Orion Announces Integration with iTimeKeep iPad and iPhone Apps, Providing Automatically Synchronized Time Entry from iPads and iPhones

ATLANTA & PITTSBURGH, Oct 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) –Orion Law Management Systems, Inc. ( orionlaw.com ), a leader in Financial and Practice Management software for law firms, announces a new integration with Bellefield Systems’ iTimeKeep iPad and iPhone Apps.

using iTimeKeep, Orion customers can now enter time directly from their iPad or iPhone via wireless connection and their entries automatically synchronize and register in Orion’s accounting system in real time. also, when the user adds new clients, matters, tasks and activity codes in Orion, iTimeKeep renders them visible on the iPad or iPhone immediately. Cloud-based iTimeKeep applies multiple levels of security to ensure that data is transferred safely from one system to the other.

Setup for the integration is straightforward. Orion clients simply download the free iTimeKeep App from the Apple Store and Orion sets up the integration on the database back-end.

William J. Dunaway, Shareholder at Clark, Partington, Hart, Larry, Bond & Stackhouse, recently installed the Orion/iTimeKeep integration at his firm. Dunaway remarks, “Entering time in Orion via iTimeKeep from my iPad is a huge time saver. Time capture is faster, easier and more accurate and I don’t need a remote login to Orion.”

Orion president, Paul Yelton, comments, “Today’s lawyers and legal staff are increasingly using iPads and iPhones when out of the office, due to their lightweight portability, versatility, convenience and user-friendly interfaces. we are proud to integrate Orion with iTimeKeep, which will give our customers who use iPads and iPhones a distinct advantage in capturing their time more quickly and accurately.”

according to John Kuntz, Principal and Co-Founder of Bellefield Systems, “Recent statistics show that lawyers ‘leak’ significant billable time by not capturing time entries immediately, and this can cost them and their firm thousands of dollars per attorney per year. iTimeKeep changes the game by enabling professionals to enter time instantly from their iPads and iPhones, and now they can send those entries directly to the Orion accounting database so the time can be billed promptly. Our mutual customers and the law firms they work for will benefit greatly from this connection.”

The Orion/iTimeKeep integration module can be purchased from Orion for $1495 plus a recurring $40 per user monthly fee for the required iTimeKeep subscription. Attorneys can fully recover this fee by simply capturing only 10 extra minutes of billable work that may have otherwise gone unrecorded and unbilled.

Special Operations Apps Integrates CamoScience™ for iPhone 4S — 96 Hours After Release

Press Release Source: Special Operations Apps on Monday October 17, 2011, 7:36 pm EDT

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — GEOINT 2011 Symposium, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center — Special Operations Apps (SOA) has announced the release of CamoScience HD™, the retooled application that now integrates the high-definition video of the Apple iPhone 4S for camouflage on demand, executed direct to garment and for next-generation adaptive camouflage, GEOINT Camouflage™.

The integration of CamoScience HD™ comes 96 hours after the first iPhone 4S devices were made available to the public.

Special Operations Apps — a company affiliated with, but independent of MW Research and Development, inc., both of which were founded by SOA president K. Dominic Cincotti — designs and fields applications specifically for warfighter mobile devices, touchscreens, laptops, and smartphones.

CamoScience HD™ was created as the result of a cluster of successive patent-pending technologies, including Photo-Real™, Photo-Stealth™, and simultaneous multi-spectral adaptive camouflage processes, introduced by Cincotti in 2007, 2009, and earlier this year. this camouflage was designed initially for unique Special Forces requirements. To develop CamoScience™, Cincotti and his team partnered with Dr. Craig Hunter, who, with his brother Todd, founded Hunter Research & Technology. the Hunter brothers are renowned as the minds behind the iPhone 4’s Theodolite App, the best-selling, award-winning navigation application.

“The SOA team delivers solutions from a unique perspective,” said Todd Hunter. “They have one foot in the SOF world and one foot in the Apps world. What is so unique about SOA is that they seamlessly integrate perspectives of both worlds. they really live their motto, ‘Warrior Legacy, Killer Apps.'”

“The SOA team is also fast and easy to work with,” Hunter said. “And did I say fast?”

SOA apps are integrating technologies as disparate as Pedestrian Dead Reckoning, Human Geography, and Crowd Sourcing into what Cincotti calls U2-DOP2 — Unit/User Defined Operational Pictures and Perspectives.

“This is, essentially, a hierarchy of veracity based on point-of-the-spear and ‘on point’ philosophies,” Cincotti said, “which means, for example, the aviator who sees the larger picture of a firefight doesn’t have data-veracity precedence over the Operator actually engaged in the firefight. Yet intel from each is important.”

“Through more robust geo-tagging and navigational tools, ‘eyes on’ has precedence that needs to be expressed in algorithms and developed into mobile Apps,” said David Mullins, team leader of SOA’s subject matter experts and a veteran Operator on four continents.

“This is what we preach and what we do and what we are developing — with U2-DOP2,” said Cathlena Spencer, SOA’s chief technology officer.

“Obviously there is an interest in turning COTS — commercially available off-the-shelf products into GOTS, government off-the-shelf products, for ease in training and dissemination,” Spencer said. “We seek to bridge that gap with technologies available in 18-month increments.”

“We customize, design, and retool with the Operator in mind,” said Mark Tocci, SOA’s vice president of business development, a patent-pending inventor and a former Ranger. “After all, as the saying goes: ‘Humans are more important than hardware.'”

CamoScience™ and CamoScience HD™ are great examples of making relevant Commercially available Off-the-Shelf  (COTS) technology customized for immediate military use, Cincotti said. “That’s why we’re working with Hunter Research & Technology and will continue to work with them,” he said. “They are truly ahead of their time.”

U2-DOP2 and Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) will create new systems for integrating and fusing useful data and feeding this mission-critical data directly to Operators, Cincotti said.

“We already know that in today’s networked battlescape, every soldier is a sensor,” he said, “but what has been created with all this data is a giant haystack. SOA is focused on finding that needle in the haystack — and that needle is going to look more like a Google-Maps push-pin perspective, like street-view.

“That needle now carries all attached metadata sources,” Cincotti said.

Popular Science magazine interviewed Cincotti last month for a forthcoming article. SOA’s CamoScience™ was featured on CNN and NBC news programs in July, in stories that focused on the next-generation camouflage capabilities it affords to military and hunting/outdoor markets and flexing the power of these lightweight smart devices with feature-rich app attributes, including geo-positioning, augmented reality overlays, and Area of Operation imagery.

Special Operations Apps launched in may, with the release of the CamoScience™ app by MW Research and Development, inc. CamoScience™ is a photo application native to the Apple iPad 2/iPhone 4, with its Android counterpart soon to be released.

Cincotti, who also founded MW R&D, has created more than a dozen interlocking patent-pending adaptive camouflage and immersive-training technologies. as MW R&D president, Cincotti is credited with creating Photographic Camouflage, camera-derived camo design that is an orders-of-magnitude advance over paint-and-pattern concealment. Using site-specific, digitally enhanced GEOINT imaging, Cincotti has developed a cluster of intellectual properties, including Photo-Stealth™, Photo-Real™, T.R.I.G.G.E.R.™, RO.U.T.E.S.™, MW Gripz™, Photo Veil™, 3D Hot Targets™, P.I.R.a.T.E.™, and P.I.R.a.T.E. 3D™.

At Special Operations Apps, Cathlena Spencer, who the led the commercial-application team for CamoScience™, serves as chief technology officer. Mark Tocci, a former Ranger and also a patent-pending inventor, is vice president of business development. David Mullins, a former Special Forces Operator with counter-terrorism and HALO experience, leads in-house subject matter experts. Cincotti, in addition to his duties at Special Operations Apps, continues as president of MW R&D.

Special Operations Apps (SOA) made the announcement of the new CamoScience HD™ and GEOINT Camouflage™ at the GEOINT 2011 Symposium in San Antonio, the preeminent event of the year for the defense, intelligence, and homeland security communities, with an estimated attendance of more than 4,000.

SOA’s Spencer, Mullins, and Tocci are on-site at the GEOINT event to schedule meetings with companies, military personnel, and key industry insiders. they are discussing SOA’s approach to the “15 Must-Have Apps for Operators” to be released in 2012 for the forthcoming SF App Store; scouting developers and companies with app features to integrate into SOA app solutions; and looking for “great-but overlooked” apps already in the market.

GEOINT Symposia are presented annually by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), the only organization dedicated to promoting the geospatial intelligence tradecraft and building a stronger GEOINT Community across industry, academia, government, professional organizations, and individual stakeholders.

Special Operations Apps is a privately held company based in Wilmington, N.C., strategically situated between Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune, and convenient to Virginia Beach, Va.

TechMan: Device chargers can tie cords, stomachs in knots

If you are a gadget freak like TechMan, you may end up, as he is, drowning in chargers. Phone chargers, tablet chargers, MP3 player chargers and on and on.

TechMan has a briefcase (actually more of a book bag, but briefcase sounds so much more important) full of chargers with their cords.

And the cords obey that universal rule, the “law of inevitable entanglement.” the law states that when any two or more cords or strings or ropes are placed together, they will ultimately become twisted into a tangled knot. Furthermore, the law states that the number of minutes required to untangle the mass is the square of the number of cords involved.

Since TechMan often has more than a half-dozen chargers, he spends a lot of time untangling them. Once he tried to organize by storing them in a Zip-Loc bag, but just ended with a tangled mass in a bag.

PG VIDEO

So what to do?

Let’s look at how chargers work.

Chargers have two parts, a cord and a variable-shaped protuberance at the end that plugs into the wall.

Often the cord detaches from the protuberance and it then has two ends.

One end is almost always a standard USB connector. it is the other end that is the problem. That end can have a micro-USB connector, a mini-USB connector or a proprietary connector of some sort that fits only one brand of device.

Increasingly, chargers are standardizing on a micro-USB connector. in fact, the International Telecommunications Union has been trying to come up with a universal charger that could be used on all devices. it would have a USB connector at one end and a micro-USB at the other.

Most big equipment makers have signed on.

But Apple, king of the proprietary chargers, has agreed to only the European implementation and may just ship an adaptor for its own connector.

If this works out, you could pretty much carry only one charger for everything (except maybe Apple products) and devices would not have to ship with their own chargers.

This would cut down mightily on the waste of energy and resources making all those chargers.

But don’t look for this to happen for a while. until then, there are ways to cut down that tangle of chargers.

First, since cords differ only in length and connectors, carry only one cord with each type of connector you need. in most cases, this would be a micro-USB connector for most recent cell phones, a mini-USB for older equipment and an Apple connector for Apple products.

But how about the bulgy end (which we’ll call the wall plug)?

It accepts AC power from the socket which gets reduced to smaller AC power through a transformer. Then a rectifier converts AC to DC power, which the device’s battery needs.

After that there is a filter circuit that cleans the power before it is used for charging the phone.

Most cell phones draw 5 watts from the charger. it is the draw of the device that is important. If a wall plug emits 5 watts, then it matches the device and that is the most efficient setup.

A wall plug can emit more than 5 watts and it won’t hurt the device. An iPad, for example, draws 10 watts and its charger emits 10 watts.

An iPhone draws 5 watts, and its charger emits 5 watts. So can you use the iPad charger for the iPhone? Yes, the phone still draws only 5 watts, and all is well.

You can also use the iPhone charger to charge an iPad, but it will charge only half as fast. So if you are going to carry only one charger for iPhone and iPad, carry the iPad charger.

For most Android phones you can use any charger that has a micro-USB and USB connector ends and a wall plug that puts out 5 watts or more.

One current solution to this is something called wireless charging or inductive charging.

You set your device on a base station plugged into the wall and it charges.

Powermat (powermat.com) and Duracell (duracell.com) are among manufacturers of these chargers. the base station, usually in the shape of a flat pad, can charge multiple devices at once.

The problem is cost. Not only do the kits cost from $50 to $100, but each device needs its own sleeve or clip to make contact, and those can cost $30 and up.

And of course, it you want to recharge on the road, you have to carry the base station with you.

Also remember that you can charge devices by plugging them into the USB port of a computer, but that is slow.

So it looks like for now, if TechMan wants to carry around a bagful of devices, he also has to carry around at least a small bagful of chargers.

Gear Reviews

After the relatively tepid critical reception afforded to the iPhone 4S, the biggest names in the smart phone have sensed blood. First up is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.

With all the stink in the media about Apple disappointing the world with their iPhone 4S, you might imagine that other companies are steering well clear of releasing incremental upgrades. however, the Apple backlash hasn’t stopped, with Sony Ericsson releasing the Xperia Arc S mere months after the launch of the original.

The S in the new name is rather more unambiguous than the Apple phone, with speed being the only real upgrade here, as the Arc S now sports a very fast 1.4GHz CPU – a fairly big leap over the 1GHz CPU of its older sibling.

What this means in real terms is an even more responsive phone than before and while it must be said that the original Xperia Arc was no slouch, the S feels better and handles high level tasks without showing the slightest strain. This is a small triumph for Sony Ericsson, who got off to a wobbly start in the smart phone market with a couple phones that had a variety of performance issues.

In almost every other regard, the Arc S is identical to its predecessor and we can tell you now that this is no bad thing.

As far as aesthetics go, the Arc S is Sony Ericsson at the top of their game and the obvious talking point is the massive 4.2-inch screen that dominates the handset. Powered by Sony’s Bravia Engine, the screen is vibrant and capable of stunning contrast and color saturation. the touchscreen is responsive, fast and the sheer size of the screen makes working with multiple apps and widgets easy.

The Arc S also scores points for its thin chassis (just 8.7mm thick), its weight (shy of 178 grams) and a generous amount of smartly placed buttons and ports for your interaction and connection pleasure.

A special mention has to go to the camera button because not only is this a dedicated button, it also has two stages; one for focus and another for the shutter and this gives you far more control over your photography than you might have experienced on a phone before.

The camera itself (the standard 8 megapixel) performs well in most lighting conditions and snaps range from good to excellent. Video records in 720p but was less impressive and the odd instance of blurry movement marred what should have been an impressive package.

Memory is not overly generous, with just 8MB of space offered out of the box, but like many of the latest Android phones, the Arc S can be augmented with support for microSD cards up to 32GB.

The battery life is also decent and despite having to power that lovely big screen, the juice was still flowing late into the evening before we had to connect a charger.Purely from a hardware perspective, the Arc S has much to recommend as it is fast, light and feels great in the hand, with the only real issue being its spotty video recording.Sony have also given the barebones Android interface the boot in favour of their own take on the OS. It still behaves exactly like you would expect but small changes are apparent and most of them take advantage of the massive screen size available on the Arc S.

Widgets are nice and big and as a result they are more usable that has traditionally been the case with smaller Android phones. Sony has limited the number of home screens to just five, something that might frustrate Android power users but it is easier to manage if you employ folders to sort your favorite apps.

Social networking selections

Sony’s social network aggregator makes a return on the Arc S, bringing all your Facebook, Twitter SMS and email updates together in a single scrollable timeline. its a nice touch and the tall screen makes the most of it but if you are a Twitter and Facebook junkie, then we don’t see this becoming your app of choice for either of those services, especially with the recent improvements to both of the official apps.

Facebook has also been baked into the contacts function of the phone and this is entirely more successful than Timescape. once your accounts are connected, your friends recent updates, photos and other information is displayed in your phonebook.

During the review for this phone we often browsed the phonebook for a contact only to be drawn in by what our mates are doing and while we loved it, we’re not sure how much good it would do our overall productivity in the long term.

Finally and because this is an Android handset, we couldn’t finish this review without commenting on how the Arc S handles Flash.

The short answer is, very well and the extra power served up by the new CPU had Flash web pages and video load swiftly and with very few instances of lag and absolutely no instances of page freezes. It’s all very impressive.

Verdict

The Arc S proves that Sony can play with the HTCs and the Samsungs of this world without feeling like they are playing catch up. the screen, the build quality and the superior implementation of Android means that if you are after a top range smartphone, the choice has become even harder.

Laptops, cellphones and the battle for battery life

When a laptop or cellphone dies in the middle of an unsaved term paper or during an important phone call, the frustration can make a student feel as useless as their empty battery. But students can do many things to their gadgets’ battery life — and it all begins with treating their laptops and cellphones with more care.

In order to treat electronics properly, users must have a better understanding of how they work. the composition of a standard rechargeable battery can be boiled down to a simple explanation.

According to Paul Braun, a professor in materials science and engineering, the chemical reaction that occurs in a battery while it charges is reversed when that battery is in use.

The difference between the energy charged and the energy used is called the voltage. Today’s standard rechargeable battery is called a lithium-ion battery. Students carry these around every day in their cellphones and laptops.

A battery is best when it is half charged. Leaving a computer plugged in for days will not cause the battery to overcharge or damage the computer because laptops today have circuitry built in to keep batteries from getting too much energy.

“If you want to extend the life of your battery, set your computer so it stops charging at 90 or 95 percent charge,” Braun said.

However, if a computer is left with zero charge for a long period of time, the battery can be permanently damaged.

In order to get the most uses out of a rechargeable battery, it should be kept in between uncharged and fully charged. This includes phone batteries.

It can be frustrating when a screen full of unused apps causes a phone to die, even after an entire night plugged into the wall. in order to keep phones and laptops from dying quickly, students must monitor their usage.

Steve McManama, assistant manager at Verizon Wireless, said that screen back lighting is a major battery drainer. Turning down the brightness is an easy way to conserve energy.

For cellphones, which have smaller batteries, McManama explained that it is necessary to charge phones as often as possible.

“It’s not a matter of conserving battery life, it’s a matter of having charging options available to you all the time.”

Portable chargers are now available, which makes phone charging a simple and easy task.

The more high-tech a phone is, the faster the battery power drains. An older model cell phone can last for days without having to be plugged into the wall, while an iPhone might not last through the afternoon.

Students can conserve energy on their smartphones by using a “task manager” to constantly close unused apps that drain power. Another tip for smartphone owners is to change how often a phone syncs to an email account.

Though students’ most-used appliances may use rechargeable batteries, many small household items require lead acid batteries, which are limited to one-time use. These can be found at the store in various forms, like AA or AAA.

Research associate professor Deb Errede suggested that users put batteries in the refrigerator to extend their lifespan. This slows the internal chemical reaction.

While there are many small things students can do to extend the lives of their batteries, further research and development is the key to longer-lasting batteries.

“There’s a lot of work going on worldwide on making batteries that hold more energy,” Braun said.

This means that future cellphone and computer batteries could last much longer.

“There are a number of people who are looking at things that would double or triple capacity,” he said.

According to Braun, these developments may be seen in a few years — which would mean a lot less frustration and a much longer-lasting battery.

By PHIL BAKER , Daily Transcript Technology Correspondent Monday, October 17, 2011 Advertisement

This past week, the wireless trade organization, CTIA, held its semiannual trade show in San Diego. The show is a shadow of what it once was, mostly because the annual Consumer Electronics show has increased its focus on mobile. nevertheless, the show provided a venue for a number of new product introductions.

This comes the week after the simultaneous introduction of Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4S that’s now carried by AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. (I’ll have a review in a few weeks.) The phone officially went on sale Friday, with reports of lines at AT&T stores forming Thursday night. More than 50 people were in line Friday morning when the San Diego Mission Valley store opened at 8 a.m.

At the show, AT&T introduced five new Android smartphones: the Motorola Atrix 2, the Samsung DoubleTime and Captivate glide, and the AT&T Avail and the Pantech Pocket, bringing AT&T’s total count of new Android devices this year to 19. Combine this with those from the other carriers, and there are about 50 new Androids since January. I suspect all of that clutter makes more people pick an iPhone, because even reviewers have trouble figuring out which Android phone to recommend.

Sprint announced the expansion of its Sprint ID service, which allows customers to personalize their Sprint Android phones by downloading ID packs that tailor their phones to one of about four dozen areas of interest, such as sports, entertainment, fitness, music and so forth. when you make a selection, you get apps, widgets, ringtones and wallpapers that match your interest. ID packs allow users to easily switch between English or Spanish and can be specifically tailored to the user’s line of work. Sprint customers can download up to five ID packs on their device. this seems like a great way to get up to speed quickly with the enormous selection of apps available (sprint.com).

A roundup of some of the other products introduced include a software phone called Line2 from the cleverly named Toktumi of San Francisco that lets you make calls from the iPad. It adds a phone line to place and receive calls and to send and receive text messages over the device’s Wi-Fi or 3G data connections. you can place calls using a wired headset, Bluetooth headset or over the iPad’s speakerphone. Its Wi-Fi capabilities also allow international travelers to place and receive calls while overseas without incurring any additional charges. The company positions itself as Skype for businesses. Line2 offers a free seven-day trial; service costs $10/month for the basic plan with unlimited U.S./Canada calling and texting and $99.50 for a one-year pre-paid plan (line2.com).

I’m open to trying it because I lost my $25 of credits I purchased from Skype last year. The company told me someone used my Skype ID and password to make dozens of calls between two African nations. The company took no responsibility and told me to change my password and then buy more credits. No, thanks.

Motorola introduced its new Lapdock 100, which turns a number of its phones, including the Atrix 2, Photon 4G and Droid Bionic, into a lightweight 10-inch laptop with a full-size keyboard and five-hour battery that can also be used to charge the phone. It comes loaded with a Firefox browser, Google Docs and Quickoffice. Might this turn into a Google Chrome notebook someday?

Plantronics announced a new Voyager PRO HD that contains sensors that are used to detect when you are wearing it. It’s essentially the same product I reviewed last week, but without the USB dongle. It comes in all black and costs $100. Based on last week’s tests, it ranks, along with the Jabra Supreme, as the best available headsets for talk quality, battery life and comfort (plantronics.com).

X1 Technologies announced an advanced version of its X1 Mobile Search for iPhones and iPads, which lets you remotely search your PC or Mac for any document or file. X1 Mobile Search is available free from the Apple App Store. It’s compatible with both Mac’s Spotlight and Windows search. Snaptracs, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, announced its Tagg pet tracking system that uses GPS and Verizon’s cellular network to monitor your pet’s location. Owners are notified if their pet wanders off beyond a defined boundary and then sends you an alert. you then can check online to locate your pet. The product consists of a battery-powered device that clips onto the pet’s collar and a charging dock. Tagg is designed for dogs and cats weighing more than 10 pounds, and costs $200 for the device, which includes the first year of service. Subsequent years are $60 per year (pettracker.com).

Cadillac demoed CUE, its in-car technology system for managing information and entertainment data, essentially its version of Ford’s Sync. CUE, which stands for "Cadillac User Experience," will debut in the 2012 XTS and ATS sedans, and the SRX crossover. It’s able to pair entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players. It utilizes voice commands and relies on fewer buttons and larger icons than the Sync and gets online using your smartphone. CUE relies on an 8-inch LCD touch screen in the center of the instrument panel; it has multi-touch capabilities such as zooming and scrolling, as on an iPad.

Sony launches a Personal 3D Viewer

I previewed Sony’s new HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer, a head-mounted display that lets you view both 2-D and 3-D video. Wearable displays to watch movies have been around for years but have been mediocre at best. not so with this device; its brilliant and sharp image quality is like no other. With two full HD resolution OLED displays only 0.7-inch in size, one in front of each eye, I watched a "Harry Potter" movie in 3-D and tried a race-car-driving game. It was a totally immersive experience.

It’s designed for use at home, not for traveling, as it needs to be plugged into a 110-volt connection and into a computer or other device with an HDMI connection and the source content. It’s available now to try at Sony Entertainment stores, including the one in San Diego’s Fashion Valley ($800, sony.com).
