Apple iPhone 4S (Sprint)

What do you do with your phone? If you’re like most Americans, you make some calls, take some photos, and send some texts. maybe you kill time with some games, check Facebook or Twitter, and look things up on the Web. If that’s you, then the iPhone 4S ($199-$399 with contract on Sprint) is your phone: it’s the best cameraphone in the U.S., the fastest Web-browsing phone and one that has finally licked the iPhone’s calling problems. that makes it our current Editors’ Choice on Sprint.

Physical Features and Call QualityThe phone comes in six models: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, in black or white. The 16GB model starts at $199 with contract ($649 without), and each additional storage option bumps the price up by $100.

The iPhone 4S looks almost exactly like an iPhone 4 ($99, 4.5 stars). The only way to tell them apart is in the fine print on the back. Sprint’s new phone is model A1349. It’s still a work of art, an improbable black (or white) glass slab with a metal band around it, cool and hard in the hand. other phone-makers imitate, but none of them have pared their phones down to this pure industrial solidity.

Of course, with the 4’s body come some of its flaws. The glass front and back are prone to cracking if dropped frequently; I’ve seen more cracked iPhones than any other variety of device. And while Apple considers the 3.5-inch Retina Display perfect (and it’s gorgeous), I personally find the virtual keyboard too small to easily type on when it’s in portrait layout.

Apple has killed the “death grip,” at least on the Sprint model. The phone switches between its top and bottom antennas depending on which one is receiving better signal, which means it’ll ignore whichever one you’re covering with your hands. I was able to get data speeds to drop by gripping the phone from both ends in a bizarre two-handed clench, but really, nobody uses a phone that way.

Call quality on Sprint’s network through the phone’s earpiece was excellent in my tests. The earpiece goes loud, there’s a touch of side tone, and I didn’t hear any distortion at high volumes. Transmissions through the mic were sadly rather tinny, but they were perfectly loud and the mic blocked background noise very well. The speakerphone is fine for indoor use, but not loud enough to use outdoors; transmissions through the speakerphone were very clear. RF reception was on par with the Motorola Photon ($199, 4.5 stars) and other top Sprint phones.

The iPhone 4S paired easily with an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and I found that by pressing the button on the headset, I could issue an unusually wide range of voice commands (See “Siri” on the next page.) The Bluetooth headset also worked for music.

Sprint’s iPhone is a world phone which roams internationally for insanely high rates you can find at sprint.com/international. There’s a SIM card in it which “existing customers in good standing” can request to be unlocked, so they can replace it with a less-expensive alternative overseas. Sprint’s phone will not work on Verizon’s or AT&T’s networks here, though.

I haven’t been able to test the battery yet, but battery life has never been the iPhone’s problem, at least in relation to other top-of-the-line smartphones.

Internet and Web BrowsingThe iPhone 4S is strictly a 3G phone. no 4G here. And I’m worried about the Sprint network’s ability to handle the strain. on launch day, all of my Sprint phones were crawling along at a pathetic 300-500kbps, with some data sessions taking several seconds to connect. once I was connected, I was connected—I didn’t drop calls or data sessions—but it was like I was waiting in line to get on the Internet. Sprint, for its part, says it didn’t see any problems in new York City that day. And we’ve seen slow speeds on Sprint before. Our annual Fastest Mobile Networks tests rated Sprint’s 3G network as reliable, but slower than AT&T’s or Verizon’s.

But pour some data into this baby, and wow, it’ll go. as long as Adobe Flash isn’t a key part of your life, the iPhone 4S is the fastest Web phone ever. It benchmarks faster than any Android Gingerbread phone and faster than any Windows Phone. side by side against the Motorola Photon on the same Wi-Fi network, the iPhone 4S consistently loaded pages a few seconds faster. The new version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, may even the score, but we haven’t seen or tested any ICS phones yet.

The great browsing speed comes in part from the new iOS 5, which we found made browsing much faster on all iPhones. It also comes in part from the new dual-core A5 processor, the same one used in the iPad 2. there aren’t a lot of third-party apps that take advantage of the dual-core processor and new GPU yet, but it’s key to some of the phone’s best experiences, such as the 1080p camera, AirPlay video streaming to Apple TV devices, and the browser.

And remember that on Sprint, unlike every other iPhone carrier, you get truly unlimited cellular data right now. That’s a good deal for heavy users, even if the data connection is slower than on other carriers.

There’s one exception to the unlimited data policy: tethering. While the phone supports tethering and hotspot mode, you need to pay $30 extra a month for them, and you only get 5GB of data to use on your laptop or other device.

How to Resell Your Old iPhone At the Best Price

With the new iPhone 3G S now available, some of you will most likely decide to upgrade their old iPhone 2G or 3G to get the “fastest iPhone yet”. Depending on your upgrade eligibility with AT&T, you might be able to get the best price on the new iPhone ($299 for the 32GB), or if you’re not eligible, the 32GB will cost you up to $699.

A good way to offset the price of the new iPhone 3G S is to sell your old iPhone. there are a few sites out there that “specialize” is buying out old iPhones but I recommend staying away from them. while they may be completely legit sites, they won’t give you as much as you could get if you sold your iPhone directly to a third party. The following is what I did to sell my last 2 iPhones and believe me, it worked very well…

Take Good Care of your iPhone

Needless to say that a clean, scratch-free iPhone will increase the resell value. I take good care of my stuff and even though I never put my iPhones in a case, both my old iPhones were in extremely good condition. This, plus the fact that I had the box and the original accessories really increased the resell value.

Unlock your iPhone

The first thing you want to do when reselling an iPhone is to unlock it. Unlocking your iPhone will allow you to appeal to a larger audience. there are many people on T-Mobile that are dying to get an iPhone. In my case, offering an unlocked iPhone was the key to finding buyers at the best price possible.

You can easily unlock the iPhone 2G, but if you updated to 3.0, you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone 3G until UltraSn0w comes out, sometimes soon. Personally, I hadn’t updated my iPhone 3G to 3.0 when it came out because I knew there wouldn’t be an unlock right away. I sold my iPhone 3G with the 2.2 firmware, unlocked with YellowSn0w.

eBay or Craigslist?

Now the most important part of the resell is to list your iPhone on the right sites. you basically have 2 options. first is eBay. What’s great with eBay is that you can reach foreign customers and some people in Europe are really willing to pay a good price for an iPhone. The downside of eBay is that you’re not sure how much money you will get, and you will have to deal with shipping and all that stuff. I don’t like eBay but it seems to be working well for many iPhone resellers.

My website of choice to resell my iPhones (and pretty much anything I have to sell) is CraigsList.org. I sold both my iPhones on Craigslist in a couple of days. What’s great about Craigslist is that you can reach local people, and it is free to list your item for sale.

To increase your chances of selling your iPhone for a good price on Craigslist, make sure you say your iPhone is unlocked in the title of the post. Also add a picture and list any accessories you will give with the iPhone, if any.

How It Worked out For me

When the iPhone 3G came out last year, I sold my iPhone 2G to a Spanish guy who was vacationing in the States. At the time, the iPhone was pretty expensive in Europe. I sold my unlocked 2G for $400, which allowed me to get the 3G and still make a profit of $100.

Last Friday, I sold my iPhone 3G to a woman who was just about to go visit her family in Israel. She needed an iPhone for her nephew. I had listed my 3G at $400 but I sold it to her for $350. I gave her $50 off because she also bought an iPod and an old digital camera from me. That was a pretty good deal for me… Total sale was $570, which is just what I paid for my new iPhone 3G S.

AT&T Offering Refurbished iPhone 3GS For Under $10 [AT&T Wants You To Get An iPhone, Offering A Used Older iPhone For Just $9 With New Contract & Data Plan]

We commonly cover and compare Android phones with iPhones here at TFTS, and one advantage that Android has over the iPhone is that Android phones are made by different manufacturers at different pricepoints. you have $50 Android phones, $100 Android phones, $300 Android phones, and so on and so forth, while usually there’s just one expensive iPhone. But, if you’re looking for a cheap iPhone, AT&T is offering a refurbished iPhone 3GS for just $9! Yep, less than $10.

The refurb iPhone 3GS is just an 8GB model, but that’s enough memory space to be able to manage your music and apps and things. It also requires you to get a new contract with data plan, which would you need anyway.  Seeing an Apple product sell for $9 is somewhat remarkable. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing sold in the Apple store that’s marked at less than $25. Sure, the iPhone 3GS is a generation old, and the new iPhone 4S/5 should be coming out in a matter of weeks, but hey, you can’t beat the price here.

As for the fact that it’s refurbished, I tend to shy away from those products but I know a lot of people buy refurbished and have good luck with the devices and said they were like new. Data plans (required for smartphones) from AT&T start at $15/month, so keep in mind that you’ll have to pay that if you plan to pick up one of these iPhone 3GS for super cheap.

Anybody planning to pick one of these refurb iPhones up from the AT&T website?

Why I Pre-ordered an iPhone 4S for Myself

  • Share
  • Email

I publicly stated that the iPhone 4S announcement earlier this week made me want a new Android phone instead of an iPhone 4S, but when it came time to hit the order button after two hours of trying, I clicked it – twice.

I already planned to order my wife an iPhone 4S to replace her 3GS with the horrible battery that shuts down after about 20 minutes of talk time and a couple of hours of standby. I just about gave up after an hour of trying to pre-order. When the process suddenly changed from slow as molasses to instantaneous, I finished pre-ordering hers and went ahead and ordered a second one – the 32GB black iPhone 4S.

Five factors pushed me over the edge.

  1. I need dependable GPS, something the Infuse 4G doesn’t have
  2. The Samsung Galaxy S II and Nexus Prime each disappointed me
  3. I want a great camera, which the iPhone 4S seems to have
  4. Siri looks awesome, potentially offsetting the weak Apple keyboard
  5. If I’m unhappy I’ll take it back

I already decided to replace my Infuse 4G. it has a problem with GPS that doesn’t seem to be fixable in my case. I’ve tried everything listed in various forums to no avail. Since my GPS technically works, Samsung and AT&T won’t replace it. But I can’t wait 10 minutes for a lock. my son doesn’t care about GPS and wants my phone, so I’ll use his upgrade eligibility and give him the Infuse.

The iPhone 4S will likely have the same dependable GPS as the iPhone 4 and 3GS, but I’m sure many other Android phones have great GPS and excellent built-in navigation from Google, something the iPhone doesn’t have. however, I’ve got both Navigon and Copilot Live for nav, so I know I’ll have depending GPS on the iPhone 4S that works even if I’m far from a good signal.

The two phones I really wanted were either the Samsung’s Galaxy S II or their forthcoming Nexus Prime. I first settled on the Samsung Galaxy S II and even dropped by the AT&T store Thursday morning to pick one up. I played with it and was disappointed. First, the screen was smaller (4 inches) than my Samsung Infuse 4G. But so is the iPhone 4S (3.5 inches).

Despite the dual-core processor, the Galaxy S II seemed sluggish. I tapped the icons and it often took about a second before they would respond. I’m not paying $200 and getting stuck in a two-year contract with a sluggish phone. maybe rooting it and putting a speedier ROM on the handset might have fixed that, but I had no way of testing that. the phone’s poor performance surprised me due to all the glowing reviews out there. I left without it.

It looked like the Nexus Prime would be my new phone and I’d have to wait a bit. Then I learned about two rumors, one before I pre-ordered and one after.

Samsung and Google were supposed to announce the Nexus Prime at CTIA. We just learned this morning that they would not be doing so after all. Don’t know why, but it was a surprising announcement that said they’d wait for another time and venue. This made me happy I pre-ordered the iPhone 4S.

Yesterday we heard a rumor that the Nexus Prime would possibly not come to AT&T right away. I’m an AT&T customer with four phones and an iPad on my account, so I’m not going to switch. I have a Verizon account for my Mi-Fi so that I can get 4G in nearby Charlotte and Greensboro. the early termination fees for my family would cost over a grand.

Because the two Android phones I most wanted left me wanting, I decided to go back to the iPhone. the iPhone 3GS and 4 treated me well for two years. It’s a dependable old friend that you can always rely on. A couple of new features really got me interested. Previously I said that I would not switch unless Apple included a larger screen, better built-in navigation, and customizable keyboards.

I will miss the larger screen on my Infuse 4G. my son will get that. I will miss the FlexT9 keyboard a lot! But I’ll adjust. I’m sure that after a month I won’t miss the screen real estate. I will miss the better keyboard, however one new feature might just make this a moot point.

If the Siri Assistant performs as well as the demos, then who needs a keyboard anymore? I’m guessing it will work about half as well. the FlexT9 keyboard I love on my Android phone works about half the time too. in Dolphin browser I can’t slide across the keys when typing web addresses. Many names or obscure words I use in my work as I study the Bible aren’t recognized either. If Siri can be used for the half the time that FlexT9 let me slide, it will be a push.

I love to take pictures. the camera on the Infuse works well, but the iPhone 4S camera looks like a big improvement. the fast lens and great retina display will likely result in a wonderful point-and-shoot. I’m expecting that I will be able to leave two gadgets behind – my Canon Powershot 1400IS and my Flip Ultra camera. I could have left them behind with the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Infuse 4G. But the video and still cameras on each phone always left me wanting. First, it takes a long time to get the camera on each phone going. Second, I the lack of physical shutter release button caused a lot of blur. I tap the screen and it moves the phone. Being able to use the volume button as a shutter release, I believe will alleviate this.

Finally, I realize that I could be totally wrong. I might really hate the iPhone compared to Android. If so, I’ll just take it back within my 30-day return window. I planned to do this if the Nexus Prime announcement made me drool anyway. now that Samsung won’t announce that phone, it might be harder to return it. But I can always do so, if I’m unhappy.

MediaPost Publications Hyundai Offers Drivers Pandora On the Go 10/04/2011

The battle between online audio platforms and broadcast radio is heating up, with more and more carmakers unveiling systems that integrate Pandora, the most popular online audio service, for in-car listening.

one of the most recent announcements came from Hyundai, which said its three-door 2012 Veloster, set to reach dealers later this month, will include Pandora integration as a free, standard feature for the Veloster.

The Veloster can integrate Pandora for in-car listening through a pre-installed iPhone hookup, which connects to the dashboard with Bluetooth. this basic setup, relying on the iPhone to facilitate the Pandora integration, resembles systems created by other carmakers to bridge the gap between online and in-car listening.

in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in October 2010, Pandora founder Tim Westergren said: “Our goal is to be in every new car that rolls off the manufacturing line.”

in January of this year, Pandora and Toyota announced that the car maker will integrate the country’s Pandora into Toyota’s “Entune” multimedia system, allowing users to access Pandora via any cell phone with a data plan, including smart and feature phones.

Pandora also has partnerships with Ford and Mercedes, along with radio manufacturers Alpine and Pioneer, whose aftermarket products allow drivers to access Pandora from car dashboards.

however, radio broadcasters aren’t ceding the digital in-car listening battlefield. Radio companies are pushing HD digital radio as a free, uncomplicated alternative to Pandora.

Automakers that have OEM deals to offer HD radio in new models include Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, MINI USA, Rolls-Royce, Scion, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

Both HD radio and Pandora also face a growing challenge from satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM, which continues to count on new car installations as the main engine of subscription growth.

Does it Make Sense to Buy an 8GB iPhone? – International Business Times

The iPhone 3GS has only a 3-megapixel camera, and its video camera doesn’t record in HD. The 3GS lacks the 3-axis gyroscope of the iPhone4 and 4S, but has an accelerometer. a gyroscope can sense how a device is being rotated around many axes, where an accelerometer has a fixed axis and can only measure speed of rotation.

The biggest concession the 3GS makes is it doesn’t have HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access). HSUPA is just an improvement on High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology. Simply put, the 3GS wireless data speeds are just not as fast as the iPhone4 and 4Ss. Phone calls should be fine, the 3GS just won’t download and upload data like pictures and e-mails as fast and it will cost a little more to send that data.

Though the iPhone 4 and 3GS aren’t as powerful as the 4S, they still share in one of the best upgrades announced during Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” press conference: the new mobile operation system, iOS 5. The biggest thing to come out of the iOS 5 is the new iCloud service, which gives users free 5GB of online media storage. The iOS 5 also comes with a new, less intrusive notification center, a new messenger app and a better camera interface.

To read more in depth about the new iOS5, click here.

But the iPhone 4 and 3GS won’t get one of the 4S’ coolest new iOS5 features, Siri. Siri is a voice assistant app that accepts more conversational commands and can perform a wide range of tasks on the iPhone. you can ask it to set your alarm clock or find a particular restaurant in the neighborhood. you can use Voice Control on the other two, you will just have to speak more like a robot, and it doesn’t have as much functionality. The iPhone 4S’ A5 chip is what gives it the power to run Siri.

So the final verdict is the iPhone 4 and 3GS are pretty capable devices, but if you just want the “wow” factor of the iPhone and want it just to make phone calls and play a few games, the 3GS is a great free option. However, users won’t be able to take full advantage of the iCloud service, since the data exchange will be slower and more costly.

If you think you’ll be doing a little more media downloading and want a few more bells and whistles, go with the iPhone 4. but if you want the best toy in town, get yourself a shiny new iPhone 4S, which comes out Oct. 14.

Also if you want an iPhone, but don’t want it on Sprint, Verizon or AT&T, you can unlock the iPhone 3GS, which means you pay the unreduced price of $375. An unlocked phone will work on any GSM network as long as it has a SIM card. it just might not transmit data as fast as on the official three wireless networks.
