First look: Motorola Droid Razr is razr-sharp

Computerworld – Motorola Mobility, once king of the cellphone business, is apparently tired of being treated as an also-ran. First impressions of the new Droid Razr smartphone, introduced Tuesday and available next month from Verizon in the U.S., are pretty sweet.

I got a little hands-on time with the new Razr. The first thing that grabs you, and the first thing that Moto execs talk about, is its physical profile. It’s thin: 7.1mm, or precisely half the thickness of an HTC ThunderBolt. It’s light, too, at 127 grams. by comparison, an iPhone 4S is 9.3mm thick and weighs 140 grams. The svelteness is all the more remarkable because the screen is the 4.3-in. diagonal that we’ve come to expect from most high-end Android phones. (The iPhone’s screen is 3.5 in.)

I always go back and forth about screen size. Although I like the ability to fully operate a phone with only one hand, the larger real estate of the bigger screen is not without its appeal. if you’re used to an iPhone, the Razr will feel like a big slab of glass; if you’re an Android customer, you’ll absolutely notice the thinness.

Three other particularly important things about the Droid Razr: it uses Verizon’s way-fast 4G LTE network, claims a talk time of 12.5 hours and does not have a replaceable battery. for any Android phone, let alone a 4G Android phone, a non-replaceable battery is placing a big bet on power management.

One way Motorola expects to save power is by using a Super AMOLED display, which is something that has previously been seen only on Samsung phones. These beautiful screens are thin, light and power-stingy — three things that were clearly design goals of the Razr.

Another way to save power is with an interesting app called Smart Actions, which can trim power usage depending on a user’s location and usage profile. for instance, the app can be programmed to turn off Wi-Fi when it senses a 4G data connection (or vice versa) or to turn off Bluetooth when a wired headphone is inserted.

Motorola, with good reason, makes a big deal out of the phone’s stainless steel chassis and Kevlar fiber back. The Razr’s got a top-shelf feel to it, harkening back to the build quality of the old-time MicroTACs and StarTACs, not to mention the original Razr flip phone, of which Motorola sold millions.

The Droid Razr runs Android 2.3.5 “Gingerbread,” not Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” — which was due to be released Tuesday night — as some industry watchers had speculated it might. Inside is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor from TI, with 1GB onboard RAM and a side slot for MicroSD. (It comes with a 16GB card.) There’s also an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera that can capture 1080p video; a front-facing camera for video chat; and an HDMI output port.

Lest anyone forget that Apple has iCloud, Motorola also introduced a “personal cloud” product called MotoCast, which allows the transfer of music, photos and documents between a base computer — Windows or Mac — and a Razr. it looked interesting and survived a live demo by Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha.

It’s a sign of the importance that Motorola places on the Droid Razr that one of the front-row guests on Tuesday was Eric Schmidt, the former CEO and current executive chairman of Google, which is in the process of buying Motorola Mobility. he wasn’t introduced from the stage, he didn’t speak, and there was no fuss made around him. But CEOs don’t show up at random product introductions. Plainly, the Razr is a source of high expectations, and there’s every sign that those expectations are not unreasonable.

Preorders will be taken starting October 27, with shipping “in November.” Pricing is $299 with a two-year contract.

Dan Rosenbaum, by day a search strategist and content maven, has been reviewing mobile technology since the 1990s. His MicroTAC and StarTAC phones are still in a box somewhere.

Want to sell your old iPhone? Here’s the deal

  • Apple unveils faster, more powerful iPhone
  • Analysis: iPhone 4S an evolution, not a revolution
  • Gadgets blog: Is new iPhone enough to beat Android?
  • Apple must ‘do right thing’ on price by Aussie customers: MP

The iPhone 4S hits stores in a little over a week and if you’re too lazy to sell your old handset on eBay, “re-commerce” sites can help you trade it in for instant cash.

iPhone 4S pre-orders begin this Friday, with the phones going on sale in Australia at 8am on October 14. the new smartphone is faster than its predecessor and has a better 8-megapixel camera and new software features such as the Siri personal assistant.

eBay is the obvious second-hand market for those looking to offload their old iPhone and other smartphone models ahead of the new launch. but there are several “re-commerce” sites that promise to make the trade-in process even more painless.

In Australia, Mazuma Mobile and ReGadget both specialise in buying second-hand technology products.

Aid Rawlins, managing director of Mazuma in Australia, said those selling iPhone 4 units could expect to receive between $200 to $400. Payment is processed within 48 hours.

“We’re not concerned about its cosmetic condition, it doesn’t need the box, doesn’t need a charger, doesn’t need headphones, doesn’t need any accessories whatsoever,” said Rawlins.

“We make it a very simple, straightforward process for people to sell their old phone.”

Rawlins said the phones Mazuma bought were refurbished, with all data erased, and then sold on to the developing world and also to insurance companies who need refurbished replacement phones.

“A mobile phone can last 12 years before it comes to its true end of life,” he said.

Rawlins said Mazuma had been operating in Britain for almost six years and had handed out over $160 million for used phones. In Australia it has operated for about a year and paid out around $5 million.

Owen McCrink, general manager of ReGadget, said he was expecting more iPhone 3G and 3GS than iPhone 4 trade-ins. He said he believed many iPhone 4 owners were hoping Apple would launch the iPhone 5 today and would hold off their upgrades until it arrives.

more below

McCrink said that 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 units would fetch customers about $340 and $400, respectively. iPhone 3GS 32GB models were selling for around $195-222 but the price could drop if there is a rush of trade-ins.

“Our price changes depending on what’s included – we value the accessories and boxes and that more so than the other competitors such as Mazuma,” said McCrink.

“We try to refurbish ourselves and re-sell ourselves. It’s a different model. We resell direct to consumer through markets such as eBay, Craigslist and also we have some partners in Chile and some other countries around the world where we sell our phones directly.”

Long-term Apple fanatic and editor of MacTheMag, Matthew Powell, said trade-in services were particularly attractive to those who wanted to ensure their old technology is kept in use for as long as possible and doesn’t end up in landfill.

“In my household we’ll be doing the shuffle – I get a 4S, my wife gets the iPhone 4 and probably my father inherits the iPhone 3GS. It’s one of those ‘circle of life’ things,” said Powell.

Telsyte analyst Foad Fadaghi said the trade-in sites were “opportunistic” around new product announcements and for the average consumer it was better to wait and see or go for the private sale approach.

Anthony Agius, founder of MacTalk.com.au, warned people to beware of being “low balled” on price.

“It’s like doing a trade-in for your car at a dealer vs. selling it privately. If you can’t be arsed selling it on eBay/forums/whatever, those sorts of sites are good,” he said.

Apple Wants To Make iPhone 4 Cheaper, Price Cut In India?

Now, before even we get started, let us be clear, no official announcements for India, but we have reasons to believe… Apple announced its Q4 quarter results yesterday and gave interesting numbers and talk during the call. while we will dig deeper into a lot of those figures and analyse the strategy, here is an important bit, Tim Cook commented on the 3GS / iPhone 4 pricing strategy while answering questions. The iPhone 4 has a 8GB avatar selling at $99 in US (with contract) and the iPhone 3GS has gone free.

In India, Apple is selling the iPhone 4 via Aircel and Airtel since a few months and pricing is close to Rs 35,000 to start with. The unlocked 8GB 3GS however dropped down to Rs 19000 approx in India before the 4S was announced and we do not expect any further price-cut there. however Cook’s comments suggests that the iPhone 4 would get cheaper in markets where it is not subsidized.

Cook mentioned during the last earnings call that  Apple wants to take the advantage of lower priced iPhones and while the same won’t be free or $99 (3GS & iPhone 4) in pre-paid / unsubsidized markets, it would be lower than the current levels. an iPhone 4 price cut in India along with a 8GB version can be a shot in the arm for iPhone’s market share.

We aren’t sure how the math really works, but the 8GB iPhone is $100 less on contract and if the same is introduced in India, we would expect the pricing to be below Rs 30,000. at the same time we also wonder if the iPhone 4S is coming to India anytime soon? As I speculated earlier, it is logical for the iPhone 4S to launch in India before year end.

iPhone 5 rumour roll-up for the week ending October 28

The iOSsphere hungers for news about iPhone 5. It can’t let go of LTE, and new images of what the next iPhone will look like again rear their Photoshopped pixels. Contemplating a quad-core mobile processor causes swooning.

And just in time for Halloween, authoritative word that the late Steve Jobs will not introduce the iPhone 5. He’ll introduce the iPad 3.

IN PICTURES: Coolest Mac-o’-lanterns from around the world

You read it here second.

“I don’t know about you, but the stretched out iPhone 5 is starting to look a fair bit like the Android superphones that are out there with their 4+ inch displays.” — Michael Kwan, Mobile Magazine, commenting on imagined “concept art” for the non-existent iPhone 5

iPhone 5 will have LTE you betcha!

At least, “according to industry sources in Taiwan,” as reported by DigiTimes, which has more of them than anyone else.

The published account is actually headlined “Competition for LTE-enabled smartphones to heat up in 2012,” but the story itself is about the U.S. LTE smartphone market. “Competition among handset vendors for a bigger share in the US LTE-enabled smartphone market is set to intensify in 2012 when Sprint Nextel starts kicking off its LTE services in the middle of the year.”

That’s a bit like saying, “Competition among Republican presidential candidates is expected to intensify in 2012 when primary elections start.”

The industry sources refer to Apple almost in passing. “Nokia, Apple, RIM and Sony Ericsson are expected to join the LTE club in 2012 …,”using the Passive Rumor Tense which always makes rumors sound more like facts.

So CNET rewrote the headline when it “reported” the DigiTimes story: “Apple expected to launch 4G LTE iPhone next year.”

The bulk of the CNET is a summary and linknest of previous stories dealing with LTE market projections, other LTE handset vendors, Apple’s rare comments on LTE technology and so on. the general iOSsphere assumption seems to be that Apple will miss the tidal wave of LTE adoption, or reveal itself as technologically inept, if it fails to introduce an LTE iPhone 5 in 2012. CNET repeats some ABI Research projections: “To keep up with the likely consumer demand, the number of 4G smartphones shipped annually is forecast to reach 245 million in 2016, compared with just 4.6 million last year …”

That sounds like a lot. but then Morgan Stanley is forecasting nearly 2.8 BILLION “3G+” users by the end of 2014. It’s likely that a somewhat more “mature” cellular market like the U.S. will have a higher penetration of 4G by 2015, but the bulk of usage will still be 3G-related. Apple can afford to wait on the 4G iPhone.

Christina Bonnington, writing for Wired’s Gadget Lab blog, slaps the LTE dreamers upside the head. “LTE support isn’t something that Apple can just instantaneously ‘flip on’ for everyone,” she points out. “A host of technologies — from network towers to hardware chipsets — must first converge, and if the short history of 4G deployment is any indicator, Apple’s 4G future could be bumpy.”

The iPhone 5 with LTE is a distant reality. “We’ll believe it when we see it,” Bonnington writes. “And then we’ll immediately begin testing the handset in various locations to see just who’s really served by LTE support.”

People with Photoshop already know what iPhone 5 will look like

We enter, once more, that strange land where virtuality imitates reality imitating virtuality imitating reality. Several rumor sites again are posting renderings, mockups, concept art or, more simply, made-up images of the next iPhone. then, they’re talking about them as if these were real.

Mobile Magazine has posted images by ADR Studios’ designer Antonio de Rosa, who “culled together the most current rumors and put them together in a clever package.”

What are those current rumors, you ask? they include an “aluminum or ‘liquid metal’ unibody type body, a capacitive home button in an oval-like shape, a larger 4.3-inch screen that goes nearly edge to edge, an upgraded Apple A6 dual-core processor, and improved versions of both iOS 5 and iCloud.”

We think Mobile Magazine’s Michael Kwan might be getting carried away since de Rosa’s concept art doesn’t actually show us the A6 or the “improved” OS and cloud service. but, that’s just a quibble.

But Kwan is also dubious. maybe this isn’t such a clever concept after all. “I don’t know about you, but the stretched out iPhone 5 is starting to look a fair bit like the Android superphones that are out there with their 4+ inch displays,” he writes. “The edge to edge display looks nice, but I’m not sure I’m a fan of that grey-ish curved back.”

Over at the iPhone 5 News Blog, they’re not so sure either. “I tend to agree with MobileMag’s general observation, particularly as it relates to the larger screen size on the iPhone 5,” writes Michael Nace.

He also references the metal unibody “construction” (if one can use that term for a Photoshop imagining) “thanks to groundbreaking ‘LiquidMetal’ technology, which many believe will also debut on the iPhone 5.”

That’s a nice touch: “many believe.” that could be a reference to “industry sources in Taiwan” or the legions of “graphics designers” furthering the conversation about what the next iPhone will look like.

“LiquidMetal” apparently refers to the alloys created by Liquidmetal Technologies: alloys that have, among other properties, more than twice the tensile strength of conventional titanium alloys. Yet Apple has created aluminum unibodies for MacBook Air and more recently the MacBook line itself without any liquidmetal.

Not to be outdone, GizmoCrunch has concept art and concept specs from another designer, Alexander Black.

“Hardware-wise, this iPhone 5 concept purportedly packs an A8 1.9GHz dual-core processor, 10-megapixel rear camera, 7-megapixel front camera, 4.5-inch Retina Display, a touchpad integrated at the back similar to the Sony PS Vita, 2100mAh battery and of course, iOS 5,” gushes Steve Taylor.

“We can’t even imagine just what a 1.9GHz dual-core iPhone 5 is capable of,” he writes, clearly on the verge of swooning over an imagined phone with made-up specs created by a graphics designer.

iPhone 5 will have a quad-core processor

To be honest, we missed this rumor from last week. Living up to its name, MacRumors carried a story based on a story in Korea Times that Apple will shift from to TSMC instead of Samsung for production of the next-generation, Apple-designed A6 and A7 chips for future iOS devices.

But then it gets confusing because the MacRumors story goes on to say that Apple in fact is sticking with Samsung for the A6, a quad-core processor “to be used in the next iPhone.” Citing an anonymous “executive from an Apple parts supplier based in Korea,” MacRumors/Korea Times said Samsung “has been increasing the output of the Apple-designed A6 chips in its manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas.”

Quad-core mobile chips are pretty rare at this point. Nvidia earlier this year demonstrated its “Kal-El” addition to its Tegra product line. and Qualcomm and Freescale also are both touting higher performing quad-core silicon, which can do things like support 3D graphics … on a screen smaller than a slice of bread.

Life doesn’t get better than that. Until we have six-core mobile processors.

Steve Jobs will not introduce the iPhone 5

Just in time for Halloween.

Given that he’s dead, this would seem like a no-brainer. but there are now rumors that Jobs recorded a product introduction to either the next iPhone or the next iPad or both.

Forthrightly, if ghoulishly, Beatweek debunks any expectation that Jobs will introduce iPhone 5 from beyond the grave. “If Steve were to make a posthumous product introduction (again, we’re not saying the idea sounds realistic, but rather merely addressing viability of the buzz we’re hearing), it would be at Apple’s next event — and that’ll be the iPad 3 event,” writes the assured Bill Palmer.

Of course, if the idea sounded realistic, no one would be rumoring it; or explaining why it’s not actually realistic after all.

Choosing The Best Leather iPhone 3G Accessories For Your iPhone

There are many different types of leather iPhone 3G accessories created by the manufacturer to be used in different ways for the iPhone. These accessories come in numerous different designs, colors, and styles so that anyone can find an accessory that will fit with what they want for their iPhone. There are several things that will need to be considered when choosing the best leather iPhone 3G accessories for your iPhone to ensure that you are getting the right accessory for your needs.

Leather iPhone 3G accessories can be found in a wide variety of attractive styles. The style of accessory that is chosen for the iPhone will have a great deal to do with how the owner would like the iPhone to look. If everything else about the iPhone follows a theme, then the best leather iPhone 3G accessories to be used with the iPhone will follow the theme as well. An accessory that does not match the current style used for the iPhone will look out of place and odd when viewed together with the other items. Even some types of iPhone car accessories will be available in a leather style that is attractive to you.

Leather iPhone 3G accessories can be found in a wide range of prices, with each type of accessory available in several different prices according to the style and the materials used. Some types of leather iPhone 3G accessories will cost more than standard accessories because of the additional steps needed in the manufacturing process.

Another place to obtain an iPhone 3G review is on websites dedicated to technology products. Choosing a price range to focus on before heading out to shop for the accessories will also reduce the amount of time that you will spend looking for accessories because you can limit your focus to items that are within that price range.

For a truly objective iPhone 3G review, you will need to find a website that offers consumer reviews on different types of technology products.many people trend towards a brighter or darker color scheme for most of the clothing items that they wear on a regular basis. it is best to choose darker accessory items for darker clothing schemes and purchase brighter items as accessories for brighter clothing schemes. Purchasing leather iPhone 3G accessories that are too bright or too dark for the person’s regular clothing color scheme will make the iPhone look bad and you will end up having to exchange the leather iPhone 3G accessories to something that is more attractive for the iPhone.
