Chomp Releases New Version of iPhone App Search That Sets Visual and Feature Standards

Press Release Source: Chomp on Tuesday September 27, 2011, 8:00 am EDT

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Chomp, the leading app search engine, today announced the launch of a completely redesigned version of Chomp for the iPhone. the Chomp iPhone app includes a new interface and a number of features that make it even faster to find apps – not limiting users to search based only on the name of an app – but giving them the ability to discover new titles based on what an app actually does.

“Over the last year, we’ve conducted multiple focus groups and solicited input from our users,” said Ben Keighran, CEO and co-founder of Chomp. “Based on their input and what we’ve learned during our time on the market we decided to take another leap forward. We didn’t limit ourselves to existing best practices or what we’d invested in our previous interface design.”

the newly designed home screen includes a prominent search box that automatically begins displaying search suggestions from the moment the first letter is typed, allowing for rapid results and an opportunity to discover new apps. once a search word or term is entered, large app cards are displayed, providing the most relevant apps for that search term. the user simply flips through the app cards to find the perfect app based on what they want to do. each app card includes the app name, price, review rating and a Get it button taking them to the exact page in the app store where they can download the app.

the home screen also includes the top ten suggested search terms as determined by what is actively trending, e.g., chat, fashion, romantic, money and free TV shows, while displaying preview icons of the top apps for each category.

Additionally, five user-recommended topic tiles are displayed on the home screen, giving users the ability to quickly and easily explore and discover new apps in the following categories: Free apps of the day displays apps that have recently become free; the Top 100 displays the top 100 apps in the iTunes store based on Chomp’s proprietary ranking system; the New apps features recently released apps organized by popularity; on sale displays apps that have been marked down in price; and Surprise me, which randomly selects apps.

And only Chomp makes discovering new apps easier with the new “Related Searches” feature. right above the app search results tiles, related search terms are now displayed. with one click users are taken down another discovery path. Additional features from the newest version also include a button on the home screen for one click Twitter and Facebook sign-in, which makes sharing app reviews easier than ever.

the new Chomp iPhone app is available for download at Chomp.com and iTunes.

About Chomp, Inc.

Founded in 2009 by Ben Keighran and Cathy Edwards, Chomp, Inc. is the only company to enable app search based on what an app actually does. One billion apps are being downloaded every month. as the number of apps explodes, it’s become difficult for users to find the perfect app for what they want to do. Chomp’s patent-pending algorithm is able to understand what an app does and what a user wants and then makes the best match. Chomp also allows developers to effectively integrate app search into their content. Chomp powers search for a wide range of partners including Verizon, Carphone Warehouse, Blekko, 148Apps.com and @aplusk. the company is funded by leading Silicon Valley investors, including Ron Conway, BlueRun Ventures as well as a number of ex-Google angel investors. the company is based in San Francisco, CA and can be found at chomp.com

Financing is an integral part of the home-buying process and whether home shoppers are at the beginning, middle or end of the process, mortgage information is essential. this integration gives Zillow iPhone App users easy access to research, shop for and compare mortgages, without ever leaving the app they use to search for homes.

“At Zillow, a significant part of our usage now comes from mobile – home shoppers are viewing more than 2.5 million homes on Zillow every day from a mobile device, which equates to 28 homes every second,” said Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff. “Real estate is inherently mobile, and our goal is to provide people with information about homes – and home financing – whenever and wherever they need it.”

Home shoppers use the Zillow iPhone App to search for and find homes, and connect with local real estate agents. with the integration of Zillow Mortgage Marketplace, home shoppers now have instant access to important financial information and tools whenever they need it during the home-shopping process – whether they are standing in the living room of their dream home for sale, or getting ready to make an offer.

in addition to integration with the core Zillow iPhone App, Zillow Mortgage Marketplace also operates a standalone app. The Zillow Mortgage Marketplace App includes the following, which now are also available within the Zillow iPhone App:

The Payment Calculator helps consumers estimate what their monthly payment will look like for a particular home that interests them.

The Affordability Calculator helps shoppers narrow their home search to those within a specific price range.

The mortgage shopping experience enables users to request and receive personalized loan quotes, read lender reviews, and connect with a lender to start the pre-approval process with one tap of their finger.

Other updates to the Zillow iPhone App include faster map performance, and ease-of-use improvements in saving searches, filtering, and managing saved searches. The new Zillow iPhone App home screen makes it easier to access favorites, saved searches and mortgage calculators.

The Zillow iPhone App and Zillow Mortgage Marketplace Apps are available for download in the App Store under the Lifestyle and Finance categories, respectively.

Deceptive appearances

Well, here’s a tough little cookie — this year’s “Let’s talk iPhone” event wasn’t quite as eventful as everyone had anticipated it to be, and I say this not because it’s been (massively) overshadowed by the demise of the one of the greatest visionaries, but because, well, we didn’t get the iPhone 5.

The rumour mills had been rife with expectations of a radical upgrade to the iPhone 4, especially since the annual iPhone event usually held in June didn’t really happen. Apple instead decided to move the new iPhone announcement to their October iPod unveiling. People expected something big out of this. Bluntly put, it really wasn’t meant to be. but here’s what came out of it.

There’s a new iPhone on the block, and it’s been christened the 4S. Now, we don’t really know what the ‘S’ stands for, but I think the best description wo-uld be ‘subtle’. there really isn’t much else to it. for starters, it looks exactly the same as its old brother. the difference is all on the inside.

Feast your eyes on these specs. There’s the weirdly named Siri Assistant, a voice-controlled assistant you can call up anytime by holding down the home button for a few seconds. you can ask it the weather, time, directions, schedule a meeting on your calendar, reply to messages, play a song from iTunes, or ask any factual question via Wolfram Alpha. Pretty neat if it actually works, no?

Yeah so, now that you know about it, should you buy it? well, if you’re already in possession of an iPhone 4, we’d really tell you to hold on to your money. with the mild upgrade here, chances are a really awesome iPhone 5 is in the works. but if you’re looking for a smartphone that’s worth your money, or if you’re in the market for an iPhone, there’s no doubt about it. This is the one to get.

The Raw Hardware* Dual-core A5 processor (power efficient, up to two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics.)* 1GB of RAM (as opposed to 512 MB on the iPhone 4.)* Dual CDMA/GSM chip for different networks (but sorry, dual SIM junkies, you’ll still have to wait.)* “Slightly longer” battery life.* Faster wireless data speeds via HSDPA (read: technology too advanced for Indian users.)

The Camera* the you-can’t-believe-it’s-on-a-phone camera (except you can. It’s 8 megapixels. Big deal!)* Video recording in 1080p HD.* All new optics (better photos in low-light.)

The Software* iOS 5 (the OS you’ll get on your iPhone 4 and iPod touch anyway, starting October 12.)* iCloud (stores your music, photos, apps, mail, contacts, calendars, documents and more. and wirelessly pushes them to all your (Apple) devices.)

Verizon and Sprint iPhone 4S and the limitations of CDMA

iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to have both Verizon and Sprint CDMA versions available alongside the AT&T GSM version. CDMA is famous for its rock solid reliability and call quality and now that iPhone 4S is a world phone, it can even roam on international GSM network. however, CDMA brings with it some downsides as well, including lack of simultaneous voice and data over 3G, subtle quirks to SMS, and greatly reduced conference call options.

None of these are unique to iPhone 4S on Verizon or Sprint, but they’re something to keep in mind if you’re thinking of switching to one of those networks now that they have iPhone 4S.

So here’s the deal.

There are some great advantages to CDMA. It tends to need less towers to cover greater areas so CDMA networks typically have better reception in more places. this also means they tend to sound better, more often for voice calls. if you use your iPhone as a phone — who knew? — and that’s the most important thing to you, or if Verizon or Sprint provide the only reliable coverage in your area, than case closed.

If cost is a factor, well we’ve already put together that breakdown for you.

  • AT&T vs. Verizon vs. Sprint: which iPhone 4S should you choose?

But if you want to know what you’re getting into when it comes to the data and conference calling tradeoffs, there are several things to consider.

Note: We’ll be using a lot of tech terms, so see our wireless networking guide for more on what all these acronyms mean.

Slower 3G data

iPhone 4S on AT&T and other GSM networks supports 14.4 Mbps HSPA+ download speeds. Depending on where you live, you may never get anywhere near that speed in the real world, but the potential is there.

No simultaneous voice and data

Verizon and Sprint’s EV-DO Rev. a network does not support simultaneous voice and data the way HSPA and HSPA+ does for AT&T (and other GSM carriers).

That means if a call comes in while you’re using 3G data — surfing the web, Skyping, sharing your connection via personal hotspot — you can either ignore the call and continue using 3G data, or answer the call and effectively put your 3G data connection on “pause”. if you’re on a call you won’t receive email or push notifications and if you try to surf the web or download an app you’ll be informed you’re not connected to the 3G network. once the call ends, 3G data reconnects and you can start using the internet again.

If you’re on Wi-Fi as opposed to 3G data you can make calls and use data without a problem. It’s only 3G data that cuts out during calls.

Verizon and Sprint have chosen not to roll out EV-DO Rev. B, which does support simultaneous data in favor of more quickly deploying a 4G LTE network (currently a hybrid CDMA-voice with LTE-data network, in the future a Voice over LTE network) and WiMax with LTE to follow, respectively. there are some phones that support Voice over Rev a (VoRA) aka SVDO which will allow for simultaneous voice and data on CDMA/EV-DO phones, but not the Verizon or Sprint iPhone. (See The Cell Phone Junky for more on the technology.)

SMS/Text splitting

SMS/Text messages are limited to 160 characters. On AT&T and other GSM iPhones, if a message exceeds 160 characters it will still be shown as a single message to both the sender and receiver. On Verizon once an SMS hits 160 characters, any additional text is split off into a second message, after 320, a third message, etc. the same content is still delivered, it’s just not presented as nicely. (In some cases the message parts might even appear out of order which is even more annoying.) some users claim to seldom if ever experience this problem in the real world, others say it happens often enough to annoy them.

Limited conference calling

Verizon and Sprint’s CDMA networks only supports “3 way calling” so you can only enter into a conference call with up to 2 other people (3 including yourself) at the same time. It doesn’t matter if iPhone can handle more, CSMA networks and hence the Verizon and Sprint iPhone is limited to 3-way calling.

Likewise, handling conference calls is also more challenging on the CDMA iPhones since you can’t take one party “private” or hang up on one caller while keeping the other active. You can only hang up on all of them at once.

Apple provides the following diagram in their knowledge base:

The network

So yes, overall there are a lot of limitations to the way CDMA handles voice. however, if Verizon or Sprint has great coverage in your area, you’re on Wi-Fi when you want to talk and surf, split SMS/Text messages rarely happen or don’t bother you, and agile conference calling isn’t a must-have business feature for your iPhone, you may not care.

Otherwise it’s a compromise. Decide what’s most important to you and which carrier best provides it. if anything is a deal-breaker, then that makes your choice much simpler.

Altec Lansing iMT630 Classic

Altec Lansing’s latest portable iPod speaker dock, the iMT630 Classic, features a very easy-to-pack, stylish design. Its small frame is comparable to the more expensive Editors’ choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95 direct, 4 stars), but its audio output is more comparable to—and slightly better than—the Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515 ($99.99, 3.5 stars). The best thing the iMT630 ($149.95 direct) has going for it is clever design—a built-in kickstand snaps shut to hide a magnetic remote control compartment, and the included remote offers fairly extensive iPod/iPhone menu navigation. It’s battery powered so you can take it anywhere, but you can’t pair the iMT630 with your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Android phone via Bluetooth like some other portable systems, and you’ll hear some distortion on deep bass tracks. If portability is your number one priority, however, the iMT630 offers a quality audio experience at reasonable volume levels.

Design Somewhat triangular from a side view and rectangular from the front, the Altec Lansing iMT630 Classic comes in all black, with glossy plastic trim along the side panels and a plastic, honeycomb-like design for the front panel’s speaker grille. At the bottom of the front panel, the retractable iPod dock can be pressed in when not in use, so that the contour of the front panel is flat. The portable speaker measures 5.1 by 12.5 by 1.5-inches and weighs 1.3 pounds. There are two other versions, which come with red or dark blue trim instead of black, and have the slightly different model name of iMT630 Sport. four buttons sit to the left of the top panel: Power, Volume Up, Volume down, and Source (for choosing between a docked iPod or iPhone and the Aux input). The back panel has a snap-out kickstand that hides a magnetic remote control storage space, making an otherwise easy-to-lose remote easier to keep track of. The kickstand also covers the power connection for the included power adapter, and a 3.5mm Aux input.

The included remote control is tiny, measuring about 3.7 by 1.2 by 0.5-inches. Its simple black plastic front panel unfortunately uses the annoying-to-press membrane buttons commonly found on cheap remotes, but in this price range, that’s to be expected. The remote is redeemed by having just about every control you’d need: Power, Mute, Source, Track Forward/Backward, Volume Up/Down, Menu Up, Menu down, and Menu, Select, and four EQ settings for Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, and Altec EQ. for a cheap remote, the iMT630’s is solid, and easy to stow away when not in use.

Performance While it is predictable that the iMT630’s small frame and 2-inch drivers cannot handle deep bass at high volumes, the price should reflect that. If the dock were, say, $100, this would be less of an issue. At $150, however, we expect a little more power from a speaker system. Regardless, when it’s not playing the Knife’s “silent Shout,” which features deep bass that distorts the speakers heavily, the iMT630 offers some quality audio performance. On tracks with more moderate bass, like an acoustic track from Bill Callahan, or a modern classical track, like John Adams’ “The Chairman Dances,” the speaker unit is able to get to maximum volume without a shred of distortion, and the max volume level is impressive given the iMT630’s modest frame. These volume levels should certainly suffice for a hotel room or picnic, and could power an impromptu party in a pinch—just don’t expect any real low-end. The overall response seems focused on the mid frequencies, which helps bring out bass lines in rock songs (not deep bass frequencies, mind you, but the actual string instrument), as well as some mid-sized percussion. The clarity of the high frequencies is also a strength—the iMT630 is articulate without being overly bright. Obviously, bass fiends should look elsewhere for a portable system. Bose’s SoundLink is far more pricey, but it offers laudable bass and wireless streaming in an even smaller design. The bass response of the Logitech Wireless Boombox ($149.99, 3.5 stars), which is priced identically to the iMT630, is far more substantial than the iMT630’s, but the system is much larger and less easy to tote around—and none of the portable systems mentioned have enough low end to compete with even a modest 2.1 system, or a larger dock system like the Beatbox from Dr. Dre by Monster ($449.95, 4 stars).

Like most Altec Lansing iPod docks of the past couple years, the iMT630 is compatible with free, Altec-designed apps. One of them, Music Mood EQ, allows you to adjust the audio with a seven band graphic EQ—or just stick with some genre presets, like Rock or Pop. The other, Alarm Rock, turns your speaker dock into an alarm clock—your iPod or iPhone displays the time and the app comes with standard alarm clock features, like Snooze. it isn’t necessary, however, to use any app with the system. The remote control does a laudable job of navigating the iPod menu system—it works mostly intuitively, and allows you to switch between Artist, Song, Album, and other sub-menus to explore your music however you wish.

Altec Lansing rates the rechargeable battery’s life at about 7 hours on a full charge, but this depends on how loud you are playing the unit—lower volumes will obviously yield better battery lives than higher volume levels.

Logitech’s Wireless Speaker Z515, like the iMT630, has some distortion issues, while the wireless Logitech Wireless Boombox has almost no distortion issues but suffers from occasional Bluetooth audio artifacts. Despite the near identical prices, it’s not a stretch to imagine some people preferring the Altec Lansing iMT630 over the better-sounding, wireless-streaming Logitech Wireless Boombox based on portability alone. The iMT630 is much more compact and easier to throw in a bag than Logitech’s oblong speaker. The trade-off is clearly size versus audio performance, but if you need more room in your luggage, the iMT630 gets plenty loud without distorting—unless you are listening to genres with deep bass, like hip hop and electronic music. in that case, you’re better off checking out the Logitech Wireless Boombox and packing less clothes.

In a clear sign of the influence consumer mobile devices are having in the enterprise Oracle has flagged that it plans to make available iPad- and Android-compatible versions of its traditional ERP and CRM suites as well as its latest Fusion apps.

Speaking at Oracle OpenWorld 2011 in San Francisco, Steve Miranda, SVP, Oracle Applications Development said mobility was a major theme in Oracle’s application strategy.

“Our strategy in mobile is two-fold: first, it is a set of mobile/telephone device applications [in] beta and a set of iPad applications. I think just about every product in the suite has either an iPad or smartphone/mobile device [version], including the Fusion applications,” Madden said.

“In addition our investment in terms of mobile technology is a common-goal technology platform that is independent and will take advantage of HTML 5 … and will not only run iPad but Android devices…”

Jon Schiff, VP and General Manager, JD Edwards World, and Anthony Lye, Senior Vice President, Oracle CRM On Demand, also signaled that mobility was a part of their individual software strategies.

“[Siebel] leverages a lot of the Oracle technology and one of the big areas is around mobile,” Oracle’s Lye said. “So those in resources, those in sales and service are increasingly using their smartphones and now their iPad.

“One of the things we have announced this week is a piece of middleware which allows any of our Siebel customers or CRM on Demand customers to connect their applications through to their iPad based applications.”

“We feel very strongly that people are looking to mobilise ERP as well so we now have full support for the EnterpriseOne product on the iPad,” JD Ewards’ Schiff said. “We have specific gestures for ERP to make it easy so you don’t have to do a bunch of typing on the iPad.

Oracle customer Australian Financial Group (AFG) executive director, Malcolm Watkins, said mobility was an essential part of the white label CRM business it offers its insurance and third party broking firms.

“Mobility is very much one of our key focuses,” he said. “…We were already running our own CRM on Demand and now the next step is to take it to the iPad.

“A broker needs to work faster and more efficiently to be able to email [their customers] a password and a log in, start collecting information on a customer, suck it into their [CRM] system, and flick it over to their iPad so [the broker] can sit down with a customer over the iPad, validate the information they are given, then transfer that back to CRM and have it reflected on their iPhones so that when they are on the road they don’t have to log back in. “Ultimately where we want to be in the first quarter of next year is having a broker apps so a broker can [access our CRM system]… it’s all about this Gen Y connectivity. Mobility is a huge focus for us.”

Oracle partner and customer, Presence of IT’s Oracle practice manager, Duane Thompson, said mobility was also important in managing its base of consultants.

“Being able to get people to do transactions on the fly – apply for annual leave, look at their calendars, or have managers look at their calendars – and to capture time – clocking on using your iPhone — are key,” he said.
