Share your playlists one bump at a time

A New Jersey start-up is banking on Boston’s college population to boost downloads of its music-sharing iPhone app, MusicPound — which lets you swap your musical tastes with someone close enough to fist bump.

“they do a ‘pound’ and the app compares their music libraries,” said Sherif Fahmy, founder of Eye2i inc., which makes the Bluetooth-powered app. “but not just the music libraries. our app takes a look at how people use music — how often they listen to it, when they listen to it.”

Eye2i will promote the app, which currently has 2,000 users, at this weekend’s CollegeFest, a two-day back-to-school event at the Hynes convention center with musical performances and product exhibitions. Fahmy said he’s marketing the app, which is free to download but $1.99 after three pounds, in Boston and in Austin, Texas, to home in on their large populations of music-savvy college students.

Eye2i will give a $1,000 iTunes gift card to the CollegeFest attendee with the most “pounds” by the end of the weekend. They’ll also host DJs Krazy Kulo from JAM’N 94.5, and Clinton Sparks, a Dorchester native, who will give away iPod Touches loaded with their music libraries to the person with the most similar music libraries after a pound.

A Bluetooth network extends, at maximum, about 30 feet, Fahmy said. Using the app doesn’t leave your phone’s data any more exposed than using a Bluetooth headset would.

Sharing musical interests online isn’t new — Facebook just added the feature — but Eye2i sees MusicPound as an ice-breaker for in-person interactions.

“There’s a lot of things out there that help people discover music,” Fahmy said. “but when you’re in the same place as another person, you have an opportunity to talk and discuss the results.”

KLue KLassifieds – Gadgets & Tech – iPhone Update: Need to Jailbreak or/and Unlock Your iPhone Try www.BestUnlockiPhone.com

Jailbreak with PwnageTool already succeeded on iOS 4.3.3/4.2.* running on iPhone 4,3G,3Gs : With this week release of IOS 4.3.3/4.2.* questions about iDevices hackers keep on coming. For the new firmware finally comes a quick and easy to use Jailbreak tool.Apparently it has not even lasted a whole day, until a suitable jailbreak solution is available. Users confirmed the new PwnageTool version is confirmed and all users that tried BestUnlockiPhone.com tool say that the 4.3.3/4.2.* jailbreak has been successful.if you are looking for a way to jailbreak / unlock iPhone 4,3G,3Gs 4.3.3/4.2.* iOS there seems to be a solution available at BestUnlockiPhone.com. BestUnlock Solution claims to have developed a brand new tool capable to jailbreak or unlock any iDevice (iPhone 4,3G,3Gs,iPad 2,) running latest iOS version 4.3.3/4.2.* or lower(4.3/4.2.3/4.2.1). according to their website jailbreak/unlock software works with latest baseband versions and cellular carrier like AT&T,T-Mobile,verizon.after a close look on their reviews page it seems that the software based guide works to jailbreak(untethered)/unlock iPhone 4,3G,3Gs,iPad 2 with 4.3.3/4.2.* iOS .

The PwnageTool can manage the Jailbreak process for the new update already. However, one should note that such a jailbreak is only tethered. you will have to jailbreak your iDevice after each restart .

For more Information on How to Unlock your iPhone visit: BestUnlockiPhone.com

Another fact is that PwnageTool is designed only for Macs so for windows unlock/jailbreak solutions check websites like EasyUnlockiPhone.net . Windows users do not have yet the chance to Jailbreak 4.3.1 iOS with PwnageTool. also iPad 2 is not supported by Pwnagetool 4.3. Fresh Baked Tablet owners have to wait a little longer , until hackers like Comex publish a solution.

In the functioning of PwnageTool, nothing has changed, the same old process. The tool provides a iOS 4.3.3/4.2.* custom firmware update with no baseband implemented for the tethered Jailbreak to be created. The good thing is that you can keep your baseband , so you can unlock your iPhone 4,3G,3Gs 4.3.3/4.2.* with capable tools easily.

Who did this jailbreak with PwnageTool can always, even now expect for an unlock software for iPhone 4,3G,3Gs 4.3.3/4.2.* from the same guy who released pwnagetool.

If you do not poses a Mac, you will probably not wait long for the 4.3.3/4.2.* jailbreak with tools related to pwnagetool . For the next few days, a Sn0wbreeze update is expected based on the same principle as pwnagetool(tethered jailbreak), just for Windows PC users.

Top (Guaranteed) iPhone 5 Features as Release Date Nears [VIDEO]

Like us on Facebook

Notifications

Perhaps the most important and most requested feature will be the overhauled notification system.

The way Apple notifies users now is a throw-back to its first iPhone in 2007. Pop-ups appear above running applications, forcing users to respond before they disappear, running the risk of interruption and annoyance.

iphone 5 Notification Screen

But in iOS 5, Apple has taken a page from rival Google’s Android operating system. Incoming notifications now give a subtle indication across the top of the screen. the notifications are now aggregated and accessable by sliding your finger across the top.

After checking, instead of disappearing completely, notifications are now archived: iOS 5 also introduces something Apple calls Notification Center, a single place that combines all of your notifications

When users visit the notification center, they can also see updates on weather and stocks.

Within Notification Center, you can tap a notification to switch directly to the app that sent that notification, or you can easily delete notifications you no longer need. Dismiss Notification Center and you get right back to your app.

Wireless Sync

Apple is catching up to rivals by cutting the dependency on computers and allowing iOS devices to function fully independently.

New iPhones will lose the traditional “Connect to iTunes” screen upon first startup and instead display a Welcome screen; a quick swipe and you can activate your device on the device itself.

New software can be downloaded “over the air,” bringing the iPhone in line with rivals like Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. Android devices have also enjoyed this capability.

Other tasks that typically depended on a computer are also being consolidated to the device itself. Various tasks like adding and deleting calendars and mailboxes, and even basic photo editing will be possible right on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in the iOS 5, with no computer.

iMessage

iMessage is one feature that users will love but wireless carriers may disparage.

The new messaging feature lets users skirt wireless messaging fees to send texts, photos and videos to other contacts using iOS through the data feed for free.

Different from traditional text messaging, iMessage messages can be sent only between iOS devices, but adds features like group-chat and delivery receipts, read receipts and iChat-like indications of when your contacts are typing back.

The new tool is similar to BlackBerry Messenger on RIM devices. Android devices have something similar called G-Talk. It’s not 100 percent analogous as it can be used on computers and other devices as well, but like iMessage, it will be pre-installed and facilitate non-SMS chat between Android users.

Better Mail

Mail is one of the most-used apps across iOS devices, Apple says.

But Apple’s own mail client has been sorely lacking, behind almost all competitors in its current form.

In iOS 5, Mail finally gets rich text formatting (think bold, italics, underline); indentation options and support for prioritization, things many business users have come to expect from a smartphone.

Full-message searching will now come to iPhone and iPod Touch users, which Apple says will include messages not downloaded onto the device but present on the server. and on the iPad, you can now swipe to bring up the inbox when in portrait mode.

These features turn the iOS mail app more into a fully fledged mail client that will be able to handle a lot more real work, letting Apple catch up to BlackBerry and Android.

The BlackBerry client has been the industry standard for quite sometime, allowing mobile users to mimic essentially desktop behavior on the go. Android’s client works similar to Gmail. both integrate with the device, allowing custom notifications and the like.

Twitter

One function that Apple highlighted in the WWDC presentation is the new integration of Twitter throughout the device.

New in iOS 5 is single sign-on support for Twitter — once you configure your login credentials in the Settings app, third-party Twitter clients will be able to access your login details without requiring a separate sign-in within each app.

This is a good addition for people who tweet, but it highlights some of the deficiencies in Apple’s closed system.

On Blackberry, for instance, users can get this functionality by simply downloading the app itself, since RIM allows the app to make changes to native menus with your permission.

If you want to send a photo to Facebook, however, you would be out of luck.

Newsstand

Apple is bringing something it calls the Newsstand to the iOS platform, which is an app that organizes newspaper and magazine subscriptions into one place for quick and easy access.

The iTunes store will also include a new place where users can subscribe to new titles as well, with purchases going directly to the Newsstand app, instead of littering the desktop with more icons.

Forstall

The application serves as a direct channel to the publisher as well. if a new issue of a newspaper comes out while you’re sleeping, that new issue is already there for you to read when you wake up. you can even read it offline.

“Most of the major publishers of magazines and many newspapers have signed up for App Store subscriptions already, Apple says.

Reminders

Reminders is a to-do list for the iPhone and iPad that allows users to make a check-list of items, which the app ties into contacts and locations.

“Say you need to remember to pick up milk during your next grocery trip. since Reminders can be location based, you’ll get an alert as soon as you pull into the supermarket parking lot,” Apple says.

The app itself is quite simple, but its portability makes it solid.

Perhaps the most useful function is that reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars.

Photo App

The Photo App gets an upgrade in the new OS.

It carries with it more in-app editing functions and quicker functionality.

You can open the Camera app right from the Lock screen. use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture on the fly. Then press the volume-up button to snap the photo as well.

Again, the app syncs with iCloud so photos taken on your iPhone, for instance, can be viewed on the iPad or other iCloud enabled device.

Better Browser

Apple’s Safari is among the best mobile browsers already, and new improvements will make it hard to beat.

Among Safari’s new features in iOS 5 is a feature called Reader. Like the similar functionality in the desktop version of Safari, Reader cuts out the navigation, ads, and other items surrounding the content, leaving just the relevant text and photos.

Apple is also including a feature called Reading List, allowing users to store pages for future reading. These items are synced over the cloud as well, so readers can find them on their computers and other devices.

Tabbed browsing makes its first appearance in Safari in iOS 5, too — for iPad users at least. they function the same way they do on desktops, making switching between pages faster than the iOS 4 implementation of Pages.

RIM Earnings: It’s Just The Beginning

Its current business is imploding. The less said about it the better. BlackBerry is the world’s best horse-and-buggy in a Model T world: it’s the best e-mail device in a world where other functionalities like full-web browsing and apps are more important than e-mail, even and increasingly for corporate users, and smartphones are invading the last RIM bastion of the corporate world.

RIM has no future in tablets. The only way anyone can conceivably compete with the iPad is with a) a lower price and b) a different story. Amazon is attempting to do that with its media-ecosystem tablet. That’s not something RIM can do, and it is highly doubtful that even enterprise buyers are going to spring for such a stunningly inferior product (the PlayBook can’t even do email out of the box).

The emerging markets story isn’t clear at all. perhaps the last bullish RIM story is emerging markets growth, where the BlackBerry brand is still strong and where markets are growing. The story is more complicated, however. Competition is strong. Nokia has better distribution and is coming out with a more credible platform. The open source Android model is perfect for making cheap, high-powered phones that can appeal to emerging markets consumers. And as prices keep dropping on the iPhone 4 and 3GS, and especially if Apple introduces a sometimes-rumored “iPhone lite”, there will be an emerging markets story for Apple as well. Even under the most optimistic scenarios, emerging markets growth for RIM should come at the expense of margin compression due to competition and lower purchasing power.

There is no captain. RIM’s corporate governance structure, silly at any time, looks particularly reckless in a turnaround situation. If RIM is aware that it’s in a turnaround situation, which there is no indication they are. In all their public pronouncements, RIM executives seem to just not grasp the predicament they are in. It’s anybody’s guess whether Nokia’s Windows strategy will pan out but at least the company faced up to the situation, fired its CEO, killed its previous platform and went in an audacious new direction.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9930 (Sprint)

Sprint’s version of the new BlackBerry Bold 9930 offers a few key differences next to the Verizon version, the most compelling of which is less expensive monthly data plans. It’s still not a shoo-in for a recommendation, though. The Bold 9930 is a beautiful, fast cell phone in search of a contemporary operating system. It’s a slimmer, more responsive BlackBerry than before, but otherwise it’s the same BlackBerry we’ve all known for years. That’s fine for businesses which need mission-critical messaging, but for consumers, it’s not enough to keep up with the latest Android and iOS devices with their thriving third-party app communities and more advanced multimedia features.

Design and call QualityThe Bold 9930 measures 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.6 ounces. It’s a classy-looking device, with its sharp aluminum accident band and thin, extra-wide QWERTY keyboard. Typing on it feels sublime; this is the best keyboard in the business. The 2.8-inch capacitive touch screen sports 640-by-480-pixel resolution, which is considerably sharper than the 360-by-480-pixel screens of earlier Bolds.

The Bold 9930 is a true world phone, with support for dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz), quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and dual-band HSDPA (850/1900 MHz). it also supports 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n and 5GHz 802.11 a/n Wi-Fi networks. Sprint also unlocks the SIM card slot, unlike Verizon, so you can pop in something cheaper locally overseas if you don’t mind losing your phone number temporarily. There’s no mobile hotspot mode available, though, which puts it behind Sprint’s numerous Android phones.

In back to back comparisons with the Bold 9930 on Verizon, the Bold 9930 on Sprint sounded basically the same, despite the two different networks. Callers sounded crisp and bright, and there was plenty of volume available. I still heard a slight wash of static around individual syllables. Callers sounded I sounded okay, but not as good as I do through other Sprint phones. Reception was average; sometimes the phone dropped to 1xRTT mode, which is disappointing considering that earlier Sprint BlackBerrys from three years ago like the Pearl 8130 always stayed on EV-DO in my home.

Callers sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). The Nuance-powered voice dialing worked perfectly over Bluetooth. The speakerphone had plenty of volume, but sounded a bit more distorted with than earlier Bolds. Battery life was considerably shorter than the Verizon version for some reason, at 5 hours and 37 minutes of talk time.

User Interface, Apps, and BlackBerry App WorldMost of the same things that make the Verizon Bold 9930 successful are present here. The 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon makes BlackBerry OS 7 fly. The WebKit browser is a godsend compared with earlier RIM devices, and works about as well as an Android or iPhone browser, only with a smaller screen and without Flash. The Bold 9930 continues to excel at messaging, with its built-in push email support, BlackBerry Messenger app, and threaded texting. You still can’t sync with Microsoft Exchange without a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed at your company, though.

Sprint adds its own flavor to the built-in software. The media folder collects most of Sprint’s usual bloatware in one place, including Sprint TV, Sprint Music Plus, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile, and the GPS Navigation app, which offers solid, voice-enabled turn-by-turn directions for free with the appropriate unlimited data plans.

Unfortunately, the Bold 9930 on Sprint also shares the same downsides as the Verizon version. BlackBerry App World is a total embarrassment, a sluggish, ungainly app store that makes browsing, buying, and downloading apps unnecessarily difficult. BlackBerry OS 7, even with its various minor updates, still doesn’t allow for the kinds of powerful apps that Android and iOS devices do. It’s also tough to navigate the various complex icon and settings menus, unless you’re a BlackBerry veteran, in which case it will feel exactly like what you’re used to.

Multimedia, Camera, and ConclusionsThe Bold 9930 is a great music player, but just a so-so video player and camera. first, the music part: there’s a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack, 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot that accepts 32GB cards. The microSD card slot is buried behind the battery, which is one frustration in an otherwise smooth media experience. Music tracks sound crisp and clear through Samsung Modus HM6450 Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars), and the jukebox-like album cover display is fun to scroll back and forth.

It’s the camera and video that can use some improvement. The camcorder portion is fine; it’s finally 720p HD-capable, records smooth 1280-by-720-pixel files at an even 30 frames per second, and sports a useful image stabilization feature that helps with hand jitters. The standalone camera itself isn’t as good. While it’s a decent 5-megapixel sensor and has an LED flash, it lacks auto-focus, and it doesn’t take particularly sharp or vibrant photos. You can watch videos on the Bold 9930, and they play back relatively smoothly, but the 2.8-inch, 4:3 aspect ratio screen means widescreen movie files look exceptionally small.

I like Sprint’s version of this phone slightly better than Verizon’s and T-Mobile’s, thanks to the Sprint Bold 9930’s lower up-front price, and Sprint’s lower-cost, unlimited data plans. As a result, if Sprint’s coverage area works better for you or your employees, this Bold 9930 is the way to go. That said, it’s an old smartphone in sleek new clothing. if you can live without a hardware keyboard, the much-more contemporary Motorola Photon 4G ($199.99, 4.5 stars) is an awesome, Android-powered alternative, with its high-res 960-by-540-pixel screen, dual-core CPU, and 4G WiMAX capability, plus access to over 200,000 apps in Android Market. The Photon 4G is another world phone as well, with both CDMA and HSPA 14.4 support and an unlocked SIM card slot. if a hardware keyboard is a must, the Samsung Epic 4G ($149.99, 4 stars) remains Sprint’s best keyboarded smartphone; it’s slower than the Photon, but it still hits WiMAX networks, and still has higher screen resolution and access to all those Android apps.

BenchmarksContinuous talk time: 5 hours 37 minutes

Protect and Customize Your Devices with DomeSkin

When you get a new gadget, you have to decide how you’re going to protect it.  Cases can provide good protection, but they add bulk and completely obscure the device.  Those thin skins – clear or with a design – add some scratch protection, but some of them can be as slippery as the device itself.  DomeSkins are different than other skins;  they have a padded, 3-D profile.  They come in a variety of patterns and colors, so you can customize your device to suit your style.  They use a 3M adhesive that comes off easily and leaves no sticky residue.  Unlike most skins on the market, you’ll be able to reuse the DomeSkin because the puffy, 3D layer strengthens the skin and helps it retain its shape.  The domed profile adds more protection than flat skins can, and they are scratch-resistant and add some “grip” to your device.  (The phone in the picture is stuck to the glass in a vertical window.  Click the picture for a larger view.)  DomeSkins are available for the following devices:  Blackberry (Torch, Storm, Bold, Curve, Pearl models for $19.99), iPhone (original, 3G, 3GS, 4 for $19.99), various iPod models ($19.99), and iPad (1 and 2, $29.99).

The HeloTC falls short, even for a $50 RC helicopter

Update: I’m being told that this is just a re-branded Syma S107, a $20 product that seems to have unanimously positive reviews in our comments. Save your money and buy one of those with physical controls.

The HeloTC is a $50 remote-controlled helicopter that seems like it would be a good buy. The helicopter itself looks great and is constructed of plastic and metal; this is a much more robust package than other similarly priced helicopters that sport foam bodies. You’re also given an extra set of rotors, a charging cable, and a dock so your iPhone can be used as the remote control.

The problems become clear once you start trying to fly the thing, unfortunately.

You need a stick!

You download an app for your iPhone to control the helicopter, and you can use either a virtual stick or motion controls to fly. this doesn’t do you any favors, as it’s tricky to fly any sort of craft without tactile feedback. The Parrot AR.Drone worked well with the iPhone as the controlling device, but that product is both much more expensive and filled with powerful electronics to keep the drone steady. The HeloTC has no such advantage, and making flying a touchy, frustrating affair.

The helicopter looks great, and is built well

Even after adjusting trim, it was nearly impossible to keep the helicopter stable in flight. even without touching the controls it seemed to pitch forwards or backwards, leaving me both fighting the controls and trying to correct for the hardware’s need to randomly move in different directions. I’m not a master pilot of model aircraft, but I’ve put in a number of hours on a number of different products, and I’m at least proficient. I never found it possible to get a stable, enjoyable flight out of the HeloTC.

The helicopter is well constructed, so even after a number of brutal crashes it still worked fine. I got around eight minutes of flight time out of a 30-minute charge, but the USB charger for the helicopter doesn’t come with an adapter to plug into an outlet. You can connect it to your computer, sure, but why not give customers an actual power supply? I ended up using the power adapter from my iPhone for charging. Once the battery is charged and turned on, a series of blinking lights turns on across the helicopter’s body, making it just as much fun to crash in the dark.

I did everything the instructions stated: I only flew indoors, I made sure the line of sight was clear, and I stayed within a small range of the helicopter. I simply could not get a stable flight out of the HeloTC, no matter how many times I tried. It’s a neat idea, but ultimately not worth your money.

Yes, this is an inexpensive toy, but even for $50 we expect better. I can’t fly this for more than a few seconds indoors without a crash, I can’t use it to annoy my cats because they can best it in battle, and without accurate controls I can’t even use it to terrorize my children.
