications alternatives like Apple’s FaceTime video chat and iMessage as replacements for voice calls, and select just a monthly data plan that makes sense for their budget, without being tied into a two-year carrier contract. (Sorrel notes that FaceTime doesn’t currently run over 3G but many expect that to change with the release of iOS 5 in the coming weeks.)

Refreshingly, he freely admits “this post is pure speculation.” but it is, for a change, intriguing speculation.

iPhone 5 “launches” first week of October, and Sprint will have it.

BoyGeniusReport has a picture of what it says is a Best Buy internal document, which shows, according to BGR’s headline, “Best Buy anticipating iPhone 5 for Sprint, preorders starting next month.”

But BeatWeek has a counter-source that says the document is a hoax designed to smoke out sneaky, untrustworthy, information-leaking Best Buy employees. despite that, the fake is true.

The actual text on the purported document reads: “iPhone 5 product introduction expected, pre-sales begin for expected October week 1 launch/ Sprint launches iPhone 5.” It adds the caution, “Apple product introduction/Launch dates subject to change.”

In an update to the post, BGR says its source, a Best Buy employee, “clarified that it’s actually possible presales will be starting this week [week of 5 September] with the phone arriving in the first week of October, not preorders starting in October.” They’ll have to step lively, since as this rumor roll-up is posted, it’s Friday, Sept. 9.

Neither of these two developments — early October launch or Sprint finally offering an iPhone — is new, so the document fits into the “more evidence that a rumor actually might turn out to be true sooner or later” phase of rumorification, as Ars Technica explicitly declares in its account.

Beatweek says this is all hogwash that, somewhat mysteriously, proves that it’s not hogwash after all. The document “is a fake designed to identify potential leakers within the retailer, according to a source. The report garnered some level of initial suspicion as it also included the claim that iPhone 5 preorders would begin this week even as Apple has yet to introduce the device.”

That is rather “suspicious.” but having said the document is a fake, Beatweek then says it’s only “apparently phony.” and in any case, the document is actually telling the truth because “multiple other pieces of evidence point to both an October release date and Sprint participation.”

Fake evidence that turns out not to be fake! Only in the iOSsphere is such a marvel possible.

If you’re waiting longer for your new iPhone 4, it means the iPhone 5 is near.

You know how else you can tell that the iPhone 5 is nigh? Because you have to wait longer to get an iPhone 4. Picking up an original post at BoyGeniusReport, which said “delivery times” have increased from 24 hours to one to three days, Slashgear observed, “When a product that has been around for a while and is generally available in plenty of volume to meet the demands for the consumer starts to see ship dates grow, it’s often a good indication that the new version is near.” That’s because it means Apple is clearing out its iPhone 4 inventory to make room for iPhone 5 stock.

BGR updated its post Friday morning to note that now Apple’s website doesn’t mention anything about delivery times, only that the iPhone 4 is “in stock.”

And that’s often a good indication that the new version is even nearer.

iPhone 5 will have an 8-megapixel camera for sure.

PocketNow doesn’t have a photo of the next iPhone. but it does claim to have a photo taken by the next iPhone.

The photo shows the lunch (sushi, including California sushi which uses avocado instead of fish) of an “Apple engineer” who, according to the PocketNow story (and amplified by PC Mag), first posted it to his Flickr account, and then marked it private once the news went viral.

And how do we know it’s taken by the iPhone 5? Because, though the engineer’s post claims the picture was snapped with an iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel camera, PocketNow says the photo’s metadata reveals the original picture could only have been taken by a camera with more megapixels: The original picture is “3264×2448 — or just shy of eight megapixels.”

“What’s more,” writes Evan Blass, “the lens was recorded as a 4.3mm f/2.4, which is closer to that of a point-and-shoot than the iPhone 4’s actual 3.85mm f/2.8.”

PC Mag’s story says the GPS data associated with the original Flickr photo pinpointed “1 Infinite Loop, Apple’s famous address” in Cupertino.

Perhaps the most important, yet unremarked upon, detail of the photo: It shows the Apple cafeteria serves sushi with what looks like really fresh shaved ginger root.

Good news: iPhone 5 will be a big redesign after all. maybe.

AppleInsider gleaned this insight through a detailed examination of new “third-party [phone] cases from the Far East.” these reveal that the iPhone 5 will be a “thinner device with a flat back and curved sides.”

And the phone’s mute switch has been switched to the left side above the volume buttons.

The cases supposedly are from Shenzhen L&Y Technology, a China-based manufacturer of accessories for mobile devices, including iPads and iPhones.

QED. except, as the same AppleInsider post noted, “a number of leaked components have shown a next-generation handset with the same size and shape as the iPhone 4.” AppleInsider’s Aug. 29 story showed pictures of a purported iPhone 5 prototype featuring “a screen size and design that appears largely identical to the current iPhone 4.” Baffling, eh?

The pictures “all but confirm form factor redesign,” according to Cam Bunton at Today’s iPhone. He’s not baffled. “With so many manufacturers creating these cases, it’s certainly a good sign that we should see a larger iPhone come October,” he writes. “If it’s packing the dual-core A5 and a 4″ Retina display along with these design changes, I’ll be a very happy customer.”

Whatever iPhone 5 looks like, there will be about 27 million of them by year-end.

DigiTimes’ usual unnamed industry sources say Apple’s iPhone manufacturers are ramping up production of the next iPhone.

OEM FoxConn Electronics is now creating 150,000 units daily, according to those sources, who also say FoxConn will crank out 5 million to 6 million units in September, and more than 22 million more by year-end.

What Apple Needs to Lure Me Back to iPhone 5

As a long time iPhone user, I jumped ship to Android. I see a stagnating platform in iOS versus Android’s faster development of key features. I’m not a particularly platform loyal person. I’ve owned Palm, Windows Mobile, iPhone and now Android. in each case I jumped to the next platform because I saw the move as a step up to a better experience. So I’m willing step again, if Apple can catch up to Android in a few key areas.

When I hold my wife’s iPhone 3Gs or my son’s iPhone 4, which I used for a year, they feel so small. I have a Samsung Infuse 4G with a comparatively enormous screen – 4.5″. The retina display’s high-resolution on the iPhone 4 looks great, but on a display that size the resolution difference between the iPhone 4 and my Samsung Infuse 4 phones doesn’t matter due to the limited size of the iPhone’s display. Apple has to make a bigger display if I’m going to get excited about jumping back on the bandwagon. This is a deal breaker for me!

Our roundup of rumors claims this one looks like to have a better than average chance of being true of the new iPhone, which should come out next month. if so, I will be thinking seriously about going back to Apple. Not only is this a deal breaker if Apple doesn’t add a larger display, it is also a compelling enough feature that it alone may be enough to make me seriously think about going back.

How big does the new display have to be? anything close to 4 inches will be enough for me.

Even though it will have me thinking, the display alone probably won’t be enough. I want a better antenna that I don’t have to house in a case. I’ve tested a lot of cases in my time here with GottaBeMobile and our sister site Notebooks.com. but I always take them off and carry my phone naked. With the iPhone 4 you couldn’t do this without contorting your hand to hold the phone just so.

4G isn’t a deal breaker, but I’d like to have it. I don’t live in a 4G area or I would require it. since I have a 4G mobile hotspot from Verizon, this ranks at the bottom of my iPhone wish-list. if I get everything else on my list, I can live without 4G because my local Verizon store believes 4G is more than a year away. for those of you who live in 4G areas, I can’t imagine why you would want a smartphone without it.

Let me say a word about GPS. This isn’t an Android versus iPhone issue, but a Samsung Infuse 4G weakness. my Infuse 4G’s GPS radio fails me often. I have to wait about ten minutes to get a signal lock and it loses signal often. I use GPS on my phone a lot so this alone might entice me to switch phones anyway. since getting my iPhone I’ve had to use my 3G iPad 2 for GPS, which isn’t bad but kills the battery.

In every other way the Samsung Infuse 4G satisfies my needs, but without reliable GPS I’m frustrated. So Apple, if you give me what I want in the other categories, I can be poached.

Related to GPS, I loved the integrated turn-by-turn directions on the Android platform. I also love seeing my destination in the Android Navigation app. when you get very close to your destination and don’t have to make another turn, the picture that Google Maps has in its database shows up so you know what your destination looks like. having something similar on the iPhone would be a huge plus.

Speaking of your phone speaking to you, I’d love to be able to speak to my phone and have it actually do what I say. The iPhone has this feature, but in my experience it’s worthless. Our rumor roundup suggested that Apple will include a new Assistant feature using the technology they bought from Siri. I’ve used Siri and, if true, I’ll take a serious look at the iPhone again.

I’d describe the iOS keyboard as adequate at best. I use the FlexT9 keyboard on Android, which offers basic typing, swype-like entry, graffiti style writing input and excellent voice recognition all in one keyboard. The last feature might be taken care of with iPhone 5 if the new Assistant feature shows up. Apple needs something like swype-style input. It’s fantastic and makes data entry so much faster when you learn to trust it.

Of all of my features, I expect the following and would be surprised if Apple doesn’t integrate them:

  • Larger display – hopefully 4 inches
  • Better antenna
  • Same quality GPS radio – surely it won’t get worse
  • Better navigation app
  • Voice integration from Siri

I doubt I will see 4G and a swype-style keyboard. if I get everything on the first list, not getting these last two features won’t bother me too much. I will seriously consider going back to the iPhone because I’m in the market for a phone with a better GPS radio anyway. if not, I will likely be looking at a new Android phone soon.

All of this aside, I’m a sucker for new technology. I also like Apple’s customer service, so don’t be surprised if I get caught up in the hype and take the leap anyway.

News organizations should build apps that solve problems, not just republish content

News organizations whose mobile apps only provide users with their articles or videos are missing a big opportunity.

An application, by definition, should be applied to perform a task, to solve a problem. most news doesn’t do that.

Rather than just feed readers recent stories you wrote about their problems, apps can provide tools and data that enable users to actually solve their problems. when you solve problems, you get more loyal users and a chance to make more money. Here’s how.

Define a reader problem, then solve it

Start with an audience-first focus. instead of thinking about what your organization produces (news articles) and how to fit that into an app, start from scratch and consider your audience. who are they, and what problems do they face? use your imagination, do some role playing with colleagues, and actually talk to some real people.

Go through this exercise with specific case studies: who is the user? What is she trying to accomplish? What obstacles stand in her way? What apps or other tools already exist to solve this problem, and is there an unmet need? once you have done that, you’re ready to consider what tools and features your app can offer to solve her problem. And those solutions probably have little or nothing to do with repackaging news articles.

Here are some hypothetical examples:

  • Perhaps in a coastal town your audience would like daily information on tides and surf conditions, sunrise and sunset. you could build that into your app.
  • In a thriving downtown environment, maybe young professionals need leads on the best places for happy hour or dinner. you can include searchable listings in your app, instead of just an occasional feature story about a restaurant.
  • In a suburban setting many people may be interested in publicizing and finding garage sales by location and time.
  • In a crowded metro area people need quick, timely data about the public transit system. you can build train and bus times into your app.
  • In a smoggy city like Los Angeles maybe people want air-quality advisories to decide whether their kids should spend all day outside. your app can show them the current conditions for their location.

These examples illustrate the challenge: to really solve problems you need to work with data and create tools for the user. this means news organizations will need to develop these skills in their technologist staffs or outsource projects like this to capable firms.

Examples in action

The iPhone and Android apps we built when I was at TBD are a good example of this. The apps have four main sections, only one of which consists of news headlines. The other three sections contain live data and information for the on-the-go smartphone user: weather, Metro train times and alerts, and traffic delays and incidents.

The RedEye Chicago app has four main sections, only one of which is for reading news stories.

Another example is RedEye, the app for the Chicago Tribune’s commuter-focused publication on culture and entertainment. The app’s top section has data for getting around by train, bus or taxi, and the second section has information on dining and drinking options. There is a standard news section. And the final section invites users to read and post “missed connections” — strangers they saw and would like to meet.

The Washington Post built a Going out Guide iPhone app that does just what it says — helps people find bars, clubs and restaurants. The new York Times built The Scoop, an app that helps new Yorkers find restaurants, bars, coffee shops, events, stores and more. And the Times has a Real Estate app to search, browse and save property listings.

These apps are all about solving problems and enabling the user to take an action — go to this bar, shop at that boutique, rent this apartment. these are the apps that build loyal audiences because they help people get things done instead of just presenting another thing they feel obligated to do (keep up with news stories).

That is valuable not only for users, but for advertisers as well.

Many businesses want to reach consumers at these decision points. Restaurants, stores and property managers will be eager to advertise to the people who have one hand on their wallets and the other on their smartphones, using your app to decide where to eat, shop or live.

Some data sources are available publicly, or can be purchased or licensed from data companies. in other cases, news organizations may have to think differently about their content. how can some of the information you already compile — real estate listings, reviews, crime reports — be turned into searchable, sortable data for an app?

Building mobile tools with data isn’t as easy as importing an XML feed of your latest headlines. but if you’re going to spend thousands of dollars developing a mobile app anyway, you might as well spend a little more to build a real application that helps solve problems and makes advertisers take notice.

iPhone 5 Rumor: “Assistant” Brings Precise Voice Control to iOS 5

With the release of of iPhone 5 just around the corner (if you believe all the rumors), folks are anxious to learn what new features will make it worth their money. with all that anticipation, the iPhone has got to bring something to the table to differentiate itself from the previous models of the phone – right?

This latest rumor suggests that the iPhone 5 will be launching with a pretty substantial new feature: Assistant. Assistant is apparently the evolution of the voice control system that Apple debuted on the 3G. according to the descriptions of Assistant, it really would be a game-changer for Apple.

9to5 Mac posted an article today that is basically a detailed spec report on the upcoming iPhone – based on what they know so far from sources.

Most of the specs the they discuss are expected specs that people have been talking about for a while – like the dual-core A5 processor and the 8 megapixel camera.

But the details regarding the new Assistant feature are new. First off, the iPhone 5 will reportedly come with 1 GB of RAM, which it will need in order to run the Assistant. because of that, Assistant will not be able to run on the IPhone 4 or 3GS.

Assistant is basically the new way in which you will interact with your iPhone – and it is all based on voice –

Assistant taps into many aspects of the iPhone, according to people familiar with the feature and SDK findings. For example, one can say make appointment with mark Gurman for 7:30 PM and Assistant will create the appointment in the user’s calendar. on noting events, Assistant also allows users to set reminders for the iOS 5 Reminders application. For example, a user could say “remind me to buy milk when I arrive at the market.” another example would be integration with the iOS Maps application. A user could ask: “how do I get to Staples Center?” and Assistant will use the user’s current location via GPS and provide directions.

So assistant will allow you to run your calendar and reminders by voice, as well as navigation. but that’s not all. it will also power your text messaging. according to the sources, you will be able to ask your iPhone to text your friend and tell them you’ll be running late. it will even repeat back the text that it generated in order for you to confirm its accuracy. with this, texting while driving will become a little easier (and more legal, at that).

Also, your iPhone will apparently talk to you. That’s right – robot conversation style. Basically, as you talk to the Assistant, it will ask you questions in order to gain more information about the task it needs to perform. For instance, if you asked your iPhone to set up a meeting with a client, it might ask you which email to use to notify them – personal or private.

My first thought (and your first thought, I assume) is that it’s probably clunky, like all other voice control. Apparently, the “speech interpretation is so accurate that users don’t even have to speak very clearly or in a slow and robotic tone.” If that’s the case, then Assistant could be truly amazing.

iOS 5 on the iPhone 5 will also sport Wolfram Alpha integration through Assistant. If you don’t know, that’s an online knowledge engine. I’m sure you’ve already deduced that that means you would be able to ask your iPhone general knowledge questions like “What’s the capital of Tunisia?” or “What’s 144 divided by 37?”

All of this info seems pretty specific, almost like 9to5 Mac’s sources have already had a hands-on. If Assistant launches on the iPhone 5 and resembles this, it could be an enormous hit.

What do you think of the voice control possibilities? let us know in the comments.

Is T-Mobile iPhone Tally Really 1M Without Apple Deal?

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone fans know no bounds. Sprint (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile might not formally carry the iPhone or subsidize sales of the smartphone, but that doesn’t stop Apple junkies from finding a way around limitations.

Case in point: a blog post from T-Mobile this week claims that 1 million T-Mobile iPhones are already on the company’s network. This T-Mobile iPhone craze seems to be a result of devices that users “jailbreak” — techno-speak for removing the restrictions imposed by Apple on devices at their manufacturing, such as limitation to a particular network — as well as newly offered phones from Apple that come without a contract and are delivered “unlocked” to customers.

That 1 million T-Mobile iPhone figure is a simply stunning number. The 16-gigabyte iPhone 4 is $199 on AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ), while the 32-gig Apple iPhone is $299. however, without the subsidy of the carriers, you’re looking at $649 and $749 for these respective iPhones from the Apple store.

Yes, you might hate AT&T’s network. but do you hate it so much you’ll dish out an extra $450?

Granted, some folks might simply be taking an old iPhone 3G to T-Mobile now that their contract is up. others might be finagling deals on eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), where you can get a “new” iPhone 3GS for about $300 or a used model for around $150.

But if T-Mobile’s blog is true, it’s impressive that so many people are either suffering through with older technology or getting gouged out-of-pocket to simply avoid AT&T and Verizon.

There’s a lot of fuss being made about the potential of a Sprint iPhone — which allegedly will be unveiled in just a few weeks. Some estimate as many as 6 million more devices will be sold as a result, and analysts are raising expectations for Apple as a result. after all, the iPhone accounts for half of AAPL revenue — so a modest bump in iPhone sales is great for the stock.

But you have to wonder just how much demand there is out there on these networks if hardcore iPhone fans already have found a way onto Sprint or T-Mobile. Yes, casual users might have been denied entry – but casual users probably aren’t the type who will spend hours in line to get the new iPhone 5 this winter.

Apple continues to prove critics wrong and find new ways to excite its rabid base of gadget geeks. and it probably will again after the iPhone 5 launch.

Still, investors should have all the information that’s out there. at the very least, the T-Mobile blog is a curiosity and testament to the lengths folks will go to for the Apple brand.

iDW – Apple 3G iPhone Accessories

Apple‘s 3G iPhone is one of the latest breakthroughs in technology. whether you are a first-time user or an old user of this high-tech gadget, you will definitely look forward to own some accessories that are specially made for your 3G iPhone.

There are many accessories to go for, but if you are a wise buyer and a wise user at the same time, you will basically desire only those accessories that have practical uses, such as a crystal case to protect your phone with.

The crystal case is one of the top Apple 3G iPhone accessories. it will keep the iPhone from scratches due to everyday use. it comes with a clear design which makes it perfect for professionals and executives who do not like complicated or bold designs on their gadgets. an alternative case for your Apple 3G iPhone is the leather case. There is one made of premium lamb skin hide, and another of premium cowhide. There are many other designs available to suit your taste, of course. There are also super sleek designs for the super trendy users of iPhone.

Next in line is the Car Holder for iPhone. For those who are busy driving or for those people who travel a lot, this accessory is perfect because it will keep the iPhone in its place even while you are driving. the Car Holder for iPhone is especially designed for iPhone owners because it enables them to periodically check if someone is calling them without having to go through their bags, which can be a risky thing to do while driving.

Other 3G accessory must-haves are the iPhone 3G dock, which has 3-1 features (USB charging, syncing, and audio out), and the Apple USB power adapter. Retailing at only $29 each, these 3G accessories make using your iPhone more convenient.
