Custom iPhone Case Finished « Aaron Stroot

Surprisingly, when I asked my girlfriend to craft a custom iPhone case that actually looked like an iPhone, she agreed! she thought it sounded like a fun project, so we picked up the materials at Hobby Lobby on Saturday. I was surprised that our total bill was only $15.00.

She worked most of Saturday off and on and had made some really good progress. Today she finished the back of the case and putting everything together. I figured she would want to make another one for her iPhone, but she doesn’t want to do another one. Without further ado, here are the pictures of the finished product. It definitely turned out great.

Update: she did another case that actually blows this one away, in my opinion. the first case has icons that are 6×6, whereas the new one is 7×7. the icons really stand out so much better. See the newer one on my flickr photostream.

Vita’s 3G Downloads Capped At Same Size As iPhone

The magical limit for iPhone games on the App Store – 20MB – has been carried over to PS Vita.

We’ve talked about this with developers in the past, if your game is bigger than 20MB then it will be less of an impulse buy because potential customers will need to wait until they get to a Wi-Fi point to download it, rather than just grabbing it whilst out and about on 3G.

Speaking at ASCII, a Sony representative confirmed that the limit will be there for the 3G version of the Vita, at least initially.  This will hopefully result in much smaller apps than we’re used to (even Minis can run up to 100MB) and – fingers crossed – some cheaper apps to.

If PS Vita is to be as mass market as Sony are hoping for, they’re going to need to work on those prices.

In related news, Army Corps of Hell, one of the PS Vita’s early Japanese games, will not need a memory card to save games.  The confusion came from a box art for the title showing the requirement for a memory card, but the full release will not require one, instead saving to the game card itself.

Square Enix’s game will also be ‘priced like a PSP title’ and will be cheaper to download from the Store than buy physically.  not that this will prevent other games from doing differently, and those memory cards aren’t cheap.

TECH TIME REVIEW: Livio Radio kit bridges smartphone with your car stereo WITH VIDEO – theoaklandpress.com

In the area of Internet radio, Ferndale-based Livio Radio has been one of the leading innovators for several years now. Their newest product in this arena takes us to the automobile, where its new Bluetooth Internet Radio Car Kit (aka “The Kit”) acts as a connector between your smartphone and your car stereo, using Bluetooth A2DP technology.I recently tested out the product, and I’ll take you through the highs and lows of my experience with it.LOOKS, SETUPThere is a basic, two-part design on The Kit. You have the device itself, a small unit this fits in the palm of your hand, which attaches to an adaptor that plugs into your car’s 12-volt power slot (aka the lighter port).there is a flexible neck on the device, so you can adjust its location in the car and have it be out of your way so it doesn’t interfere with your driving. The setup on this device, which works as an FM transmitter, is very simple. just turn it on, and it will display what station to set your radio to in order to hear the streamed content from the content. Then, you’ll have to make the Bluetooth connection to the device from your smartphone. It should automatically connect every time after the initial setup.to put it in plain English, once you have paired your phone to the car stereo via The Kit (a fast process, just minutes), whatever comes through your phone now will come through your car’s speakers. Content from Livio Radio’s app also can be streamed (including FM, AM and Internet based stations), or programs like Pandora, Slacker, etc. even for people who aren’t tech-savvy, it is not hard to set up.CONTROLSThere are a variety of buttons on The Kit, which can be used to control your music without picking up the device while you are driving. You have buttons for Play, Stop, FF, Rewind, Pause, which can be used on Pandora or iTunes, or switch between stations on the Livio app.You can also make BlueTooth calls with your voice through The Kit, which not only is safer, but also is within the law. with many states, including Michigan, cracking down on texting and other phone activities while driving, anything that can be done by voice is a plus. My calling experience wasn’t perfect, and it’s obviously not the same as a Bluetooth in-ear due to the distance to the microphone, but I was able to have conversations through the device without any major concerns. The device has call and hangup buttons for calling. there is also a “tag” button (which tags a song, so you buy it later on your phone via iTunes), recommendation button (suggests similar stations), and a button to launch the Livio app.LIVIO APPThere are two versions of the Livio Radio app, a free one and a paid one for $4.99. You automatically get the paid version of the app when you buy The Kit.What you get access to via the paid app is a total of 45,000+ radio streams, so you’ll never run out of options to consider. Favorites can be saved on the app so you don’t have to search for them every time.SO WHAT’S THE POINT?The idea of The Kit, in short, is to offer as much use of the Livio Radio experience in your car while you drive, without requiring you to play with your phone and possible get into an accident. once you learn the location of the buttons, you can keep your eyes focused straight ahead so you won’t be distracted from the most important thing you’re doing – driving. The streaming will work even if the phone is tossed in the back seat and not by your site. I’d almost recommend putting it in the back of the car, so you aren’t tempted to pick it up. Set your station, hit play, and then control volume with your car stereo. I always recommend being safe, so I wouldn’t start playing around and changing stations in the car while you’re driving. just use the controls on The Kit to forward past songs if needed.Sound, etc.My biggest complaint about The Kit is the interference I would sometimes hear when driving in certain areas, which made it sound muddled. Usually music came through my speakers loud and clear, but this interference (not an uncommon problem with FM transmitters) did pop up from time to time.I would also recommend finding a good position for the device, or it could get in the way of your steering wheel and distract you on the road. Keep it a safe distance from where you’ll find your hands when you are driving and making turns.also, the simple fact that you have to attach something to your car to make this work will turn some people off, as they will prefer the built-in technology on most new cars that allows for streaming (beware though, that there can be monthly costs associated with these new cars; such as a monthly satellite radio of $15 or more).Alternative to satelliteLivio is pushing The Kit as an alternative to satellite radio. Why spend that $15 each month when you can buy one item and be set with endless online audio in the car, they say? This is a good argument, but kind of like the whole cable cord cutting trend, it’s not going to be done by mass amounts of people right away. Only a certain percentage of people are even aware of something like this.FYI: The Kit is fully integrated with the iPhone at this point, but I was still able to do most of what it does on an Android phone. The full Android version is coming soon.one thing some people will like is that The Kit eliminates wires, so you won’t have to physically to connect your phone to your car stereo. there is an AUX cable included, though, just in case you really need it.Other featuresIf you have a screen in your car with a scrolling readout, the name of the song currently streaming will scroll across your screen.one feature I really liked is that The Kit has a USB charger on it, so you can charge your phone while you drive (because we all know that phone batteries can be notoriously bad).there is also a noise-canceling feature, so the person you are speaking to shouldn’t hear a bunch of wind coming from your end of the call.PRICEThe Kit has a suggested price of $119.99, but it can be found online for about $100 (amazon.com, etc.)BOTTOM LINEThe Bluetooth Internet Radio Car Kit is another innovative device from Livio Radio, which helps bring the music of the Internet flowing into your vehicle, and allows you to manipulate your music selections in the car without fiddling with your phone. As I advise with all electronics in the car, be safe and be careful to set things up how you want them before you get on the road. This device is a good option for travelling, because when you are on long road trips good radio might be hard to find. This allows you to hear what you want. But the price may be off-putting to some, even with the knowledge that you’re avoiding satellite fees. It’s up to each person to determine whether the device is worth it for their circumstances.I just know that my experience with the device was a mostly positive one, and with everyone streaming music through their phones these days, it’s nice to have some more wireless options to help get that sound to the big car speakers. there are likely other less expensive options on the market, but they probably won’t offer all the features on the Livio product.Matt Myftiu can be reached at or 248-745-4617. What to expect when Apple finally 'talks iPhone' at the launch

For months, rumors and speculation have been obsessed with the next iPhone’s hardware including the screen size, a processor upgrade, more memory, the shape of the case and even the material used for the case. But the announcement (Wednesday, AEST) at Apple’s California headquarters is more likely to show the company’s conviction that hardware is in a sense simply an “enabler” for software.

iPhone 5 will be notable because of the confluence of three software elements: version 5 of the iOS operating system, the services that make up Apple’s new iCloud offering, and reportedly a sophisticated voice-powered user interface, dubbed “Assistant.”

IPHONEYS: The iPhone 5 edition

RUMORS: iPhone 5 rumor roundup for the week ended Sept. 30

A number of Apple watchers now think the new iPhone will be very similar, including in screen size, to the existing iPhone 4, which has proven spectacularly successful. the key hardware differences are likely to be the use of Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, and adding a 64GB model to the existing 16GB and 32GB models.

There is “pretty good evidence that Apple is set to release a new phone that looks like the iPhone 4,” writes tech blogger John Gruber. “The question is whether that phone will be the new high-end model, or the new low-end model. (If it’s the high-end model, what will the low-end model be? it doesn’t seem right to me that Apple would keep selling the 3GS into 2012. the simplest solution: 16/32/64 GB A5-powered iPhones at the high-end, and an 8 GB A4-powered iPhone at the low end, all of them looking like today’s iPhone 4.)”

With the release of iOS 5, announced in June, a large number of existing iPhone users will be able to upgrade to a bunch of new features and capabilities, without needing more storage or a faster processor. in part that’s because iOS 5 will support the new iCloud service.

Together, they create a new model of Apple mobile devices, cutting them completely free of being tethered to either a Mac or a PC. from now on, the iPhone and presumably other iOS devices will rely solely on a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Starting with iOS 5, software content can be updated, transferred and backed up incrementally and wirelessly, via Wi-Fi Sync and SSL, without having to cable the device to your computer.

Push notifications of emails, missed calls and other updates or state changes will be much smoother for users in iOS 5. It’s a subtle but essential difference that will make each iOS device, including iPhone 5, seem much like a “live” device on the network. Until now, the Apple Push Notification system, unveiled in 2009, interrupted whatever task the user was doing: Each notification had to be manually acknowledged. But in iOS 5, the new Notification Center will consolidate these alerts and changes for you, letting you access them by swiping a finger down from the top menu. at a glance, you can see missed calls, new voicemails and text and push notices from the App Store.

Apple is striving for a similar seamless quality to the new iCloud services. [See “Apple iCloud: a Visual Tour”] iOS apps can create documents that are automatically pushed to other devices in the user’s iCloud “account,” including Macs, with no user intervention. Similarly, iCloud will work with local apps to sync mail, contacts, calendars, apps, books, music and photos.

A new single sign-on feature in iOS 5, with a secure API for application developers, will streamline secure interactions between and among applications. An app can ask iOS for a user’s Twitter account password, and the user can decide whether to grant that application access. This can be seen in the tighter, smoother iOS integration with Twitter: An iPhone user can snap a photo with the phone, tap an action button, then tap “Tweet,” for example. Users don’t need to re-log in for every app.

So what will the new iPhone model do that the existing ones, upgraded to iOS 5, can’t?

That remains to be seen, but according to some observers, Apple has given a big hint in the invitations it sent out last week to select journalists and bloggers: “Let’s talk iPhone,” read the invitation.

Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac has an extensive story, which seems clearly based on details leaked by sources in Apple, about a new iOS software program called “Assistant.” Assistant lets you verbally tell iPhone 5 what to do, such as schedule an appointment or find a store: the phone processes the speech and Assistant interacts with an array of systems and application software to get it done. it can even ask you questions, such as which email address or phone number to use to contact someone.

Speculation about some kind of major improvement to Apple’s 2009 Voice Control feature has been percolating for a year, since Apple acquired a startup called Siri, for example in the coverage by VentureBeat. Siri originally created a verbal assistant for the iPhone, using speech technology licensed from Nuance. Reviews were favorable, but it was still constrained.

Apple and Siri seem to have extended the core technology across the new iPhone, creating a rich, flexible, and powerful voice interface. To do this will require the processing power of the dual-core A5 and additional memory.

Apple Fall 2011: Worst Case Scenario (for Apple’s Competitors) – SlashGear

In my last column, I discussed what I consider a fairly plausible, if unsurprising, set of expectations for Apple this fall. I called it a Best Case Scenario (for Apple’s Competitors). Click through to read it, or if you need the Cliff’s Notes version, that would be:

1. the existing iPhone 4 remains on the market or is replaced with an 8 GB version.2. Apple introduces the iPhone 5 with a larger display, dual core processor, and camera spec bump. and it’s thinner.3. Apple updates the iPod line with new colors, tweaked designs, and a smaller nano that is designed to work well as a watch.

If the above scenario is not guaranteed, it is at least extremely plausible. it would also be considered a failure by the press, despite the fact that the launch would be followed by gonzo sales. It’s the iPhone 4, the best selling phone in the world, only with better hardware and software. What could be better? Actually… there are reasons to believe that Apple could deliver more than that. I call the following speculation the worst Case Scenario (for Apple’s Competitors):

Sprint and T-Mobile could get their own iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 devices. it is not unusual outside the U.S. for Apple to sell the iPhone through several carriers, and there is no telling what type of exclusivity arrangements Apple has with AT&T and Verizon Wireless or how long they last. A Sprint iPhone could be virtually identical to today’s Verizon Wireless version. A T-Mobile iPhone would require different frequencies than today’s AT&T version, but Apple might be building one of those anyway in case the DoJ allows the acquisition to proceed. the iPhone is the best selling phone at both AT&T and Verizon Wireless. it would be very disruptive to Samsung, HTC, LG, and Kyocera Sanyo if it were to show up at Sprint or T-Mobile.

If Apple sticks with HSPA+ and CDMA/EV-DO iPhones, Apple could be at a significant disadvantage in terms of network speed. Verizon Wireless has nearly half its network lit up with LTE already, and AT&T is starting its own LTE rollout. Conventional wisdom is that Apple will not launch an LTE iPhone until the chipsets are smaller and more efficient. Apple launched the original iPhone without 3G and fared quite well; it may choose to follow the same approach today. However, Apple has delayed the iPhone launch from its usual late June timeframe to September or October. it is certainly possible that it did so to wait for second generation LTE chipsets.

If Apple does go with LTE in this next round of iPhones, it would not only ruin the one area where competitors can claim a real-world performance advantage, Apple could leap ahead on the technology’s Achilles heel: battery life. Apple can tightly tie its hardware to the OS and manage the usage of the modem. For example, the iPhone might only turn on LTE when the OS is downloading large files or a large number of files where the benefits of added speed and lower latency offset the battery life hit, and then turn it off immediately afterwards – all without any user interaction or knowledge. Things will simply be faster, without a big drain on the battery. this is the sort of thing RIM does with the BlackBerry’s 2G and 3G radios, but is something that could be impossible for Android vendors to match. (Google could counter by building heavily hardware-specific versions of Android for Motorola phones, but that would open up a whole can of worms with its other Android licensees.)

Apple could use some new materials and accompanying manufacturing technique that the competition then needs to scramble to reverse-engineer.

Attacking a slightly different segment of the market, Apple could extend AirPlay to enable console-quality games for the iPhone and iPad that allow the phone or tablet to be the controller, and the TV (via a $99 Apple TV) to be the game console. this would give consumers another reason to buy an iDevice and would give a huge boost to Apple TV, potentially taking off the “hobby” label Steve Jobs has given it.

Apple often takes existing technology and finds a way to make it useful for consumers. NFC has been “just around the corner” for the past ten years. Google is off to a decent start with Wallet and Offers, but the installed base of Android phones with NFC is pitiful. Apple could put an NFC chip in each iPhone and within a quarter or two there would be 20 million (or more) NFC-enabled devices in consumers’ hands. Apple would almost certainly launch corresponding developer tools and merchant terminals to complete the loop.

iPad Pro?

Apple’s iPad is dominating the tablet market, and most of the competition’s high profile launches have turned into high profile flops. At some point Apple is certain to upgrade the display on the iPad to something more retina-friendly, and further distance itself from the competition. Could that point be soon?

One more Thing

“The single most disruptive thing Apple could do would be to launch a mid-tier iPhone with an unsubsidized price under $300”

The single most disruptive thing Apple could do would be to launch a mid-tier iPhone with an unsubsidized price under $300. Nokia, Samsung, RIM, and Sony Ericsson sell a lot of smartphones in the $250 – $400 range. this price point serves both as a high end device in emerging markets and a mid-tier device in developed markets, particularly those where the majority of phones are sold without contracts and subsidies. (Nokia used to completely dominate entry level smartphones but has been undercut lately by Android phones from Huawei and ZTE). Apple is doing exceptionally well selling the iPhone, but there are large parts of the world where a $700 phone is too expensive, regardless of its attributes or desirability. A sub-$300 iPhone would end up free in the U.S. with a two year contract, or it could be sold partially subsidized by regional prepaid carriers who would use it as a way to compete with their national, iPhone selling rivals, on a level playing field.

Outside the U.S. it would be even more dangerous. RIM is struggling in North America, but its BlackBerry Curve sales in parts of Europe are soaring thanks to BlackBerry Connect. A sub-$300 iPhone with iMessage would be devastating to RIM. if China Mobile had a budget iPhone to offer, it would sell tens of millions of units, making life very difficult for Nokia, Samsung, LG, Huawei, ZTE, and Dell.

How likely is a budget iPhone from Apple? Almost assured, although the timing is unknown. Cost-reducing the iPhone is not trivial, and the end product will still have to be an iPhone in terms of design, capabilities, apps, and content. However, this should not be impossible for a Tim Cook-led Apple. after all, Apple profitably sells the iPod touch for $229, and that is essentially an iPhone 4 without WWAN voice or data. A lower cost iPhone could greatly expand Apple’s addressable market, and it would give the competition fits.

FAQ: Hello, iPhone 4S

Apple shredded prognosticators’ reputations yesterday — it’ll be the iPhone 5, it’ll have a bigger screen, it’ll be only on Sprint — when the company finally pulled off the wraps covering the first new iPhone in 16 months.

But the iPhone 4S … really?

So the name doesn’t roll off the tongue — even less so than 2009’s 3GS — and some commentators have been nearly livid in their disappointment. But now at least everyone knows what they’re dealing with.

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, let’s recap with a quick Q&A.

When can I get one? Friday, Oct. 14. That’s the on-sale day — and for online and phone pre-orders via Apple, also the delivery and pick-up day — for the iPhone 4S.

Apple will open its retail stores at 8 a.m. local time. Although the three U.S. carriers will also begin selling phones Oct. 14 in their stores, they have not yet announced door-open schedules.

Can I pre-order? yes. Apple and its carrier partners will begin taking pre-orders, all presumably via both their websites and by phone, this Friday, Oct. 7.

But no word on the time of day they’ll open the virtual doors.

What’s it going to cost me? If you’re eligible for the subsidized prices — either your existing contract is up or nearly so, or you’re switching carriers — the 4S will run you $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB) or $399 (64GB).

That last one, by the way, is the most expensive iPhone since Apple trotted out the original in 2007 at the unbelievable prices of $499 for a measly 4GB and a whopping $599 for the not-much-better 8GB. For those with short memories, Apple saw the error of its pricing ways a few months later, then ditched the 4GB model and cut the price of the 8GB to $399.

Who do I talk to to find out if I can get the 4S at the subsidized price? Your current mobile carrier. Apple’s website will steer you to AT&T’s and Verizon’s eligibility calculators — Sprint’s isn’t included yet — or you can go directly to your carrier’s site. Or do it the old-fashioned way by calling.

I just got an iPhone 4 a few months ago, so there’s no chance I’ll qualify for the subsidized price. how much for the 4S for me? A lot.

A quick check of one AT&T account returned with out-of-contract prices of $449 (16GB), $549 (32GB) and $649 (64GB). Yikes. A Verizon account, however, pegged the prices at $649 (16GB), $749 (32GB) and $849 (64GB). Double yikes.

What does the iPhone 4S look like? Identical, or virtually so, to the iPhone 4. The exterior dimensions are the same, although the new model is heavier by 3 grams, or about one-tenth of an ounce.

Apple reinforced the similarity between the two models by saying that “all iPhone 4 accessories work with iPhone 4S,” which we take to mean that cases for the older smartphone will fit the newer, including the holes for the cameras.

It’s not the iPhone 5, but does the iPhone 4S have enough cool new features for people to make the switch? Keith Shaw and Computerworld’s Ken Mingis discuss some of today’s Apple announcements.

What’s different inside? we won’t know for sure until tear-down artists like IHS iSuppli get their hands on one. Some hardware changes, however, are clear: The iPhone 4S is powered by the dual-core A5 — not the iPhone 4’s single-core A4 — packs an 8-megapixel camera (as opposed to the iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel camera) and supports Bluetooth 4.0.

I think I’ll pass on the iPhone 4S. Anything for me? iOS 5.

Apple’s launching the upgrade Oct. 12 — no info on what time of the day it will hit the company’s download servers — for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners.

Among the new features for everyone are PC Free — the wire-free sync and updating that cuts iOS’ ties to Macs and PCs — in-app notifications and the new iMessage alternative to email or SMS texts.

Who gets the iPhone 4S first? Apple will launch the new iPhone in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K. on Oct. 14. Twenty-two other countries — a list is near the bottom of this page — will follow on Oct. 28.

None of the countries in what Apple calls its “Greater China” market — the People’s Republic, Hong Kong and Taiwan — are on the list of 22. That’s interesting because Apple has touted the strong contribution that region has made to its bottom line, and several analysts expected the new phone to show up there fast.

But Apple’s head marketing man, Philip Schiller, did say Tuesday that the iPhone 4S would be available in over 70 countries total by the end of the year.

Siri sounds slick. will it run on my iPhone? only if yours is an iPhone 4S.

Several analysts highlighted Siri, the new voice control app based on a $200 million technology purchase last year, as one of the stellar features of the new phone, and one way that Apple is separating the new from the old.

Tuesday, Apple execs talked about Siri only in connection with the iPhone 4S, and the company tucked phrases like “iPhone 4S also introduces Siri, an intelligent assistant…” and “Siri will be available in beta on iPhone 4S” into its press release.

The assumption is that Siri requires the faster processor of the iPhone 4S — an A5 system-on-a-chip (SoC), like the one inside the iPad 2 — and perhaps more system memory than the 512MB available to the iPhone 4.

(It’s not confirmed that the iPhone 4S has 1GB of system memory, but reports to that end circulated prior to Tuesday’s announcement.)

I’m going with Verizon … which version of the iPhone 4S should I get? as the Rev. Jesse Jackson famously said in a 1984 Saturday Night Live skit, “The question is moot!”

Unlike the iPhone 4, which came in two flavors, the 2010 model suitable for GSM networks like AT&T’s and the February 2011 version for CDMA networks (such as Verizon), the new smartphone is an all-in-one that works on both.

The move makes things simpler for consumers, but more importantly, said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi, “It really optimizes Apple’s economies of scale.”

And we all want to optimize that … right?

No 4G, or LTE support? Nope.

Expectations that Apple would shift to the new faster network standard — AT&T and Verizon have been rolling it out in the U.S. — had fallen in the weeks leading up to the unveiling, but most of the news stories and blogs expressing disappointment with the iPhone 4S had the LTE omission on their short list.

Wait until next year, or even 2013, said iSuppli analysts Tuesday. “IHS continues to expect that Apple will introduce an LTE-capable iPhone 5 when an affordable chipset solution allowing a thinner form factor is available,” the firm said in a research note after the iPhone 4S intro. “The iPhone 5 most likely will arrive in late 2012, or in mid-2013.”

What’s the battery life? Slightly better, and somewhat worse, than the iPhone 4, Apple claimed.

Apple rated 3G talk time at eight hours, an hour longer than the iPhone 4, but said standby time for the new model will be 200 hours, down from 300 hours on the older unit. Using Wi-Fi to browse the Internet will supposedly exhaust the iPhone 4S’ battery in nine hours, an hour quicker than on the iPhone 4.

My wallet’s thinner this year than last, but I still want an iPhone … any options for me? As usual, Apple dropped the price of last year’s model — the iPhone 4 — to $99, and cut the storage space in half along the way to 8GB.

New this time around, however, is the retention of a two-year-old device, 2009’s iPhone 3GS, which will be free. Well, not really free: Like any subsidized iPhone, buyers have to sign a two-year contract with a carrier. And it’s the monthly fees that are budget busters, not really the hardware.

But Gartner’s Milanesi thinks that the free iPhone 3GS may signal some new opportunities for less-expensive plans. rather than consider the free iPhone a sop to developing markets, she said, it may actually play best in “the more mature markets, like the U.S., in the pre-paid [mobile] market.”
