You're the Pundit: Last chance to predict the hardware for tomorrow

When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today’s topic is tomorrow’s hardware announcements.

During last night’s Talkcast, the TUAW family was split over their predictions. one of us felt that Apple would limit themselves tomorrow to a single iPhone model. others disagreed. Strongly. Here’s how our guesses broke down.

The Lord of the Rings: Erica felt there would be only one phone to rule them all, with more RAM, an A5 chip, better internals and possibly more sensors — all powering new user features. She didn’t care whether it was called a 4S or 5, but felt it likely would follow the current case shape.

Twins: Doc Rock theorized that Apple would introduce two models: a fully powered Schwartzenegger version and a lower-cost DeVito model, offering a bargain-basement intro price. Steve and Kelly jumped on the Twins-scenario bandwagon as well.

Austin Powers: Mike Rose posited that we’d see a variation of the Twins approach, but that the inexpensive mini-me phone (likely an 8GB iPhone 4, an alternative of the DeVito, but not a truly new unit) would be sold out-of contract, as a standalone multi-carrier device at a rock-bottom price.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers: one other theory floated during the talkcast was about the iPod touch. We suggested that Apple might discontinue the iPod touch as we know it and re-introduce it with 3G capabilities, much as the iPad offers. the iPod touch would be taken over and assimilated into the iPhone family in addition to a new 4S or 5.

iPhone 5 Not Headed for T-Mobile

 

Even though a recent report indicated that T-Mobile USA will be offering the iPhone 5 when it debuts next month, it appears that’s not actually going to happen. An internal company document that has leaked out contains a flat denial. 

The document quotes Cole Brodman, T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer, telling company employees “We are not going to get the iPhone this year.”

Until today, it was thought that Apple was going to allow all of the big four U.S. carriers to offer its very popular smartphone. now it appears that it will just be three of them: AT&T and Verizon of course, but earlier reports say that Sprint is going to be added to the list.

Bad News for T-MobileApple’s iPhone is one of the most popular handsets available, and not being able to offer it leaves a hole in T-Mobile product lineup. Over a million of this carrier’s subscribers use the iPhone, even though they had to buy the AT&T version and unlock it, and also accept that it doesn’t support T-Mobile’s 3G service.

Of course, T-Mobile is in an unusual situation. AT&T is attempting to acquire this company — if this deal goes through T-Mobile customers will be AT&T subscribers, at which point they will be able to purchase an iPhone. but this is by no means certain, as the U.S. government has moved to block this merger on the grounds that it would be anti-competitive.

According to an array of hints, leaks and speculation, the fifth-generation iPhone is going to have a slightly larger screen than the current version, though the resolution won’t change. This device will also supposedly be even thinner than its predecessor, and include an 8MP camera. it will debut running iOS 5 on a dual-core processor.

The Amazon Kindle Fire May Kill The RIM Playbook

As I was listening to Jeff Bezos introduce the Kindle Fire tablet I was thinking about the roll out of the Blackberry Playbook and all of its hype in the media, which was promptly followed by its dismal failure at the check-out counter. how vastly different was the approach by Research In Motion and Amazon, with likely very different outcomes for each company.

The Amazon Kindle Fire measures 4.7" x 7.5". it will provide access to Amazon's vast library and resources and may well seal the fate of the RIM Playbook.

The problem for RIM is that it failed to recognize a shift in the way consumers use their gadgets to communicate. Since the introduction of the first tablet by Apple, a lot of users now carry two devices as a matter of course and revert to traditional use of each. RIM should have characterized and capitalized on this shift to the two-device user, sort of like the two-car family.

Instead, RIM developed a marketing story specifically tailored for Blackberry users who wanted to extend the screen size and hardware capabilities of their handsets. I guess it was the only story they could come up with after they designed the tablet with all of its restrictions.

The reality is that Blackberry handsets are only smartphones in a technical sense, but not near as smart as the iPhone or Androids. I suggested to my contact at RIM that a Blackberry, with its 2.4” or 5” screen will never achieve the status of a true multi-purpose smart device.

Why not? the principle is simple: the Internet was not designed to be accessed or interacted with a really small screen. it is a compromise and a hassle if you are trying to do any work at all, other than reading e-mails or occasional web access. Apple recognized this basic truth with the development of the iPad, which is why about thirty million people also figured it out and bought one. it is an obvious and easily-understood concept. Provide a lightweight device with a large screen, fast processor, connectivity, lots of memory, and a full range of applications and you have a winning product.

So RIM, anxious to get into the tablet game and paranoid they would lose critical market share, rolled out a device with only short-range WiFi connectivity, a goofy scheme to bridge to a Blackberry for access to the Internet through a carrier, and essentially no applications software. the fact that the Playbook hardware and display are excellent does not really matter if the rest of the pieces are not there. they justified all of the negatives, saying that the Playbook was a “work in progress” and are still sticking to that line. In contrast, it would appear that the Amazon Kindle Fire is a finished, serious piece of work, ready to go when it starts shipping in November.

We were repeatedly told by RIM that applications, 4G, Android access, e-mail clients and everything else that were absent would be coming. “Just buy it and we will be sure to get it to you later” was the line. it is sort of like the Motorola Xoom 4G, which missed its opportunity to be the first in the market and almost eight months later they finally got their act together. At least they delivered a serious tablet that works. RIM has not, and likely will not, because in my view the Playbook was DOA and Amazon may well seal their fate with the new Kindle Fire.

RIM should have changed their marketing tack and said that the customer should carry a Blackberry handset for phone calls and e-mail and a tablet for Internet browsing, expanded e-mail, and access to lots of applications through the Android market. Given the Playbook’s excellent hardware, they might have sold the premise and lots of tablets, assuming they also had application support. but, just like the Blackberry Storm, they were too early with a product that was not ready for market. their haste may ultimately do irreversible damage to their company, if it has not already.

Ironically, the Amazon Kindle Fire may do what the Playbook could have accomplished but didn’t.

I use a ten-inch tablet for a lot of different functions when I travel including e-mail, Internet access, showing videos at meetings, PowerPoint presentations, access to cloud-based services, word docs, and a lot more. the Kindle Fire is what I would call a Tablette or scaled-down version of its big brother, akin to the Netbook compared to the Notebook. it will provide access to the Internet for browsing and media content with a seven-inch screen which, as Samsung and Blackberry correctly surmised, is quite sufficient for performing limited functions on the Internet. when the new Kindle comes out, I will likely carry it more often than my Xoom for travel, especially internationally unless I need the capabilities of a larger full-function tablet.

How One iPhone Accessory Company Is Preparing For iPhone 5

How does an iPhone accessory company respond to the release of a new iPhone? as quickly as humanly possible.

Mophie, a California firm that makes protective covers and battery chargers for iPhones and iPod touches, is an official Apple retail partner. Consumers can find Mophie’s “Juice Pack” iPhone cases stocked in every one of the more than 300 Apple stores worldwide; Mophie says millions of units have sold to date. but when it comes to new iPhone releases, Mophie is privy to only a few more details than the average shopper or gadget fan.

Mophie assumes, for instance, that the next iPhone — generally called iPhone 5 because it will be the device’s fifth generation — will feature a 30-pin connector for charging and data transfer. that tidbit is no surprise, as nearly all previous iPhones and iPods have used a 30-pin connector. but it is helpful knowledge because it enables Mophie to design a series of iPhone 5 (external) charging accessories that will be ready in time for the new handset.

The timing of Mophie’s iPhone 5 products is, as expected, somewhere around October. Ross Howe, Mophie’s senior director of product marketing, says the company’s new accessories will be stocked in Apple stores “in the next couple weeks for any potential announcements.”

The appeal of Mophie’s iPhone 5 lineup is more power for less money. the three products – Juice Pack Reserve, Boost and Power Station – are all external batteries that can charge iPhones on the go. the smallest one, the Reserve, is a 700 milliamp battery that fits on a keychain and hides its 30-pin connector under a flip cap reminiscent of a Zippo lighter. the medium size, the Boost, is a 2000 milliamp battery that doubles as an iPhone viewing stand thanks to a cleverly-placed hinge. Mophie’s largest iPhone 5 portable battery, the Power Station, is 4000 milliamps. Because it packs a full-size USB port as well as a micro one and fast (2.1 amp) charging, the Power Station can also power up an iPad.

Previous versions of this series cost $39 to $99 but to boost sales Mophie is pricing its iPhone 5 series between $35 and $79. Mophie also increased the number of milliamps in each charger.

Aesthetically, the series mimics the sophisticated styling of Apple’s current iPhone, the iPhone 4. Howe believes the chargers’ stainless steel details and black, rubbery “soft-touch” finish will match the iPhone 5′s looks, as well. but he doesn’t know for sure since he has yet to see the highly-anticipated handset.

In that sense, Mophie has much in common with regular consumers. the company plans to update its signature form-fitting, battery-charging cases (Juice Pack Air and Juice Pack Plus) for the iPhone 5 but won’t finalize their designs until it examines an iPhone 5. that probably won’t happen until the handset officially goes on sale. To obtain an iPhone 5, Howe says Mophie employees will stand in line and purchase one, just like everyone else.

Mophie has done some prep work already, such as printing out rumored iPhone 5 dimensions to experiment with. but to produce a snap-on case – unlike an external battery –Mophie needs a close look at the different versions of the phone, which is believed to be the first iPhone compatible with three, possibly four U.S. carriers’ networks (AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA.) When Verizon began selling the iPhone 4 in 2010, Mophie had to tweak its Juice Pack cases so both the AT&T and Verizon versions of the phone, which differed slightly, would fit.

iPads, iPhones, Apps and autism

 The fall open house usually was well attended by students and their families at the elementary schools. this was also the case in the structured for life classrooms for children with sensory perception disorders. The evening meeting gave a chance for the parents to speak with the child’s teacher after school hours, away from the rush of work.

Last year, the teacher wanted to take the time during the open house to show case some ideas for Christmas, a bit early for some people. She knew that many parents had acquired iPhones and iPads during the last few years. Technology was changing so quickly and with it wonderful new techniques to teach any child. For those with special needs such as autism, the timing couldn’t be better.

One particular form of technology, the iPad, had become a wonderful teaching tool for the students from room 623. The teacher decided to introduce the iPad early in the new school year to the class. The children were already used to the computer and the interactive SMART Board. The iPad was a new instrument that constantly was changing with lots of different APPS (applications).

When the parents came to visit during the open house, the teacher pulled out her iPads. On it were some of the following APPS: 1). see Touch Learning by Brain Parade 2). Speech with Milo- Sequencing 3). Clean Up (for sorting) by Different Roads to Learning 4). Speech with Milo- Prepositions 5). Miss Spider by Gallaway Digital Worlds 6). All of the children in the classroom had already worked on the iPad. For the youngest children, The Monster at the End of the Book brought lots of laughter. Mitchell, a fifth grader, loved both the iPad and the IPHONE. he already knew how to move around this new technology quite well. this was the same boy that figured out how to make his teacher’s picture, phone number and voice message disappear off his mother’s phone.

Mitchell truly benefited from the various APP visuals. The Milo Sequencing Program was particularly helpful for the boy. it required Mitchell to put three pictures in order. The teacher made the child verbally go through what was going on in the three picture story line. Then in the end, he would get to push “play” and see the cartoon move through the sequencing.

The youngest children, Alvin and Bridget, were learning how to identify sounds from interactive listing. at first, it was hard for them to focus and listen. The immediate rewards for getting the right answer on the iPad were gummy bears and miniature M&Ms. they wanted those rewards and worked hard to get them. Some of the older boys preferred playing “Angry Birds” or “Bubble Balls” on the iPad as their rewards for their work. both of the games involved visual planning skills. many of the children were exceptional at those two games.

The teacher asked parents to consider an iPad as a possible Christmas present. She knew it was expensive. however, she suggested that the iPad might be a great combination gift from various family friends and relatives for the whole family. The teacher did remind the parents that the time on the iPad as with any form of technology needs to be limited. also, it was understood that iPads, iPhones or computers should be used with a parent or family member nearby.

iPads are wonderful methods to introduce new concepts to children. There are so many novel APPS ranging from handwriting programs to voice activated devices for speech to a variety of interactive APPS for improving comprehension and communication. The iPad is a powerful tool but it has its limitations. Ultimately, these forms of technology need to be used in conjunction with direct interaction (such as play therapy) with children who have sensory perception disorders. nothing can replace the importance of human interaction and play with a child, especially for those with special needs.
