Finally! The iPhone is Available to Buy Outright and Unlocked

Locked Down

One of the limitations of the first releases of the iPhone has been that it has been only available locked to a mobile network provider. In Australia we weren’t expecting that to change any time soon – it just seemed to be the way Apple was selling and distributing their product. and because the iPhone has been so popular, I didn’t figure anything was going to change soon.

But with the release of the iPhone 3GS in June 2009 things have changed. The Australian market has always been different for the iPhone distribution strategy. Many countries still have only one telecoms network providing the iPhone under an exclusive agreement whereas in Australia the iPhone 3G has been sold by Optus, Vodafone, Virgin and Telstra.

Outright and Unlocked

And now we have the iPhone 3GS being sold outright and unlocked by Apple in their shops and through the online Apple store. and it’s cheaper than what the mobile phone companies are selling it for. The 16GB iPhone 3GS is $879 and comes in black or white and the 32GB iPhone 3GS is $1,040 and comes in black or white. Those prices are in Australian dollars.

3 Mobile Joins the Party

The other great piece of news to coincide with the release of the latest iPhone is that 3 Mobile will also be supplying it. 3 Mobile are known for their great value plans and generous data allowances, so their plans will be popular. so there are lots of options to get an iPhone rather than just go on a 2 year contract with Optus or Telstra. if you choose to buy it outright from Apple you won’t have any of the restrictions of getting it unlocked to be able to change networks. Finally!
