Apple’s iOS 5 available on Oct. 12, brings 200 new features

The next major release of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 5, will be available on October 12. it brings over 200 new features to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices. Here’s a review of some of the highlights.

Notifications: Apple listened to users’ pleas for a better iOS notification system and created something called the Notifications Center. It’s a central spot for all your notifications — including those from apps — and it can be accessed by swiping your finger down from the top of your iPhone. (This might sound rather familiar to Android users …)

iMessage: Apple has created a new messaging service that’ll work between iOS users. You’ll be able to send texts, photos, videos, contacts, and group messages between the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. the feature basically sounds a lot like BlackBerry Messenger and will show delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indicators. Messages will be pushed to all your devices — and encrypted. of course the whole thing works over either Wi-Fi or 3G.

Reminders: This little feature is basically a central to-do list which will keep you organized. as it’s location aware, it can even remind you of events based on where you are.

Twitter integration: due to the incredible popularity of Twitter, Apple has chosen to fully integrate it into iOS. this means that you’ll be able to tweet directly from the Camera, Photo, YouTube, Maps, and Contacts apps. you can even use Twitter to automatically update the photos in your contact list.

Newsstand: Apple has created something called Newsstand. It’s supposed to act as a direct line to magazines, newspapers, and other media. it allows for background downloads of media and places it into something that resembles the iBooks app.

Camera: the Camera app has finally received a lock screen short cut so that you can start snapping photos even faster — without even having to enter a passcode. as a bonus, you can now use the volume up button to take a picture. oh, and you can pinch-to-zoom right in the Camera app.

Photo editing: you can now do basic photo editing — such as cropping, red eye reduction, enhancements, and such — directly on your iPhone and right out of the box.

Game Center: The iOS Game Center now has photos, the ability to compare rank and scores against your friends, a way to see friends of friends, recommended friends, and game recommendations. There will now also be turn-based games in iOS, playable on multiple devices.

Safari: Apple’s giving its mobile browser some improvements such as Reader, a little feature which will kick in when you’re reading a story on a website. it will basically provide you with an option to make the content easier on the eyes and provide you with a link to email the story.

More and more…..My company provides Mac Book Pro, iPhone, and an iPad. at a recent meeting in the US everyone was on Mac…..seems the Mac Book Air is the preferred for frequent travellers as well….and sensibly so.

What a rip off. A couple of ipads for $138k? Fair dinkum, you can get a decent setup for maybe $3-4k, with full conectivity back to your office using a 3g sierra nevada wireless card from Telstra.

Add a few more screens, or at worse, get some AV guy to hook them up for you for another couple of grand.

But $138k?!? I’d be very surprised if too many people shelled out for this.

iPhone’s new Micro USB Adapter complies with EU charger standards

Apple has released a Dock-to-micro USB adapter as part of its compliance with new European Union standards for smartphone chargers. Apple signed an agreement in 2009 committing to honor the standard, which uses a charger that outputs 5V at 500mA and a cable that terminates in a micro USB plug.

The proposed standard would apply to any “data-enabled” phone, including all smartphones and many high-end feature phones. USB would be used for charging, and the micro USB connector—at the time already becoming a de facto standard on many smartphones—would be used on devices. “On principle, you would never have to buy a new charger again,” EC Vice-President Günter Verheugen said. the standards were finalized in December 2010 by ETSI.

The European Commission announced in 2009 that 10 mobile phone producers, including Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments, agreed to adopt a standardized charger in order to minimize the “needless electronic waste” caused by the proliferation and regular updating of mobile phones.

Though some believed that Apple’s commitment to the standard would spell the end of its 30-pin Dock connector used on nearly every iPhone, iPad, and iPod, the company was clear that it would not ditch the Dock for micro USB. “As we’ve said in the past, we are committed to the Apple Dock connector and this initiative will not require us to change it,” an Apple spokesperson told Tech Radar at the time.

In fact, the standards actually allow manufacturers that do not already include micro USB ports on devices to comply by offering a suitable adapter. Apple’s new iPhone Micro USB Adapter does exactly that. the tiny adapter plugs in to the Dock connector on an iPhone and can then be used with any charger that complies with the EU’s mobile charger standard.

Oddly, the adapter only lists compatibility with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S. We aren’t sure why, but it seems likely that it should also work with iPod touches and could maybe even trickle charge iPads in a pinch. the adapter is currently only listed in Apple’s UK online Apple Store, but it seems likely it will be available throughout the EU soon. iPhone 4S models that ship in the EU may also come equipped with the adapter and a micro USB cable in the box, though we were not able to confirm that will Apple at press time.

Boomer’s ongoing feud with Phil Simms is well documents and deeply rooted.

While talking about Tom Brady’s 517-yard performance against the Dolphins during Sunday’s Chargers-Patriots game, Simms, alongside his partner Jim “Ehh Hello Friends” Nantz, took a few shots at Boomer.

Boomer by the way, threw for 522 yards against the Redskins on 10/6/96, which is good for 3rd best all-time. that led to Craig to question: what has Jim Nantz accomplished on the football field that allows him to take shots at an NFL MVP (Booms won the award in 1988)? Especially considering how sensitive Nantz gets when Craig pokes fun at him.

Apple dropping iPhone prices, making iPhone 3GS 8GB free

With all of the news coming out of Apple today, are you finding yourself in the market for a new iPhone but don’t want to pay full price for an iPhone 4S? Well, you’ll soon be in luck.

During the Apple press conference today, Apple announced plans to slash prices on existing iPhone models. What’s more, they will also be making the iPhone 3Gs free with new contracts.

Starting soon, you’ll be able to pick yourself up a brand new 8GB iPhone 4 with a new contract for $99. in comparison, the iPhone 4S will run you $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for the 32GB version, and $399 for the top-end 64GB version.

Currently, it isn’t known whether or not Apple will be slashing prices on other current iPhone models, such as the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 models – but hey, at least you’ll be able to pick up an iPhone 3GS for free or, if you prefer, an iPhone 4 on the (relatively) cheap.

Welcome to the 411, my column answering all your questions about cell phones and cell phone accessories. I receive plenty of questions about these subjects via e-mail, so I figured many of you might have similar queries, too. at times, I might solicit answers from readers if I’m stumped. I currently carry 2 phones, one Verizon (CDMA) and one AT&T (GSM). this has served me well at getting coverage most everywhere I go. but what I would really love to do is combine the 2 accounts onto 1 phone. Are there any devices available that I could combine the 2 accounts (Verizon & AT&T) onto a single phone? — TC, via e-mail

I would say probably not. There are dual-mode CDMA/GSM phones like the Verizon world phones, but the GSM chip in those handsets can only be used with overseas carriers. these phones can be SIM unlocked, but even then, many of them have additional locks that make them unusable with either AT&T or T-Mobile. if you do want to use two accounts in one phone, I can think of dual-SIM card handsets like the Blu Speed and the Duet D888, but these are GSM-only. if anyone has other ideas, please let us know in the comments.

Hi Nicole. Does the Motorola Droid Bionic come with the option to buy it unlocked. I would like to buy foreign prepaid SIM cards for use overseas? I travel a lot. if not what would your recommendation be for someone who travels a lot and partially lives overseas and get all or most of the features these phones have to offer. thank you for your advice. — Dwayne, via e-mail

The Motorola Droid Pro is one of a few Verizon world phones.

No, the Motorola Droid Bionic is a Verizon Wireless phone, which makes it a CDMA device. the use of SIM cards is a GSM technology. the Droid Bionic does have a SIM card in it, but that’s an LTE SIM card, which is purely for 4G data and not for voice. if you want a Verizon world phone, you can opt for the Motorola Droid Pro, the Motorola Droid 3, the Motorola Droid 2 Global, the HTC Droid Incredible 2, the HTC Trophy (which is a Windows Phone), the BlackBerry Bold 9930, or the BlackBerry Torch 9850. You can ask Verizon to unlock these phones when you travel abroad as long as you tell them you’ll be using foreign SIM cards with them.

another option would of course be to choose any smartphone from T-Mobile or AT&T, as they are GSM carriers. if you want to go unlocked, that’s even better, as you don’t have to sign up for a two-year contract. Our favorite unlocked phone at the moment is the Samsung Galaxy S II, though you have to purchase it at a far more expensive price.

Incidentally, the Galaxy S II will also be available under contract from T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint (in the form of the Epic 4G Touch) if you want it cheaper and you’re not opposed to contracts.

I am currently an AT&T customer with aniPhone 4 and can’t afford it. Can I switch to a simpler mobile plan in your opinion? Safely? will they “unlock” it? a term new to me. or can MetroPCS handle theiPhone yet? thx! — kholo, via e-mail

You definitely can’t use the AT&T iPhone 4 with MetroPCS, because MetroPCS is a CDMA carrier while the iPhone 4 for AT&T is a GSM device. Even if you did unlock the iPhone 4, you wouldn’t be able to use the phone on MetroPCS. as for unlocking the phone, carriers typically don’t do it unless you give the excuse of international travel, and even then it’s a case-by-case basis. From what I understand, AT&T generally doesn’t unlock its iPhones. Even if you did, though, you would have to get a Micro-SIM card from the other carrier, which isn’t always possible. You could also try unlocking the phone yourself, but it’s fairly complicated.

As your primary concern seems to be saving money, I would suggest bringing that concern up with AT&T customer service reps and see what they say to you. Be assertive and say that you’re willing to change carriers if they don’t lower the bill. sometimes this works, although sometimes it doesn’t. You could also lower your data plan to the minimum 500MB, which is $15 a month, and lower your monthly voice minutes to the minimum, too. if none of these tactics makes your monthly bill any lower, then you might just have to give the phone up and get a handset with a cheaper plan. if anyone has other ideas, let us know.
