Best Olympics apps for Android, iOS

Published on Jul 23, 2012

The summer Olympics are right around the corner and I know that I’ll be anxiously watching to see who gets gold. I’m not just going to be watching on my television, though, as this will be one of the most tech-savvy Olympics ever. Let’s take a look at some Android and iPhone apps that will help you enjoy the sporting spectacle.

NBC Olympics

This is the official Olympics app from NBC and downloading this means you’ll be able to stream more than 3,500 hours worth of live coverage to your iPhone, iPad or Android-powered tablet. If you want instant access to the Olympics on nearly any mobile device you own, this is the right app for you.

The one caveat is that you need to be a paid cable or satellite subscriber in order to get full access to the streaming sports, so cord cutters are still a bit out of luck. The app also includes biographical information about the athletes and more.

BBC Olympics

The 2012 Summer Olympics are taking place in London, so it makes sense that the BBC would provide a great app covering it. The BBC Olympics app will also provide live, streaming coverage, but that feature will only be available for those in the United Kingdom.

Even if you don’t live there, it’s a nice app to get all the latest news on the Olympics. along with the scores and facts, you can also use this app to get some nice features about the athletes.

Reuters Olympics London 2012

We’ve talked about great video apps, but what about those iconic photos that come out of the Olympic games? Check out the Reuters Olympics London 2012 app for iOS to see some of the greatest photographs from the events.

This app gives you access to nearly real-time photos from the Olympics and you can also get news and results. you have the ability to drill down by country or event and the app even includes integration with Apple TV so you can throw those photos on your big-screen TV.

Team USA

If you want to support Team USA, feel free to download the 2012 Team USA Road to London Olympics app, which is put out by the U.S. Olympic Committee. This app is meant to connect you with the athletes on Team USA, and this includes being able to connect with their Facebook and Twitter pages. There’s also a “cheer” button that will send a personal message to those athletes and you can purchase official Team USA gear or make a donation with the app.

Unfortunately, the reviews for the app aren’t stellar, as I’ve noticed some of the load times can be far too lengthy. Let’s hope we see a few updates before the games start.

Twitter

This is going to be the most digital Olympics ever and part of the fun will be following along with millions of others on Twitter. While there are a ton of third-party apps to access Twitter, I recommend the official app because it’s the most accessible, and we’re expecting Twitter to soon make an official partnership with the Olympics, which could lead to some original content.

With the Twitter app, you can follow athletes, your friends and keen sports personalities for up-to-the-minute coverage. I also recommend playing with the Explore tab to see what topics are trending, what hashtags are popular and who may be tweeting near you.

Enjoy the games with these apps and be sure to let us know what your favorite Olympics app is on our Facebook page or via Twitter.
