Scribabble, $.99, Updated September 13

Scribabble Encourages Childhood Education with Scrabble-Based Learning

Scribabble by Beaver Creek Group is a game for children that’s designed to teach literacy while keeping them engaged. This is accomplished by the game’s deceptively simple, Scrabble-based concept, a format that will appeal to small children by making them feel “adult.”

Scribabble is essentially everyone’s favorite crossword board game (Scrabble), only rewritten with simpler rules and a touch-based interface. the title is based on threes, offering three letters to choose from, as well as a simple crossword composed of three letter words.

Each word has a space for two available letters. Children must choose between the options, clicking the appropriate letter, and then the correct spot to spell whole words. if the child is especially perceptive, there’s a fair amount of process of elimination involved, too.

Turntable.fm, Free, Updated September 13

Turntable.fm Hits the App Store

As announced last week, the fresh and growingly popular music streaming service, Turntable.fm, is now available on the iPhone.

The concept of turntable.fm, is to allow users to listen to music selected for them by others, in real time. more precisely, it’s like a big virtual nightclub with many rooms and each has its own DJ. you can join a room and listen to what the current DJ is playing, vote on his selection (and have bad songs skipped), or even make a room of your own and become a DJ yourself.

Turntable.fm is a great service, given that you can find a room that plays music that fits your taste. the biggest problem Turntable.fm is facing at the moment, however, is its own popularity, and tends to be slow and buggy at peak hours. further, you’ll notice that while you’re free to create new rooms from iOS, the app doesn’t allow you to stream your own music on the go, as far as we can tell. That means if you’re more of a DJ, you’ll still have to depend on a desktop browser.

That’s right, it’s time to fire up the App Store and do some updating. in this latest version comes 20 new levels, new Game Center achievements to coincide with those new levels, and a quicker way to spread the joy with a new “Gift this app” option easily available within the game. This addition brings the total to 240 levels and 12 sets to unlock and conquer.

Exec: T-Mobile Not Getting iPhone 5 This Year

Despite an August blog report that predicted a T-Mobile iPhone 5 next month, an executive said during a recent town hall that the carrier will not get the next-gen Apple smartphone this year.

“We are not going to get the iPhone 5 this year,” T-Mobile chief marketing officer Cole Brodman said during a recent company town hall, as reported by TmoNews.

The blog posted a screen shot from a T-Mobile intranet summary about the town hall that included promises of new smartphones for the holiday season, but no iPhone 5. As TmoNews pointed out in an update to its post, though, it’s easy to read into the “this year” part of Brodman’s comments.

“Does that mean an iPhone 4/4S is coming to T-Mobile this year or is a deal in place for T-Mobile to launch an iPhone in 2012?” TmoNews asked. “There is a lot of ways to interpret his statement but one thing seems certain, no iPhone 5 for T-Mobile anytime before midnight on December 31st.”

The last T-Mobile iPhone rumor made the rounds last month when Mactrast quoted an anonymous “informant” at T-Mobile who said the next-generation iPhone would operate on T-Mobile’s 3G network and could hit stores in early- to mid-October.

“We expect the addition of the iPhone, and the iPhone 5’s ability to run on our 3G network to make a significant financial difference for T-Mobile,” MacTrast’s source said at the time.

What about Sprint? Bloomberg said recently that Sprint would not only sell the iPhone, but it would offer its unlimited data plan with the Apple smartphone. last week, TUAW also reported that Sprint has started briefing employees about an October iPhone launch.

Of course, Apple still has to announce the iPhone 5 (or 4S), let alone what carriers will carry it. Apple watchers expect Cupertino to hold a launch event later this month for an early to mid-October launch, but we’ll just have to wait until those invites go out.

Reviews: Cobra PhoneLynx BT 215 Bluetooth Home Phone Adapter for iPhone

If the value of this accessory isn’t already obvious, that’s probably because you haven’t owned a wireless home phone system: paired with DECT or other wireless handsets, PhoneLynx is the missing link that can share a single cellular phone line with an entire house full of people. And the specifics of the way the accessory works are almost uniformly impressive. once you’ve paired PhoneLynx with your iPhone, picking up the landline phone leads to an actual dialtone and the ability to dial out: the number you enter is transferred correctly to the iPhone. Alternately, you can dial using the iPhone and switch over to the landline phone as desired; obviously, only one iPhone can make outgoing calls using PhoneLynx-connected landline phones at a time. If you’re using a wireless system, calls that come into either iPhone ring across all of the wirelessly connected phones pretty much just as you’d expect: there’s only a small 1- or 1.5-ring delay when PhoneLynx has to switch between iPhones to handle incoming calls, and sometimes a brief continued ring after the phone’s been answered. Depending on how many rings your phone has before it goes to voicemail, this may or may not be an issue for you.

The ring delays and PhoneLynx’s approach to iPhone pairing are the only signs that the Bluetooth chip used in BT 215 isn’t of the very latest variety. to pair, you’re required to hold down one of two illuminated buttons on PhoneLynx’s top, then manually enter a four-digit pin code into each of the two iPhones. once that’s done, lights on the unit flash blue to let you know pairing is active. If the link between your iPhone and PhoneLynx is broken—say, when you’ve left the house and then returned—you can manually press the button corresponding to your phone to re-pair, or just wait and let it happen automatically. Most of the time, the automatic re-pairing works. Ideally, Cobra would update BT 215 with newer Bluetooth chips for faster and easier pairing, but even if it did, only newer iPhones would support the improvements.

Sonically, the experience of using PhoneLynx will depend almost entirely on the quality of the landline phone you pair with it. Callers told us that we sounded more or less identical through the integrated microphone in the iPhone 4 as we did when using a landline wireless DECT phone with PhoneLynx. on the other hand, our listening experience was better on the iPhone than on the wireless phones we tested, since the landline phones don’t aggressively try to reduce hiss and static sounds in their own signals. Using the iPhone with PhoneLynx was no worse than making a call with a traditional landline connection, though.

Overall, while PhoneLynx isn’t perfect, we really liked how it performed as a transitional accessory between cellular and landline phones. Moreover, we love that it’s priced so much lower than alternatives that attempt to dock, charge, and otherwise transform the iPhone into the core of a semi-conventional desktop phone solution. If you’re trying to find a way to pipe your iPhone’s or iPhones’ cellular signals through a home system, we’d highly recommend BT 215; our only hope is for an even more advanced, same-priced sequel.

SANUS® to Debut Latest AV Innovations for the Residential Electronic Systems Industry at CEDIA 2011

Press Release Source: SANUS on Tuesday September 6, 2011, 10:00 am EDT

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — SANUS, the leading global brand of audio/video mounts, furnishings and consumer electronics accessories, will be debuting an assortment of its innovative new AV accessory products at this year’s CEDIA EXPO, the leading tradeshow in the residential electronic systems industry.

AV Racks and Accessories

Appearing in SANUS booth #4154 at the Indianapolis show from September 8-10 will be the highly anticipated SANUS EcoSystem™, a revolutionary multi-volt power supply and a suite of AV rack accessories designed to create a seamless interaction between low-voltage and household line voltage. when used together, the SANUS EcoSystem will save installers time, space, and easily provide an aesthetically perfect AV rack.

The EcoSystem includes a multi-volt power supply, which consists of power switches, USB ports and 12 outlets with both 12V and 5V options. The accessory also includes a thermostat kit that actively monitors temperature inside the rack. should the temperature inside the rack reach 85 degrees, the thermostat automatically activates fans, cooling the rack to a maximum of 75 degrees. other features that make up the SANUS EcoSystem include LED task and work lights, multiple fan options, a thermometer and wire. The SANUS EcoSystem is expected to be available for purchase in November 2011.

Says Steve Durkee, President for SANUS products, “The SANUS EcoSystem is a revolutionary product offering that is designed to provide a cleaner, aesthetically pleasing installation and free up valuable space inside a rack by consolidating low voltage power into a single device.” Durkee continues, “We are very excited to introduce it at CEDIA.”

Another main attraction at the show will be SANUS’ newly redesigned Component 100 Series AV racks. Offered in various sizes including a 15U model (CFR2115), 27U model (CFR2127), 36U model, (CFR2136), and a 44U model, (CFR2144), the new 100 Series racks feature removable side and back panels for easier access to components. A 3U panel located at the back of the racks can be placed on top or bottom of the rack’s rear door for customization in wiring. Vented shelves with backstops, and cooling shelves at the top and bottom of each rack ensure proper airflow for AV equipment. New add-on accessories are now available, including vented blanking panels and shelves, ganging kit, tie bars, solid steel blanking panels and power strips. The Component 100 Series racks are expected to be shipping before the end of 2011.

TV Wall Mounts and On-Wall Shelving

SANUS will be debuting three new Super Slim wall mounts for flat-panel TVs. SANUS’ Super Slim mount category offers brackets that allow TVs to be mounted as close to the wall as possible, accentuating the thin appearance of flat-panel screens. The new VLF320 and VMF322 mounts allow TV placement incredibly close to the wall while also offering full-motion capabilities, a benefit other ultra-thin mounts on the market don’t offer. The VLF320 offers 20 inches of extension for TVs 37″ – 65″. The VMF322 offers 22 inches of extension for TVs 26″ – 47″.  Both models feature an integrated cable management system that hides all wiring and cabling within the extension arm. With integrated tilting capabilities, the VLF320 and VMF322 can be tilted with the touch of a finger, allowing for effortless adjustment of the TV’s viewing angle. Post-install leveling adjustments ensure TVs are perfectly positioned after hanging. The VLF320 includes decorative covers that conceal mounting hardware for a finished look. both mounts will be available in early 2012.

The VSL12 is a Super Slim low-profile mount that highlights the sleek look of LCD and LED TVs by placing them only .62″ from the wall. Compatible with 13″ – 26″ TVs, the VSL12 features a two-piece design for quick and easy installation and a click-lock feature for added safety. The VSL12 will be shipping in late September.

Another exciting new product from SANUS, the VMA401 on-wall shelf is designed to hold components up to 15 lbs. The VMA401’s slim profile (1.38″) works well with mounted ultra-thin TVs because the shelf can be mounted directly below the TV for a seamless look. The VMA401 features integrated cable management for hiding and organizes cables. For those looking for a two or three shelf solution, multiple VMA401 units can be combined to provide a one-piece look. The product will be available before the end of 2011.

AV Furniture

At CEDIA EXPO, SANUS is excited to offer a first look at several new offerings from its Basic Series furniture line. Expertly crafted for high performance and value, all of the new Basic Series furniture can be assembled quickly without tools. New additions to the line include the BFAV546 with a modern two-tone walnut finish and dual pullout media drawers for storage. Another new model, the BFV157 features a heavy-gauge steel construction and open design to maximize airflow, while the new BFV348 provides a classic look and feel with a distressed black finish. The BVF348 is expected to be shipping in late 2011, while the BFAV546 and the BFV157 will be available in early 2012.

HDMI Cables

Several consumer electronics accessories will also be debuting in the SANUS booth during CEDIA 2011. among them include new Super Slim HDMI cables models ELM4303, ELM4306, and ELM4308. The cables feature an ultra-flexible design making them perfect for connections behind ultra-thin TVs, which often offer little clearance and can make connection difficult. all three models are Ethernet enabled and can handle 1080p video resolution and beyond for future generation displays.  All models will be shipping in September.

iPhone App

SANUS will also introduce the iPhone version of its popular SANUS Install Tool Kit™ app at CEDIA 2011. Previously only available on the iPad, the SANUS Install Tool Kit™ features SANUS’ industry leading MountFinder™ and HeightFinder™ tools, which makes it easier than ever to find compatible mounts for any TV and get help with installation. Live demos of the SANUS Install Tool Kit™ iPhone and iPad apps will be available at the SANUS booth during the show.

Just swipe it: Nokia launches its biggest challenge yet – The Express Tribune

Company says N9 will redefine the way we interact with a cell phone.

DUBAI:

Nokia has finally come out with the much-awaited N9, and even more so, with the Meego OS which is Nokia’s first major move away from Symbian.

The latest smartphone offering to hit the market, and Nokia’s first device without any buttons was revealed at a glamorous party in Downtown Dubai. In Nokia’s own words, the N9 promises to re-define the way smartphones are used.

Nokia is battling with other smarphone makers on many fronts. gone are the days when a device had to be functional to be successful. now it has to be stylish, and fashionable. above all, it has to be cool. and based on first impressions, the N9 seems to be all of the above.

Alessandro Lamanna, Nokia’s Vice President of Sales, Middle East and Africa said, “The Nokia N9 is perfectly suited for style conscious consumers who demand best-in-class products.”

One swipe and you’re home

Nokia Global Head of Design, Marko Ahtisaari said that while the iPhone had set an industry standard it was now outdated and constrained.

He said, “Innovation is at the heart of our strategy and with the N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone so we reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen.

Hand in hand to design is the look and feel, and we are certain the Nokia N9 will both surprise and enthrall style conscious users.”

The Nokia N9 introduces an innovative new design where the home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe. whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home.

The three home views of the user interface are designed to give fast access to the most important things people do with a phone: using apps, staying up to date with notifications and social networks, and switching between activities.

Innovative features

With no need for a home key, the all-screen Nokia N9 makes more room for apps to shine. the 3.9-inch AMOLED screen is made from scratch-resistant curved glass. Not just this but the screen size allows the user to watch videos in true 16:9 widescreen format.

Fitted with the latest in wireless technology, near Field Communication (NFC), the Nokia N9 allows you to easily share images and videos between devices by touching them together. Pair it with Bluetooth accessories like wireless speakers as well, with just a tap.

Fitted with the latest in wireless technology, near Field Communication (NFC), the Nokia N9 allows the user to easily share images and videos between devices by touching them together and can be paired with cool Bluetooth accessories. In addition, the N9 packs the latest camera with a powerful 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor, wide angle lens, HD quality video capture and large lens aperture to enable optimal capture of precious, fleeting moments. the camera epitomises Ahtisaari’s philosophy that it is the modern alternative to note-taking and is no longer a luxurybut an essential.

The phone will be available in three colors – black, cyan, and magenta and is scheduled to be in stores in early October. There has been speculation that the launch of the phone was delayed. But Ahtisaari, when asked about this said, “I wanted to launch the phone when it’s perfect!”

While the phone itself is sleek and has great hardware, Nokia itself is more excited about the phone and is not going overboard in selling the new OS, Meego. perhaps the reason for this is that Nokia is hard at work on the launch of Windows mobile which does lead some tech analysts to believe that the N9 may be the first, and also the last Meego phone.

Square vs. Intuit GoPayments

The mobile-payment market has been evolving rapidly. with the ubiquity of credit cards, customers are less likely to carry cash. Near Field Communication systems, popular in Asia, are also advancing, and services such as Google Wallet (not out in the United States yet) will make it even easier for customers to pay without cash.

Setting up merchant services with your bank can be complicated, with lots of hidden fees; but when it comes to accepting a credit card payment directly on your smartphone, you have more options these days. Two of those options, Square and Intuit GoPayment, will send you a small credit card scanner for free when you sign up for a new account. each scanner simply plugs into your smartphone’s audio jack.

Intuit’s GoPayment system surfaced in the news recently, as Verizon started offering its mobile credit card scanner in retail stores. Verizon will charge you $29.97 up front for the scanner, but then give you a $30 mail-in rebate–which is odd, considering that Intuit will send you one for free when you make a new account.

Each service offers apps for iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) as well as for Android. Intuit’s GoPayment also supports some BlackBerry phones. since the devices plug into the headphone port, they are compatible with almost any phone that can run the app. each service is easy to set up and has a simple fixed-percentage fee with no separate transaction fee.

I’ve been testing both tools in my own business as a freelance musician and private violin teacher for a few weeks now, and in this article I’ll outline my findings.

Hardware

Square’s reader is small but sturdy, about the size of a quarter. The tiny size of the reader makes it more difficult to hold steady while swiping. I also wasted valuable time running and rerunning a worn-out card while a student waited for his lesson to start. for some of the cards I tested, reading often took several swipes; the worn card never did scan, and I had to enter the number manually.

The compactness of the Square Card Reader also makes it harder to keep track of. You can attach a lanyard or key ring to the device, but it doesn’t come with one. I’ve been keeping my reader in the foam holder it shipped in, so that it doesn’t get lost in my bag.

The Intuit GoPayment reader is larger and has a much longer slot for swiping a card. It comes in a plastic case with a lanyard already attached. It also offers less resistance, so cards glide through. I had more success getting it to read cards in fewer tries.

Intuit’s list of supported hardware is much shorter than Square’s, however, and doesn’t include my phone, a Motorola Atrix running Android. in my tests the app recognized the scanner, but failed to read any data coming in. The only way for me to use the GoPayment app on my phone would be to key in the numbers manually, which takes longer and comes with a higher fee. The scanner worked well with my iPad.

Square offers only the small audio-jack scanner, but with the GoPayment system you have more options. for $219, Intuit sells a desktop scanner that connects over Bluetooth and includes a built-in printer for receipts. I also tested a Mophie case for iPhone 3G with a built-in scanner ($80). The Mophie case gave me the most reliable scans, better than either audio-jack reader did.

Sign-Up and Setup

Signing up for the Square reader was fast and easy. The company requires only an email address and a password, and a mailing address for sending the reader. I was able to take payments right away, and I didn’t need to submit my bank information until I was ready to start pulling money out. after verifying your bank account, Square automatically deposits transactions each evening.

The Intuit setup required much more information up front–including bank account details and credit report questions. even with all of that, my account was approved within a few hours, and the card reader was in the mail the next day.

Setup with both devices is as simple as installing the appropriate app from the marketplace and plugging the scanner into the headphone port. however, you will have to go into the GoPayment settings and tell it whether you’re using the audio-jack scanner or a Bluetooth scanner–and turn up the volume.

iPad Apps

Both payment apps on the iPad take advantage of the tablet’s large screen, although only the GoPayment app will work in both portrait and landscape modes (Square’s app is limited to portrait orientation). The GoPayment app requires your password each time it opens, whereas Square saves your information until you choose to log out.

Each has a system of “items” to which you can add pictures, descriptions, and prices for the things you sell. The items appear on the main screen, and a simple tap will add an item to the invoice. Square makes entering custom amounts much faster with an easy-to-access keypad; in GoPayment, you have to create an item for the special amount you want to charge.

Once you have the items and charges ready, simply tap the Charge button to proceed to swiping the card. each app also offers the option of manual card entry in place of swiping, and Square will allow you to record a transaction as cash.

The next step is the signature, if one is required. (Square has added the option to skip the signature for transactions under $25.) The Square signature pad is laggy, and my already messy signature came out worse than usual. Intuit’s app records much smoother-looking signatures.

Receipts from Square say they’re from Square, while receipts from Intuit say they’re from the email address you have registered with Intuit. as a result, my email program (Gmail) tagged the receipt from Intuit as a potential phishing attack.

A note about Android tablets: The Motorola Xoom is the only tablet on Intuit’s list of supported devices, and Square does not offer a tablet version of its Android app.

Mobile Phone Apps

Square’s Android and iOS apps look identical, as do the GoPayment apps. Similar to their iPad counterparts, Square will stay logged in while GoPayment will ask for your password, and you’re stuck in portrait mode with Square.

With the Square app, you get no option to create and save items, but you can add an image and description to the amount you’re charging.

Getting Your Money and Paying Fees

Both apps transfer money automatically into your registered bank account. Intuit takes that information at sign-up and treats each credit card transaction as a bank transfer, promising funds in your account within two or three business days. Square pulls money into your Square account, and, after verifying your bank account, pays out every evening.

Square is easier to track when it comes to fees. If you swipe a card, you’re charged a flat 2.75 percent with no transaction fee. If you manually enter the numbers, it’s 3.5 percent with a transaction fee of 15 cents.

For no monthly fee, Intuit GoPayment charges swipes at 2.7 percent with no transaction fee except on American Express cards, and at 3.7 percent if you key the number in. for higher-volume businesses, Intuit offers a plan that takes only 1.7 percent swiped and 2.7 percent keyed in, for a $13 monthly fee; if you do more than $1300 in sales a month, you’ll prefer this plan.

Security and Software Integration

All of the apps require an Internet connection to work. You have no option to take information and run it at a later time. Make sure that you always have a stable and secure Internet connection, especially if you take payments in the field or at events. Although I find such a restriction annoying in my line of work, since I’m frequently at events with no Wi-Fi, this limitation is actually a security measure: Neither app will store credit card information on the phone or tablet.

Square is PCI-compliant and VeriSign trusted. Square is transparent about security, and you can read more about the methods the company uses to keep your information secure at the Square website. The service will export your transaction history as a CVS spreadsheet for import into the tracking software of your choice.

Intuit, being the parent company of QuickBooks, offers the option to import GoPayment transactions into QuickBooks (Pro, Premier, and Enterprise, 2009 or later), in addition to offering a CVS export. GoPayment is also PCI-compliant, with similar encryption standards to Square’s.

Which should You choose?

Finding the best payment option for your business requires weighing several factors. If your business is already reliant on QuickBooks, if you’re currently using other Intuit merchant-services products, or if you frequently run over $1300 in sales monthly, then GoPayment is a good choice. If you’re looking for simplicity and ease of management, the Square system fits the bill. Square’s website is quick to navigate, and its mobile apps are straightforward and easy to get going.

In my case, it comes down to a question of connectivity and hardware. I need to be able to take payments at my studio with its spotty Wi-Fi, as well as at outdoor weddings and other events with no Wi-Fi. however, despite being partial to Intuit’s hardware and pricing (I could benefit from the higher-volume plan during the school year), I’ll have to go with Square to be able to use my smartphone.
