Plantronics Marque M155

The Marque M155 ($59 direct) is Plantronic’s most stylish Bluetooth headset to date. It’s super tiny, and so comfortable you may forget you’re even wearing it. Earpiece sound quality is solid, there’s A2DP streaming, and a free one-year basic subscription to Vocalyst, a hands-free subscription service that can read your text messages or run voice-activated Internet searches. So why the average rating? Poor noise reduction. The Marque may be stylish and comfortable, but if you’re outside, the person you’re calling may not be able to hear you.

Design, Fit, Call Quality, and Noise SuppressionThe Marque M155 sure is chic. made of shiny black plastic, with a silver band that separates the front from the back, it looks like it should come as a companion accessory to the iPhone 4 ($199.99-$299.99, 4 stars). There’s a power switch on the bottom headset, a volume control button on the top, and a multi-function call button on the outside.

Fitting the Marque was a snap. The headset comes with three different sizes of clear eartips, but the default tip fit me just fine. in fact, the Marque is so light and comfortable that I sometimes forgot I was even wearing it. it stayed put just fine, too; it never felt like it was going to fall out of my ear, or even come a bit loose after walking for a few blocks throughout the city.

For this review, I paired the Marque with a Verizon Apple iPhone 4 and a Motorola Droid Bionic ($299.99, 4.5 stars). The pairing process went smoothly for both phones. in fact, the first time you turn it on, the Marque walks you through a voice-guided pairing process for iPhone and Android devices, which is great for first-time users. But pairing is still simple without the walkthrough; just hold down the Call button for a few seconds, until the light on the inside of the Marque begins to flash red and white, which indicated that you’re in pairing mode.

Once connected, you have limited volume control using the button on top of the headset. I found it easiest to leave the volume turned up on the Marque, and to control it on whatever device I was connected to. in the earpiece, sound quality was quite good. Voice calls sounded clear and natural, with plenty of volume for indoor or outdoor use. Streaming A2DP content sounded great too—rich and full of bass.

On the other end, transmission quality was average for calls made indoors. Voices would sometimes clip and sound a touch robotic, though always understandable. But calls made outside are another story. The Marque has seemingly no background noise suppression, which makes it easy for any background noise to completely drown out the sound of your voice. it was so bad that just the sound of some cars passing while standing outside on a city street rendered my voice nearly inaudible.

If you intend to use the Marque indoors, or in a car with the windows down and the radio off, it’s a solid Bluetooth headset. But if you plan to use it outdoors, in a car with an open window, or anywhere else that has noise in the background, you should keep looking.

Other Features and ConclusionsYou can answer a call on the Marque by saying “Answer,” rather than tapping the headset’s Call button, which is especially helpful if you’re driving. There’s also a companion app currently available in the Apple App Store, with an Android app expected to hit the Android Market within a week.

The app adds a number of useful features, like Sound Check, which you can use to hear how your transmission quality sounds from a particular room, or to record a note that can be sent via email. There’s also a pairing guide to get you started, some audio-based games, and a link to download Vocalyst.

Vocalyst service is available in two tiers. The Marque comes with one free year of Vocalyst Basic, which costs $2.49 per month or $24.99 per year after that. it offers voice e-mail, news, reminders, and weather. it also allows you to record audio clips that can be automatically uploaded to your Facebook account.

Vocalyst Pro costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. it converts your voice messages to text and sends text messages. it also allows you to speak updates it will then transcribe to text and automatically post to your Facebook or Twitter accounts. these are useful features, to be certain, but Google Voice offers voice-to-text conversions for free, and Android already offer voice-activated searches, not to mention Bing and a number of other apps.

If you have an iPhone, the Marque features a battery life indicator next to the iPhone’s battery icon. Battery life was on the short side of average, at 4 hours and 54 minutes.

The Plantronics Marque M155 is tiny, comfortable, stylish, and has some great earpiece sound quality. if it weren’t for the noise suppression issue, this would be a top pick among midrange Bluetooth headsets. As it stands, the Samsung HM6450 ($99, 4 stars) is a better buy, thanks to its improved outdoor transmission quality. And while it lists for $99, you can pick one up for closer to $50, which puts it right in line with the Marque. if you’re looking for a Bluetooth headset that you can truly use anywhere, the Jawbone Era ($129.99, 4.5 stars) can’t be beat for noise suppression, and the Jawbone Icon ($99.99, 4 stars) is a close second, for $30 less than the Era.

Kindle Fire vs. iPad: 5 Reasons Why Amazon’s Tablet Is No iPad Killer

Amazon’s Kindle fire was named a potential iPad killer when it was just a vague rumor, but based on the price and specs, Amazon’s entry into the tablet world may have a different target in mind.

The Kindle fire is impressive. At $199 and including a 7″ IPS full color touchscreen, a dual-core processor and a brand new interface running on top of Google’s Android operating system, it’s a sure bet that the Kindle fire will fair much better than other Android-based tablets. But while it will become the most popular Android tablet, don’t expect it to make a dent in iPad sales.

The Kindle fire lacks the iPad’s app ecosystem

The same thing working against the other Android tablets is working against the Kindle fire. the iPad’s success was predicated on a healthy app store that built up for years around the iPhone. While Android boasts a lot of apps, it simply doesn’t have the quality or the vast variety found in Apple’s App Store.

Amazon hopes to change this with their own Amazon Appstore, which puts apps through similar quality control, but until now, there’s been very little reason for Android users to even care about Amazon’s Appstore.

Don’t expect to get work done, play games, make music or watch on your TV

The Kindle fire is designed as a media consumption device, which means it will be great at reading books, watching video and browsing the web. But the iPad is much more than just a device for watching Netflix and listening to Pandora. Apple’s iWork suite brings word processing, spreadsheets and presentations to the iPad, and a growing number of businesses are finding ways to introduce the iPad into the workplace.

At home, the iPad makes a great gaming device. But don’t expect to fill up the Kindle fire with games like Dungeon Hunter 2. the 540 MB it takes to store one of the best RPGs on the iPad will take a huge chunk out of the rather limiting 8 GB in storage offered by the Kindle fire. Amazon’s tablet might be fine for Angry Birds, but once you get outside of casual games, it’s not going to light the gaming world on fire.

And there is so much more that the iPad can do that makes it such a “magical device”. Love music? Between Garage Band, which puts a studio full of instruments on your iPad, and cool accessories like iRig, which lets you plug your guitar into your iPad, Apple’s tablet can be a musician’s best friend. Tired of watching shows on a little screen? You can even connect your iPad to your TV and watch them on your 42″ screen.

Don’t leave home with it…

There are some devices that come with the mantra “don’t leave home without it.” But unless you are hitting the local coffee shop, don’t expect the Amazon Kindle fire to give you the same experience once you walk outside the door. Amazon’s “iPad Killer” does not have 3G, so you’ll find yourself somewhat limited when you don’t have access to Wi-Fi.

This is even more limiting when you consider Amazon is touting the cloud capabilities for the Kindle fire. One reason Amazon is giving for the limited storage space is the ability to store books, music and video on the cloud. But the cloud isn’t available without Internet access, which means anything you have on Amazon’s cloud storage won’t be available for that family road trip or when you are out camping.

What you see is what you get

The Amazon Kindle fire doesn’t have a lot of extras packed into it. Along with the limited storage space and the lack of 3G, the Kindle fire also lacks Bluetooth support and doesn’t have a camera. there was also no mention of a gyroscope, an accelerometer or all of the other little extras we’ve come to take for granted on our iPad.

In other words, don’t expect to jam out with wireless headphones. and if you are really into augmented reality, you’ll have to look for something different. Love racing games? Don’t expect to use it as a steering wheel.

The Amazon Kindle fire is aimed at the Barnes & Noble Nook

The biggest reason why the Kindle fire won’t make a dent in iPad sales is that it simply isn’t aimed at the iPad. It’s taking aim at the Barnes & Noble Nook. Both devices share similar features, such as 7″ color touchscreens and an Android-based operating system. they each lack 3G, Bluetooth and cameras. and they are both in the same price range, with the Nook Color’s $249 likely to decrease once the $199 Kindle fire is available.

Don’t get me wrong: Amazon’s Kindle fire is going to sell millions of units. the real question is how many of those buyers would have ever purchased an iPad. Amazon’s tablet is a great step for people who love their eReader but don’t want or need the “full tablet experience”. It’s also great for those who find the iPad’s $499 entry price to simply be too steep.

But the core iPad user? in the first few months after the iPad 2 went on sale, the $824 iPad 2 3G w/64 GB was the most popular model, beating out the entry level iPad 2 Wi-Fi w/16GB by a decent margin. this tells us two things: iPad’s core demographic find storage space and 3G capabilities important and they are willing to spend money to get the device they want.

The Amazon Kindle fire is going to be a hit. But its going to be a hit as an eReader with expanded media consumption capabilities rather than a full-fledged tablet.

In short, Amazon is aiming to sell us books, music and movies. Apple is aiming to replace the personal computer.

Far more often than not, application developers are constantly alert to recent industry changes and you would be stunned by their creativity, knowledge and profession. Fret not about the price as some companies do provide the customization services at a realistic charge.

Homework

1st, the most essential move is market analysis. you could possibly have an idea for a game or company app currently, but you have to have to drill down deep to truly generate a thing that will be effective.

The best issue to do, is to determine who your meant audience will be, what they will want from using your application, and glimpse at where by other’s with a related plan went wrong or were productive.

The smoothest way to do this is to scan through your proper category at the App retailer. see what folks are stating, download apps and check out them out to get a beneficial angle, and most importantly – go to discussion boards, blogs and standard websites for your market and get an comprehension of who will most advantage from your creation.

What Is Needed To make An iPhone App

The initially matter that you really should have is an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, depending on which you plan to create for. you must know the functionality of the solution itself.

You will also require an Apple laptop or computer, which is the easiest way to build a excellent app, though you can make an app on Windows as nicely.

It is also recommended that you have the most current version of the OS X working technique, to make certain that everything goes smoothly.

Software program you need To make An iPhone App

You will want to use the Xcode editor and Cocos2d, and all of this can be downloaded for no cost at Apple’s developer page with the SDK (Software program Enhancement Kit). you will also have to have the iPhone simulator to check and tweak your application as you go by way of the programming practice.

You will be operating with Goal C, which can be described as a cousin to C+.

Sony Tablet S Hands On (pics)

Last Wednesday I stopped by the Sony store at the Century City Mall here in West Los Angeles, where the company was holding a launch event for their Tablet S.

The Tablet S is one of two Sony tablets that the company plans on releasing.  The S sports a 9.4-inch touchscreen with 1280×800 resolution. While the version I played with was loaded with Android 3.1, Sony reps said they planned to ship it with 3.2 in the coming day or days.

Under the hood is a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 1Ghz processor.  It’s repelete with webcams on either side (5MP in the back, .3MP on the front for video chatting), Bluetooth, WiFi, a micro USB ports, an infrared port (more on that later), accelerometer and a 5000mAh battery.

To be clear, I’m not an Android guy.  In fact I’ve never been a huge fan of the OS, since I find it relatively clunky compared to the smoother, more refined Apple iOS.  However, I realize that both have their caveats and depending on what side of the tech aisle you sit on you’ll either agree or disagree with me.  Ultimately my point is that the Tablet S doesn’t function in quite the same smooth and sleek fashion as the iPad.  It felt a bit jerky as I swiped between screens and didn’t boast the same pin point touchscreen accuracy as found on Apple’s tablet.

Tablet S ports (mico-USH and headphone) – click to enlarge

Surfing the web however was a pleasurable experience despite the above mentioned shortcoming.  Even on the Sony store’s some what slow WiFi, pages loaded quickly in the browser.  GadgetReview appeared in full and didn’t show any glitches in terms of rendering.  I didn’t have a chance to check out a flash based site or video, but the Tablet S, thanks to Android 3.1 is fully compatible with both.

So I’ve owned and used the first iPad since day one of its release.  I’m also an iPhone user, so fair to say I’m familiar with the iOS’ UI.  And perhaps this is why I found the UI of Sony’s tablet so daunting.  There are a variety of home screens that can be customized to your liking – a core feature of Android.  However, they also offered a variety of short cut buttons or tabs that I’m still trying to make sense of.  There is also a set of short cut buttons to move back to the previous page and return to the home screen.  But, again, this judgement is derived from not more than 10 minutes of use.  So by no means is it a fair and balanced evaluation, but nonetheless I could foresee why the average consumer could be deterred from purchasing the device at first blush.

And now something about that infrared sensor.  It’s tech that has long expired in terms of handheld devices.  But in the case of the Tablet S it’s a welcome feature since it transforms the touchscreen device into a giant remote control for any infrared device, such as a TV, Blu-ray player or any other home theater equipement.  Take that Apple, though you could by an IR attachment for your iPad or iPhone an accomplish a comparable feat.

Tablet S power, volume and reset buttons – click to enlarge

The Tablet S is DLNA compatible.  This means you can stream content to any DLNA compatible products sans wires. Convenient if you’re hanging with a bunch of friends and you want to show off your home movies or pictures on the big screen.  Me and store rep tested this feature out.  While he was able to transfer the pic to a TV, the setup process to connect a compatible device isn’t as simple as I hoped.  In an ideal world the tablet would walk you through the setup process as soon as you engaged the feature.  Unfortunately, based on what I saw you have to located the necessary settings menu, add the device (much like pairing a new Bluetooth device) and then return to the media you’re trying to beam.  Is this a caveat of Android or Sony’s Tablet S?  I don’t know, but it seemed to contradict the intent of DLNA, which is simplicity.

So here’s the deal.  We’re trying to get our hands on a review unit.  James has reviewed a many Android devices so he’ll be able to provide a review in respect to other Android devices on the market.  You’ll never get me to buy an Tablet S, but I’m an Apple user to the bone.  I wrote this post on a Macbook Air while listening to tunes pumping through my iPad just after receiving a call on my iPhone.  Get the point?

The Tablet S is available now for $499.99 and $599.99.  It ships in two capacities, 16GB and 32GB respectively, and can be expanded thanks to an SD card slot.

Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 3GS on iOS 5 Baseband 5.16.05

Stuck on iOS 5 with baseband 5.16.05? Read on as this may be the solution for you.

First of all, please be aware that untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is not yet available and baseband 5.16.05 can’t be unlocked.

However, it is still possible to unlock your iPhone by updating the baseband to 6.15.00. This is an iPad baseband which can break your GPS. Read the risks here. if you don’t fancy 6.15.00 then these guys can replace baseband chip.

Did you read and understand all the risks? OK, let’s proceed.

Strangely, Apple is still signing iOS 4.1 which you need to downgrade your iPhone 3GS to. The reason why you need to downgrade to iOS 4.1 first is so that you can update your baseband to 6.15.00.

[Final warning: Proceed at your own risks!]

Steps:

1. Backup your contacts, photos, apps etc. Remove your SIM card.

2. Download iOS 4.1 firmware for iPhone 3GS.

3. Download redsn0w 0.9.8rc18 for Windows or Mac.

4. Download latest version of TinyUmbrella from here.

5. Remove iTunes 10.5 and install iTunes 10.4 or earlier.

5. Launch iTunes, connect your iPhone, hold down the SHIFT for Windows or Option for Mac while you click the RESTORE button in iTunes and select the iOS 4.1 firmware file you have just downloaded.

6. The restore will end with error 1015 and recovery loop on the iPhone, this can be resolved using the “Exit Recovery” button in TinyUmbrella.

7. start redsn0w 0.9.6rc18.

8. Browse for the iOS 4.1 firmware you just downloaded.

9. Select ‘Install Cydia’ and ‘Install iPad Baseband’. Warning: installing iPad baseband will break your GPS.

10. Follow on screen instructions to put your device into DFU mode to begin the jailbreak.

11. when the process is done, you will find that your iPhone is now jailbroken on iOS 4.1 with iPad baseband 6.15.00. To make sure you can always go back to iOS 4.1, launch Cydia and select ‘Make my life easier.’

If you’re happy with iOS 4.1 and would like to unlock it, skip to step 17 now.

Still up to the challenge? Let’s update it to iOS 5 and then unlock it with ultrasn0w 1.2.4. We’re more than half way there!

12. Download custom iOS 5 for 3GS from here.

13. Download the latest redsn0w from the Dev Team’s website or from here. start redsn0w, go to Extras > Pwned DFU. This allows your iPhone to accept custom firmware.

14. Reinstall iTunes 10.5.

15. Connect your iPhone to your computer and hold shift+restore (Windows) or option+restore (Mac) and select the custom iOS 5 IPSW you just downloaded.

16. Once the restore is done, your iPhone will now have iOS 5 with baseband 6.15.00.

Note: Once your iPhone has booted up you will see new setup screens. when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services.  Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”.  It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

17. Launch Cydia from Springboard (home menu).

18. Search for ultrasn0w on Packages in Cydia. if you cannot find it, add new sources by typing ultrasn0w repo:

repo666.ultrasn0w.com (with zero, not o).

19. Install Ultrasnow 1.2.4.

20. Reboot your iPhone. Please note that since the jailbreak is tethered it may not boot up properly (stuck on Apple logo). if this happens, start redsn0w 0.9.9 again, go to Extras > Just Boot. Follow on screen instructions.

21. Turn off 3G and insert your SIM card. it should pick up your mobile signal.

Not too difficult right? if you follow the exact instructions this will work 99%.

Good luck and leave your comments or questions below.

Did it work? Buy me a beer! Never required but always appreciated!

iPhone Envy: T-Mobile Customers Might Want AT&T Merger

The anticipation is over: We know what’s coming in the iPhone 4S and iOS 5, and what isn’t, at least for the next several months. one of the more noticeable things missing is support for the number four U.S. mobile carrier, T-Mobile. It’s clear why even this World Phone (it supports GSM and CDMA) won’t blush T-Mo Magenta: Apple didn’t include support for the carrier’s 1700 Mhz 3G/4G bands.

The good news is that Sprint customers will soon get some long-awaited iLove, but there are really only three realistic ways T-Mobile customers will get the iPhone.

1. Unlocked or Jailbroken Devices. T-Mobile customers have been able to use the iPhone on their network since its introduction in 2007. in fact, according to recent figures, 3% of all T-Mo customers do just that, but have needed to jailbreak the phone to do so. While a jailbreak for the iPhone 4S obviously doesn’t exist yet, it’s likely only a matter of time before a full OS and baseband jailbreak vulnerability is found, exploited, and released.

Recently, Apple introduced an unlocked iPhone 4 in the U.S. and around the world, letting customers use the phone on T-Mobile and other unsupported carriers without having to jailbreak the device. This release comes at an unsubsidized device cost of $679.99, and still without support for T-Mobile’s 1700 Mhz, 3G/4G frequencies.

Bottom Line: You can get a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone to work on T-Mobile today; but it’s expensive and only supports GSM EDGE 2.5G speeds. TUAW is reporting that Apple will also likely release an unlocked iPhone 4S. (Those that jailbreak their devices, while potentially saving money on the cost of the device, will need to make certain they are aware of the risks to jailbreaking before taking the plunge and possibly bricking their device.)

2. Wait for the iPhone 5. The next evolutionary step for the iPhone is support for LTE and/or WiMAX. since the iPhone 4S doesn’t support those technologies, that’s going to require a newer communications chipset. If the iPhone is ever going to natively support T-Mobile’s 1700 Mhz 3G/4G network, this is logically the time when that support will be built into the device.

The issue is nothing more than the frequency that T-Mo uses to support 3G/4G. no other carrier in the world uses the 1700 Mhz frequency band; and it is unknown if Apple will release a T-Mobile specific device that makes use of these frequencies, without also building in support for LTE and/or WiMAX at the same time. While Apple did release a Verizon specific iPhone 4, it was the carrier’s size that made that a reality. Apple waited until the release of the iPhone 4S to enable support for Sprint, even though they use the same communication technology as Verizon.

Bottom Line: Waiting sucks. However, with a probable, internal spec bump as well as an updated communications chipset, the iPhone 5 may be T-Mobile’s best chance to get native support for their 3G/4G network built into the world’s most popular smartphone.

3. Wait for the AT&T/T-Mobile Merger to be Approved. there are still a number of hurdles to get over–the Department of Justice, the FTC, Sprint’s objections, and other issues–but this is the fastest way for T-Mobile customers to get a fully functional, 3G/4G enabled iPhone now. AT&T wants T-Mo for its spectrum to help support its LTE rollout in the U.S. While this really begs the iPhone 5 and its logical LTE support, an approved merger will eliminate the need for baseband jailbreaking as well as instantly giving 3G/4G support to those one million T-Mobile customers currently using the iPhone at EDGE-only speeds today.

Bottom Line: Waiting still sucks. However, from an iPhone point of view, this is a best case scenario for T-Mobile customers, and will provide an instant service enhancement to more than 3% of their customer base.

As a T-Mobile customer living in Chicago, I have my own issues and worries about the merger, as AT&T’s network here is horrible. Coverage is spotty; and there are marked and noted tower transfer trouble spots throughout the Loop and rest of the city. Chicago was one of AT&T’s early 3G markets, and the network is currently showing its age.

However, many T-Mo customers want the iPhone and don’t want to pay full price or take the risks of jailbreaking a newly acquired iPhone 4S. So, like so many others, I’m waiting for my iLove, knowing that the easiest, most affordable way for me to get it, is for AT&T’s proposed merger with T-Mobile to be approved.
