The Fleetly iPhone App Turns Exercise Into A Challenging Game

There’s no shortage of fitness apps in the App Store, even ones that can turn your iPhone into a personal trainer, but many of them cost a couple of dollars and have pretty basic features. Free app Fleetly joins the growing gamification-of-everything trend to spur you into working out more with a fitness score, workout challenges and badges.

Even if you don’t go in for the whole social motivation of seeing your fitness score and medals compared to others, Fleetly offers some unique features that make it worth a try. Keeping track of your workouts, the app can tell if you’ve hit a plateau and suggest ways to improve. the fitness level score provides an easy benchmark of your exercise program progress. and the app gives you lots of positive reinforcement.

Like other fitness apps, Fleetly offers workout routines and videos as well as instructions for individual exercises (over 200 are included). it syncs with the Fleetly website, which you can also use to log your workouts and works with Nike+ and the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale.

Getting points for doing push-ups might seem like a trivial incentive, but there’s something still gratifying about it.

PH can be outsourcing hub for mobile apps

The popularity of mobile or handheld communication devices has created a huge demand for mobile applications around the world, and the Philippines is one of the countries well-poised to take advantage of this trend. At the sidelines of a Power Mac Center mobile app development seminar where he was the resource speaker, Ramon Pastor of Numlock Solutions said that although the country is currently lagging behind the field of mobile applications, Filipino developers can soon catch up and provide here and abroad a robust supply of apps for mobile platforms. Speaking before mostly young programmers and other attendees of the app development seminar sponsored by Power Mac Center, Numlock’s Ramon Pastor said that the Philippines can be on the world map for mobile apps “Worldwide, demand is higher than the supply. That’s why we have to encourage developers to go into mobile apps to take advantage of this growth. the Philippines can well be on the world map for mobile apps. We want to tell the world that if they want apps, they can come to the Philippines,” Pastor said. the country has a huge pool of software and application developers who have been supplying the requirements of the country’s global IT outsourcing industry mainly in the fields of Web and enterprise solutions. Pastor said that they just have to shift focus from enterprise solutions to mobile apps. “The opportunity is here. more people are realizing that they can do a lot with their mobile devices, and are not limited to calling, texting, or checking emails. Companies are beginning to know that they can have apps made for mobile platforms, which is not this popular before. Thus, demand for mobile apps in the next three to four years, or even next year or so, will just grow exponentially,” he said. Meantime, Pastor lamented how, in the past, big-name companies have tapped foreign IT consultants to develop apps for them.“They’re not aware that mobile app development exists locally. that is why we have to drive people to join the industry. Demand is so high, they just go abroad. We hope that next time, we will be able to take advantage of this demand.” Attended by over a hundred and fifty participants, the free seminar is part of the 17th Anniversary activity of Power Mac Center.Power Mac Center Marketing Manager Joey Alvarez said, “Power Mac Center and developers have a symbiotic relationship. the more mobile apps are created for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad products, for example, the happier our consumers will be, and vice versa.” Aside from the mobile app development seminar, Power Mac Center also conducted a training on Apple’s latest Mac operating system, OS X Lion, and staged an exhibit showcasing its 17 year history at the Ayala Museum Lobby.

Meet the N5Zero: a cheap 5 inch Android tablet – Liliputing

  • Email

Android phones are now outselling the Apple iPhone (although there are hundreds of Android phones, and just a few iPhone models), and device makers are cranking out Android tablets in an effort to take on the iPad. But up until recently the iPod touch didn’t have much competition.

Samsung is set to launch a line of Android-powered portable media devices next month for $229 and up. That’s about the same price as an iPod touch. But while Samsung attempts to compete on features, other companies try to compete on price.

I recently reviewed the Skytex Primer Pocket — an $89 Android device with a 4.3 inch display and a 600 MHz MIPS processor. But the screen was pretty lousy, the processor too slow, and many apps didn’t run on the device.

Now Charbax from ARMdevices has an overview of another cheap Andorid device, and this one actually looks pretty promising. It’s called the N5Zero, and it has a 5 inch, 800 x 480 pixel capacitive (4-point) touchscreen display, a 1.2 GHz Rockchip RK2918 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and 512MB of RAM.

The little device has 2GB to 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot for expansion. It runs Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and features a 3000mAh battery which is reportedly good for up to 5 hours of video playback or 20 hours of music playback.

There’s also a USB host adapter which you can use to connect external storage, a keyboard, or other accessories including a USB 3G dongle.

Pinch to zoom seems to work pretty well on the tablet, and 3D graphics look pretty good. The web browser could be a little faster, but it certainly looks usable.

The N5Zero actually looks a lot like a tiny Samsung Galaxy Tab. It has the same rounded edges, black bezel around the display, and capacitive touch buttons below the display.

Charbax says the tablet sells for $99 — but that’s the price for resellers. if and when you find this little guy on store shelves it will probably cost a bit more. Of course, the odds of finding it in the US are pretty slim, since the manufacturer pretty much ripped off Samsung’s case design.

Outdoor Trade Show 2011

Brunton Solaris 4 solar charger detail.jpg

As well as sneaking round the Cycle Show on build day trying to get a scoop, we split up in true Scooby Doo fashion today and sent Dave over to Kenilworth on his pushbike to have a gander at the Outdoor Trade Show taking place at Stoneleigh Park. he reported back that it was the last day and they were selling off muffins at a pound a go, but he also saw some interesting outdoorsy stuff. here it is:

Brunton’s new Solaris 4 solar charger certainly isn’t cheap at £170, but it’s a very interesting piece of kit. Portable solar chargers have been around for ages of course, but most of them are based on glass panels which are easy to break. Brunton’s new technology is a solar panel that’s flexible and mounted on a fabric base. It’s far less easy to damage and gives an output similar to traditional units. There’s an eyelet in each corner so you attach a bungee and sling it over your panniers to charge your gear as you go. There’s a two-panel version avalable too.

Brunton also do a range of robust-looking backup batteries; this one will charge your iPhone twice over and costs £50. There’s bigger ones in the range too if you like to take your laptop touring…

This was the first opportunity we’ve had to look at Silva’s new bike lights first hand, and they look pretty good. The 1,000 lumen Singletrack light is aimed mostly at mountain bikers and packs out a hefty punch from a super bright central LED and four additional lamps. The light is up/down adjustable on the fly and there’s bar and helmet mounts available, as well as a head harness if you’re biking at night to your caving class.

The Velo looks like it’ll be a good all-purpose town light with enough reach to navigate the unlit lanes too, and the Simi emergency light is a nice looking unit.

Silva weren’t the only outdoor light manufacturers showing off a bike light; Petzl had their 530-lumen Ultra on display replete with handlebar and helmet mounts, although compared to the Silva it looked a bit bulky for the output. again, it can also be head mounted.

Niteize had an interesting range of emergency lights, some of which looked to be inspired by the Cateye Loop light and Orbit light. The Bikelit, which hangs from the saddle rails, was an interesting unit though, as was the bike bug which features four flexible arms for a variety of mounting options.

If you’re touring and you’ve got a shedload of gear to pack into your panniers, wouldn’t it be great to be able to use one of those vacuum bags they advertise on QVC? you know, the ones that you suck all the air out of with a Hoover to save space. Well now you can, sort of. The Vac Ring will attach to any airtight bag, and if you’re not within reach of a vacuum cleaner you can use a simple hand pump to reduce your payload. The ring itself costs about £13 and the pump is a fiver.

Titanium’s everywhere; now you can get some Ti pans to match your Ti tourer, thanks to Primus. They’re super light, of course, and available in 0.6l and 1l sizes. The 1l one costs £50. Also on display was Primus’ top dollar Titanium dual fuel stove that’ll run on gas cannisters or practically any liquid fuel. You’ll need £175 for that one, but it’s a lovely looking thing.

The Geigerigg hydration system was a double award winner at the show. it features a twin chamber bladder – one for water and one for air – and you can pump up the air section to pressurise the system; pressing the bite valve sends the water out in a jet. Why would you want to do that?

Well, it saves you sucking for a start, and if you want to share water with your mates it’s a bit more hygenic as you don’t need to bit the valve. you can give your dog a drink with it too, or wash out a wound… even have a shower, if you’re patient.

On top of that there’s an inline charcoal filter available so you can fill the bladder with river water, pressurise the bag and force the water through the filter to purify it. great if you’re in the middle of nowhere with limited access to clean water sources.

Whilst we’re on the subject of hydration, Irish firm Contigo also had a nice looking bottle at the show, with an internal straw for upright drinking. The cap has a single handed operation: click the button to release the drink spout and you can push it back in for safe keeping once you’re done. There’s polycarbonate and twin-wall stainless steel versions available and all the bits are dishwasher-safe.

Verizon 4G WiFi hotspot, Novatel MiFi 4510L

My experience having Verizon-provided internet access over cellular data protocols to my cruising sailboat spans three years and five devices, the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi built by Novetel released this summer being the most current. They’ve worked well enough that I’ve never messed with a high power boat WiFi system, like Ben has, but they are not perfect…

Mobile hotspots are gadgets a little bigger than credit cards that combine a mobile broadband modem with a WiFi router to allow computers and other devices to get onto the internet across distances of 20 miles and more. They have upfront and monthly data plan costs very similar in price to a smartphone.

My first experience surfing the internet through Verizon was in the days before mobile hotspots were available. Back then it was with a tiny card I installed as an option into my wife’s Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and a Verizon USB dongle I used for my own laptop. Both used a cellular protocol called EvDO with average data transfer speeds in the 1 Mbps down, and ½ Mbps up range. three years ago I found it consistently much faster than the Wi-Fi signals barely in range of my boat despite a powerful Wi-Fi access point provided by the cable company nearby. in addition, the Verizon product received a strong signal out in the middle of Long Island Sound and virtually every anchorage I visited between New York and Maine (see my reviews in activecaptain.com)

They also worked well below decks in my Beneteau sailboat, easily penetrating the fiberglass to get a connection. Compared to a Rogue Wave or WireAP, there is literally nothing to install, as both devices would draw power from the computer they were installed in.

As good as that sounds, there was a major hassle in using the included software for the hardware. if the laptop went into a deep sleep to save power, or I closed the lid, the EvDO connection did not recover, sometimes requiring a reboot. The software also interfered with the primary benefit of the USB dongle to share the hardware and data plan between computers, because installing that Verizon client on the next computer took time, required learning that specific computer’s idiosyncrasies in switching between internet sources and involved training the user borrowing the USB dongle on how to switch their laptop back to wired or Wi-Fi internet access.

The arrival of the original Novatel MiFi Hotspot to the Verizon network fixed all that. The MiFi replaced software and a physical connection between the cellular transceiver and the laptop, with a built in Wi-Fi hotspot capability to connect up to 5 computers at a time to the Verizon Cellular EvDO network. This made using Verizon much simpler, as Wi-Fi was already configured on my laptop and that of my co-workers. Switching internet sources was no different than switching between WiFi access points. it was now easy to setup and share my data plan.

Life was good until the Droid series of Smartphones became popular, later joined by the iPhone for Verizon, both of which used the same EvDO protocol and frequencies.

At first I enjoyed accessing EvDO from my phone, first a Motorola Droid and later a Droid 2. my Droid 2 incidentally had the same hotspot capability as my MiFi, but I used it rarely as you can’t talk at the same time, also the MiFi could run five hours on a charge and my Droid could not.

But, my enjoyment of EvDO on both devices fell sharply as hundreds of Droids began competing with mine for the same EvDO bandwidth.  rather than having 1 Mbps of bandwidth, which was more than enough for web conferencing and Skype, the speeds I typically experienced dropped to under 100 Kbps, just 10% of the original speed I once enjoyed.

That brings us to the Verizon 4G LTE network and the hotspot from Novatel (Verizon also offers a hotspot from Samsung, a comparison of the two available here). Verizon has a whole new network (click here for a coverage map), using the LTE protocol it markets as 4G (4th generation) with a speed 10x that of 3G. As a new network with few users, it is very fast. I potentially face disappointment a year or two in the future as millions of new devices use this protocol as well, but at the moment life is good again for connecting my laptop to the internet. The laptop incidently does not need to be upgraded or modified in anyway.

With the Verizon 4G LTE Hotspot from Novatel (above) I have access to both the LTE network when it’s available, and the EvDO network as a fallback. The advertised speed of Verizon’s 4G LTE is up to 10 times faster than 3G EvDO, but with EvDO loaded and LTE near empty, I can measure speeds of 70 to 100 times faster. Ten times faster is all I need.

The 4G Novatel hotspot hardware has some improvements over the original 3G Novatel hardware. One of the small differences is the addition of a status display to show battery charge state and signal strength. This is important as the battery life is so much shorter (barely 90 minutes) vs the older MiFi (5 hours). This 4G LTE version can also be charged with the same 12v boat charger or USB cable I have for my Droid phone, rather than a proprietary adapter the 3G required.

I am cautious that my renewed ability to stay connected while on my boat is in jeopardy, however. Even with 10x the bandwidth, someday there will be millions of new devices using this network as happened with EvDO. With a forecast of 120 million new iPhones to be sold in the next year, I am crossing my fingers that the iPhone 5 doesn’t support LTE, as that could hold off the masses for a year. when this Verizon network and it’s equivalent network from AT&T, SPRINT, and others become saturated, it’s not clear what frequencies will next be available to support another 20+ Mbps of bandwidth per wireless carrier.

Actually, I am more than a little cautious. No offense Verizon & Novatel, but I have to say I cannot recommend this or Samsung’s dedicated hotspot product in combination with an LTE (or EvDO) data plan, because it is likely each user will be stuck midway thru a two year subscription plan paying $50 a month for a product that will be very slow as EvDO has become.

What I can recommend, is purchasing a Verizon LTE compatible smart phone with hotspot capability. Why?  First, the hotspot capability can be activated for an additional $20 a month on such a phone, no seperate device needed.  second, you can then elect to discontinue using the hotspot feature at any point the data rate gets too slow. The basic data plan you would still retain on your phone will still be useful to check email and run other apps that work well on low bandwidth, just as my Droid 2 works well even on slow EvDO. Finally, unlike EvDO where the phone can only do one at a time, be a hotspot or let you talk, LTE based smart phones are suppose to be capable of acting as a hotspot and a phone simultaneously. That leaves battery life as the only advantage of the dedicated hotspot. But, for a $30 a month premium I would rather carry a battery powered charger around instead.

Al least for my laptop and I, happy days are here again… until people learn about the Verizon 4G LTE network and millions start sharing the network with me. I mean, I am okay with sharing it with you and other Panbots, but listen, you gotta keep this quiet at least for awhile or I will have to go thru the time and expense to install a Wi-Fi booster for my boat.

San Diego blackout cause related to employee procedure, APS says

The cause of San Diego blackout could be related to a procedure their employee was carrying out, according to the latest update from Arizona Public Service (APS).

As announced by APS via their official website on Thursday, September 8, 2011, the massive power outage in San Diego started in a Hassayampa 500 kV transmission line near Yuma, Arizona.

“the outage appears to be related to a procedure an APS employee was carrying out in the North Gila substation, which is located northeast of Yuma.” APS said on its press release.

“Operating and protection protocols typically would have isolated the resulting outage to the Yuma area.” APS added, noting that a thorough investigation is under way on why the isolation did not occur.

“We are working hard to restore our customers as quickly and safely as possible,” APS President and Chief Operating Officer Don Robinson said in the report.

As reported earlier, the San Diego blackout started at around 4 p.m. PST on Thursday, and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE) have already restored power to 18,000 customers in Orange County.

SDGE then said that around 1.4 million customers could be affected and could extend through the night and until Friday.

Energizer Introduces Two USB Dual Charge Products

Energizer has introduced the Dual Universal USB Charger for autos and the Dual Universal USB Charger for wall outlets. both let the user charge two small USB powered devices at the same time.

The new Dual Universal USB Charger plugs into any auto cigarette lighter outlet and offers two USB ports, so that you can recharge two of your USB powered devices at the same time. it works with most devices, meaning it will not recharge an iPad. the charger is three inches long and two inches at the widest point.

The USB Dual Charger for Autos

The new Dual Universal USB Charger for wall outlets plugs into any live wall outlet and also offers two USB ports that allow recharging two USB powered devices at the same time. Like the auto charger, it will not recharge an iPad. the wall charger measures 2 x 2 x 2-in and is white with silver trim.

The USB Dual Charger for Wall Outlets

Both products have a one year limited warranty. the MSRP for each is US$19.99 although I found both at numerous places on-line for around US$10.

Using the products

The auto charger — the charger works well. it is fast, even when charging two products. I went with my iPhone 4 and my iPod Nano, both of which were more than three-quarters down. both recharged completely while I drove around town for about an hour running errands.

The wall charger — With most household wall outlets this product will cover the second plug space just enough that you can’t use it, but with higher end outlets and power strips that does not occur. the plug folds away when not in use which provides good portability. the recharge time for my second iPod Nano which needed to be completely charged, and a friends iPhone 3G which was sitting at 50 percent, was 40 minutes.

Do I recommend them?

I do. it is extremely convenient to be able to recharge two items at once and the fact that these products are made by Energizer gives me confidence in their durability. Oh, and one more thing, the packages for both are easy to open. no chain saw required.
